Then he left, pierced through the battlefield,
An arrow struck his chest, and thus his neck.
The generous valiant brother, unsurpassed with gifts,
Fell a martyr, while around him the foals neighed.
A sharp spear tore into him deeply,
And a gleaming sword cut his veins.
The winds swept over his fallen figure,
And a cloth woven by the brave draped him.
The seven heavens quaked and shook,
The earth's mountains trembled, and the sea swelled.
Oh, how the skies wept blood for his death,
And the earth's face turned red with dust mixed with blood.
His garments in war were stained red with blood,
But on the Day of Resurrection, they'll be of green silk.

They said: He (peace be upon him) stood to rest for a moment, exhausted from the battle. While he was standing, a stone hit his forehead, so he took a cloth to wipe the blood from his face. Then a sharp, poisoned arrow with three prongs came and struck him in the chest, and according to some narrations, it hit his heart. Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) said: "In the name of God and with the help of God, and upon the religion of the Messenger of God." He raised his head to the sky and said: "My God! You know that they are killing a man, the only son of a prophet on the face of the earth." He then took the arrow and pulled it out of his back, and blood gushed out like a waterspout. He placed his hand on the wound, and when it filled with blood, he cast it towards the sky, and not a single drop of that blood returned. It is said that the redness in the sky was not known until Husayn (peace be upon him) threw his blood towards the sky. Then he placed his hand again, and when it was full, he smeared it on his head and beard, saying: "This is how I shall be until I meet my grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and I am covered in my blood. I will say: O Messenger of God! So-and-so has killed me."
Then the fighting weakened and stopped. Every time a man approached and reached him, he would turn away from him, until a man from Kinda, named Malik ibn al-Nasr, came. He insulted Hussain (peace be upon him) and struck him on the head with a sword, while Hussain was wearing a hood that became filled with blood. Hussain (peace be upon him) said to him, "May you neither eat nor drink with it, and may God gather you with the wrongdoers." Then he removed the hood, put on a cap, and wrapped a turban around it.

He was exhausted, and the soldier from Kinda took the cloak which was of high quality. When he returned after the battle to his wife, she prepared to wash the blood off it. His wife said to him, "Do you enter my house with the spoils of the son of the Messenger of Allah? Leave me, may Allah fill your grave with fire." After that, he remained in poverty and in the worst condition; his hands became dry. In the winter, they would ooze blood, and in the summer, they would dry up as if they were two sticks.
Sheikh Al-Mufid and Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may mercy be upon them, said: They stayed a short while, then returned to him and surrounded him. Abdullah, the son of Al-Hassan ibn Ali (peace be upon them), who was a young boy not yet of age, rushed out from among the women and stood by Al-Hussain (peace be upon him). Zainab, the daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), followed to hold him back, but Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) said: "Hold him back, my sister!" Yet he refused and insisted, saying: "No, by God, I will not leave my uncle." As Umar ibn Sa'ad, or it is said Harmala ibn Kahil, approached Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) with a sword, the boy said to him: "Woe to you, son of the wicked woman! Will you kill my uncle?" The attacker struck with the sword, but the boy shielded himself with his hand, severing it to the skin, so it hung by a thread. The boy cried: "O mother!" Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) held him close and said: "O my nephew! Be patient with what has befallen you, and seek reward for it, for God will reunite you with your righteous ancestors." Sayyid reported that then Harmala ibn Kahil shot an arrow at him, slaughtering him while he was in the arms of his uncle, Al-Hussain (peace be upon him).
Mr. Ibn Tawus, may mercy be upon him, said: Shimar ibn Dhi al-Jawshan attacked the tent of Husayn (peace be upon him) and struck it with a spear. Then he said, "Bring me fire to burn it with those inside." Husayn (peace be upon him) said to him, "O son of Dhi al-Jawshan! You call for fire to burn my family? May God burn you with fire." Then Shabath came and rebuked him, causing him to feel ashamed and withdraw.
The narrator said: When he (peace be upon him) was overwhelmed by wounds and remained like a hedgehog, Saleh bin Wahb Al-Muzani stabbed him in his side, causing him (peace be upon him) to fall from his horse to the ground on his right cheek. Then...

