Student: She is eighteen years old, and Sheikh Al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said she was nineteen at the time, while it is also said that she was twenty-five years old, which would make him the elder. It is narrated that when Ali ibn al-Husayn Zain al-Abidin (peace be upon him) was brought before Ibn Ziyad, the latter asked him: "Who are you?" Ali ibn al-Husayn replied, "I am Ali ibn al-Husayn." Ibn Ziyad said, "Didn't God kill Ali ibn al-Husayn?" Ali (peace be upon him) replied, "I had a brother named Ali whom the people killed."
In another narration, Ali (peace be upon him) told Ibn Ziyad, "I had a brother named Ali, older than me, whom the people killed."
طالب : إنه ابن ثماني عشرة سنة ، وقال الشيخ المفيد عليه الرحمة إن له يومئذ تسع عشرة سنة ، وقيل إنه ابن خمس وعشرين سنة فيكون هو الأكبر ، وروي أنه لما أُدخل علي بن الحسين زين العابدين ( عليه السلام ) وعُرض على ابن زياد قال له : من أنت ؟ فقال له علي بن الحسين ، فقال : أليس قد قتل الله علي بن الحسين ؟ فقال له علي ( عليه السلام ) : قد كان لي أخ يسمَّى علياً قتله الناس (1) ، وفي رواية أنه ( عليه السلام ) قال لابن زياد : كان لي أخ يقال له : علي ، أكبر مني قتله الناس (2) .
In the book "Ma'al Al-Sibtain" by Al-Ha'iri, may God have mercy on him, regarding the biography of Ali Al-Akbar (peace be upon him), it is mentioned: His mother is Layla, the daughter of Abu Murra bin Urwah bin Masoud Al-Thaqafi. Urwah was one of the four nobles in Islam. Ali bin Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) inherited nobility and leadership from both sides. It is narrated in the book "Nafas Al-Mahmoom": The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: "There are four leaders in Islam: Bishr bin Halaal Al-Abdi, Adi bin Hatim, Saraqa bin Malik Al-Mudliji, and Urwah bin Masoud Al-Thaqafi." Urwah was one of the two great men referred to in the Qur'anic verse describing the disbelief of the Quraysh: "And they said, 'Why was this Qur'an not revealed to a great man from one of the two towns?'" (43:31).
وجاء في معالي السبطين للحائري عليه الرحمة في ترجمة علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) ، قال : وأمّه ليلى بنت أبي مرّة بن عروة بن مسعود الثقفي ، وكان عروة أحد السادة الأربعة في الإسلام ، وقد أخذ علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) الشرافة والسيادة من الطرفين ، روي في نفس المهموم : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : أربعة سادة في الإسلام : بشر بن هلال العبدي ، وعدي بن حاتم ، وسراقة بن مالك المدلجي ، وعروة بن مسعود الثقفي. وكان عروة أحد رجلين عظيمين في قوله تعالى حكاية عن كفار قريش : « وَقَالُوا لَوْلاَ نُزِّلَ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ عَلَى رَجُل مِنْ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيم » (3) .
This is the account of the man whom the Quraysh sent to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) on the day of Hudaybiyyah. He made a peace treaty with him while he was still a disbeliever, and then he accepted Islam in the ninth year of Hijrah after the return of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) from Ta’if. He sought permission from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) to return to his people. Upon his return, he called his people to Islam, but one of them shot him with an arrow while he was calling to prayer, and he died. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was informed of this, he said: "The example of 'Urwah is like the example of the companion of Yasin; he called his people to Allah and they killed him." He also said (peace be upon him and his family): “I saw Jesus, son of Mary, and the closest resemblance I have seen to him is 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud.”
وهذا هو الذي أرسلته قريش للنبيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يوم الحديبية ، فعقد معه الصلح وهو كافر ، ثمَّ أسلم سنة تسع من الهجرة بعد رجوع المصطفى ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) من الطائف ، واستأذن النبيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) في الرجوع لأهله ، فرجع ودعا قومه إلى الإسلام ، فرماه واحد منهم بسهم وهو يؤذّن للصلاة فمات ، فقال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لما بلغه ذلك : مثل عروة مثل صاحب ياسين ، دعا قومه إلى الله فقتلوه ، قال : وقال ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : ورأيت عيسى بن مريم فإذا أقرب من رأيت به شبهاً عروة بن مسعود.

Leila, the mother of Ali al-Akbar, was Maymouna bint Abi Sufyan bin Harb bin Umayya, nicknamed Umm Shi’ba. Muawiya was thus related to Leila as her maternal uncle, which is why a man from the people of Kufa called out to Ali al-Akbar as he went forth to fight: "You have a kinship with the Commander of the Faithful, Yazid; if you wish, we will grant you safety." To which Ali replied: "Woe to you, the kinship of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) is more deserving to be honored." Muawiya often praised Ali bin Al-Husayn (peace be upon him), to the extent that he once said to his companions: "Who is most deserving of the caliphate?" They said: "You are." He replied: "No, the one most deserving of the caliphate is Ali bin Al-Husayn bin Ali (peace be upon them), for his grandfather is the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and he possesses the bravery of the Banu Hashim, the generosity of the Banu Umayya, and the grandeur of Thaqif," referring to his handsome appearance.
