I asked, "What is troubling you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "I just witnessed the killing of Al-Hussein moments ago."
It is narrated that Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them) entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) while he was receiving revelation. The revelation descended upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) while he was bowing over his back. Gabriel said, "Do you love him?" He replied, "Why wouldn't I love my son?" Gabriel said, "Your community will kill him after you." Gabriel then extended his hand, revealing a white soil, and said, "In this soil, your son will be killed. This place, O Muhammad, is called Karbala."
In the accounts of Salim ibn al-Ja'd, it is said that it was Michael, while in the Musnad of Abu Ya'la, it is mentioned that it was the Angel of Rain.
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: While I was resting in my house, I heard a loud, high cry coming from the house of Umm Salama, saying: "O daughters of Abdul-Muttalib, assist me and weep with me, for your leader has been killed." It was asked: "How do you know this?" She replied: "I just saw the Messenger of Allah in a dream, disheveled and distraught. I asked him about it and he said: 'My son Husayn and his family have been killed, and I have buried them.'"
She continued: "I then looked, and I saw the soil of Husayn, which Gabriel had brought from Karbala, and he had told me: 'When it turns to blood, your son has been killed.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) gave it to me, saying: 'Keep it in a glass container, and when it turns to blood, Husayn has been killed.' I have just seen the container, and it has turned into overflowing, fresh blood."
It was narrated from Al-Sadiq Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) that he said: One morning Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) was found crying. She was asked, "Why are you crying?" She replied, "My son Hussein was killed last night. It is because I had not seen the Messenger of Allah since he passed away, except last night. I saw him pale and saddened." I asked, "Why do I see you, O Messenger of Allah, pale and saddened?" He said, "I have been digging graves for Hussein all night."

and his companions, peace be upon him and them.
Ibn Abbas said: While I was lying in my house, I heard a loud and great cry from the house of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him). I got up and went, guided by someone, to her house as the people of Medina, both men and women, were heading there as well. When I reached her, I said, "O Mother of the Believers! Why are you crying out and lamenting?" She did not answer me and turned to the Hashemite women, saying, "O daughters of Abdul Muttalib, help me and weep with me, for by God, they have killed your master and the master of the youth of Paradise. By God, they have killed the grandson of the Messenger of God, his sweet fragrance, Hussein."
I asked, "O Mother of the Believers, how did you know this?" She replied, "I just saw the Messenger of God in a dream, disheveled and alarmed. I asked him why he was in such a state, and he said, 'My son Hussein and his family were killed today. I just buried them and have just finished.' "
She said: "I stood up and went into the house, barely able to comprehend. I looked and saw the soil from Karbala that Gabriel had brought, and he said: 'When this soil turns to blood, your son has been killed.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) had given it to me, saying: 'Keep this soil in a bottle—or he said: in a jar—and when it turns into flowing blood, know that Hussein has been killed.' I now saw the bottle, and it had indeed turned into flowing blood."
He said: So Umm Salama took some of that blood and smeared it on her face, and she made that day a day of mourning and lamentation for Hussein (peace be upon him). Then the riders came with the news that he had been killed on that day.
Amr ibn Thabit said: My father said: I entered the house of Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali and asked him about this hadith, mentioning to him the narration of Sa'id ibn Jubayr about this hadith from Abdullah ibn Abbas. Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) said: Umar ibn Abi Salama narrated it to me from his mother, Umm Salama.
Ibn Abbas, in a narration by Saeed bin Jubair from him, said: "When the following night came..."

