الذي تقول ؟ أفهمنا حتى نفهم.
He said: I say to you, fear Allah, your Lord, and do not kill me, for it is not permissible for you to kill me or violate my sanctity. Indeed, I am the son of the daughter of your Prophet, and my grandmother Khadijah was the wife of your Prophet. It might have reached you the saying of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the masters of the youth of Paradise.
فقال : أقول : اتقوا الله ربَّكم ولا تقتلوني ، فإنه لا يحلُّ لكم قتلي ، ولا انتهاك حرمتي ، فإنّي ابن بنت نبيِّكم ، وجدّتي خديجة زوجة نبيِّكم ، ولعلّه قد بلغكم قول نبيِّكم ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) : الحسن والحسين سيِّدا شباب أهل الجنة..
Sheikh Al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said: Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) called for his mount, rode it, and called out in a loud voice: "O people of Iraq—most of them were listening—he said: O people, listen to my words and do not be hasty until I admonish you with what is right for you upon me, and until I have justified myself to you. If you give me justice, you will be fortunate by doing so. If you do not grant me justice, then gather your thoughts, and let not your decision upon me be unclear. Then act decisively toward me and do not delay. Indeed, my ally is Allah, who sent down the Book, and He takes care of the righteous."
وقال الشيخ المفيد عليه الرحمة : ودعا الحسين ( عليه السلام ) براحلته فركبها ، ونادى بأعلى صوته : يا أهل العراق ـ وجلُّهم يسمعون ـ فقال : أيُّها الناس! اسمعوا قولي ولا تعجلوا حتى أعظكم بما يحقُّ لكم عليَّ ، وحتى أعذر عليكم ، فإن أعطيتموني النصف كنتم بذلك أسعد وإن لم تعطوني النصف من أنفسكم فاجمعوا رأيكم ، ثم لا يكن أمركم عليكم غمَّة ، ثم اقضوا إليَّ ولا تنظرون ، إن وليّي الله الذي نزَّل الكتاب وهو يتولَّى الصالحين.
He praised and thanked Allah, extolled Him with what He deserves, and sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his angels, and his prophets. There was no one heard before or after him more eloquent in speech.
ثمَّ حمد الله وأثنى عليه ، وذكر الله بما هو أهله ، وصلَّى على النبيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) وعلى ملائكته وعلى أنبيائه ، فلم يسمع متكلِّم قط قبله ولا بعده أبلغ منه في منطق.
Then he said: "After this, consider my lineage and look at who I am. Reflect on this and question yourself whether it is right for you to kill me and violate my dignity. Am I not the grandson of your Prophet, the son of his trustee and cousin, the first believer who affirmed the truth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and what he brought from his Lord? Is Hamza, the master of martyrs, not my uncle? Is Ja'far al-Tayyar, who is in paradise with two wings, not my uncle? Have you not heard what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about me and my brother: 'These are the leaders of the youths of paradise'? If you believe me, then what I say is true, and by God, I have never intentionally lied since I knew that Allah despises lies and liars. If you do not believe me, then among you are those who, if you ask them, will inform you. Ask Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Sahl bin Sa'd al-Saidi, Zayd bin Arqam, and Anas bin Malik—they will tell you that they heard this statement from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about me and my brother. Is this not enough to prevent you from shedding my blood?"
ثمَّ قال : أمَّا بعد ، فانسبوني فانظروا من أنا ، ثم راجعوا أنفسكم وعاتبوها فانظروا هل يصلح لكم قتلي وانتهاك حرمتي ؟ ألست ابن بنت نبيِّكم ، وابن وصيِّه وابن عمِّه وأول مؤمن مصدِّق لرسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بما جاء به من عند ربِّه ؟ أو ليس حمزة سيِّد الشهداء عمّي ؟ أو ليس جعفر الطيار في الجنّة بجناحين عمّي ؟ أو لم يبلغكم ما قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لي ولأخي : هذان سيِّدا شباب أهل الجنّة ؟ فإن صدَّقتموني بما أقول وهو الحق ، والله ما تعمَّدت كذباً مذ علمت أن الله يمقت عليه أهله ، وإن كذَّبتموني فإنّ فيكم مَنْ إنْ سألتموه عن ذلك أخبركم ، اسألوا جابر بن عبدالله الأنصاري ، وأبا سعيد الخدري ، وسهل بن سعد الساعدي ، وزيد بن أرقم ، وأنس بن مالك يخبروكم أنّهم سمعوا هذه المقالة من رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لي ولأخي ، أما في هذا حاجز لكم عن سفك دمي ؟

Al-Husayn said to Shamir ibn Dhi al-Jawshan: "He worships Allah on the edge, if he knows what you say." Habib ibn Muzahir replied: "By Allah, I see you worship Allah on seventy edges, and I bear witness that you are truthful, you do not know what he says. Allah has sealed your heart."
فقال له شمر بن ذي الجوشن : هو يعبد الله على حرف إن كان يدري ما تقول ، فقال له حبيب بن مظاهر : والله إنّي لأراك تعبد الله على سبعين حرفاً ، وأنا أشهد أنك صادق ما تدري ما يقول ، قد طبع الله على قلبك.
Then Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) said: "If you are in doubt about this, do you doubt that I am the son of the daughter of your Prophet? By Allah, there is no son of the daughter of a prophet other than me among you or among anyone else from the east to the west. Alas, do you seek to kill me for someone you have killed? Or for wealth you have consumed? Or for retaliation for an injury?"
ثمَّ قال لهم الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : فإن كنتم في شك من هذا أفتشكُّون أني ابن بنت نبيِّكم ؟ فوالله ما بين المشرق والمغرب ابن بنت نبيٍّ غيري فيكم ولا في غيركم ، ويحكم ، أتطلبوني بقتيل منكم قتلته ؟ أو مال لكم استهلكته ؟ أو بقصاص من جراحة ؟
They stopped speaking to him, so he called out: "O Shabath bin Rib'i! O Hajjar bin Abjar! O Qais bin Al-Ash'ath! O Yazid bin Al-Harith! Did you not write to me saying that the fruits have ripened, the pastures have turned green, and that I should come to an army prepared for me?" To this, Qais bin Al-Ash'ath replied, "We do not know what you are saying, but come down to the judgment of your cousins, for they will not show you anything but what you love."
Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) said to them, "No, by Allah, I will not surrender to you like one who is humiliated, nor will I acknowledge you as a slave would."
فأخذوا لا يكلِّمونه ، فنادى : يا شبث بن ربعي! يا حجّار بن أبجر! يا قيس بن الأشعث! يا يزيد بن الحارث! ألم تكتبوا إليَّ أن قد أينعت الثمار ، واخضرَّ الجناب ، وإنّما تقدم على جند لك مجنَّد ؟ فقال له قيس بن الأشعث : ما ندري ما تقول ، ولكن انزل على حكم بني عمِّك ، فإنّهم لن يروك إلاَّ ما تحب ، فقال لهم الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : لا والله لا أعطيكم بيدي إعطاء الذليل ، ولا أقرُّ لكم إقرار العبيد.
Then he called out: "O servants of Allah! I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord from you stoning me, and I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant person who does not believe in the Day of Judgment."
ثمَّ نادى : يا عباد الله! إنّي عذت بربّي وربِّكم أن تُرجمون ، وأعوذ بربّي وربِّكم من كل متكبِّر لا يؤمن بيوم الحساب.
Then he stopped his mount, ordered Uqba ibn Saman to tether it, and they advanced toward him.
ثم إنَّه أناخ راحلته ، وأمر عقبة بن سمعان بعقلها ، وأقبلوا يزحفون نحوه (1) .
In the book of virtues, it is narrated through his chain from Abdullah who said: When Umar bin Saad organized his troops to fight against Hussain bin Ali (peace be upon him), he arranged them in their positions and placed the banners in their locations, organizing the men on the right and the left wings. He then said to the men in the center: Hold your ground and surround Hussain from all sides until they encircled him completely. Hussain (peace be upon him) then emerged and approached the people, seeking their attention, but they refused to listen. He said to them: Woe unto you, why won't you listen to me so you can hear what I have to say? I am merely inviting you to the path of guidance. Whoever obeys me will be among the guided, and whoever disobeys me will be...