وليلى أم علي الأكبر أمُّها ميمونة بنت أبي سفيان بن حرب بن أمية ، المكنَّاة بأم شيبة ، وكان معاوية خال ليلى أم علي الأكبر ، ولهذا ناداه رجل من أهل الكوفة حين برز علي الأكبر للقتال : إن لك رحماً بأمير المؤمنين يزيد ، فإن شئت آمنّاك ، فقال له : ويلك ، لقرابة رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أحقّ أن تُرعى ، وكان معاوية كثيراً يمدح علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) حتى قال يوماً لأصحابه : من أحق الناس بالخلافة ؟ قالوا : أنت ، قال : لا ، بل أحق الناس بالخلافة علي بن الحسين بن علي ( عليهم السلام ) جدّه رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ، وفيه شجاعة بني هاشم ، وسخاء بني أمية (1) ، وزهو ثقيف ، يعني المنظر الحسن.
It was narrated by Abu Ubaida and Khalaf Al-Ahmar that these verses were said about Ali bin Al-Husayn Al-Akbar, who was martyred at Karbala:
روي عن أبي عبيدة ، وخلف الأحمر ، أن هذه الأبيات قيلت في علي بن الحسين الأكبر ، المقتول بكربلاء :
He had eyes that never saw their match
From a walker without shoes or a traveler with them
He would boil the meat over flames until
It was cooked, yet not costing much for the eater
Whenever he lit a fire
He would kindle it from his honorable sharing
So that a poor destitute could see it
Or a lone traveler, without companions
I mean the son of Layla, of generosity and grace
I mean the son of the nobleborn
He does not prefer worldly life over his faith
And does not sell truth for falsehood
لم تَرَ عينٌ نَظَرَتْ مِثْلَهُ
من مُحْتَف يمشي وَلاَ نَاعِلِ
يَغْلِي نَهِيءَ اللَّحْمِ حَتَّى إذا
أُنْضِجَ لَمْ يَغْلُ على الآكِلِ
كان إذا شَبَّت له نَارُهُ
يُوقِدُها بالشَّرَفِ الْقَابِلِ
كيما يَرَاها بَائِسٌ مُرْمِلٌ
أَو فَرْدُ حيٍّ ليس بالآهِلِ
أعني ابنَ ليلى ذا السَّدَى والنَّدى
أعني ابنَ بنتِ الحَسَبِ الفاضلِ
لا يُؤْثِرُ الدنيا على دِيْنِهِ
ولا يبيعُ الحقَّ بالباطلِ
This poet praises Ali ibn Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) for his generosity and munificence, stating that no one in the world, after Hussain (peace be upon him), matches in generosity and kindness, feeding the needy, honoring guests, and giving to those who ask, like Ali Akbar (peace be upon him). He was passionate and keen on such acts that he would buy delicious foods, exquisite edibles, and fine meats at high prices, ordering them to be cooked.
هذا الشاعر يمدح علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) في الجود والسخاء ، ويقول : لم ير أحد في العالم بعد الحسين ( عليه السلام ) في الجود والكرم ، وإطعام المسكين ، وإكرام الضيف ، وإعطاء السائلين ، مثل علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) ، وكان مولعاً وحريصاً في ذلك بحيث يشتري الأطعمة والأغذية اللذيذة ، واللحوم الطيِّبة بالقيمة الغالية ، ويأمر بطبخها

He fed the destitute, the needy, guests, and others who came to him, treating them with utmost kindness, compassion, and mercy. It was the custom of Arabs who loved guests and went to great lengths to honor them, to light fires above their houses in summer and winter during dark nights. This was so that if a guest would come from afar in the dark night, he would be guided by the light of the fire towards the host and would not stray or lose his way, thus calling it "the fire of hospitality."
Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him), out of his great love for guests and his desire to honor them, would light many fires above his house and make them intensely bright, so that the destitute, the needy, the widow, and the orphan could see them and come to his house to partake of his food. For he was the lord of generosity, liberality, virtue, and benevolence, the product of noble lineage and ancestry. He was, moreover, firmly established in religion and faith, such that he would not prefer worldly matters over his religion, nor trade truth for falsehood.
وانضاجها ، ويطعم البائس والمسكين والضيوف والواردين ، وهو عليهم في غاية الشفقة واللطف والرحمة ، وكان من عادة العرب الذين يحبّون الضيف ويبالغون في إكرامه أن يشعلوا ناراً فوق البيوت في الصيف والشتاء ، في الليالي المظلمة ، حتى إذا جاءهم ضيفٌ من بعيد في الليل المظلم فبتلك النار يهتدي الطريق إلى المضيف ، ولا يتعسَّف ، ولا يضلّ الطريق ، ويسمّونها نار القرى ، وكان علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) من غاية حبِّه للضيف وإكرامه له إذا أشعل النار فوق بيته أشعلها كثيراً ، وفي غاية الاشتعال لكي يراها البائس والمسكين والمرمل واليتيم ، وينزل في داره على طعامه ، كيف وهو ربُّ الجود والسخاء والفضل والندى ورضيع الحسب والنسب ، وكان ( عليه السلام ) في الدين واليقين بمكان مكين بحيث لا يؤثر دنياه على دينه ، ولا يبيع الحق بالباطل.
He said: "For anyone with such a nature of generosity and hospitality, the matter would lead him to approach his father (peace be upon him) and say: 'O Father, thirst has killed me.'"
قال : ومن كانت هذه سجيّته في الكرم وإطعام الضيوف آل أمره إلى أن وقف على أبيه ( عليه السلام ) وقال : يا أبتاه ، العطش قد قتلني.
Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him) was a young man of handsome appearance and charming demeanor, with no equal in these qualities. He was renowned for his bravery, as well as his noble characteristics such as majesty, greatness, generosity, and good manners, among other attributes.
وكان علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) شاباً حسن الصورة ، صبيح المنظر ، لا نظير له ، وفي الشجاعة مشهور ، وكذلك في صفات الكمال من الجلالة والعظمة والسخاء ، وحسن الأخلاق وغير ذلك (1) .
Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him) was the most handsome among people in appearance, and the best in character, conduct, and speech. He closely resembled the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), according to the testimony of the Master of the Youth of Paradise (peace be upon him). It is narrated that when he sought his father's permission to fight, his father looked at him with a glance of despair, lowered his eyes, and wept. Then he raised his index fingers toward the sky and said: "O Allah, be witness to them, for a young man is advancing towards them who resembles Your Messenger the most in appearance, character, and speech. Whenever we longed to see Your Prophet, we would look at him."
وكان علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) من أصبح الناس وجهاً ، وأحسنهم خَلقاً وخُلقاً ومنطقاً ، وكان أشبه الناس برسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ، وذلك بشهادة سيِّد شباب أهل الجنة ( عليه السلام ) ، فقد روي أنه لمَّا استأذن أباه في القتال نظر إليه نظرة آيس منه ، وأرخى عينيه فبكى ، ثمَّ رفع سبَّابتيه نحو السماء وقال : اللهم كن أنت الشهيد عليهم ، فقد برز إليهم غلام أشبه الناس خلقاً وخُلقاً ومنطقاً برسولك ، وكنّا إذا اشتقنا إلى نبيِّك نظرنا إليه (2)

Hajjat Sheikh Ali Al-Jishi, may he rest in peace, speaks on behalf of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him):
ويقول الحجّة الشيخ علي الجشي عليه الرحمة على لسان الحسين ( عليه السلام ) :
His speech and qualities resemble those of my grandfather,
Noble in deeds with a sweet nature and meanings.
My son, fate has drawn its bow,
And struck you, but in my heart, it struck me.
My son, your absence leaves not a Muslim here,
Who does not weep bitterly with tears of blood.
Since you fill their thoughts whenever they long
To see the Prophet and the master of all existence.
أَشبيهَ جدّي منطقاً وخلائقاً
كَرُمَتْ وفي خَلْق حَلاَ وَمَعَاني
أبُنيَّ إنَّ الدهرَ فَوَّقَ سَهْمَهُ
وَرَمَاك لكنْ في الفؤادِ رماني
أبُنيَّ فَقْدُكَ لم يَدَعْ مِنْ مُسْلِم
إلاَّ بكاك شجاً بدَمْع قاني
إِذْ أنت سِلْوَتُهُم إذا اشتاقوا إلى
رُؤْيَا النبيِّ وسيِّدِ الأكوانِ (1)
To the esteemed Sheikh Abdul Hussein Al-Ameli, may mercy be upon him, who also says in it:
ولله درّ الشيخ عبد الحسين العاملي عليه الرحمة إذ يقول فيه أيضاً :
He has gathered all the noble traits as his heritage
From every noble and courageous leader
In the might of Hamza, in the bravery of Haidar
And in the pride of Husayn, and the majesty of Ahmad
And you see him in character and good qualities
And eloquent speech like the Prophet Muhammad
He strikes the battalions, whether flags or shields
In the manner of his fiery bravery
جَمَعَ الصفاتِ الغُرَّ وهي تُرَاثُهُ
من كُلِّ غِطْريف وشَهْم أصيدِ
في بَأْسِ حَمْزَةَ في شُجَاعَةِ حيدر
وإبا الحُسَينِ وفي مَهَابَةِ أحمدِ
وتراه في خَلْق وَطِيْبِ خَلاَئق
وبليغِ نُطْق كالنبيِّ محمَّدِ
يرمي الكَتَائِبَ والفلا غَصَّت بها
في مِثْلِها من بَأْسِهِ المتوقِّدِ (2)
The Second Assembly, from the ninth day, dedicated to Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him)
Let the mourners weep for the pure ones from the family of Muhammad and Ali, peace be upon them and their family. Let the lamenters lament for them, and for their sake, let the tears flow. Let the criers cry out, and let those who grieve express their sadness. Cry out for the whereabouts of Hasan and Husayn, the sons of Husayn, one righteous after another, one truthful after another. Where is the path after the path? Where are the chosen ones after the chosen ones? Where are the rising suns? Where are the shining moons? Where are the radiant stars? Where are the banners of religion and the foundations of knowledge?
فعل الأطائب من أهل بيت محمَّد وعلي صلَّى الله عليهما وآلهما فليبك الباكون ، وإياهم فليندب النادبون ، ولمثلهم فلتذرف الدموع ، وليصرخ الصارخون ، ويضجَّ الضاجون ، ويعجَّ العاجون ، أين الحسن وأين الحسين ، أين أبناء الحسين ، صالح بعد صالح ، وصادق بعد صادق ، أين السبيل بعد السبيل ، أين الخيرة بعد الخيرة ، أين الشموس الطالعة ، أين الأقمار المنيرة ، أين الأنجم الزاهرة ، أين أعلام الدين وقواعد العلم

It is mentioned in the book "Maqatil al-Talibiyyin" that Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) was born during the caliphate of Uthman and he narrated from his grandfather Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).