I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in my dream, disheveled and dusty. I mentioned this to him and asked about his condition. He replied, "Do you not know that we have just finished burying Al-Husayn and his companions?!"
Amr ibn Abi al-Muqdam said: Sudair narrated to me, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), that Gabriel came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) with the soil upon which Hussain (peace be upon him) would be killed. Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) said: It is with us.
The learned scholar Al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, mentioned: from some books of virtues, narrated by Ahmad bin Ja'far Al-Qatif, with the chain of narration from Ammar, that Ibn Abbas saw the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) in his dream one day at midday. The Prophet appeared disheveled and covered in dust, holding a vial containing blood. Ibn Abbas asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is this blood?" The Prophet replied, "This is the blood of Husayn; I have been collecting it since today." When they counted that day, they found it to be the day Husayn was killed.
Zur ibn Hubaysh narrated from Salma, who said: I entered upon Umm Salama while she was crying, so I asked her, "What makes you cry?" She said, "I saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in a dream, and there was dust on his head and beard. I said, 'What is the matter with you, O Messenger of God, that you are covered in dust?' He replied, 'I have just witnessed the killing of Hussein.'"
Salma the Medina woman narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) gave Umm Salama a vial containing soil from Karbala, saying to her, "When this turns into fresh blood, that means Al-Hussein has been killed." Salma said: A loud lamentation came from Umm Salama’s room, and I was the first to go to her. I said, "What has happened to you, Mother of the Believers?" She replied, "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) in a dream, his head covered in dust. I asked him, 'What is the matter?' He said, 'People have attacked my son and killed him. I witnessed his murder just now.'"

My skin prickled, and I jumped towards the bottle and found it boiling with blood. Salma said: I saw it lying between her hands.
Umm Salama said: One day, the Messenger of Allah was sitting while Al-Hussein was seated in his lap, when suddenly his eyes welled up with tears. I said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, what makes you cry? May I be sacrificed for you." He said: "Gabriel came to me and informed me about my son Al-Hussein and that a group from my nation will kill him. May my intercession not reach them from Allah."
Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) left our house one night and was absent for a long time. Then he returned to us, disheveled and dusty, with his hand closed. I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah! Why do I see you disheveled and dusty?" He said, "I was carried in the night to a place in Iraq called Karbala, and I was shown the scene of the martyrdom of my son Hussain and a group from my offspring and family. I kept gathering their blood, and here it is in my hand." Then he extended it to me and said, "Take this and keep it safe." I took it and found it resembling red soil, so I put it in a vial, secured its seal, and kept it safe.
When Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) departed from Mecca heading towards Iraq, each day and night I would take out that vial, smell it, look at it, and then weep for his plight. On the tenth day of Muharram, which is the day he was martyred (peace be upon him), I took it out in the morning and it was as it had always been. Later, when I returned to it in the evening, I found it had turned into fresh blood. I cried out in my house and wept, suppressing my grief for fear that the enemies of the Prophet's family in Medina would hear and hasten to express their glee. I continued to remember the time and the day until the bearer of bad news arrived and confirmed what I had seen.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "Indeed, my Ummah will kill him — referring to Hussein — after you." Then he said, "Should I show you some of his soil?" She said: So he brought some pebbles, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) placed in a small bottle. When it was the night of Hussein's martyrdom (peace be upon him), Umm Salama said, "I heard a voice saying:

Gabriel descended with a group of angels to greet Muhammad. As he descended, he passed by an island where there was an angel named Fetaras, whom God had sent on a mission but he was delayed, so his wing was broken and he was cast onto that island. He worshipped God for seven hundred years. Fetaras then asked Gabriel, "Where are you going?" Gabriel replied, "To Muhammad." Fetaras said, "Take me with you to Muhammad, perhaps he will pray for me."

When Gabriel entered and informed Muhammad about Fitrus, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: "Tell him to touch this newborn." Fitrus touched the cradle of Hussain (peace be upon him), and Allah restored his wings to him. He then ascended with Gabriel to the heavens, and it was said that he called Hussein by this name.

Ibrahim bin Shuayb narrated: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: When Hussein, son of Ali, was born, Allah, the Almighty, commanded Gabriel to descend with a thousand angels to congratulate the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) on behalf of Allah, the Almighty, and Gabriel. Gabriel descended and passed by an island in the sea where there was an angel named Fatrus. He was one of the carriers sent by Allah, the Almighty, but delayed in fulfilling his duty, resulting in his wing being broken and cast onto that island. He worshipped Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, there for seven hundred years until Hussein, son of Ali (peace be upon them), was born.
The angel Fatrus then said to Gabriel: "O Gabriel! Where are you heading?" Gabriel replied: "Allah, the Almighty, has bestowed a blessing upon Muhammad, and I have been sent to congratulate him on behalf of Allah and myself." Fatrus then said: "O Gabriel! Carry me with you so that perhaps Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) may pray for me." So Gabriel carried him.