Peace and blessings be upon him.
To the great poet Sayyed Haidar Al-Hilli, may mercy be upon him, he says:
So he faced the crowds as a single person,
Yet in terror, every limb was a multitude.
His spear was in his hand, as if
From his determination, the blade of his sword was crafted.
He wedded the sword to souls, but
Its dowry was death and the staining blood.
And in another brilliant piece, he says:
Steady, while below him the earth
Trembles, shaking its plains.
More settled than the surface of the earth,
When terror grips its peers.
His face remains bright and calm,
Even when fear changes others' hues.
Dusty, when seen by the cowardly,
Fear steals their colors.
The war revealed no one like him,
Struck down, he intimidates even the brave.

She said: Zainab went out from the tent calling: "Oh my brother! Oh my master! Oh family! I wish the sky would fall upon the earth, and the mountains would crumble upon the plains."
He said: Shamir shouted, "What are you waiting for with the man?" They attacked him from all sides. Zer'a bin Sharik struck him on his shoulder, and Hussein struck Zer'a, bringing him down. Another struck him on his sacred shoulder with a sword, causing him to fall forward on his face. Exhausted, he began to stagger and fall. Sinan bin Anas al-Nakha'i thrust a spear into his clavicle, pulled it out, and then thrust it into his chest. Sinan also shot an arrow that struck his neck. He fell and sat up, pulled the arrow from his neck and clasped his hands together, and whenever they filled with his blood, he would smear it on his head and beard, saying: "Like this until I meet Allah, stained with my blood, my right having been taken by force."

Al-Humeid bin Muslim reported: Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), came out, exclaiming, "If only the sky would collapse onto the earth! O Umar ibn Sa'ad! Is Abu Abdullah to be killed while you merely watch?" Tears streamed down Umar's cheeks and beard, and he turned his face away from her. Meanwhile, Husayn (peace be upon him) sat there, wearing a silk robe, surrounded by people hesitant to harm him. Shimar shouted, "Woe to you! What are you waiting for? Though he has been weakened by wounds and arrows, kill him! May your mothers be bereaved of you!" They attacked him from all sides.
The narrator said that Husayn stumbled and rose again, when Sinan charged at him and stabbed him with a spear, causing him to fall. According to one account, he fell on his right cheek, and Sinan said to Khawli bin Yazid, "Sever his head!" But Khawli hesitated as his hand trembled. Sinan cursed him, saying, "May God ruin your strength and sever your limbs." Then Shimar, may God curse him, descended, being a loathsome leper, kicked Husayn onto his back, grabbed his beard, and Husayn (peace be upon him) said, "You are the spotted one I saw in my dream." Shimar replied, "Do you liken me to dogs?" Then he began to cut Husayn’s throat with his sword.
In the book of virtues, it is narrated with a chain of transmission from Muhammad bin Amr bin Al-Hassan, who said: We were with Al-Hussain by the river of Karbala, and he looked at Shimir bin Dhil-Jawshan, who had vitiligo, and said: "God is Greatest! God is Greatest! God and His Messenger spoke the truth. The Messenger of God said: 'It is as if I see a speckled dog licking the blood of my family.'"
It is said that Shimr and Sanan ibn Anas came to him while Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) was in his final moments, as his tongue was parched from thirst and he was asking for water. Shimr—may God curse him—kicked him with his foot and said, "O son of Abu Turab! Do you not claim that your father is at the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) basin giving drink to whom he loves? Be patient until you take water from his hand." Then he told Sanan, "Decapitate him from his back." But Sanan replied, "By God, I will not do it, lest their grandfather Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) becomes my adversary."
Shamir, may God curse him, became enraged and sat upon the chest of Al-Hussain, grabbing his beard and intending to kill him. Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) laughed and said to him, "Do you kill me without knowing who I am?" Shamir replied, "I know you well enough."