وفي المناقب روى بإسناده عن عبدالله قال : لما عبَّأ عمر بن سعد أصحابه لمحاربة الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) ، ورتَّبهم مراتبهم ، وأقام الرايات في مواضعها ، وعبَّأ أصحاب الميمنة والميسرة ، فقال لأصحاب القلب : اثبتوا ، وأحاطوا بالحسين من كل جانب حتى جعلوه في مثل الحلقة ، فخرج ( عليه السلام ) حتى أتى الناس ، فاستنصتهم فأبوا أن ينصتوا ، حتى قال لهم : ويلكم ، ما عليكم أن تنصتوا إليَّ فتسمعوا قولي ؟ وإنّما أدعوكم إلى سبيل الرشاد ، فمن أطاعني كان من المرشدين ، ومن عصاني كان

O people consumed by desires, you have disobeyed my command and not listened to my words. Your bellies are filled with forbidden things, and your hearts have been sealed. Woe to you, will you not listen? Will you not hear? Omar bin Saad's companions argued among themselves and said, "Listen to him."
من المهلكين ، وكلّكم عاص لأمري ، غير مستمع قولي ، فقد مُلئت بطونكم من الحرام ، وطُبع على قلوبكم ، ويلكم ، ألا تنصتون ؟ ألا تسمعون ؟ فتلاوم أصحاب عمر بن سعد بينهم وقالوا : أنصتوا له.
Then Hussain (peace be upon him) stood and said: "Woe to you, O community, and may you be miserable! When you called us for help bewildered and confused, we rushed to you, ready and responding, but you brandished your swords against us and incited the flames of strife upon us, flames kindled by your enemy and ours. You became a rallying force against your allies and a hand against them for your enemies without justice to show nor hope to be invoked. All you longed for was the forbidden gains of this worldly life and despicable living that you aspired for, without any incident from us or vision you had. So why, woe to you, did you not remember us and abandon us to prepare while the sword was unsheathed, the turmoil was raging, and the insight had not become clear? But you rushed towards us like the swarm of flies, and collectively, like moths to a flame. How despicable you are! You are nothing but tyrants of the nation, renegades of the parties, rejecters of the Book, the whispers of the devil, the alliance of sins, distorters of the scripture, extinguishers of the traditions, murderers of the children of the prophets, destroyers of the progeny of the heirs, those who disgrace the lineage, harass the believers, and shout mockery by the leaders who divided the Quran into pieces."
فقام الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ثمَّ قال : تبّاً لكم أيَّتُها الجماعة وترحاً ، أفحين استصرختمونا ولهين متحيِّرين فأصرختكم مؤدين مستعدين ، سللتم علينا سيفاً في رقابنا ، وحششتم علينا نار الفتن خباها عدوُّكم وعدوُّنا ، فأصبحتم إلباً على أوليائكم ، ويداً عليهم لأعدائكم ، بغير عدل أفشوه فيكم ، ولا أمل أصبح لكم فيهم ، إلاَّ الحرام من الدنيا أنالوكم ، وخسيس عيش طمعتم فيه ، من غير حدث كان منّا ، ولا رأي تفيل لنا ، فهلاّ ـ لكم الويلات ـ إذ كرهتمونا وتركتمونا تجهَّزتموها والسيف لم يشهر ، والجاش طامن ، والرأي لم يستحصف ، ولكن أسرعتم علينا كطيرة الذباب ، وتداعيتم كتداعي الفراش ، فقبحاً لكم ، فإنّما أنتم من طواغيت الأمّة ، وشذّاذ الأحزاب ، ونبذة الكتاب ، ونفثة الشيطان ، وعصبة الآثام ، ومحرِّفي الكتاب ، ومطفيء السنن ، وقتلة أولاد الأنبياء ، ومبيري عترة الأوصياء ، وملحقي العهار بالنسب ، ومؤذي المؤمنين ، وصراخ أئمّة المستهزئين ، الذين جعلوا القرآن عضين.
You rely on war and its followers, while you forsake us. By God, desertion is known among you, your roots have been nurtured with it, your lineage has inherited it, it has been deeply set in your hearts, and your chests are shrouded with it. You have been the most malevolent creation, like plants grown on hostility, and a meal for the usurper. Be aware of the curse of God upon those who break their oaths after confirming them, and you have made God your witness. By God, you are those people.
وأنتم ابن حرب وأشياعه تعتمدون ، وإيّانا تخاذلون ، أجل والله ، الخذل فيكم معروف ، وشجت عليه عروقكم ، وتوارثته أصولكم وفروعكم ، وثبتت عليه قلوبكم ، وغشيت صدوركم ، فكنتم أخبث شيء سنخاً للناصب ، وأكلة للغاصب ، ألا لعنة الله على الناكثين الذين ينقضون الأيمان بعد توكيدها ، وقد جعلتم الله عليكم كفيلا ، فأنتم والله هُم.
Indeed, the son of a disgraceful man has placed me between two choices: between fighting and humiliation. But far be it for us to accept disgrace. God, His Messenger, pure ancestors, and pure wombs refuse that for us.
ألا إنّ الدعيَّ ابن الدعيِّ قد ركز بين اثنتين ، بين القتلة والذلّة ، وهيهات ما آخذ الدنيّة ، أبى الله ذلك ورسوله ، وجدود طابت ، وحجور طهرت ، وأنوف

A courageous determination and noble spirits do not favor the destinies of the ignoble over those of the honorable. Behold, I have given fair warning and timely notice. Indeed, I am advancing with this family, despite the scarcity of supplies and the abandonment of allies.
حميّة ، ونفوس أبيّة لا تؤثر مصارع اللئام على مصارع الكرام ، ألا قد أعذرت وأنذرت ، ألا إنّي زاحف بهذه الأسرة ، على قلّة العتاد ، وخذلة الأصحاب.
Then he began to say:
ثم أنشأ يقول :
If we are defeated, we advance confidently
And if we are victorious, we are not vanquished
Our retreat is not cowardice, but
Our deaths and the fate of other nations
فَإِنْ نَهْزَمْ فهزَّامون قِدْماً
وَإِنْ نُهْزَمْ فغيرُ مُهَزَّمينا
وَمَا إِنْ طِبُّنا جُبُنٌ ولكنْ
مَنَايَانا وَدَوْلَةُ آخرينا
And it is further mentioned in "Al-Malhoof":
وزاد بعدهما في الملهوف :
When death raises its jaws from people
Know that it is now aiming for others
It wipes out the nobility of my people
Just as it destroyed the ancient generations
If kings were to be immortal, then we would be
And if the noble were to remain, we would too
So tell those who gloat over us to awaken
For the gloaters will meet what we have met
إِذَا ما الموتُ رَفَّعَ عن أُناس
كَلاَكِلَهُ أَنَاخ بآخرينا
فأفنى ذالكم سَرَوَاتِ قومي
كَمَا أفنى القُرُونَ الأوَّلينا
فلو خَلُدَ الملوكُ إذاً خَلُدْنا
ولو بقي الكِرَامُ إذاً بقينا
فَقُلْ للشامتين بِنَا أَفيقوا
سَيَلقى الشامتون كَمَا لَقِينا
Alas! You shall not remain after that except for a short while, like the time it takes for a horse to be mounted, until the millstone completes its rotation. This was a covenant entrusted to me by my grandfather. Assemble your plans and your partners, and then come at me all together without delay. I have relied upon God, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature except that He holds it by its forelock. Truly, my Lord is on a straight path.
O God, withhold from them the rain from the sky, and send upon them years like the years of Joseph, and unleash upon them the young man of Thaqif who will make them drink from a bitter cup, and he will not leave among them anyone whom he does not kill, one by one, stroke for stroke. He will take vengeance for me, for my allies, for my household, and for my followers from them, for they have deceived us, denied us, and abandoned us. And You are our Lord; upon You we have relied, to You we have turned, and to You is the final return.