جاء في مقاتل الطالبيين أن علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ولد في خلافة عثمان وقد روى عن جدّه علي بن أبي طالب ( عليه السلام ) (1) .
Regarding the noble grandsons, it is said: The people of Medina, whenever they longed to see the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), would look at Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him). Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) loved him intensely, so much so that whenever he saw him, he would be filled with great joy and happiness. If Ali al-Akbar asked him for something, he would never deny him, even if it was miraculous in nature. Kathir ibn Shadhan said, "I witnessed Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) when his son Ali al-Akbar expressed a desire for grapes out of season. Hussein touched one of the pillars of the mosque, and it produced grapes and bananas, which he then offered to him. He (peace be upon him) said, 'What is with God for His friends is more.'"
وفي معالي السبطين قال : وكان أهل المدينة إذا اشتاقوا إلى النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نظروا إلى علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) ، وكان الحسين ( عليه السلام ) يحبه حباً شديداً بحيث إذا رآه فرح به وسرَّ سروراً عظيماً ، وإذا سأله حاجة لا يردّه أبداً ولو على سبيل الإعجاز ، قال كثير ابن شاذان : شهدت الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) وقد اشتهى عليه ابنه علي الأكبر عنباً في غير أوانه ، فضرب بيده إلى سارية المسجد ، فأخرج له عنباً وموزاً فأطعمه ، وقال ( عليه السلام ) : ما عند الله لأوليائه أكثر (2) .
I say: Is it conceivable that someone who loves his child to such a degree, never refusing any need until it is fulfilled for him, even miraculously, what would his condition be when this child returns from the battlefield and asks for a sip of water, while he is unable to give it to him or quench his thirst?
أقول : أفمن كان حبُّه لولده بهذه المثابة بحيث لا يردّه عن حاجة حتى يقضيها له ولو على سبيل الإعجاز فما حاله حين رجع هذا الولد من المعركة ، وطلب منه جرعة من الماء ، وهو لا يتمكَّن من أن يعطيه ويسقيه ؟ (3)
Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him) was known for his firmness in faith and defense of the truth, and that he feared not death in the way of Allah Almighty. Uqba bin Samaan narrated about the journey of Hussein (peace be upon him) to Karbala, saying: We traveled with him for a while, and he had a moment of drowsiness while on his horse, then he woke up saying: "Surely we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." He did this two or three times, so his son Ali bin Hussein (peace be upon him) approached him and asked: "O father, why are you praising Allah and expressing readiness to return to Him?" He replied: "O my son, I had a brief moment of drowsiness, and in it, a rider appeared to me on a horse saying: 'The people are moving, and death is coming to them.' I realized that our souls are being given notice." Ali bin Hussein responded: "O father, may Allah not show you anything bad. Are we not on the truth?" He said: "Yes, by Allah, to whom all servants shall return." Ali then replied: "In that case, we fear nothing."
وعُرف عن علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) صلابته في الدين ودفاعه عن الحق ، وأنه لا يهاب الموت في سبيل الله تعالى ، روى عقبة بن سمعان في مسير الحسين ( عليه السلام ) إلى كربلاء قال : فسرنا معه ساعة ، فخفق ( عليه السلام ) وهو على ظهر فرسه خفقة ، ثم انتبه وهو يقول : إنّا لله وإنّا إليه راجعون ، والحمد لله ربِّ العالمين ، ففعل ذلك مرّتين أو ثلاثاً ، فأقبل إليه ابنه علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) فقال : مم حمدت الله واسترجعت ؟ قال : يا بنيَّ ، إني خفقت خفقة ، فعنَّ لي فارس على فرس وهو يقول : القوم يسيرون ، والمنايا تسير إليهم ، فعلمت أنها أنفسنا نعيت إلينا ، فقال له : يا أبت : لا أراك الله سوءاً ، ألسنا على الحق ؟ قال : بلى والله الذي مرجع العباد إليه ، فقال : فإنّنا إذاً ما

نبالي أن نموت محقّين.
Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) said, "May Allah reward you, my son, with the best reward given to a son on behalf of his father."
فقال له الحسين ( عليه السلام ) : جزاك الله من ولد خير ما جزى ولداً عن والده (1) .
In "Bihar al-Anwar," Allama al-Majlisi, may he rest in peace, said: They reported that Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) advanced, and Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and Abu al-Faraj stated: His mother was Layla bint Abi Murra ibn Urwah ibn Mas'ud al-Thaqafi, and at that time he was eighteen years old, while Ibn Shahrashub said he was twenty-five years old.
They said: Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) raised his index finger towards the sky and said: O Allah, bear witness against these people, for a young man resembling Your Messenger the most in appearance, character, and speech has now emerged to confront them. Whenever we longed to see Your Prophet, we looked at his face. O Allah, deprive them of the blessings of the earth, scatter them far and wide, tear them apart into shreds, and make them divergent groups. Never let the rulers be pleased with them, for they called us to help us and then turned against us to fight us.
