The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

(376)
Then your father was Ali, known for his generosity,
That one whom we recognize as the guardian,
And Hasan, the virtuous and agreeable leader,
And the winged youth, the courageous knight,
And he fought like a lion of Allah, a living martyr, then he carried on fighting until he was killed. May Allah have mercy on him.
Then Zohair ibn Al-Qain, may God be pleased with him, stepped forward, reciting his battle poetry as he went.
I am Zuhair, son of Al-Qayn
I defend you with the sword for Husayn
Indeed, Husayn is one of the two grandsons
From the pure, righteous, and adorned lineage
He is the Messenger of God's grandson, beyond falsehood
I strike you, and I see no disgrace in it
Oh, if only my soul could be divided into two parts.

Muhammad bin Abi Talib narrated: He fought until he had killed one hundred and twenty men. Then Kathir bin Abdullah the Sha'bi and Muhajir bin Aws al-Tamimi attacked him and killed him. When Zuhair was struck down, Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) said: "May God not distance you, O Zuhair! And cursed be your killers, cursed like those who were transformed into apes and pigs."
Then Saeed bin Abdullah al-Hanafi came forward, chanting in verse:
Come forward, Hussein, today you meet Ahmad
And your wise elder, Ali, the generous one
And Hasan like the full moon, the fortunate has arrived
And your noble uncle, the brave, the wise is guided
Hamza, the lion of God, called the lion
And the one with two wings has taken his seat
In the paradise of Eden, he will ascend with honor.
He said: He did not stop fighting until he was killed.
Then Habib ibn Muzahir al-Asadi appeared and said:
I am a beloved, and my father is renowned,
A knight of battles and a kindled war,
And you are more in number when many,
And we have the stronger and more visible arguments,
And you are less faithful when it comes to loyalty,
And we are more faithful and patient than you.
Truly, you are more nurturing and forgiving than we are.
(377)
A fierce battle ensued, and then a man from the tribe of Banu Tamim attacked him and stabbed him. As he tried to get up, Husayn ibn Numayr—may God curse him—struck him on the head with a sword, causing him to fall. The man from Tamim came down and severed his head, which greatly saddened Hussein (peace be upon him), who said, "I entrust my life and the protectors of my companions to God." According to Muhammad ibn Abi Talib, he killed sixty-two men. Husayn ibn Numayr killed him and hung his head around his horse's neck.
The narrator said: Then Hilal ibn Nafi' al-Bajali stepped forward and said:
I shoot with it as a sign, her tops above.
And the soul, her concern does not benefit her.
Poisoned, with it fly her disappointments.
Her shooters will surely fill her land.
He shot his arrows at them until they were depleted. Then, he reached for his sword, drew it, and began to say:
I am the Yemeni Bajali youth
My religion is the religion of Husayn and Ali
If I am killed today, that is my hope
For that is my view, and I fulfill my action
He killed thirteen men, and they broke his arms and took him captive. Then Shimr came to him and struck his neck.
He said: Then a young man whose father had been killed in the battle came forth, accompanied by his mother. His mother said to him: "Go forth, my son, and fight before the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)." So he went out, and Hussain said: "This is a young man whose father has been killed, and perhaps his mother is reluctant for him to go out." But the young man said: "My mother ordered me to do so," and he advanced while saying:
My prince is Hussein, and what a splendid prince he is.
The joy of the heart of the bearer of good and bad news.
Ali and Fatima are his parents.
So do you know anyone comparable to them?
He has an appearance like the morning sun.
He has a countenance like a luminous full moon.
He fought until he was killed, and his head was severed and thrown into the camp of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and it was carried.
(378)
The mother put his head down and said: "Well done, my son! O joy of my heart! O apple of my eye!" Then she threw the head of her son who was brave and killed him, and she took the pole of her tent and attacked them while saying:
I am an old woman, my lord, weak
Hollow, worn-out, and thin
I strike you with a violent blow
Without the noble daughter of Fatima
She struck two men and killed them. Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) ordered her to be dismissed and prayed for her.
Muhammad bin Abi Talib said: When Aabis bin Abi Shabeeb Al-Shakiri came with him, there was also Shawdhab, the freed slave of Shakir. He said: "Oh Shawdhab! What do you intend to do?" Shawdhab replied, "What should I do? I will fight until I am killed." He said, "That is what I expected of you. Go ahead and present yourself before Abu Abdullah so he may reckon you among the others, for this is a day when we should seek rewards in everything we can, for there is no work after this day, only reckoning."