ألا! ثم لا تلبثون بعدها إلاَّ كريث ما يركب الفرس ، حتى تدور بكم الرحى ، عهد عهده إليَّ أبي عن جدّي ، فأجمعوا أمركم وشركاءكم ، ثم كيدوني جميعاً فلا تنظرون ، إنّي توكلت على الله ربّي وربّكم ، ما من دابّة إلاَّ هو آخذ بناصيتها ، إن ربّي على صراط مستقيم ، اللهم احبس عنهم قطر السماء ، وابعث عليهم سنين كسنِّي يوسف ، وسلَّط عليهم غلام ثقيف يسقيهم كأساً مصبرة ، ولا يدع فيهم أحداً إلاَّ قتله قتلة بقتلة ، وضربة بضربة ، ينتقم لي ولأوليائي وأهل بيتي وأشياعي منهم ، فإنّهم غرُّونا وكذَّبونا وخذلونا ، وأنت ربُّنا ، عليك توكَّلنا ، وإليك أنبنا ، وإليك المصير.
Then he said, "Where is Umar ibn Saad? Call Umar for me!" So they called him, though he was reluctant and did not wish to go to him. He said, "O Umar! Would you kill me? You claim that the da'i, the son of a da'i, will make you the ruler of the lands of Ray and Jorjan. By God, you will never find comfort in that, not now nor later. Do as you wish, for you will never find joy in this world or the hereafter after me. It is as if I can see your head on a reed placed in Kufa, being tossed about."
ثمَّ قال : أين عمر بن سعد ؟ ادعوا لي عمر! فدعي له ، وكان كارهاً لا يحبُّ أن يأتيه ، فقال : يا عمر! أنت تقتلني ؟ تزعم أن يولِّيك الدعيُّ ابن الدعيِّ بلاد الريِّ وجرجان ، والله لا تتهنَّأ بذلك أبداً ، عهداً ومعهوداً ، فاصنع ما أنت صانع ، فإنّك لا تفرح بعدي بدنيا ولا آخرة ، ولكأنّي برأسك على قصبة قد نُصب بالكوفة ، يتراماه

The boys use him as a target among themselves.
الصبيان ويتخذونه غرضاً بينهم.
Omar became angry at his words, then turned his face away from him and called out to his companions, "What are you waiting for? Attack together, it is just one meal."
فاغتاظ عمر من كلامه ، ثمَّ صرف بوجهه عنه ، ونادى بأصحابه : ما تنتظرون به ؟ احملوا بأجمعكم ، إنّما هي أكلة واحدة.
Then, Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) called for the Persian horse of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), mounted it, and arranged his companions.
ثم إن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) دعا بفرس رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) المرتجز فركبه ، وعبَّأ أصحابه (1) .
The hearts have hardened and did not incline to guidance
Curses upon those hearts that are hardened
He did not taste the sweetness of its freshwater until he perished
Thirsty, and he was washed in crimson blood
قَسَتِ القُلُوبُ فَلَمْ تَمِلْ لهداية
تبّاً لهاتيك القُلُوبِ القاسيه
مَا ذَاقَ طَعْمَ فُرَاتِهِمْ حَتَّى قَضَى
عَطَشَاً وَغُسِّلَ بالدِّمَاءِ القَانِيه
The Third Assembly, from the Day of Ashura: The Martyrdom of the Supporters (Peace be upon them)
Sheikh Al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said: When Al-Hurr bin Yazid saw that the people were resolutely determined to fight Al-Husayn (peace be upon him), he said to Umar bin Sa'd: "O Umar! Are you really going to fight this man?" Umar replied: "Yes, by God, a severe battle, the lightest part of which would be heads falling and hands flying." Al-Hurr then asked: "Are you not content with what he has offered you?"
قال الشيخ المفيد عليه الرحمة : فلمَّا رأى الحرُّ بن يزيد أن القوم قد صمَّموا على قتال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) قال لعمر بن سعد : أي عمر! أمقاتل أنت هذا الرجل ؟ قال : إي والله ، قتالا شديداً أيسره أن تسقط الرؤوس ، وتطيح الأيدي ، قال : أفما لكم فيما عرضه علكيم رضى ؟
Umar said: "If the matter were up to me, I would have acted, but your leader has refused." So al-Hurr approached and stood before the people, accompanied by a man from his tribe named Qura bin Qais. He asked him, "O Qura, have you watered your horse today?" Qura replied, "No." Al-Hurr then asked, "What do you want to water it with?" Qura said, "By God, I thought he meant for me to step aside and not witness the battle, and he was reluctant to let me see him doing so. So I told him, 'I have not watered it, and I am going to water it now.' I left the spot where I was. By God, had he revealed his true intention to me, I would have gone out with him to al-Husayn."
قال عمر : أما لو كان الأمر إليَّ لفعلت ، ولكنَّ أميرك قد أبى ، فأقبل الحرُّ حتى وقف من الناس موقفاً ، ومعه رجل من قومه يقال له قرّة بن قيس ، فقال له : يا قرّة! هل سقيت فرسك اليوم ؟ قال : لا ، قال : فما تريد أن تسقيه ؟ قال قرَّة : فظننت ـ والله ـ أنّه يريد أن يتنحَّى ولا يشهد القتال ، فكره أن أراه حين يصنع ذلك ، فقلت له : لم أسقه وأنا منطلق فأسقيه ، فاعتزل ذلك المكان الذي كان فيه ، فوالله لو أنه أطلعني على الذي يريد لخرجت معه إلى الحسين.

He took step after step towards Al-Husayn slowly, when Al-Muhajir bin Aws asked him, "What do you want, O son of Yazid? Do you intend to attack?" He did not answer, but he was seized with trembling, like quivering. Al-Muhajir said to him, "Your matter is suspicious. By God, I have never seen anything like this from you in any situation before, and if I were asked to name the bravest of the people of Kufa, I would not have overlooked you. So what is this that I see from you?" Al-Hurr replied, "By God, I am choosing between paradise and the fire; and by God, nothing can I choose over paradise, even if I were to be cut into pieces and burned."
فأخذ يدنو من الحسين قليلا قليلا ، فقال له مهاجر بن أوس : ما تريد يا ابن يزيد ؟ أتريد أن تحمل ؟ فلم يجبه ، فأخذه مثل الأفكل وهي الرعدة ، فقال له المهاجر : إن أمرك لمريب ، والله ما رأيت منك في موقف قط مثل هذا ، ولو قيل لي ، من أشجع أهل الكوفة ؟ لما عدوتك ، فما هذا الذي أرى منك ؟ فقال له الحر : إني والله اُخيِّر نفسي بين الجنّة والنار ، فوالله لا أختار على الجنّة شيئاً ولو قُطِّعت وأُحرقت.
Then he spurred his horse and caught up with Hussein (peace be upon him) and said, "May I be your ransom, O son of the Messenger of Allah. I am your companion who prevented you from returning, accompanied you on the road, and restricted you to this place. I did not think that the people would reject what you offered them or treat you in this way. By Allah, if I knew they would do this to you, I would not have acted as I did. I am repentant to Allah for what I did. Do you see any chance of repentance for me?" Hussein (peace be upon him) replied, "Yes, Allah accepts your repentance. Come down." He said, "I have a horse better for fighting than I am. I will fight them on my horse for a while, and when the end of my affair comes, I will dismount." Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him, "Do as you see fit—may Allah have mercy on you."
ثمَّ ضرب فرسه فلحق الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فقال له : جعلت فداك يا ابن رسول الله ، أنا صاحبك الذي حبستك عن الرجوع ، وسايرتك في الطريق ، وجعجعت بك في هذا المكان ، وما ظننت أن القوم يردُّون عليك ما عرضته عليهم ، ولا يبلغون منك هذه المنزلة ، والله لو علمت أنهم ينتهون بك إلى ما أرى ما ركبت مثل الذي ركبت ، وأنا تائب إلى الله مما صنعت ، فترى لي من ذلك توبة ؟ فقال له الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : نعم ، يتوب الله عليك فانزل ، فقال : أنا لك فارساً خير منّي راجلا ، أقاتلهم على فرسي ساعة ، وإلى النزول ما يصير آخر أمري ، فقال له الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فاصنع ـ يرحمك الله ـ ما بدا لك.
When Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) advanced, he said: "O people of Kufa, what a miserable state you are in! You invited this righteous servant until he came to you, then you turned against him. You claimed you were ready to fight for him with your souls, then you deceived and abandoned him, conspiring to kill him. You detained him, holding him with chains, and surrounded him from all sides, preventing him from moving freely to the vast lands of God. He became like a prisoner in your hands, unable to benefit himself or ward off harm.
You prevented him and his women, children, and family from the flowing waters of the Euphrates, which Jews, Christians, and Magians, as well as the pigs and dogs of the black land, drink from and roll in. Now they are perishing from thirst. It is indeed a disgrace how you have treated Muhammad’s descendants—may God not quench your thirst on the Day of Judgment."
فاستقدم أمام الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فقال : يا أهل الكوفة لامِّكم الهبل والعبر ، أدعوتم هذا العبد الصالح حتى إذا أتاكم أسلمتموه ؟ وزعمتم أنكم قاتلو أنفسكم دونه ثم عدوتم عليه لتقتلوه ؟ أمسكتم بنفسه ، وأخذتم بكلكله ، وأحطتم به من كل جانب لتمنعوه التوجُّه إلى بلاد الله العريضة ، فصار كالأسير في أيديكم ، لا يملك لنفسه نفعاً ، ولا يدفع عنها ضرّاً ، وحلأتموه ونساءه وصبيته وأهله عن ماء الفرات الجاري ، تشربه اليهود والنصارى والمجوس ، وتمرغ فيه خنازير السواد وكلابهم ، وهاهم قد صرعهم العطش ، بئسما خلفتم محمداً في ذرّيّته ، لاسقاكم الله يوم الظمأ.
Men charged at him, hurling arrows, yet he continued moving forward until he stood in front of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him).
فحمل عليه رجال يرمونه بالنبل ، فأقبل حتى وقف أمام الحسين ( عليه السلام )

Umar bin Sa'd called out: "O Duraid! Bring your banner closer," so he brought it closer. Then he placed an arrow on the string of his bow, drew it, and said: "Bear witness that I am the first to shoot," after which the people began shooting.
ونادى عمر بن سعد : يا دريد! أدنِ رايتك ، فأدناها ، ثم وضع سهماً في كبد قوسه ثم رمى وقال : اشهدوا أني أول من رمى ، ثم رمى الناس (1) .
Muhammad bin Abi Talib said: All his companions threw, and none of Husayn's (peace be upon him) companions were left without being hit by their arrows.
وقال محمد بن أبي طالب : فرمى أصحابه كلُّهم ، فما بقي من أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) أحد إلاَّ أصابه من سهامهم.
It is said that when they launched this attack, the companions of Husayn (peace be upon him) dwindled, and fifty men were killed in this assault. Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may Allah have mercy on him, recounted that Husayn (peace be upon him) said to his companions: "Stand up—may Allah have mercy upon you—towards the inevitable death, for these arrows are the messengers of the people to you." They fought for an hour of the day, charge after charge, until a group of Husayn’s companions were killed.
It was then that Husayn (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his beard and began to say: "God's wrath intensified against the Jews for saying He has a son, His wrath intensified against the Christians for considering Him one of three, His wrath intensified against the Magi for worshipping the sun and the moon instead of Him, and His wrath intensified against a people who united their word to kill the son of their Prophet’s daughter. By God, I will not answer them to anything they desire until I meet Allah, the Almighty, while I am stained with my blood."
قيل : فلمَّا رموهم هذه الرمية قلَّ أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وقُتل في هذه الحملة خمسون رجلا ، وقال السيد ابن طاووس عليه الرحمة : فقال ( عليه السلام ) لأصحابه : قوموا ـ رحمكم الله ـ إلى الموت الذي لابدَّ منه ، فإنّ هذه السهام رسل القوم إليكم ، فاقتتلوا ساعة من النهار حملة وحملة ، حتى قتل من أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) جماعة ، قال : فعندها ضرب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) يده على لحيته ، وجعل يقول : اشتدَّ غضب الله على اليهود إذ جعلوا له ولداً ، واشتدَّ غضبه على النصارى إذ جعلوه ثالث ثلاثة ، واشتدَّ غضبه على المجوس إذ عبدوا الشمس والقمر دونه ، واشتدَّ غضبه على قوم اتّفقت كلمتهم على قتل ابن بنت نبيِّهم ، أما والله لا أجيبهم إلى شيء مما يريدون حتى ألقى الله تعالى وأنا مخضَّب بدمي.
It is narrated from our Master Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: I heard my father (peace be upon him) say: When Hussein (peace be upon him) and Umar ibn Sa'ad (may God curse him) met and the battle commenced, divine support was sent down until it hovered over Hussein's head (peace be upon him). Then he was given the choice between victory over his enemies and meeting Allah Almighty. He chose to meet Allah Almighty. The narrator said: Then he (peace be upon him) called out: Is there anyone to help us for the sake of Allah? Is there anyone to defend the sanctity of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family)?
وروي عن مولانا الصادق ( عليه السلام ) أنه قال : سمعت أبي ( عليه السلام ) يقول : لمَّا التقى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وعمر بن سعد لعنه الله وقامت الحرب ، أُنزل النصر حتى رفرف على رأس الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، ثم خُيِّر بين النصر على أعدائه وبين لقاء الله تعالى ، فاختار لقاء الله تعالى ، قال الراوي : ثمَّ صاح ( عليه السلام ) : أما من مغيث يغيثنا لوجه الله ، أما من ذابٍّ يذبُّ عن حُرم رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) (2) .
Sheikh Al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said: Amr ibn al-Hajjaj attacked the right wing of Al-Hussein's (peace be upon him) companions with those who were with him from the people of Kufa. When he approached Al-Hussein (peace be upon him), he knelt down before him.
قال الشيخ المفيد عليه الرحمة : وحمل عمرو بن الحجاج على ميمنة أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فيمن كان معه من أهل الكوفة ، فلمَّا دنا من الحسين ( عليه السلام ) جثوا له على

The riders charged, raising their spears towards them, but their cavalry could not advance against the spears. The horses began to retreat, and the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him) shot arrows at them, causing some of them to fall and injuring others.
الركب ، وأشرعوا الرماح نحوهم ، فلم تقدم خيلهم على الرماح ، فذهبت الخيل لترجع ، فرشقهم أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) بالنبل ، فصرعوا منهم رجالا ، وجرحوا منهم آخرين.
A man from the tribe of Banu Tamim named Abdullah ibn Hawza approached the camp of Hussein (peace be upon him). The people around him called out, "Where are you heading, may your mother lose you?" He replied, "I am advancing towards a merciful and obedient Lord." Hussein (peace be upon him) then asked those around him, "Who is this?" It was said to him, "This is Ibn Hawza al-Tamimi." Hussein (peace be upon him) then prayed, "O Allah, propel him into the fire." His horse stumbled in a ditch, causing him to fall and his left leg to become entangled in the stirrup while the right leg rose up. Muslim ibn Awsaja charged at him and struck his right leg, causing it to fly away. As his horse galloped off, it struck his head against stones and trees until he died, and Allah hastened his soul to the fire. Then, the battle commenced, and from both sides, a group was killed.
وجاء رجل من بني تميم يقال له عبدالله بن حوزة ، فأقدم على عسكر الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فناداه القوم : إلى أين ثكلتك أمُّك ؟ فقال : إنّي أقدم على ربٍّ رحيم وشفيع مطاع ، فقال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) لأصحابه : من هذا ؟ فقيل له : هذا ابن حوزة التميمي ، فقال : اللهم حُزْه إلى النار ، فاضطرب به فرسه في جدول فوقع ، وتعلَّقت رجله اليسرى في الركاب ، وارتفعت اليمنى ، وشدَّ عليه مسلم بن عوسجة فضرب رجله اليمنى فأطارها وعدا به فرسه فضرب برأسه كل حجر وكل شجر حتى مات ، وعجَّل الله بروحه إلى النار ، ونشب القتال فقتل من الجميع جماعة (1) .