وفي بحار الأنوار قال العلامة المجلسي عليه الرحمة : قالوا : ثمَّ تقدَّم علي بن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، وقال محمد بن أبي طالب وأبو الفرج : وأمه ليلى بنت أبي مرة بن عروة بن مسعود الثقفي ، وهو يومئذ ابن ثماني عشرة سنة ، وقال ابن شهر آشوب : ويقال : ابن خمس وعشرين سنة ، قالوا : ورفع الحسين ( عليه السلام ) سبَّابته نحو السماء وقال : اللهم اشهد على هؤلاء القوم ، فقد برز إليهم غلام أشبه الناس خلقاً وخلقاً ومنطقاً برسولك ، وكنّا إذا اشتقنا إلى نبيِّك نظرنا إلى وجهه ، اللهم امنعهم بركات الأرض ، وفرِّقهم تفريقاً ، ومزِّقهم تمزيقاً ، واجعلهم طرائق قدداً ، ولا ترض الولاة عنهم أبداً ، فإنهم دعونا لينصرونا ، ثمَّ عدوا علينا يقاتلوننا.
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) addressed Umar ibn Sa'd: "What is wrong with you? May Allah cut off your descendants, and may He not bless you in your endeavors. May He send upon you someone who will slaughter you in your bed after me, as you have severed my kin and did not respect my relation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)." Then Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) raised his voice and recited: "Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran over the worlds*Descendants, some of them from others, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing." Then Ali, the son of Hussein, charged at the crowd, saying:
ثم صاح الحسين ( عليه السلام ) بعمر بن سعد : ما لك ؟ قطع الله رحمك! ولا بارك الله لك في أمرك ، وسلَّط عليك من يذبحك بعدي على فراشك ، كما قطعت رحمي ، ولم تحفظ قرابتي من رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ، ثمَّ رفع الحسين ( عليه السلام ) صوته وتلا : « إِنَّ اللهَ اصْطَفَى آدَمَ وَنُوحاً وَآلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلَ عِمْرَانَ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ * ذُرِّيَّةً بَعْضُهَا مِنْ بَعْض وَاللهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ». ثمَّ حمل علي بن الحسين على القوم ، وهو يقول :
I am Ali, son of Al-Husayn, son of Ali
From a family whose grandfather is the Prophet
By God, a son of an ignoble one will not rule over us
I will pierce you with my spear until it bends
I will strike you with the sword to protect my father
Striking like a Hashimite Alawite youth
أنا عليُّ بنُ الحسينِ بنِ علي
من عُصْبَة جَدُّ أبيهِمُ النبي
واللهِ لا يحكُمُ فينا ابنُ الدَّعِي
أَطْعَنُكُمْ بالرُّمْحِ حتَّى ينثني
أَضْرِبُكُم بالسيفِ أَحْمِي عن أبي
ضَرْبَ غُلاَم هاشميٍّ علوي
The young fighter continued to battle fiercely until people were exasperated by the large number of those he had killed. It is reported that he killed one hundred and twenty men during their thirst. Then, he returned to his father, having sustained many injuries, and said, "Father, the thirst is killing me, and the weight of the armor is exhausting me. Is there any chance for a sip of water?"
فلم يزل يقاتل حتى ضجَّ الناس من كثرة من قتل منهم ، وروي أنه قتل على عطشه مائة وعشرين رجلا ، ثمَّ رجع إلى أبيه وقد أصابته جراحات كثيرة فقال : يا أبه! العطش قد قتلني ، وثقل الحديد أجهدني ، فهل إلى شربة من ماء سبيل

Do I strengthen myself with it against the enemies? Upon hearing this, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) wept and said, "My son, it hurts Muhammad, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and me that you call upon them and they do not respond, and that you seek their help and they do not aid you. My son, give me your tongue." He took his son's tongue, sucked it, and then gave him his ring, saying, "Hold it in your mouth and return to fight your enemy, for I hope that you shall not be touched by death today until your grandfather quenches your thirst with his everlasting cup, from which you shall never thirst again." He returned to battle, saying:
أتقوَّى بها على الأعداء ؟ فبكى الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وقال : يا بنيَّ ، يعزُّ على محمد وعلى علي بن أبي طالب وعليَّ أن تدعوهم فلا يجيبوك ، وتستغيث بهم فلا يغيثوك ، يا بنيَّ ، هاتِ لسانك ، فأخذ بلسانه فمصَّه ، ودفع إليه خاتمه وقال : أمسكه في فيك ، وارجع إلى قتال عدوك ، فإني أرجو أنك لا تمسي حتى يسقيك جدّك بكأسه الأوفى شربة لا تظمأ بعدها أبداً. فرجع إلى القتال وهو يقول :
War has revealed its truths
And after it, the realities have emerged
By God, the Lord of the Throne, we shall not part
From your ranks or until the gleaming swords are sheathed
الحَرْبُ قد بانت لها الحَقَائِقُ
وَظَهَرَتْ من بَعْدِها مَصَادِقُ
واللهِ ربِّ العَرْشِ لاَ نُفَارِقُ
جُمُوعَكُمْ أو تُغْمَدَ البَوَارِقُ
The film continued to fight until the total reached two hundred, then Mizlaq was struck on the crown of his head by Naqab ibn Murrah al-Abdi, a blow that felled him. The people then attacked him with their swords, and he clung to his horse which carried him to the enemy camp, where they cut him to pieces with their swords.
فلم يزل يقاتل حتى قتل تمام المائتين ، ثمَّ ضربه منقذ بن مرّة العبدي على مفرق رأسه ضربة صرعته ، وضربه الناس بأسيافهم ، ثمَّ اعتنق فرسه فاحتمله الفرس إلى عسكر الأعداء ، فقطَّعوه بسيوفهم إرباً إرباً.