He approached and greeted Hussein (peace be upon him) and said: "O Abu Abdullah! By Allah, there is no one on the face of the earth, near or far, dearer and more beloved to me than you. If I could defend you against oppression or death with anything more precious than my own soul and my blood, I would do so. Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah! I bear witness that I am on your guidance and the guidance of your father." He then proceeded towards them with his sword.
Qaraba ibn Tamim said: When I saw him coming, I recognized him, as I had seen him in battles, and he was the bravest of men. So I said: "Oh people! This is the lion of lions, this is the son of Abu Shibib. Let none of you go out to him." He began calling out: "Is there a man? Is there a man?"
Omar ibn Saad said: "Throw stones at him from every side." When he saw that, he cast off his armor and helmet, then charged at the people. By God, I saw him drive away more than two hundred men. Then they closed in on him from all sides and he was killed. I saw his head in the hands of several men, each saying, "I killed him," while another said the same. Omar ibn Saad said: "Do not argue; he was not killed by just one person." And thus, he resolved the dispute among them with this statement.
(379)
Then Abdullah and Abdurrahman, the sons of Al-Ghifari, came to him and said, "O Abu Abdullah! Peace be upon you. We have come to fight and defend you." He replied, "Welcome, come closer to me." They approached him, both weeping. He asked, "O sons of my brother! Why do you weep? By Allah, I hope that after an hour, your eyes will be at rest." They said, "May Allah make us your ransom, we do not weep for ourselves, but rather for you. We see that you are surrounded, and we cannot help you." He said, "May Allah reward you, O sons of my brother, for your affection and willingness to sacrifice yourselves for me with the best reward for the pious." Then they came forward and said, "Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah." He replied, "And peace be upon you both, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." They fought until they were killed.
He said: Then a Turkish boy who belonged to Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came out, and he was a Quran reciter. He went to fight, killed a group, and then fell as a martyr. Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came to him, wept, and placed his cheek upon the boy's cheek. The boy opened his eyes, saw Al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and smiled before he passed on to his Lord. May God be pleased with him.
He said: Thumama ibn Yazid ibn al-Sha’thaa had eight arrows, and he did not miss with five of them. Every time he shot, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) would say: "O Allah, guide his shot and reward him with Paradise." Then they charged at him and killed him.
The narrator said: A man came and asked, "Where is Hussein?" He replied, "Here I am." The man said, "Rejoice at the fire you will enter immediately." Hussein responded, "Rather, I rejoice in a merciful Lord and an obeyed intercessor. Who are you?" The man said, "I am Muhammad bin Al-Ash'ath." Hussein then said, "O Allah, if Your servant is lying, take him to the fire and make him a sign for his companions today." It was not long before the man turned his horse and was thrown off it, his foot caught in a stirrup. The horse trampled him until it was cut, and his insides fell to the ground. By God, I was amazed at the swiftness of Hussein's supplication.
Then another person came and said: "Where is Hussein?" He replied: "Here I am." The man said: "Rejoice in the fire." Hussein replied: "I rejoice in a merciful Lord, and an obedient intercessor. Who are you?" The man answered: "I am Shamir ibn Dhi al-Jawshan."
(380)
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) said, "Allahu Akbar! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: 'I saw as if a mottled dog was licking the blood of my family.' And Hussein said: 'I saw as if dogs were biting me, among which a mottled dog was the most severe against me, and that dog was you,' and he was a leper."
It is narrated from Al-Tirmidhi: It was said to Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): How long can a vision be delayed? He mentioned the dream of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and its interpretation came after sixty years.
Muhammad bin Abi Talib and others said: Men would come to Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) one by one and say, "Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God." Al-Hussein would reply, "And peace be upon you. We stand behind you." Then he would recite: "Among them are those who have fulfilled their vows and among them are those who are still waiting." Until they were all martyred, may Allah's mercy be upon them, and none remained with Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) except his family.
To the honorable Mr. Reda Al-Hindi, may he rest in peace, who said:
They roamed and fulfilled what was due to their master.
In a stance where elders and children became confused.
And the cherished one of the Chosen returned alone,
Among the enemies with no protector or supporter.
He charges at them with his sword, defeating them,
While they are thirty thousand, and he is alone.
Had you wished, O Cause of All Creation, to erase them,
Not one of them would have remained on the battlefield.
The Fifth Council, on the day of Ashura - The Martyrdom of Banu Hashim (peace be upon them)