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and the author of "Manaqib," as well as Ibn al-Athir in "Al-Kamil" — whose narratives are similar — recounted that Al-Hurr came to Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) and said: "O son of the Messenger of Allah! I was the first to confront you, so permit me to be the first to be killed in your presence, and the first to shake hands with your grandfather tomorrow." Al-Hurr meant by "to be the first to be killed in your presence" that he would be the first among the duelists to be killed. Otherwise, it is known that some people had already been killed in the initial charge, as mentioned. Thus, he was the first to advance towards the enemy for combat, and he recited:
وقال محمد بن أبي طالب وصاحب المناقب وابن الأثير في الكامل ـ ورواياتهم متقاربة ـ إن الحرّ أتى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فقال : يا ابن رسول الله! كنت أول خارج عليك فائذن لي لأكون أول قتيل بين يديك ، وأول من يصافح جدَّك غداً ، وإنّما قال الحر : لأكون أول قتيل بين يديك ، والمعنى : يكون أول قتيل من المبارزين ، وإلاَّ فإنَّ جماعة كانوا قد قتلوا في الحملة الأولى كما ذكر ، فكان أول من تقدَّم إلى براز القوم ، وجعل ينشد ويقول :
Indeed, I am the free one and a refuge for the guest
I strike at your necks with the sword
For the sake of the best who settled in the land of Khayf
I strike you and see no injustice
إنّي أنا الحرُّ ومأوى الضيفِ
أضربُ في أعناقِكم بالسيفِ
عن خيرِ مَنْ حلَّ بأرضِ الخَيْفِ
أضربُكم ولا أرى من حَيْفِ
It is narrated that Al-Hurr killed forty horsemen and foot soldiers, and then he did not stop fighting until he was martyred, may Allah have mercy on him. The companions of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) carried him and placed him in front of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) by his tent. وَروي أن الحرَّ قتل أربعين فارساً وراجلا ، ثمَّ لم يزل يقاتل حتى قُتل رحمه الله ، فاحتمله أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) حتى وضعوه بين يدي الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وبه رمق ، فجعل الحسين يمسح وجهه ، ويقول : أنت الحرُّ كما سمَّتك أمُّك ، وأنت الحرُّ في

The world, and you are the free one in the hereafter, was recited by a man from the companions of Husayn (peace be upon him), and it is said: rather, it was recited by Ali ibn Husayn (peace be upon them).
الدنيا ، وأنت الحرُّ في الآخرة ، ورثاه رجل من أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، وقيل : بل رثاه علي بن الحسين ( عليهما السلام )
What a noble man, the noble son of Riyah
Patient when faced with the clash of spears
And what a noble man when Hussain called him,
He sacrificed himself amidst the cries
O my Lord, grant him a place in paradise,
And wed him with the beautiful maidens
لَنِعْمَ الحرُّ حُرُّ بني رِياحِ
صبورٌ عند مُخْتَلَفِ الرِّمَاحِ
وَنِعْمَ الحرُّ إِذْ نادى حسيناً
فجاد بنفسِهِ عند الصِّيَاحِ
فَيَا رَبِّي أَضِفْهُ في جِنَان
وَزَوِّجْهُ مع الحورِ المِلاَحِ
Ibn Shahr Ashub said, "He killed more than forty men among them." Ibn Numa narrated, with his chain of transmission, that he said to Al-Hussein (peace be upon him): When Ubaydullah dispatched me to you, I departed from the palace and heard a voice from behind me saying, 'Rejoice, O Hur! You have good news.' I turned around but saw no one. I thought to myself, 'By God, this is not good news, especially as I am heading towards Al-Hussein, and I have not resolved in my heart to follow you.' Then Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said: 'You have indeed earned a reward and goodness.'"
وقال ابن شهر آشوب : قتل نيّفاً وأربعين رجلا منهم ، وقال ابن نما : ورويت بإسنادي أنه قال للحسين ( عليه السلام ) : لمَّا وجَّهني عبيد الله إليك خرجت من القصر فنوديت من خلفي : أبشر ـ يا حرُّ! ـ بخير ، فالتفتُّ فلم أر أحداً ، فقلت : والله ما هذه بشارة وأنا أسير إلى الحسين ، وما أحدِّث نفسي باتّباعك ، فقال ( عليه السلام ) : لقد أصبت أجراً وخيراً (1) .
Then they said: Everyone who wanted to leave bid farewell to Hussain (peace be upon him) and said, "Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah!" He would reply, "And peace be upon you; we will follow you." Then he recited: "Among them are those who fulfilled their vow, and among them are those who are still waiting, and they did not change their determination in the least."
ثمَّ قالوا : وكان كل من أراد الخروج ودَّع الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وقال : السلام عليك يا ابن رسول الله! فيجيبه : وعليك السلام ، ونحن خلفك ، ويقرأ ( عليه السلام ) : « فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ قَضَى نَحْبَهُ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ وَمَا بَدَّلُوا تَبْدِيلا ».
Thumbar ibn Khudhayr al-Hamdani after al-Hoor, was one of the righteous servants of Allah, and he stepped forth saying:
ثم برز برير بن خضير الهمداني بعد الحُر ، وكان من عباد الله الصالحين ، فبرز وهو يقول :
I am Burair and my father is Khudair,
A lion that frightens the beasts at the roar.
People of goodness recognize goodness among us,
I strike you and see no harm in it.
أَنَا بُرَيرٌ وأبي خُضَيْر
ليثٌ يروعُ الأُسْدَ عند الزَّئْرِ
يَعْرِفُ فينا الخيرَ أهلُ الخيرِ
أضربُكُمْ وَلاَ أَرى من ضَيْرِ
Likewise, for those who do good, like Burayr. When Burayr mounted on the people, he was saying: "Come close to me, you killers of believers! Come close to me, you killers of the children of Badr! Come close to me, you killers of the children of the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and his remaining progeny!" Burayr was the most learned reader of his time, and he did not cease to fight until he had killed thirty men.
كذاك فِعْلُ الخيرِ من بُرَيْرِ
وجعل يحمل على القوم وهو يقول : اقتربوا منّي يا قتلة المؤمنين! اقتربوا منّي يا قتلة أولاد البدريّين! اقتربوا منّي يا قتلة أولاد رسول ربِّ العالمين وذرّيّته الباقين! وكان برير أقرأ أهل زمانه ، فلم يزل يقاتل حتى قتل ثلاثين رجلا.

He said: A man from Ibn Ziyad's followers attacked and killed Burayr, may God have mercy on him, and it was said that his killer was Bahir bin Aws al-Dhibi. Later, it was mentioned to him that Burayr was one of God's righteous servants, and a cousin came to him and said: "Woe to you, O Bahir! You killed Burayr bin Khudayr. With what face will you meet your Lord tomorrow?" The wretched one regretted, may God curse him.
قال : فحمل رجل من أصحاب ابن زياد فقتل بريراً رحمه الله ، وكان يقال لقاتله : بحير بن أوس الضّبي. قال : ثمَّ ذكر له بعد ذلك أن بريراً كان من عباد الله الصالحين ، وجاءه ابن عمٍّ له وقال : ويحك يا بحير! قتلت برير بن خضير ، فبأيِّ وجه تلقى ربَّك غداً ؟ قال : فندم الشقيُّ لعنه الله.
Then Wahb bin Abdullah bin Habbab al-Kalbi appeared, and his mother was with him that day. She said, "Arise, my son, and support the son of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." He replied, "For sure, my mother, I will not fall short." He then stepped forward and said:
ثمَّ برز من بعده وهب بن عبدالله بن حباب الكلبي ، وقد كانت معه أمُّه يومئذ ، فقالت : قم يا بنيَّ فانصر ابن بنت رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) ، فقال : أفعل يا أمّاه ولا أقصِّر ، فبرز وهو يقول :
If you deny me, I am the son of the kin.
You will see me, and you will see my strike.
And my charge and my prowess in war,
I will avenge the wrong after the vengeance of my company.
And I will dispel distress before the distress,
For my striving in the battle is not in play.