When his soul reached his throat, he raised his voice and said: "O my father, here is my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), who has given me the fullest cup to drink from, after which I shall never thirst again. He is saying: Hurry, hurry! Surely, for you there is a preserved cup that you will drink from now." Then Husayn (peace be upon him) cried out and said: "May Allah kill the people who killed you. How daring they are against the Most Merciful, against His Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), and against violating the sanctity of the Messenger. Let the world after you be obliterated."
فلما بلغت الروح التراقي قال رافعاً صوته : يا أبتاه ، هذا جدّي رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قد سقاني بكأسه الأوفى شربة لا أظمأ بعدها أبداً ، وهو يقول : العجل العجل! فإن لك كأساً مذخورة حتى تشربها الساعة ، فصاح الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وقال : قتل الله قوماً قتلوك ، ما أجرأهم على الرحمان وعلى رسوله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ، وعلى انتهاك حرمة الرسول ، وعلى الدنيا بعدك العفا.
Al-Humayd ibn Muslim said: It is as if I see a woman rushing out with the radiance of the rising sun, calling out in lamentation and distress, saying: "Oh beloved one, oh fruit of my heart, oh light of my eyes!" I inquired about her and was told: She is Zainab bint Ali (peace be upon him). She came and threw herself upon him. Then Husayn came and took her by the hand, returning her to the tent. He (peace be upon him) approached his young men and said: "Carry your brother," so they lifted him from the battlefield and brought him until they placed him by the tent in front of which they had been fighting.
قال حميد بن مسلم : فكأني أنظر إلى امرأة خرجت مسرعة كأنها الشمس الطالعة ، تنادي بالويل والثبور ، وتقول : يا حبيباه ، يا ثمرة فؤاداه ، يا نور عيناه! فسألت عنها فقيل : هي زينب بنت علي ( عليه السلام ) ، وجاءت وانكبَّت عليه ، فجاء الحسين فأخذ بيدها فردَّها إلى الفسطاط ، وأقبل ( عليه السلام ) بفتيانه وقال : احملوا أخاكم ، فحملوه من مصرعه فجاؤوا به حتى وضعوه عند الفسطاط الذي كانوا يقاتلون أمامه (1)

The late Sheikh Ja'far Al-Tasstari, may mercy be upon him, said: In the tragedy of his son, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) was close to death three times. The first time was when Ali Al-Akbar went out to fight and asked his father for permission, which he granted. He dressed him in armor and equipped him with weapons, and mounted him on the horse. Ali Al-Akbar's face shone like the sun as he prepared to leave, and as his hand gripped the reins and his foot was in the stirrup, the women gathered around him, grabbing his reins and stirrups, trying to prevent him from going. At this time, Hussein's (peace be upon him) condition changed to the extent that he was near death. He cried out to his women and family, asking them to let him go, for he was marked by God and was to be killed in His cause. Then, he took his son's hand and led him out from among the women, looking at him as if it was the last time.
The second instance was when Hussein (peace be upon him) was close to death, and that was when Ali Al-Akbar returned from the battlefield, wounded and with blood flowing from beneath his armor. The intensity of the heat and thirst had taken a toll on him, and he said, "Oh father, thirst is overcoming me." Hussein (peace be upon him) held him close to his chest and cried, overwhelmed with grief and sorrow because he could not quench his son's thirst.
The third time was when he saw Ali fall and heard him say, "Oh father, may peace be upon you." Sukaynah said: When my father heard his son's voice, I looked at him and saw him near death; his eyes were turning as someone who is dying, looking towards the direction of the tent, as if his soul was about to leave his body. He cried out from the middle of the tent, "My son, may God kill the people who killed you."
قال المرحوم الشيخ جعفر التستري عليه الرحمة : إن الحسين ( عليه السلام ) في مصيبة ولده قد احتضر وأشرف على الموت ثلاث مرَّات ، الأولى ، لمَّا برز علي الأكبر واستأذن أباه فأذن له ، وألبسه الدرع والسلاح ، وأركبه على العقاب ، قال رضي الله عنه : فلمَّا تجلَّى وجه طلعته من أفق العقاب ، واستولت يده وقدمه على العنان والركاب ، خرجن النساء وأحدقن به فأخذت عمَّاته وأخواته بعنانه وركابه ، ومنعنه من العزيمة ، فعند ذلك تغيَّر حال الحسين ( عليه السلام ) بحيث أشرف على الموت ، وصاح بنسائه وعياله ، دعنه فإنه ممسوس في الله ومقتول في سبيل الله ، ثم أخذ بيده وأخرجه من بينهن ، فنظر إليه نظر آيس منه ، والثانية : التي احتضر فيها الحسين ( عليه السلام ) وذلك حين رجع علي الأكبر ( عليه السلام ) من المعركة وقد أصابته جراحات كثيرة ، والدم يجري من حلق درعه ، وقد اشتدَّ به الحرُّ والعطش ، وقف وقال : يا أبه العطش ، فضمَّه الحسين ( عليه السلام ) إلى صدره ، وبكى وأشرف على الموت من شدّة الهمّ والحزن من حيث أنه لا يتمكَّن من سقيه ، والمرَّة الثالثة : حين رأى علياً سقط ونادى : يا أبه عليك منّي السلام ، قالت سكينة : لمَّا سمع أبي صوت ولده نظرت إليه فرأيته قد أشرف على الموت ، وعيناه تدوران كالمحتضر ، وجعل ينظر إلى أطراف الخيمة ، وكادت روحه أن تطلع من جسده ، وصاح من وسط الخيمة : ولدي ، قتل الله قوماً قتلوك (1) .