Some narrators, as mentioned in Bihar al-Anwar, said: When the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him) were killed and none remained except his household - who were the descendants of Ali, the descendants of Ja'far, the descendants of Aqeel, the descendants of Hassan, and his own (peace be upon them).
(381)
They gathered, bidding each other farewell, and resolved to go to war.
Abu al-Faraj narrated in "Al-Maqatil" from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father (peace be upon them), that the first person from the descendants of Abu Talib to be killed alongside Hussein was his son Ali (peace be upon them).
They said: Then Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) advanced, and Husayn (peace be upon him) raised his gray hair towards the sky and said: "O Allah, bear witness against these people, for there has come forth a young man who resembles your Messenger the most in appearance, character, and speech. Whenever we missed seeing your Prophet, we would look at his face. O Allah, deprive them of the blessings of the earth, disperse them completely, and tear them apart. Make them divided and never let those in power be pleased with them, for they called us to assist us, but then they attacked us and fought against us."
Then Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) called out to Umar ibn Saad: "What is wrong with you? May God cut off your progeny and not bless you in your endeavors. May He send upon you someone who will kill you on your bed after me, as you have severed my kinship ties and have not honored my relation to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family)." Then Hussein (peace be upon him) raised his voice and recited:

"Indeed, God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran over the worlds * Descendants, some of them from others, and God is Hearing, Knowing."

Then Ali ibn Hussein charged at the crowd, saying:
I am Ali, the son of Al-Husayn, the son of Ali
From the clan whose grandfather is the Prophet,
By God, the son of a spurious cannot rule over us
I will spear you until it bends,
I will strike you with my sword, defending my father
A strike from a Hashemite, Alawite youth.
He continued to fight fiercely until people were wearied by the sheer number of those he had killed. It is narrated that during their thirst, he killed a hundred and twenty men. Then he returned to his father, having been wounded many times, and said, "Father! Thirst has overcome me, and the weight of the armor has exhausted me. Is there any chance for a sip of water?"
(382)
He said to him, "Shall I seek strength through it against the enemies?" Upon this, Hussein (peace be upon him) wept and said: "My son! It grieves Muhammad, Ali the son of Abu Talib, and me that you call them and they do not respond to you, and you seek their help and they do not assist you. My son! Give me your tongue." He took his tongue, sucked it, and handed him his ring, saying: "Keep it in your mouth and return to fight your enemy. For I hope that you will not pass away until your grandfather gives you a drink from his goblet, a full drink after which you will never be thirsty again."

So he returned to the battle, saying:
The war, from it, truths have unfolded
And after its onset, honesty has been revealed
By Allah, the Lord of the Throne, we shall not part
From your ranks, or the lightning shall sheath its spark
The warrior continued to fight fiercely until he killed a full two hundred enemies. Then Nuqadh bin Murrah al-Abdi struck him on the crown of his head with a blow that brought him down. The people then attacked him with their swords. He clung to his horse, which carried him to the enemy camp, where they cut him to pieces with their swords.
When the soul reached the collarbone, he raised his voice saying, "O my father! Here is my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), giving me the most satisfying drink from his cup after which I will never thirst again." He was saying, "Hurry, hurry! For you have a reserved cup to drink from now." Then Hussein (peace be upon him) cried out, "May God kill the people who killed you. How bold they are against the Most Merciful, His Messenger, and for violating the sanctity of the Messenger. May the world after you be desolate."
Al-Humayd bin Muslim said: It is as if I am looking at a woman who came out quickly, like the rising sun, crying out in grief and despair, saying: "Oh my beloved! Oh fruit of my heart! Oh light of my eyes!" I inquired about her and it was said: She is Zaynab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him). They came and she fell upon him, then Husayn came and took her by the hand, returning her to the tent. He approached with his young men and said: "Carry your brother." They carried him from his place of death and brought him to the tent they had been fighting in front of.