A sparrow attacked the falcon, what a wonder.
Shamir slaughtered Hussein, angered by God's jealousy.
Oh Haidar, may God grant you high ranks.
He avenged Badr and Hunayn against the enemies.
Shamir slaughtered Hussein, I wish I were his sacrifice.
Even the angels mourned him, especially the righteous.
The cursed Shamir did not know whose chest he struck.
The chest which was a crown over the stars.

Ibn Shahr Ashub, may he rest in peace, narrated: Abu Mikhnaf related from Jalludi that when Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) was slain, his horse started to guard him and attack the enemy riders, toppling them from their saddles and trampling them. The horse killed forty men, then it rolled in Imam Hussain's blood and headed towards the tent, neighing loudly and striking the ground with its hooves.
The respected man, may God be pleased with him, said: When he was killed, may prayers be upon him, a very dark and severe dust storm arose in the sky at that time, accompanied by a red wind, in which nothing could be seen, neither eye nor trace. The people thought that punishment had come upon them, and they remained in that state for a while until it finally cleared from them.
Hilal ibn Nafi' narrated: "I was standing with the companions of Umar ibn Sa'd when a caller shouted: ‘Rejoice, O Commander, for Shimr has killed Al-Hussain.’ So I went out between the two lines and stood over him, and he was in the throes of death. By God, I have never seen a slain man drenched in his blood look more beautiful than him, nor with a more luminous face. The radiance of his face and the awe of his majesty distracted me from thinking about his killing. In that state, he asked for water, and I heard a man say: ‘You shall not taste water until you reach Hell, and drink from its scorching liquid.’ I heard him reply: ‘Shall I go to Hell and drink from its boiling liquid? No, I shall meet my grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and dwell with him in his abode, at a seat of truth with a Sovereign Omnipotent, and I shall drink from water that never becomes stagnant, and I shall complain to him of what you have done to me and how you treated me.’"

They were all so angry, it was as if God had placed no mercy in any of their hearts. They severed his head while he was still speaking to them. I was amazed at their lack of compassion and said, "By God, I will never join you in any endeavor again."
And it was stated in the noble supplication: until they made you bow from your steed, you fell to the ground wounded. Horses trod upon you with their hooves, and tyrants struck you with their swords. The sweat of death covered your forehead as your right and left sides alternated between contraction and relaxation. You cast a faint glance toward your family and camp, but you were too preoccupied with yourself to attend to your children and kin. Your horse ran away swiftly, heading toward your tents, neighing in lamentation.
When the women saw your distressed steed and noticed your saddle askew, they rushed out of their chambers, with their hair disheveled, faces slapped in mourning, unveiled, crying out in wails. Once dignified in honor, now reduced to misery, they hurried to your resting place. Shimr sat upon your chest, thrusting his sword into your throat, seizing your beard with his hand, slaughtering you with his sword. Your senses ceased, your breaths faded, and your head was raised on a spear.

Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Razi narrated from Abu Ja'far the Second (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him: May I be your ransom, what do you say about fasting, for it has been narrated that they are not granted success in fasting? He replied: The angels' invocation against them has indeed been answered. I asked: And how is that, may I be your ransom? He said: When the people killed Hussein, peace be upon him, God, blessed and exalted, ordered an angel to proclaim: O oppressive nation that killed the progeny of its Prophet! May God not grant you success in fasting or breaking fasts.
It is narrated from Razin, who said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: When Hussain son of Ali (peace be upon them) was struck with the sword and his head fell, then as they hurried to sever his head, a caller called out from beneath the Throne.