He said: When Gabriel entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), he conveyed congratulations from Allah, the Almighty, and himself, and informed him about Fitrus. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: Tell him to rub against this newborn and return to your place. So, Fitrus rubbed himself with Hussain, son of Ali (peace be upon them), and was elevated. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, your community will kill him, but as compensation for him, I will ensure that no visitor visits him without conveying their message, no one greets him without conveying their greeting, and no one prays upon him without conveying their prayer. Then he ascended.

And he returned, wrapped in the mantle of joy,
Saying, "Release me"—fulfilling the vow,
And truly, the grandson was kind to me.

Ibn Abbas said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) say: Indeed, for Allah, the Exalted, there is an angel named Darda'il, who had sixteen thousand wings. The space between each wing and the next is air, and this air is as vast as the distance between the sky and the earth. One day, he contemplated within himself: Is there anything above our Lord, the Glorified and Exalted? Allah, the Exalted, knew what he had pondered, and thus granted him an equal number of additional wings, making it thirty-two thousand wings. Then Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, revealed to him: "Fly," and so he flew for a duration of five hundred years. However, he did not find the end of a single column of the Throne. When Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, realized his exhaustion, He revealed to him: "O angel, return to your place, for I am the Greatest above all that is great, and there is nothing above Me, nor am I confined to a location." Allah then took away his wings and his position from the ranks of the angels.

On the night of Friday, Allah revealed to Malik, the keeper of the fire, "Extinguish the fire for the sake of the honored one born to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)." He also revealed to Ridwan, the keeper of the gardens, "Adorn and perfume the heavens for the sake of the honored one born to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in this world." Additionally, He instructed the houris, "Adorn yourselves and visit for the sake of the honored one born to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in this world."
And Allah revealed to the angels: "Stand in rows praising, glorifying, magnifying, and exalting God, in honor of a newborn born to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in the abode of the world." Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, also revealed to Gabriel (peace be upon him): "Descend to my prophet, Muhammad, with a thousand troops, each troop consisting of a thousand thousand angels, riding on white horses, saddled and bridled, with pavilions of pearls and rubies, along with angels called the spiritual ones, holding lanterns of light. Congratulate Muhammad on his newborn, and inform him, O Gabriel, that I have named him Hussain. Console him and say: O Muhammad! The wicked of your nation will kill him with the worst of mounts. Woe to the killer, woe to the driver, and woe to the leader. I am innocent of the killer of Hussain, and he is innocent of me, for on the Day of Resurrection, no one will come without the killer of Hussain being more grievous in crime than him. The killer of Hussain will enter hell on the Day of Resurrection with those who claim there is another god with Allah, and the fire will long for the killer of Hussain more than those who obeyed Allah will long for paradise."
He said: While Gabriel was descending from the heavens to the earth, he passed by Dirda'il who asked him, "O Gabriel! What is this night in the heavens? Has the Day of Judgment been established for the people of the world?" Gabriel replied, "No, but a child has been born to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in the world, and Allah Almighty has sent me to him to congratulate him on his newborn." The angel then said to him, "O Gabriel! By the One who created you and me, when you descend to Muhammad, convey my peace to him and tell him: By the right of this newborn upon you, I ask you to beseech your Lord that He be pleased with me, and restore my wings and my position among the ranks of the angels."
The Angel Gabriel descended upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), congratulating him as God Almighty had commanded and offering his condolences. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) asked, "Will my community kill him?" Gabriel replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) then said, "These are not my people; I disassociate myself from them."
(534)
And I am innocent of them, Gabriel said: And I am innocent of them, O Muhammad.
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) entered upon Fatimah and congratulated her and consoled her. Fatimah (peace be upon her) wept and said, "I wish I could see the one who killed Hussein in the fire." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said, "I am a witness to that, O Fatimah, but he will not be killed until there is from him an Imam, and from him will come the guiding Imams after him."
Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "The Imams after me are: the guiding Ali, the rightly guided Hasan, the supporter Hussain, the victorious Ali ibn al-Hussain, the intercessor Muhammad ibn Ali, the benefactor Jafar ibn Muhammad, the trustworthy Musa ibn Jafar, the content Ali ibn Musa, the doer Muhammad ibn Ali, the reliable Ali ibn Muhammad, the knowledgeable Hasan ibn Ali, and Jesus son of Mary will pray behind him." At this, Fatima was comforted and stopped weeping.
Then Gabriel informed the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) of the angel's plight and what had befallen him. Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) took Hussein while he was wrapped in woolen cloth, lifted him toward the sky, and said: "O Allah, by the right of this newborn upon You, not by Your right upon him, and by the right of his grandfather Muhammad, and Ibrahim, and Isma'il, and Ishaq, and Ya'qub, if Hussein the son of Ali, son of Fatimah holds any status before You, then please appease him with Radail, and restore upon him his wings and his position among the ranks of the angels." Allah answered his prayer, forgave the angel, and the angel is known in Paradise only by the title: the ally of Hussein, son of Ali, the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and son of Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family).
It is narrated from Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: There was an angel from the close ones named Salasa'il whom God had sent on a mission, but he delayed, so God stripped him of his feathers, weakened his wings, and made him inhabit an island among the islands of the sea until the night when Hussein (peace be upon him) was born. On that night, the angels descended and sought permission from God to congratulate the grandfather of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and Fatimah (peace be upon her). God permitted them, so they descended in groups from the Throne, and from one heaven to another, passing by Salasa'il who was on the island.