إِنْ تُنْكِرُوني فأنا ابنُ الكلبي
سوف تَرَوْني وَتَرَونَ ضَرْبي
وَحَمْلَتي وَصَوْلَتي في الْحَرْبِ
أُدْرِكُ ثَأْري بَعْدَ ثَأْرِ صَحْبي
وَأَدْفَعُ الكَرْبَ أمام الْكَرْبِ
ليس جِهَادِي في الوغى باللعبِ
Then Hammam ibn Al-Mazlaq fought until he killed a group of them. He returned to his mother and wife, stood before them, and said, "Mother, are you satisfied?" She replied, "I will not be satisfied until you are killed in front of al-Husayn (peace be upon him)." His wife said, "By Allah, do not cause me grief by sacrificing yourself!" His mother said, "My son, do not heed her words. Return and fight before the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), so that tomorrow on the Day of Judgment he might intercede for you before Allah."
He returned to fight until he had killed nineteen horsemen and twelve foot soldiers, then his hands were severed. His wife took a staff and approached him, saying, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, fight to defend the purified ones, the family of the Messenger of Allah." He came forward to return her to the women, but she took hold of his clothes and said, "I will not return, whether I live or die with you." Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said, "Let him fight until he is killed." May Allah's pleasure be upon him.
ثمَّ حمل فلم يزل يقاتل حتى قتل منهم جماعة ، فرجع إلى أمِّه وامرأته ، فوقف عليهما فقال : يا أمَّاه! أرضيت ؟ فقالت : ما رضيت أو تقتل بين يدي الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فقالت امرأته : بالله لا تفجعني في نفسك! فقالت أمُّه : يا بنيَّ! لا تقبل قولها وارجع فقاتل بين يدي ابن رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) ، فيكون غداً في القيامة شفيعاً لك بين يدي الله ، فرجع فلم يزل يقاتل حتى قتل تسعة عشر فارساً واثني عشر راجلا ، ثمَّ قُطعت يداه ، فأخذت امرأته عموداً وأقبلت نحوه وهي تقول : فداك أبي وأمّي ، قاتل دون الطيّبين حرم رسول الله ، فأقبل كي يردَّها إلى النساء ، فأخذت بجانب ثوبه وقالت : لن أعود أو أموت معك ، فقال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : وجعل يقاتل حتى قتل رضوان الله عليه.
He said: So his wife went to wipe the blood from his face, and Shamir saw her. He ordered a servant of his to strike her with a staff he had, crushing her and killing her. She was the first woman to be killed in al-Husayn's (peace be upon him) camp.
قال : فذهبت امرأته تمسح الدم عن وجهه ، فبصر بها شمر ، فأمر غلاماً له فضربها بعمود كان معه فشدخها وقتلها ، وهي أول امرأة قتلت في عسكر الحسين ( عليه السلام ).

I saw a narration that indicated there was a Christian who, along with his mother, converted to Islam at the hands of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). In battle, he killed twenty-four men and twelve horsemen before being captured. He was taken to Umar ibn Saad, who remarked on his fierce assault, and then ordered his execution by beheading. His head was thrown to the camp of Hussein (peace be upon him). His mother took the head, kissed it, and hurled it back towards the camp of ibn Saad, striking a soldier and killing him. She then charged with a tent pole and killed two men.
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) said to her, "Return, O mother of Wahb, you and your son are with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), for jihad is not obligatory for women." She returned while saying, "O Lord, do not sever my hope," to which Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) replied, "May God not sever your hope, O mother of Wahb."
ورأيت حديثاً أن وهب هذا كان نصرانياً فأسلم هو وأمُّه على يدي الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فقتل في المبارزة أربعة وعشرين راجلا واثني عشر فارساً ، ثم أُخذ أسيراً ، فأُتي به عمر بن سعد فقال : ما أشدَّ صولتك! ثمَّ أمر فضُربت عنُقه ، ورمي برأسه إلى عسكر الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فأخذت أمُّه الرأس فقبَّلته ، ثم رمت بالرأس إلى عسكر ابن سعد فأصابت به رجلا فقتلته ، ثم شدَّت بعمود الفسطاط ، فقتلت رجلين ، فقال لها الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : ارجعي يا أمَّ وهب ، أنت وابنك مع رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) فإن الجهاد مرفوع عن النساء ، فرجعت وهي تقول : إلهي لا تقطع رجائي ، فقال لها الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : لا يقطع الله رجاك يا أمَّ وهب.
After him, Amr ibn Khalid al-Azdi emerged and fought until he was killed—may God have mercy on him. The narrator said: Amr ibn al-Hajjaj shouted at the people: "You fools! Do you know whom you are fighting? You are fighting the bravest riders of the people of the city and the people of insight, and men who fight with determination. None of you confronts them without being killed despite their small numbers. By God, if you only threw stones at them, you would kill them." Then Umar ibn Sa'd—may God curse him—said: "The plan is as you suggested." So he sent among the people orders to refrain from engaging them in single combat, saying: "If you confront them individually, they will defeat you in duels."
ثمَّ برز من بعده عمرو بن خالد الأزدي وقاتل حتى قُتل ـ رحمه الله ـ قال الراوي : وصاح عمرو بن الحجاج بالناس : يا حمقى! أتدرون من تقاتلون ؟ تقاتلون فرسان أهل المصر وأهل البصائر وقوماً مستميتين ، لا يبرز منكم إليهم أحد إلاَّ قتلوه على قلّتهم ، والله لو لم ترموهم إلاَّ بالحجارة لقتلتموهم ، فقال له عمر بن سعد ـ لعنه الله ـ : الرأي ما رأيت ، فأرسل في الناس من يعزم عليهم أن لا يبارزهم رجل منهم ، وقال : لو خرجتم إليهم وحداناً لأتوا عليكم مبارزة.
Rooban bin Al-Hajjaj was among the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him), and he said: "O people of Kufa! Stick to your obedience and unity, and do not have doubts about killing those who deviate from the religion and oppose the Imam." Hussein (peace be upon him) replied: "O son of Al-Hajjaj! Are you inciting people against me? Are we the ones who have deviated from the religion, and you are the ones steadfast upon it? By God, you will indeed know which of us has deviated from the religion and who is more deserving of facing the fires of hell."
ودنا عمرو بن الحجاج من أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فقال : يا أهل الكوفة! الزموا طاعتكم وجماعتكم ، ولا ترتابوا في قتل من مرق من الدين وخالف الإمام ، فقال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : يا ابن الحجاج! أعليَّ تُحرِّض الناس ؟ أنحن مرقنا من الدين وأنتم ثبتّم عليه ؟ والله لتعلمنَّ أيّنا المارق من الدين ، ومن هو أولى بصلي النار.
Then Amr ibn al-Hajjaj, may God curse him, launched an attack with his right flank towards the Euphrates, causing a moment of chaos, until Muslim ibn Ausaja was struck down. Amr and his companions withdrew, and as the dust settled, Muslim was found fallen. Muhammad ibn Abi Talib said: He fell to the ground barely conscious. Al-Hussein, accompanied by Habib ibn Mazahir, approached him. Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him: "May God have mercy on you, O Muslim."
ثمَّ حمل عمرو بن الحجاج لعنه الله في ميمنته من نحو الفرات ، فاضطربوا ساعة ، فصُرع مسلم بن عوسجة ، وانصرف عمرو وأصحابه ، وانقطعت الغبرة فإذا مسلم صريع ، وقال محمد بن أبي طالب : فسقط إلى الأرض وبه رمق ، فمشى إليه الحسين ومعه حبيب بن مظاهر ، فقال له الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : رحمك الله يا مسلم فـ

"Among them are those who have fulfilled their vows, and among them are those who wait, and they have not changed in the least." Then, Habib approached him and said: "It grieves me to see you in this state, O Muslim. Rejoice in Paradise." Muslim responded weakly, "May Allah give you glad tidings of goodness." Habib then said, "If I did not know that I would soon follow you, I would ask you to entrust me with what concerns you." Muslim replied, "I entrust you with this" — and he pointed to Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) — "Fight to protect him until you die." Habib said, "May your eyes be comforted," and then he passed away. May Allah be pleased with him.