He requested, then he killed him. (1)
Among the prominent figures from his family was Abdullah bin Muslim bin Aqil bin Abi Talib. Muhammad bin Abi Talib reported that he fought until he killed ninety-eight men in three charges, after which he was killed by Amr bin Subaih al-Saydawi and Asad bin Malik.
Abu al-Faraj stated: Abdullah ibn Muslim, the mother of whom was Ruqayyah bint Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), was killed by Amr ibn Subayh, as we mentioned from al-Mada'ini and from Humayd ibn Muslim. It is said that an arrow struck him while he was resting his hand on his forehead, piercing his palm and forehead. As for Muhammad ibn Muslim ibn Aqil, his mother was a slave woman, and he was killed by Abu Jarham al-Azdi and Laqeet ibn Iyas al-Juhani, as narrated by Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali (peace be upon them).
Then, Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and others said: After him, Ja'far ibn Aqil went out and killed fifteen horsemen. Ibn Shahr Ashub mentioned that it was said he killed two men, and then Bishr ibn Sotah al-Hamdani killed him.
They said: Then after him, his brother Abdul Rahman bin Aqil came out and killed seventeen knights, and then Uthman bin Khalid Al-Juhani killed him.
Abul-Faraj said: Abdullah, the son of Aqeel ibn Abi Talib, whose mother was a slave woman, was killed by Uthman ibn Khalid ibn Ashim al-Juhani and Bishr ibn Hut al-Qabadi. Abdullah the Elder, the son of Aqeel, whose mother was also a slave woman, was reportedly killed, according to al-Mada'ini, by Uthman ibn Khalid al-Juhani and a man from Hamadan.
Then he said: Muhammad bin Abi Sa'id bin Aqil bin Abi Talib, nicknamed Al-Ahwal, whose mother was a bondwoman, was killed by Luqayt bin Yasar Al-Juhani who shot him with an arrow. Muhammad bin Ali bin Hamza mentioned that Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Aqil was killed alongside him.

It was also mentioned by Muhammad bin Ali bin Hamza that Ali bin Aqil—his mother being a concubine—was killed on that day.
Then they said: After them, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib went out, fought until he killed ten people, and then was killed by 'Amr bin Nahshal al-Tamimi.
Then after him came Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far and he said:
If you deny me, I am the son of Ja'far
A truthful martyr in the lush gardens
Flying within them with a green wing
Enough is this honor on the Day of Gathering
Then he fought until he killed three horsemen and eighteen foot soldiers, and then Abdullah bin Batta Al-Ta'i killed him.
Abu al-Faraj mentioned after the mention of the killings of Muhammad and 'Awn: "'Awn was killed by Abdullah ibn Qutnah al-Tihani and Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib." Yahya ibn al-Hasan stated, in a narration told to me by Ahmad ibn Sa'id about him, that he was killed alongside Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) at the Battle of Karbala.
They said: Then the brothers of Hussein (peace be upon him) stepped forward, determined to die before him. The first to go out among them was Abu Bakr, son of Ali (peace be upon him), whose name was Ubayd Allah. His mother was Layla, daughter of Mas'ud, son of Khalid, son of Rabi' al-Tamimi. He advanced while reciting poetry:
Sheikh Ali, possessor of the most extended honor,
From Hashim, the truthful, the generous, the preferred.
This is Hussein, son of the prophet sent,
Defending them with the polished sword.
My soul would sacrifice itself for the most revered one. He did not fight until Zahr b. Badr al-Nakha'i killed him, and it was said: Abdullah b. Uqba al-Ghanawi, and Abu Ja'far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) mentioned that a man from Hamdan killed him.

They said: Then his brother, Umar bin Ali (peace be upon him), emerged after him and charged towards Zahra, avenging his brother and killed him. He faced the people, striking with his sword in a formidable manner, while saying:
Leave the traditions of God alone, leave Omar
Leave from us the frowning, serious lion
He strikes you with his sword and does not flee
And there is nothing in it like the coward who hides
He defended until he was killed.
Then his brother, Uthman bin Ali (peace be upon him), whose mother was Umm al-Banin bint Hizam bin Khalid from Banu Kilab, came forward, saying:
I am indeed Othman, the one of honors
A noble elder with manifest deeds
And a cousin to the purest prophet
Brother to Hussain, the best of brothers
And the leader of both the great and small
After the Messenger and the supporting guardian
A man from the tribe of Yazid al-Asbahi shot him in the forehead, causing him to fall from his horse. Then, a man from the Banu Aban bin Hazm tribe decapitated him.
Abu al-Faraj narrated from Ubaidullah ibn al-Hasan and Abdullah ibn al-Abbas, who said: Uthman ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of twenty-one. Al-Dhahak, with his chain of narration, reported that Khawli ibn Yazid shot Uthman ibn Ali (peace be upon him) with an arrow, which brought him down. A man from the Banu Aban tribe rushed at him and took his head. It is narrated from Ali (peace be upon him) that he said: "I named him after my brother Uthman ibn Maz'un."
They said: Then after him emerged his brother Ja'far, son of Ali (peace be upon him), whose mother is also Umm al-Banin, as he said:
I am Ja'far, the one of high virtues
The son of Ali, the benevolent, generous in gifts
With my uncle's honor and my maternal uncle's nobility
I protect Husain, the one with generous benevolence
Then Khawli al-Asbahi shot him and hit his sister or his eye.