Oh perplexed and astray nation after your Prophet! May Allah not grant you success on Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. Then, Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: By God, they were not granted success and will not be granted success until the avenger of Hussein (peace be upon him) rises.
And indeed, the esteemed Sheikh Ali al-Jishi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

In the ninth gathering on the day of Ashura, the household of the Prophet (peace be upon him) discouraged fasting on this day due to the Banu Umayyah's display of joy and festivity.
It is mentioned in the Ziyarat Ashura: "O Allah! Indeed, this is the day that the Banu Umayyah blessed, and the son of the accursed who ate livers—cursed by you on the tongue of your prophet (peace be upon him and his family) in every position and stance your prophet stood upon."
It also states: "And this is the day the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan rejoiced at the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him). O Allah! Multiply upon them the curse and the punishment. O Allah! I seek nearness to you on this day and in this position of mine and throughout the days of my life by disavowing them, cursing them, and showing loyalty to your Prophet and the Prophet’s family (peace be upon them)."

For the Umayyads made the day of Ashura a day of joy for the people and ordered them to fast on it, turning it into a day of happiness and celebration. In this regard, some poets have said:
The mourning ceremonies in Iraq were held,
While Umayyads in Sham counted them as festivals.
Fasting is only valid when it is an expression of gratitude, and there is no fasting on the day of Ashura because it is a day of tragedy. It is a day regarded with pessimism by the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), as stated in the narration. However, the Umayyads ordered people to fast on Ashura in celebration of the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him). This has been explicitly mentioned by the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in their noble words and instructions, and they have alerted their followers and supporters to this fact.
Among the narrations by Ja'far ibn Isa, he said: I asked Al-Ridha (peace be upon him) about the fasting of Ashura and what people say about it. He replied: You are asking me about the fast of Ibn Marjana.
It is a day observed by the pretenders from the family of Ziyad to commemorate the killing of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him). It is a day that the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon them) regard as sinister and the people of Islam deem unlucky. A day that the people of Islam view as ill-omened is not to be fasted on or celebrated.
Furthermore, Monday is a day when God Almighty took the Prophet (peace be upon him), and calamity befell the family of Muhammad on Monday, which they considered a bad omen, whereas our adversaries took it as a celebration. Ashura is the day when Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was martyred, honored by Ibn Marjana, yet seen as foreboding by the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them). Whoever fasts on these days or marks them with celebration will meet God, the Blessed and Exalted, with a transformed heart and will be resurrected amongst those who established the practice of fasting on these days and celebrating them.
It is narrated from Zayd Al-Narsi that he said: I heard Ubaid bin Zarara ask Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) about fasting on the day of Ashura. He said: Whoever fasts on this day has their share like that of Ibn Marjana and the family of Ziyad. I asked: What was their share on that day? He replied: The fire, may God protect us.

From the fire and from deeds that bring one closer to the fire.
It is narrated that Abdul Malik said: I asked Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) about fasting on Tasu'a and Ashura of the month of Muharram. He said: Tasu'a is a day when Husayn (peace be upon him) and his companions, may God be pleased with them, were besieged at Karbala, and the cavalry of the people of Sham gathered against him and surrounded him. Ibn Marjana and Omar bin Sa'ad rejoiced over the plentiful cavalry and its abundance, and on that day, they underestimated Husayn (peace be upon him) and his companions, may God be pleased with them, and they were certain that Husayn (peace be upon him) would receive no aid or support from the people of Iraq — alas, the oppressed and lonely one. Then he said: As for the day of Ashura, it is a day when Husayn (peace be upon him) was struck down among his companions, and his companions were slain around him (naked). Is there fasting on that day? No, by the Lord of the Sacred Mosque, it is not a day for fasting; it is only a day of grief and calamity that befell the inhabitants of heaven and earth and upon all believers. It is a day of joy and delight for Ibn Marjana, the family of Ziyad, and the people of Sham, God's wrath upon them and their descendants. It was a day when all the regions of the earth wept except the region of Sham. Whoever fasts on it or considers it blessed will be resurrected by Allah with the family of Ziyad, with a deformed heart and under divine wrath.
It is narrated from Al-Husayn bin Abi Ghandar, from his father, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said: "It is a feast among the feasts of Muslims, and a day of supplication and request." I said: "What about fasting on the Day of Ashura?" He said: "That is the day on which Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) was killed. If you are rejoicing over it, then fast." Then he said, "The Umayyads vowed that if Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) was killed, they would make that day a feast for them, fasting in it out of gratitude and bringing joy to their children. It became a tradition among the family of Abu Sufyan until today. For that reason, they fast and bring happiness to their families and households on that day." Then he added, "Fasting is not for mourning, but rather it is only for giving thanks for safety, and Al-Husayn (peace be upon him)..."