Oh star, how short was your lifespan
And so is the life of the morning stars
And the crescent of past days did not become full
Nor was it given time for a full moon
The eclipse rushed upon it before its due time
So it faded before reaching its full brightness
I weep for him, then apologize to him
You were fortunate when you left the realm of the wicked
I resided near my enemies, while he resided near his Lord
How vast the difference between my neighbor and his
يا كوكباً ما كان أَقْصَرَ عُمْرَهُ
وكذاك عُمْرُ كَوَاكِبِ الأسحارِ
وهلالَ أيَّام مضى لم يَسْتَدِرْ
بدراً ولم يُمْهَلْ لِوَقْتِ سَرَارِ
عَجِلَ الخُسُوفُ عليه قَبْلَ أَوَانِهِ
فَمَحَاه قَبْلَ مَظَنَّةِ الإبدارِ
أبكيهِ ثمَّ أقولُ معتذراً له
وُفِّقْتَ حين تَرَكْتَ أَلأَمَ دَارِ
جَاوَرْتُ أعدائي وَجَاوَرَ ربَّه
شَتَّانَ بين جِوَارِهِ وَجِوَاري

And another said:
وقال آخر :
You were the darkness of my eye
Which for you the beholder weeps
Let whoever wishes die after you
For your sake, I would be wary
كُنْتَ السوادَ لِمُقْلَتي
يبكي عليك النَّاظِرُ
مَنْ شَاءَ بَعْدَكَ فَلْيَمُتْ
فعليكَ كنتُ أُحَاذِرُ
Session Three, on the Ninth Day: The Virtue of Weeping for Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the Tragedies of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them)
It is mentioned in some of the visitations of the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them): "Are there any tragedies, O my lords, except those which befell you, and any calamities except those that encompassed you, and any disasters except those that were specific to you, and any shocks except those that struck you? Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you, upon your souls, and upon your bodies. May the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. By my father and mother, O family of Mustafa, we have nothing but to circumambulate your shrines and to console your spirits with these immense tragedies that have befallen your domain and these great calamities that have descended upon your sanctuaries, which have left wounds in the hearts of your followers, caused them internal anguish, and planted sorrow in their chests."
"We bear witness before Allah that we have participated with your allies and supporters of the past in shedding the blood of those who broke their oaths, deviated, and rebelled, and those who killed Abu Abdullah, the Master of the Youths of Paradise, on the Day of Karbala, with our intentions and hearts, and in longing for those positions of presence and support for you. May Allah convey our greetings to you."
جاء في بعض زيارات أئمة أهل البيت ( عليهم السلام ) : فهل المحن يا ساداتي إلاَّ التي لزمتكم ، والمصائب إلاَّ التي عمَّتكم ، والفجائع إلاَّ التي خصَّتكم ، والقوارع إلاَّ التي طرقتكم ، صلوات الله عليكم وعلى أرواحكم وأجسادكم ، ورحمة الله وبركاته ، بأبي وأمي يا آل المصطفى ، إنّا لا نملك إلاَّ أن نطوف حول مشاهدكم ، ونعزّي فيها أرواحكم ، على هذه المصائب العظيمة الحالّة بفنائكم ، والرزايا الجليلة النازلة بساحتكم ، التي أثبتت في قلوب شيعتكم القروح ، وأورثت أكبادهم الجروح ، وزرعت في صدورهم الغصص ، فنحن نشهد الله أنّا قد شاركنا أولياءكم وأنصاركم المتقدِّمين ، في إراقة دماء الناكثين والقاسطين والمارقين ، وقتلة أبي عبدالله سيِّد شباب أهل الجنة يوم كربلاء ، بالنيَّات والقلوب ، والتأسُّف على فوت تلك المواقف ، التي حضروا لنصرتكم ، والله وليّي يبلِّغكم منّي السلام

Sheikh Ja'far al-Tustari, may he rest in peace, mentioned in the book "Al-Khassa al-Husayniyya" a narration from Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), who said: "Our Shia are from us and were created from the remainder of our clay, and they were bonded with the light of our guardianship. They are satisfied with us as Imams and we are satisfied with them as Shia. What afflicts us afflicts them, and our calamities make them weep."
ذكر الشيخ جعفر التستري عليه الرحمة في الخصاص الحسينية رواية عن الإمام الصادق ( عليه السلام ) قال : شيعتنا منا وقد خلقوا من فاضل طينتنا ، وعجنوا بنور ولايتنا ، رضوا بنا أئمة ورضينا بهم شيعة ، يصيبهم ما أصابنا وتبكيهم مصائبنا ،

Their sadness saddens us, and their joy brings us joy. We also feel pain from their suffering, and we keep abreast of their conditions, for they are with us, never parting from us, and we do not part from them. Then he said: O Allah, our followers are from us; whoever remembers our suffering and weeps for our sake, God is too shy to punish them with fire.
ويحزنهم حزننا ، ويسرهم سرورنا ، ونحن أيضا نتألم بتألمهم ، ونطلع على أحوالهم فهم معنا لا يفارقونا ، ونحن لا نفارقهم ، ثم قال : اللهم : ان شيعتنا منا فمن ذكر مصابنا وبكى لأجلنا استحيى الله أن يعذبه بالنار (1) .