When they looked at him, they stopped, and he said to them, "O angels of my Lord! Where are you headed and why have you descended?" The angels replied, "O Salsail! Tonight a noble child has been born, the most honored to be born into this world after his grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), his father Ali, his mother Fatimah, and his brother Hasan. He is Husayn (peace be upon him). We have sought God's permission to congratulate His beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) on the birth of his grandson, and He has granted us permission."
Salsail then said, "O angels of God, I beseech you by God, our Lord, and your Lord, and by His beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and by this newborn whom God has blessed, to take me with you to the beloved of God. I ask you, and him, to ask God, by the right of this newborn, whom He has granted them, to forgive me for my mistake, to heal my broken wing, and to restore me to my position among the nearest angels."
They carried him and brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). They congratulated him on the birth of his son, Hussein (peace be upon him), and narrated to him the story of the angel. They asked him to beseech Allah and implore Him, by the right of Hussein (peace be upon him), to forgive the angel's sin, mend his broken wing, and restore him to his position among the nearest angels.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) went to Fatimah (peace be upon her) and said to her, "Give me my son Hussein." She handed him over tightly wrapped, and he was playfully interacting with the grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). He then took him out to the angels, carrying him on the palm of his hand. The angels praised and glorified Allah, giving thanks and extolling His greatness. The Prophet turned towards the sky and prayed, "O Allah, I ask You, by the right of my son Hussein, to forgive Salsail for his sin, to mend his broken wing, and to return him to his high rank among the nearest angels."
Allah then accepted this from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), forgave Salsail for his sin, mended his broken wing, and returned him to his high rank among the nearest angels.
It is narrated that one day Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and found Al-Zahra (peace be upon her) asleep, with Al-Hussain in his cradle crying. He began to soothe and comfort him until she woke up and heard the sound of someone comforting him.

(536)
She turned around and didn't see anyone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed her that it was Gabriel (peace be upon him).
For the late Sheikh Abdul Moneim Al-Fartousi, may mercy be upon him, he says:
The Quran of Your grace, in it the mouth opens,
Praising and with sincerity, your remembrance concludes.
And on the horizon of your cradle from your striving, it shone,
For victory signs on your face are drawn.
You are Al-Hussein, and beyond your glory in exaltation,
The glory of Christ, and beyond your mother is Mary.
Indeed, you were born pure in a mantle,
From the purity of Fatima, woven and sewn.
And indeed, you were killed in a place named after it,
The glory of death over life grows mighty.
And the truth from your eyes emanates its light,
And honesty in your lips is like a burning ember.
Your forehead became, as it is the distinction of guidance,
With the blood of martyrdom and happiness marked.
And I recited for the blessed victory a chapter,
With an arrow on the pages of your heart it is inscribed.
I dyed my forelock in the altar of a corpse,
In its bleeding throat a dagger carves.
And I knew that indeed it is the guidance of the family of Muhammad,
And the throne of your cradle on the day of your creation is a mourning place.