If you are afflicted with the tragedy of 'Ashura, do not fast, but if you are among those who rejoiced at the safety of the Umayyads, then fast as a way of giving thanks to God Almighty.
Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, in "The Remaining Signs of Past Centuries," after mentioning the events that occurred to Hussein (peace be upon him) on the Day of Ashura, stated: "As for the Umayyads, they dressed in their finest clothes, adorned themselves, used kohl, celebrated, held banquets and feasts, and served sweets and delicacies. This custom was prevalent among the common people during their rule and continued even after their rule ended. As for the Shia, they mourn and weep over the killing of the Master of Martyrs (peace be upon him) on this day."
After mentioning that the Alawites in Egypt used to observe the day of Ashura as a day of mourning and that markets would close on this day, Al-Maqrizi said: When the Ayyubid dynasty rose to power, the kings from the Ayyubid line began to celebrate Ashura as a day of happiness. They would be generous towards their families, indulge in feasts, purchase new utensils, use kohl, and frequent the baths, following the customs of the people of the Levant. This tradition was instituted for them by Al-Hajjaj during the era of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan to spite the followers of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), who observed Ashura as a day of mourning and grief for Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) because he was killed on this day. He stated: I have lived through the remainder of the days when the Ayyubids celebrated Ashura as a day of joy and revelry.
Al-Zarandi said, in the context of his discussion about the Nawasib and the ignorant who have made the day of Ashura a day of celebration and joy: They have turned this day into a festival, showing signs of happiness and delight, either because they are Nawasib who are hostile towards Hussein and his family (peace be upon them), or because they are ignorant... They displayed adornments, such as using henna, wearing new clothes, and bathing.

The expenses expand, and foods and grains that are outside of tradition are prepared, and they act as they do on holidays, claiming that this is customary and a part of tradition. However, tradition is to leave all of that, for there is nothing reliable on this matter that has been reported, nor any authentic tradition that one can depend on or refer to.
Some notable scholars, known for their expertise in the fields of Hadith and religious knowledge, were asked about the practices people engage in during the day of Ashura, such as applying kohl, bathing, using henna, wearing new clothes, expressing joy, and other similar activities. They responded that there is no authentic Hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or his companions that endorse these actions. None of the leading Muslim scholars, including the four imams or others, have deemed these practices as recommended. Moreover, the authors of the esteemed Islamic texts have not reported anything—authentic or weak—regarding these actions from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
It has been narrated by some of the later scholars regarding this matter that whoever puts eyeliner on Ashura Day will not suffer from eye ailments that year, whoever bathes on this day will not fall ill that year, and whoever is generous towards his family on this day, God will be generous to him for the rest of the year. All such claims are false and fabricated.
I say: O followers of the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), it is your right to weep and mourn on this day for the calamity and misfortune of the Prophet’s grandchild (peace be upon him and his family) and the joy of the heart of Zahra, the chaste one (peace be upon her). Truly, it is a great calamity and a misfortune that would cause even the towering mountains to shatter. This significant affliction has saddened and brought tears to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), the Commander of the Faithful, Lady Fatimah, the mistress of all women, Al-Hasan Al-Mujtaba, and the rest of the Imams of the family of the House (peace be upon them).
In the revered visitation text narrated from Imam Al-Mahdi (May our souls be his ransom), addressing Al-Husayn, the Master of Martyrs (peace be upon him), it is said: "You were a son to the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), a rescuer of the Quran, a support for the community, diligent in obedience, a guardian of the covenant and the pledge, turning away from the paths of the corrupt, exerting the utmost effort, long in bowing and prostration, and abstaining from this world like one who is about to depart from it."