Then his brother Abdullah bin Ali (peace be upon him) came forward saying:
I am the son of valor and generosity
That is Ali, the good one with noble deeds
The sword of the Messenger of Allah, full of retribution
Among every people, manifest in hardships
He was killed by Hani ibn Thabit al-Hadrami.
It is narrated by Abu al-Faraj from Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hasan and Abdullah ibn al-Abbas, who said: Abdullah ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of twenty-five, and he left no descendants. Ja'far ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of nineteen.
It is reported by Al-Dhahhak Al-Mashriqi that Al-Abbas bin Ali (peace be upon him) said to his brother from both parents, Abdullah bin Ali (peace be upon him): "Go ahead in front of me so I can see you and reckon you as I count your sacrifice, for you have no offspring." So he went ahead in front of him, and Hani bin Thabit Al-Hadrami attacked him and killed him.
It is narrated that Al-Abbas, son of Ali (peace be upon him), placed his brother Ja'far before him, and then Hani bin Thabit, who had killed his brother, attacked him and killed him.
Nasr ibn Muzahim narrated from Abu Ja'far Muhammad (peace be upon him) that Khawl ibn Yazid al-Asbahi killed Ja'far ibn Ali (peace be upon him).
Then he said: "And Muhammad the Younger, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), whose mother was a bondmaid, was killed by a man from Tamim of the Banu Aban ibn Dar."
Al-Majlisi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: In some of the works of our companions, it is mentioned that when Al-Abbas saw his solitude (peace be upon him), he approached his brother and said, "O my brother, is there any permission for me?" Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) wept intensely and then said, "O my brother, you are the bearer of my banner, and if you go, my army will be dispersed!" Al-Abbas replied, "My patience has worn thin, and I am weary of life. I want to seek my revenge on these hypocrites."

Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) said, "Fetch a little water for these children." Abbas went to admonish and warn them, but it did not benefit them, so he returned to his brother and informed him. Hearing the children cry out, "Thirst, thirst!" he mounted his horse, took his spear and water skin, and headed towards the Euphrates. Four thousand men, who were guarding the river, surrounded him and attacked with arrows. He fought them, killing eighty men as reported, until he reached the water.
When he intended to drink a gulp of water, he remembered the thirst of Hussein and his family, so he threw the water away, filled the water bag, and carried it on his right shoulder. As he headed towards the tent, they blocked his path and surrounded him from all sides. He fought them until Nufal al-Azraq struck his right hand and severed it. He then carried the water bag on his left shoulder, and Nufal struck his left hand from the wrist. So, he carried the water bag with his teeth. An arrow came and hit the water bag, spilling its contents. Then another arrow came and struck his chest. He fell from his horse and cried out to his brother Hussein: "Help me." When he came to him, he saw him fallen and cried, carrying him to the tent.
They said: And when Al-Abbas was killed, Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said, "Now my back has been broken, and my plans have faltered."
Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and others said: Then al-Qasim ibn al-Hasan (peace be upon him) went out — he was a small boy who had not yet reached puberty. When al-Husayn saw him stepping forward, he embraced him, and they both began to cry until they were overwhelmed by emotion. Al-Qasim then asked al-Husayn (peace be upon him) for permission to fight, but al-Husayn refused to allow him. The boy continued to kiss his hands and feet until he gave him permission. Al-Qasim went out, tears streaming down his cheeks, and he was saying:
If you deny me, I am the son of Hasan
The grandson of the chosen, trusted Prophet
This is Husayn, like a captive confined
Among people who never tasted the rain