« مِنْهُمْ مَنْ قَضَى نَحْبَهُ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ وَمَا بَدَّلُوا تَبْدِيلا » ثمَّ دنا منه حبيب فقال : يعزُّ عليَّ مصرعك يا مسلم ، أبشر بالجنّة ، فقال له قولا ضعيفاً : بشَّرك الله بخير ، فقال له حبيب : لولا أعلم أنّي في الأثر لأحببت أن توصي إليَّ بكل ما أهمَّك ، فقال مسلم : فإني أوصيك بهذا ـ وأشار إلى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ـ فقاتل دونه حتى تموت ، فقال حبيب : لأنعمنَّك عيناً ، ثمَّ مات رضوان الله عليه.
He said: A maidservant cried out to him: "O my master! O son of Awsaja!" Then the companions of Ibn Sa'd called out in delight: "We have killed Muslim ibn Awsaja." But Shabath ibn Rib'i said to some of those around him: "May your mothers be bereaved of you. Indeed, you are killing yourselves with your own hands and debasing your honor. Do you rejoice at the killing of Muslim ibn Awsaja? By the one to whom I have submitted, he held many an honorable position among the Muslims. I indeed saw him one day in Azerbaijan, where he killed six of the polytheists before the Muslim cavalry managed to close ranks."
And by God, the poet is truthful when he says:
قال : وصاحت جارية له : يا سيّداه! يا ابن عوسجتاه! فنادى أصحاب ابن سعد مستبشرين : قتلنا مسلم بن عوسجة ، فقال شبث بن ربعي لبعض من حوله : ثكلتكم أمّهاتكم ، أما إنّكم تقتلون أنفسكم بأيديكم ، وتذلّون عزَّكم ، أتفرحون بقتل مسلم بن عوسجة ، أما والذي أسلمت له ، لرُبَّ موقف له في المسلمين كريم ، لقد رأيته يوم آذربيجان قتل ستة من المشركين قبل أن تلتام خيول المسلمين (1) ، ولله درّ الشاعر إذ يقول :
Men who continued while their roots were noble,
And their souls endured with patience until they fulfilled their endurance.
Guardians who protected a sanctity that God forbade to be violated,
So He elevated its status and honored its worth.
It then became a spoil for the raiders after them,
And from it, the daughters of the Chosen One were exposed in grief.
رِجَالٌ تَوَاصَوا حيثُ طَابَتْ أُصُولُهُمْ
وَأَنْفُسُهُمْ بالصَّبْرِ حَتَّى قَضَوا صَبْرا
حُمَاةٌ حَمَوا خِدْراً أَبَى اللهُ هَتْكَهُ
فَعَظَّمَهُ شَأْناً وَشَرَّفَهُ قَدْرَا
فَأَصْبَحَ نَهْباً لِلْمَغَاوِيرِ بَعْدَهُمْ
وَمِنْهُ بَنَاتُ المصطفى أُبْرِزَتْ حَسْرَى
And another said:
وقال آخر :
The foremost in nobility and elevation
And those who tomorrow will attain the ponds of Kauthar
If not for their swords and the strikes of their spears
Ears would not have heard the call of the takbeer
السَّابقون إِلَى المكارِمِ وَالْعُلَى
وَالحائِزُونَ غَداً حِيَاضَ الْكَوثَرِ
لولا صَوَارِمُهُمْ وَوَقْعُ نِبَالِهِمْ
لَمْ تَسْمَعِ الآذَانُ صَوْتَ مُكَبِّرِ (2)

In the fourth assembly, on the day of Ashura, the martyrdom of the supporters (peace be upon them) also
The narrator said: Then Shimr bin Dhi al-Jawshan charged at the left flank, and the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him) fiercely resisted and fought against them, even though they numbered only around thirty-two horsemen. Whenever they charged at a side of the people of Kufa, they drove them back. Then Umar bin Sa'ad called upon al-Husayn bin Numayr with five hundred archers, and they approached Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions, firing arrows at them. Soon, they wounded their horses, and they fought until midday while the battle intensified.
They could not attack them except from one side due to the formation and close arrangement of their structures. Umar bin Sa'ad sent men to dismantle the tents from their right and left flanks to encircle them. Groups of three or four of Hussein's companions would break through to fend off the men and attack them, causing them to fall and be killed.
قال الراوي : ثمَّ حمل شمر بن ذي الجوشن في الميسرة ، فثبتوا له ، وقاتلهم أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) قتالا شديداً ، وإنما هم اثنان وثلاثون فارساً ، فلا يحملون على جانب من أهل الكوفة إلاَّ كشفوهم ، فدعا عمر بن سعد بالحصين بن نمير في خمسمائة من الرماة ، فأقبلوا حتى دنوا من الحسين ( عليهم السلام ) وأصحابه ، فرشقوهم بالنبل ، فلم يلبثوا أن عقروا خيولهم ، وقاتلوهم حتى انتصف النهار ، واشتدَّ القتال ، ولم يقدروا أن يأتوهم إلاَّ من جانب واحد; لاجتماع أبنيتهم وتقارب بعضها من بعض ، فأرسل عمر بن سعد الرجال ليقوِّضوها عن أيمانهم وشمائلهم ليحيطوا بهم ، وأخذ الثلاثة والأربعة من أصحاب الحسين يتخلَّلون فيشدُّون على الرجل يعرض وينهب ، فيرمونه عن قريب فيصرعونه فيقتلونه.
Ibn Sa'd said: "Burn it with fire," so they set it ablaze. Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: "Let them burn it, for if they do so, they will not be able to reach you," and it happened as he (peace be upon him) said.
فقال ابن سعد : أحرقوها بالنار ، فأضرموا فيها ، فقال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : دعوهم يحرقوها ، فإنهم إذا فعلوا ذلك لم يجوزوا إليكم ، فكان كما قال ( عليه السلام ).
It was said: "You clung to victory by merely threatening," and they said: "We scared the women, may your mother lose you," so they felt ashamed and only fought them from one direction.
وقيل : أتاه شبث بن ربعي وقال : أفزعنا النساء ثكلتك أمُّك ، فاستحيى وأخذوا لا يقاتلونهم إلاَّ من وجه واحد.
The companions of Zuhair ibn Al-Qayn fought fiercely and killed Abu Adhrah al-Dabbabi, who was one of Shimar's men.
وشدّ أصحاب زهير بن القين فقتلوا أبا عذرة الضبابي من أصحاب شمر.
When one or two of the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him) were killed, their loss was evident among them due to their small number. However, when ten companions of Omar were killed, it was not noticeable among them because of their large numbers.
فلم يزل يُقتل من أصحاب الحسين ( عليه السلام ) الواحد والاثنان فيبين ذلك فيهم لقلَّتهم ، ويُقتل من أصحاب عمر العشرة فلا يبين فيهم ذلك لكثرتهم.
When Abu Thumama al-Sa’idi observed this, he said to al-Hussein (peace be upon him): "O Abu Abdullah! My life be sacrificed for yours. These people have drawn near to you, and by God, you shall not be killed before I am killed in your defense. And I wish to..."
فلمَّا رأى ذلك أبو ثمامة الصيداوي قال للحسين ( عليه السلام ) : يا أبا عبدالله! نفسي لنفسك الفداء ، هؤلاء اقتربوا منك ، ولا والله لا تقتل حتى أقتل دونك ، وأحبُّ أن

When the time for prayer arrived, Imam Hussein raised his head to the sky and said, "You reminded us of prayer. May Allah make you among those who establish prayer. This is its first time." Then he said, "Ask them to hold off from fighting us until we complete our prayer." Al-Hussain bin Numayr responded, "It will not be accepted." Habib bin Muzahir retorted, "You claim that the prayer of the Prophet's family is not accepted, but yours is, O horseman!"
Then, Al-Hussain bin Numayr charged at him, and Habib charged back at him, striking the face of Al-Hussain's horse with his sword. The horse reared up, causing Al-Hussain to fall from it. His companions surrounded him and rescued him.
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) then said to Zuhair bin Al-Qayn and Sa'id bin Abdullah, "Stand in front of me until I perform the noon prayer." They proceeded in front of him alongside half of his companions until he led them in the Prayer of Fear (Salat al-Khawf).