The Ninth Council: The Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) Foretelling of Al-Hussein's (peace be upon him) Martyrdom
It is narrated from Aban ibn Taghlib, from Abu Abdullah, from his father (peace be upon them) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Whoever wishes to live my life, die my death, and enter the Paradise of my Lord, the Garden of Eden planted by His own hand, should be devoted to Ali, support his supporters, oppose his enemies, and follow the rightful successors after him. They are the leaders of guidance after me, endowed by Allah with my understanding and knowledge, and they are my progeny."

To God I complain of my nation, those who deny their virtue, sever my ties with them, and by God, they will kill my son, meaning Hussein, and may God not grant them my intercession.
Al-Awwam, the client of Quraysh, said: I heard my master, Umar ibn Hubayrah, say: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with Hasan and Husayn in his lap, kissing one at times and kissing the other at times, and saying to Husayn: "Woe unto me if I kill you."
It was narrated from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) that he said: One day, Hussein ibn Ali was in the lap of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), playing and laughing with him. Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, how very fond you are of this boy!" He replied to her, "Woe to you, how can I not love him and be fond of him, as he is the fruit of my heart and the apple of my eye? And indeed, my nation shall kill him, and whoever visits him after his death, Allah will record for him a pilgrimage from my pilgrimages." She said, "O Messenger of Allah, a pilgrimage from your pilgrimages?" He said, "Yes, and two pilgrimages from my pilgrimages." She asked, "O Messenger of Allah, two pilgrimages from your pilgrimages?" He said, "Yes, and four." Thus, she continued increasing and he continued augmenting until it reached ninety pilgrimages of the pilgrimages of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) along with their benefits.
Abdullah bin Muhammad al-San'ani reported from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) who said: Whenever Hussein (peace be upon him) would enter, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would draw him close, then say to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): Hold him, and then he would embrace him, kiss him, and weep. Hussein would ask: Father, why are you crying? He would reply: My son, I kiss the spots where the swords will strike you and I weep. Hussein asked: Father, will I be killed? He replied: Yes, by Allah, you, your father, and your brother will be killed. Hussein asked: Father, will our resting places be separate? He said: Yes, my son. Hussein asked: Who will visit us from your nation? He said: None will visit me, your father, your brother, and you except for the true believers from my nation.
Ibn Shahr Ashoob, may he rest in peace, narrated in "Al-Manaqib," from Ibn Abbas who said: I asked...

Aisha asked the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) to interpret a dream, and he said: "Tell her to recount her dream." She said: "I saw as if the sun had risen above me, and the moon emerged from beneath me, and a star black in color came out of the moon. It clung to the sun, which was smaller than the sun coming out from it, and swallowed it, and the horizon darkened after swallowing it. Then I saw stars appearing from the sky and darkened stars on the earth, except that the darkened ones surrounded the horizon from every place."
The eyes of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) filled with tears, and then he said, "It is Hind. Leave, O enemy of God," twice, "for you have rekindled my sorrow and announced to me the deaths of my loved ones." When she left, he said, "O Allah, curse her and curse her descendants."
He was asked about its interpretation and he (peace be upon him and his family) said: "As for the sun that rose upon it, it is Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), and the star that appeared like the black moon is Muawiyah, who is seduced, immoral, and a denier of God. And as for the darkness you mentioned, where you saw a star coming out of the black moon and attacking a smaller sun that emerged from the sun and consumed it, turning it black, that represents my son, Hussein (peace be upon him), who will be killed by the son of Muawiyah, causing the sun to darken and the horizon to become gloomy. As for the black stars in the land that surrounded the land from every place, those are the Umayyads."
Ibn Abbas narrated that during the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), he would say, "Call for me my beloved." They called for him man after man, but he would turn away from them. It was said to Fatimah, "Go to Ali, for we see that the Messenger of Allah desires no one but Ali." So Fatimah sent for Ali (peace be upon him).
When Ali entered, the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) lit up with delight and his face brightened. He then said, "Come to me, O Ali, come to me, O Ali." He continued to draw him closer until he took his hand and seated him by his head. The Prophet then fainted.
Then Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (peace be upon them) came in crying and shouting until they threw themselves upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). Ali (peace be upon him) wanted to move them away, but the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) regained consciousness and said: "O Ali, let me inhale their fragrance and let them inhale mine, and let me take my leave from them."