His face was like a full moon, and he fought fiercely, killing thirty-five men despite his young age.
Al-Hamid said: I was in the camp of Ibn Saad, and I was observing this young boy wearing a shirt, an izar, and sandals, one of which had a broken strap—I distinctly remember it was the left one. Amr ibn Saad al-Azdi said, "By God, I will strike him," to which I replied, "Glory be to God! What do you intend by that? By God, even if he struck me, I would not raise my hand against him. Those whom you see surrounding him are enough." He insisted, "By God, I will do it.” He attacked, and before retreating, he struck the boy's head with a sword. The boy fell on his face and called out, "Oh, uncle!"
He said: Then Husayn came swooping down like a falcon, weaving through the ranks, charging like a lion in battle. He struck Amr with his sword; Amr raised his hand to protect himself, but the blow severed it at the elbow. Amr screamed and retreated. The cavalry of the people of Kufa charged to rescue Amr from Husayn, but their horses' hooves trampled him so severely that he died. As the dust settled, there was Husayn standing over the young boy, who was thrashing his feet. Husayn (peace be upon him) said: "By God, it is hard for your uncle that you call him and he does not answer you, or he answers you but cannot help you, or he helps you but it is no use to you. Ruin befall the people who killed you."
Then he carried him, and it was as if I could see the boy's feet dragging on the ground, his chest laid upon his. I thought to myself: what is he doing? He came and placed him among the slain of his family. Then he said: "O Allah, count them in number, kill them all, and do not leave any of them, and do not ever forgive them. Patience, O sons of my cousins, patience, O family of mine, you shall not see any humiliation after this day ever."
He said: Then Abdullah bin Al-Hasan (peace be upon him), whom we mentioned first, came out — and it is most accurate that he emerged after Al-Qasim — while saying:
(389)
If you deny me, I am the son of Haidar
A raging lion and a ferocious beast
Like a rushing, bitterly cold wind against the enemies, he killed fourteen men. Then Hani ibn Thabit al-Hadrami killed him, and his face turned black.
Abu al-Faraj said: It was mentioned by Abu Ja'far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) that Harmala bin Kahil al-Asadi killed him.
Then he said: "And Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), and his mother was an umm walad [a mother of a child, typically a slave woman who has borne a child], and according to the narration of Amr ibn Shamir, from Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), Uqbah al-Ghanawi was the one who killed him."
They said: A young boy came out, holding a pillar from those buildings, with two pearls in his ears, looking terrified. He kept glancing right and left, and his earrings were swaying. Hani ibn Thabit charged at him and killed him, and Shaherban looked at him, speechless, like someone in shock.
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) looked to his right and saw none of the men, and then he looked to his left and saw no one. At that moment, Ali bin Al-Hussein Zain Al-Abidin (peace be upon him) stepped out, though he was ill and unable to lift his sword. Umm Kulthum called out behind him: "O my son! Return." He replied: "O Aunt! Let me fight before the grandson of the Messenger of Allah." Hussein then said: "O Umm Kulthum! Take him back so that the earth is not left devoid of the progeny of Muhammad (peace be upon him)."
The Sixth Assembly, on the day of Ashura, the martyrdom of Abdullah the Infant (peace be upon him)

The women and children cried out: "Is there anyone to defend the sanctuary of the Messenger of God? Is there any monotheist who fears God concerning us? Is there anyone to help, hoping for God's reward in aiding us?" The voices of the women rose in lamentation. Then he (peace be upon him) approached the entrance of the tent and said, "Hand me my son Ali, the infant, so I may bid him farewell." They handed him the child.
Sheikh Al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said: He called for his son Abdullah. They reported that he was kissing him while saying: "Woe to these people when your grandfather, Muhammad Al-Mustafa, is their adversary." The child was in his lap when Harmala ibn Kahil Al-Asadi shot him with an arrow, slaughtering him in the lap of Hussein (peace be upon him). Hussein caught his blood until his hands were full, then he hurled it toward the sky.
The noble gentleman, may mercy be upon him, said: Then he said, "It is light upon me whatever befalls me, as it is in the sight of God." Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: "Not a single drop of that blood fell to the ground."
They said: Then he (peace be upon him) said: "Do not let it be less significant to you than the weaning of a child. O Allah, if You have withheld victory from us, then make it for what is better for us."
Abu al-Faraj said: Abdullah ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), whose mother was al-Rabab bint Imru’ al-Qais, reported: Muhammad ibn al-Hussein al-Ashnani narrated to me through his chain of transmission from those who witnessed al-Hussein (peace be upon him), saying: He had a young son with him, and an arrow came and struck his throat. Al-Hussein then began to wipe the blood from his throat and throw it toward the sky, where none of it would return, saying: "O Allah, may he not be of lesser importance to You than the young camel of Salih."
In some noble narrations, it is said that he (peace be upon him) stated: "O God, You are the witness against a people who killed the one most resembling your Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)." He (peace be upon him) also heard someone say: "Leave him, O Hussein, for he has a nursemaid in Paradise." Then he (peace be upon him) dismounted from his horse and dug a grave for him with the edge of his sword and buried him, covered in his blood.