ألقى الله ربّي وقد صلَّيت هذه الصلاة ، فرفع الحسين رأسه إلى السماء وقال : ذكرت الصلاة ، جعلك الله من المصلّين ، نعم هذا أول وقتها ، ثمَّ قال : سلوهم أن يكفُّوا عنّا حتى نصلي ، فقال الحصين بن نمير : إنّها لا تقبل ، فقال حبيب بن مظاهر : لا تقبل الصلاة ـ زعمت ـ من ابن رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) وتقبل منك ياختار ، فحمل عليه حصين بن نمير ، وحمل عليه حبيب فضرب وجه فرسه بالسيف ، فشبَّ به الفرس ووقع عنه الحصين ، فاحتوشته أصحابه فاستنقذوه ، فقال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) لزهير بن القين وسعيد بن عبدالله : تقدَّما أمامي حتى أصلّي الظهر ، فتقدَّما أمامه في نحو من نصف أصحابه حتى صلَّى بهم صلاة الخوف.
It is narrated that Sa'id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi stepped in front of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and became a target for their arrows. Whenever Hussain (peace be upon him) would turn to the right or left, he stood between his hands. He continued to be struck by arrows until he fell to the ground, saying: "O Allah, curse them with the curse of 'Ad and Thamud. O Allah, convey my greetings to Your Prophet on my behalf, and inform him about the pain of the wounds I encountered. I did this to support the descendants of Your Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family)." Then he died, may Allah be pleased with him, and it was found that he had thirteen arrows in him, not counting those from sword strikes and spear thrusts.
وروي أن سعيد بن عبدالله الحنفي تقدَّم أمام الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فاستهدف لهم يرمونه بالنبل ، كلّما أخذ الحسين ( عليه السلام ) يميناً وشمالا قام بين يديه ، فما زال يُرمى به حتى سقط إلى الأرض وهو يقول : اللهم العنهم لعن عاد وثمود ، اللهم أبلغ نبيَّك السلام عنّي ، وأبلغه ما لقيت من ألم الجراح ، فإنّي أردت بذلك نصرة ذرّيّة نبيِّك ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) ، ثمَّ مات رضوان الله عليه ، فوجد به ثلاثة عشر سهماً سوى ما به من ضرب السيوف وطعن الرماح.
Ibn Nama said: It is said that Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions prayed individually by gesturing, and then it was said: Abdurrahman ibn Abdullah al-Yazni went out while he was saying:
وقال ابن نما : وقيل : صلَّى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وأصحابه فرادى بالإيماء ، ثم قالوا : ثمَّ خرج عبد الرحمان بن عبدالله اليزني وهو يقول :
I am the son of Abdullah from the family of Yazeed
My religion aligns with the faith of Hussein and Hassan
I strike you with the blows of a young man from Yemen
Hoping for success by that with the trusted one
أَنَا ابنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ مِنْ آلِ يَزَنْ
ديني على دينِ حسين وَحَسَنْ
أضربُكُمْ ضَرْبَ فَتَىً مِنَ الَْيمَنْ
أَرْجُو بذاك الفوزَ عِنْدَ المُؤْتَمَنْ
Then he charged into battle and fought until he was killed.
ثمَّ حمل فقاتل حتى قُتل.
The account continues: So Amr ibn Qurza al-Ansari went forth and sought permission from Hussain (peace be upon him), who granted it to him. He fought with the zeal of those longing for reward and was diligent in service to the Sovereign of the heavens. He managed to kill a great number of the supporters of Ibn Ziyad, combining correctness with his striving. Arrows never reached Hussain as long as he was present.
وقال السيِّد : فخرج عمرو بن قرظة الأنصاري فاستأذن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فأذن له : فقاتل قتال المشتاقين إلى الجزاء ، وبالغ في خدمة سلطان السماء ، حتى قتل جمعاً كثيراً من حزب ابن زياد ، وجمع بين سداد وجهاد ، وكان لا يأتي إلى الحسين سهم

There was no enemy that he did not confront with his hand, and no sword strike that he did not receive upon himself, ensuring that no harm reached Al-Hussain until he was covered in wounds. Then he turned to Al-Hussain and said: "O son of the Messenger of Allah! Have I fulfilled my pledge?" Al-Hussain replied: "Yes, you will be ahead of me in Paradise, so convey my greetings to the Messenger of Allah, and inform him that I am following soon." He continued to fight until he was killed. May Allah's mercy be upon him.
إلاَّ اتّقاه بيده ، ولا سيف إلاَّ تلقَّاه بمهجته ، فلم يكن يصل إلى الحسين سوء حتى أُثخن بالجراح ، فالتفت إلى الحسين وقال : يا ابن رسول الله! أوفيت ؟ قال : نعم ، أنت أمامي في الجنّة ، فاقرأ رسول الله منّي السلام ، وأعلمه أنّي في الأثر ، فقاتل حتى قُتل رضوان الله عليه.
It is mentioned in the anecdotes that he used to say:
وفي المناقب أنه كان يقول :
The battalion of the Ansar knows
That I will protect the sanctuary.
The strike of a youth not cowardly in combat,
For Hussein, I offer my life and home.
قَدْ عَلِمَتْ كتيبةُ الأنصارِ
أَنْ سوف أَحْمِي حَوْزَةَ الذِّمَارِ
ضَرْبَ غُلاَم غَيْرِ نَكْس شَارِي
دُوْنَ حُسَين مُهْجَتي وَدَاري
The man said: Then John, the servant of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, who was a black slave, approached. Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) said to him: "You have permission from me. You followed us in search of well-being, so do not encounter the hardships of our path." He replied: "O son of the Messenger of Allah! During times of prosperity, I shared in your provisions, and in times of adversity, I would abandon you? By Allah, my scent is unpleasant, my lineage is inferior, and my skin is black. Breathe upon me with the fragrance of Paradise so my scent becomes pleasant, my lineage honorable, and my face brightened. No, by Allah, I will not leave you until this black blood mixes with your blood."
وقال السيِّد : ثم تقدَّم جون مولى أبي ذر الغفاري ، وكان عبداً أسود ، فقال له الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : أنت في إذن منّي ، فإنّما تبعتنا طلباً للعافية ، فلا تبتلِ بطريقنا ، فقال : يا ابن رسول الله! أنا في الرخاء الحس قصاعكم ، وفي الشدّة أخذلكم ، والله إن ريحي لمنتن ، وإن حسبي للئيم ، ولوني لأسود ، فتنفَّس عليَّ بالجنّة ، فتطيب ريحي ، ويَشرف حسبي ، ويبيضّ وجهي ، لا والله لا أفارقكم حتى يختلط هذا الدم الأسود مع دمائكم (1) .
Then he fought until he was killed. Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) stood over him and said: "O Allah, make his face bright, make his scent pleasant, gather him with the righteous, and make him known to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)."
ثمَّ قاتل حتى قُتل ، فوقف عليه الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وقال : اللهم بيِّض وجهه ، وطيِّب ريحه ، واحشره مع الأبرار ، وعرِّف بينه وبين محمد وآل محمد ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ).
It is narrated from Al-Baqir (peace be upon him), from Ali ibn Al-Hussain (peace be upon both of them), that people used to attend the battlefield and bury the dead. They found John after ten days, and a scent of musk was emanating from him. May God's pleasure be upon him.
وروي عن الباقر ( عليه السلام ) ، عن علي بن الحسين ( عليهما السلام ) أن الناس كانوا يحضرون المعركة ، ويدفنون القتلى ، فوجدوا جوناً بعد عشرة أيام يفوح منه رائحة المسك رضوان الله عليه.
The narrator said: Then Hajjaj bin Masrooq, who was the muezzin of Hussein (peace be upon him), came out and said:
قال الراوي : ثمَّ خرج الحجاج بن مسروق ـ وهو مؤذِّن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ـ ويقول :
Advance, O Husayn, as a guide and Mahdi
Today you meet your grandfather, the Prophet
اقْدِمْ حسينُ هَادِياً مَهْدِيّا
اليومَ تَلْقَى جَدَّكَ النبيّا