Looking at it with the eyes of those wary of it, your hopes are withheld from it, your ambition turned away from its ornaments, your glances averted from its splendor, and your desire for the hereafter is well-known. Then, when injustice spreads its wings, oppression unveils its facade, and folly summons its followers, you dwell in the sanctity of your glory, distant from the wrongdoers, companion to the house of worship and the mihrab, isolated from pleasures and desires. You denounce the reprehensible with your heart and tongue, according to your capacity and ability.
Thus, when it was incumbent upon you to repudiate wrongdoing and you were obligated to strive against the wicked, you advanced with your family, your followers, and your supporters. You boldly proclaimed the truth with evidence and called to God with wisdom and good admonition. You commanded the establishment of just boundaries and obedience to the worshipped one and prohibited vile deeds and tyranny. They confronted you with injustice and aggression. You struggled against them after persuading them and affirming the argument against them. They broke their pledge with you, angered your Lord and grandfather, and initiated war against you. You stood firm against spears and blows, shattered the armies of the wicked, and stormed through the dust with the fighting sword, as though you were the chosen Ali. When they saw you steadfast, unwavering, and unafraid, they laid traps of their deceit for you and fought you with their treachery and evil. The accursed one commanded his forces, preventing you from accessing water, engaging you in battle quickly. They attacked you with arrows and spears, extended their hands to destroy you, and showed no remorse nor tasked vigilance, killing your loved ones and plundering your camps. You were at the forefront of the onslaughts, enduring the hardships, and the angels of the heavens marveled at your patience. They surrounded you from all sides, wounded you with injuries, and blocked your path to rest. When there was no helper left for you, you endured the struggle with patience, defending your women and children.
When adversity brought you down from your horse, you fell to the ground wounded. Horses trampled you with their hooves and tyrants struck you with their swords. Destiny marked your forehead for death as your left and right side moved in and out of contraction and relaxation. You secretly turned your gaze towards your provisions and home.

You became preoccupied with yourself, neglecting your child and family, as your horse sped away aimlessly towards the tents, neighing and crying. When the women saw your disgraced horse, and noticed your saddle twisted upon it, they emerged from their quarters, with their hair unveiled over their faces, hitting their faces in mourning, lamenting with unveiled faces, calling out in wailing, having been once resolute, now subdued, they hurried towards your place, while Shimir sat upon your chest, plunging his sword into your throat, his hand clutching your graying beard, slaughtering you with his blade. Your senses had quieted, your breaths were hidden, and your head was raised upon the spear.
While Shimir is busy slaughtering a calf,
The grandson is downfallen, calling and begging.
I'm amazed how you escaped from Shimir with Hussein,
As he climbed upon the chest with injustice and he was shod.
How could he step upon the chest of the leader,
While the lowest star was beneath the feet of Zohal?
I would sacrifice Hussein lying without a grave,
Without a wash other than the blood from his neck.
His blood rained down upon his gray hair, a torrent,
And the body was adorned by the adornment of jewels.
The head rose above the staff,
Both Mars and Aries wept at its carrying.
Shimir slaughtered Hussein, oh if only I had shielded him,
Making the angels weep for him, especially the pious ones.
The cursed Shimir did not realize what chest he climbed upon,
A chest that ruled proudly above the heads of the two worlds.
Among them is Zaynab with a wounded eyelid, distracted and bereaved,
Striking her cheeks, in her heart grief races.
She laments for the grandson with a grieving heart as she says,
My eye has been afflicted by the envy in my eye, through the light of my eye.