They both derive from me, and indeed, they will be wronged after me and killed unjustly, so the curse of God be upon those who wrong them. He said this three times, then he extended his hand to Ali (peace be upon him), pulled him towards him under the garment he was wearing, and placed his mouth on his mouth, conversing with him at length until his pure soul departed. May God's blessings be upon him and his family.
From the book "Dalāʾil al-Imāmah" by Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, narrated with a chain of transmission from Hudhayfah, who said: I heard al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them) say: "By God, the tyrants of Banu Umayyah will gather to kill me, and Umar ibn Sa'd will lead them, and this was during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family)." So I asked him: "Did the Messenger of God inform you of this?" He replied: "No," and so I went to the Prophet and informed him. He said: "His knowledge is my knowledge, and my knowledge is his knowledge; for we know what shall be before it happens."
Abdullah ibn Yahya said: We went with Ali to Siffin, and when we reached Nineveh, he called out, "Be patient, O Abu Abdullah." He then said, "I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, and his eyes were flowing with tears. I said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, what makes your eyes overflow? Has someone upset you?' He said, 'No, but Gabriel was just with me and informed me that Husayn will be killed on the banks of the Euphrates. He said, 'Would you like to smell its soil?' I said, 'Yes.' So he extended his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me. I could not hold back my tears, and the name of the land is Karbala.'"
When two years had passed, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) set out on a journey. At a certain point along the way, he paused, and his eyes filled with tears, whereupon he was asked about this. He said: "This is Gabriel informing me of a land near the banks of the Euphrates called Karbala, where my son Hussein will be killed. It is as if I can see him and his place of demise and burial there. It is as if I can see the captives on the backs of camels, and my son Hussein's head being presented to Yazid—may God curse him. By God, no one will look upon the head of Hussein and rejoice without God causing discord between his heart and his tongue, and God will punish him with a severe torment."

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) returned from his journey feeling sorrowful, troubled, and deeply saddened. He ascended the pulpit, taking Hasan and Husayn with him. He addressed and admonished the people through his sermon. After finishing his speech, he placed his right hand on Hasan's head and his left hand on Husayn's head, and said:
"O Allah, indeed Muhammad is Your servant and messenger, and these two are the finest of my descendants, the best among my lineage, and the greatest of my progeny. I leave them as my successors among my community. Gabriel has informed me that one of these sons will be killed through poison, and the other will be a martyr, drenched in blood. O Allah, bless him in his martyrdom and make them leaders among the martyrs. O Allah, do not bless their killer and betrayer, place him in the heat of Your fire, and gather him in the lowest depths of Hell."
He said: The people cried and wailed, so the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to them: "O people! Do you weep for him but do not support him? O Allah, be his protector and helper." Then he said: "O my people! I am leaving among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family, my roots, the foundation of my being, the fruit of my heart, and my essence, and they will not separate until they come to me at the Basin. Verily, I do not ask you for anything in return except what my Lord has commanded me to ask from you, I ask you for affection for my kin. Beware lest you meet me tomorrow at the Basin after having harmed my family, killed my household, and oppressed them."
"Behold, on the Day of Judgment, three banners from this nation will come to me: the first is a black, dark banner, from which the angels are terrified. It will stop before me, and I will ask them, 'Who are you?' They will have forgotten my memory and will say, 'We are the people of monotheism from the Arabs.' I will say to them, 'I am Ahmad, the Prophet of the Arabs and the non-Arabs.' They will say, 'We are of your community.' I will ask them, 'How did you treat my family, my household, and the Book of my Lord after me?' They will say, 'As for the Book, we neglected it, and as for the family, we sought to annihilate them from the surface of the earth.' When I hear this from them, I will turn my face away from them, and they will depart thirsty with blackened faces."
Then another banner, even darker than the first, will confront me. I will ask them: How did you treat the two weighty entities I left behind for you: the Book of God and my family? They will respond: As for the greater one, we opposed it, and as for the lesser one, we tore them to pieces. I will say: Go away from me, and they will depart thirsty, their faces blackened.