The First Night of the Eleventh: The Calamity of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and His Grief over the Killing of Hussein (peace be upon him)
In the Noble Ziyarat Al-Nahiyah, it is mentioned: "With your killing, they have killed Islam, disrupted prayer and fasting, violated customs and laws, demolished the foundations of faith, distorted the verses of the Quran, and indulged in tyranny and aggression. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) has become bereaved, the Book of Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, abandoned, truth overcome and oppressed, and with your loss, the call of 'Allah Akbar' and 'La ilaha illallah' has vanished, prohibitions and permissions, revelations and exegesis have been lost. After you, changes and alterations, atheism and neglect, desires and misguidance, seditions and falsehoods have appeared."
A mourner stood at the grave of your grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and mourned you with flowing tears, saying: "O Messenger of God, your grandson and servant has been killed, your family and protectors have been violated, your descendants have been taken captive after you, and calamity has befallen your offspring and kin." The Messenger of God was disturbed, and his sorrowful heart wept.
The angels and prophets consoled him, and your mother Fatimah al-Zahra was devastated by your loss. The ranks of the close angels came to offer condolences to your father, the Commander of the Faithful, and mourning ceremonies were held for you in the highest heavens. The Houris slapped their faces in grief over you, and the skies and their inhabitants wept for you, as did the gardens and their keepers, the hills and their surroundings, the earth and its regions, the seas and their fish, Mecca and its structures, Paradise and its youth, the House and the Station, the Sacred Monument, and those who are unrestricted and those in spiritual devotion.
Sheikh Al-Tusi, may he rest in peace, narrated with a chain of transmission from Imam Al-Sadiq Ja'far bin Muhammad (peace be upon them), who said: "One day, Umm Salamah (may God be pleased with her) woke up crying. She was asked: 'Why are you crying?' She replied: 'My son Hussein was killed last night, and I had not seen the Messenger of God in a dream until...'"

I saw him last night, looking pale and sorrowful. I asked, "Why do I see you, O Messenger of God, looking pale and sorrowful?" He replied, "I have been digging graves tonight for Hussein and his companions, peace be upon him and them."
It is narrated that Salma from Medina said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gave a vial of sand from the land of Tayy to Umm Salama and said to her: "When this turns into fresh blood, then my son Hussain has been killed." Salma continued: A loud wailing arose from the room of Umm Salama. I was the first to reach her, and I asked, "What has happened to you, O Mother of the Believers?" She replied, "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in a dream, with dust on his head. I asked, 'What is wrong?' He said, 'People have attacked my son and killed him. I witnessed him being killed just now.'" My skin shuddered, and I rushed to the vial and found it seething with blood, Salma said: I saw it placed before her.
Zar ibn Habish narrated from Salma who said: I entered upon Umm Salama while she was crying, so I asked her, "Why are you crying?" She replied, "I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) in a dream, and there were traces of dust on his head and beard. I asked, 'Why are you covered in dust, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'I have just witnessed the killing of Al-Hussain.'"
Narrated Sheikh Al-Tusi, may mercy be upon him, from Ibn Abbas: While I was resting in my house, I heard a great, loud cry from the house of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). I went towards her house, accompanied by my guide, and the people of Medina, men and women, also rushed to her. When I reached her, I asked: "O Mother of the Believers, why are you crying and seeking help?" She did not answer me but turned to the Hashemite women and said: "O daughters of Abdul Muttalib, help me and weep with me, for your master, the master of the youth of Paradise, has been killed. By God, the grandson of the Messenger of God, Hussein, has been killed." I asked: "O Mother of the Believers, how do you know this?" She replied: "I saw the Messenger of God in a dream."