Ruwayya 'an Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal, from his father, who said: Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever remembers our suffering and weeps for the wrongs done to us will be with us at our rank on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever remembers our suffering and cries, making others cry, will not weep on the Day when eyes shall weep. And whoever sits in a gathering where our matter is revived shall not have his heart die on the Day when hearts die."
روي عن علي بن الحسن بن فضال ، عن أبيه قال : قال الرضا ( عليه السلام ) : من تذكَّر مصابنا وبكى لما اُرتكب منّا كان معنا في درجتنا يوم القيامة ، ومن ذكر بمصابنا فبكى وأبكى لم تبك عينه يوم تبكي العيون ، ومن جلس مجلساً يُحيى فيه أمرنا لم يمت قلبه يوم تموت القلوب.
An Arabic proverb states: "Whoever remembers us or is reminded of us, and a tear as small as a mosquito's wing falls from his eye, Allah will forgive his sins, even if they are as numerous as the foam of the sea."
وعن بكر بن محمد ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : من ذَكرنا أو ذُكرنا عنده فخرج من عينه دمع مثل جناح بعوضة غفر الله له ذنوبه ولو كانت مثل زبد البحر.
From Aban bin Taghlib, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: "The sigh of one who grieves for us is an act of glorification, and their concern for us is worship, and keeping our secret is striving in the way of Allah." Then Abu Abdullah said, "This hadith ought to be written in gold."
وعن أبان بن تغلب ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : نفس المهموم لظلمنا تسبيح ، وهمّه لنا عبادة ، وكتمان سرِّنا جهاد في سبيل الله. ثم قال أبو عبدالله : يجب أن يكتب هذا الحديث بالذهب.
And Muhammad bin Abi Amara Al-Kufi said: I heard Ja'far bin Muhammad (peace be upon them) say: "Whoever sheds tears for a drop of blood shed from us, or a right of ours that has been diminished, or an honor of ours that has been violated, or for one of our followers, God Almighty will grant them a place in Paradise for a long time."
وعن محمد بن أبي عمارة الكوفي قال : سمعت جعفر بن محمد ( عليهما السلام ) يقول : من دمعت عينه فينا دمعة لدم سُفِك لنا أو حقٍّ لنا نقصناه ، أو عرض انتهك لنا ، أو لأحد من شيعتنا ، بوَّأه الله تعالى بها في الجنة حُقباً.
Rabi' bin al-Mundhir related from his father, from Al-Husayn bin Ali (peace be upon them), who said: "No servant sheds a tear or cries out of fear for anything, except that Allah grants him a place in Paradise for an age." Ahmad bin Yahya al-Awdi said: I saw Al-Husayn bin Ali (peace be upon them) in a dream, and I said: Mukhol bin Ibrahim narrated to me, from Rabi' bin al-Mundhir, from his father, from you, that you said: "No servant sheds a tear or cries except that Allah grants him a place in Paradise for an age?" He said: Yes, I did.
وعن الربيع بن المنذر ، عن أبيه ، عن الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) قال : ما من عبد قطرت عيناه فينا قطرة أو دمعت عيناه فينا دمعه إلاَّ بوَّأه الله بها في الجنة حقباً ، قال أحمد بن يحيى الأودي : فرأيت الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) في المنام فقلت : حدَّثني مخول بن إبراهيم ، عن الربع بن المنذر ، عن أبيه ، عنك أنك قلت : ما من عبد قطرت عيناه فينا قطرة أو دمعت عيناه فينا دمعة إلاَّ بوَّأه الله بها في الجنة حقباً ؟ قال : نعم ، قلت :

Al-Fudayl reported from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) who said: Whoever mentions us in their presence and their eyes overflow with tears, even if as small as the wings of a fly, their sins will be forgiven, even if they were as abundant as the foam of the sea.
وعن فضيل ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : من ذكرنا عنده ففاضت عيناه ولو مثل جناح الذباب غفر له ذنوبه ولو كانت مثل زبد البحر.
Fudhayl ibn Fadalah narrated from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) who said: "Whoever remembers us and their eyes overflow with tears, Allah will make their face forbidden from the Fire."
وعن فضيل بن فضالة ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : من ذكرنا عنده ففاضت عيناه حرَّم الله وجهه على النار (2) .
Mr. Ibn Tawus, may he rest in peace, said: It is narrated from the family of the Prophet (peace be upon them) that they said: Whoever cries and makes a hundred others cry will have Paradise, whoever cries and makes fifty others cry will have Paradise, whoever cries and makes thirty others cry will have Paradise, whoever cries and makes twenty others cry will have Paradise, whoever cries and makes ten others cry will have Paradise, whoever cries and makes one person cry will have Paradise, and whoever makes an effort to cry will have Paradise.
قال السيد ابن طاووس عليه الرحمة : روي عن آل الرسول ( عليهم السلام ) أنهم قالوا : من بكى وأبكى فينا مائة فله الجنة ، ومن بكى وأبكى خمسين فله الجنة ، ومن بكى وأبكى ثلاثين فله الجنة ، ومن بكى وأبكى عشرين فله الجنة ، ومن بكى وأبكى عشرة فله الجنة ، ومن بكى وأبكى واحداً فله الجنة ، ومن تباكى فله الجنة.
Muhammad ibn Muslim reported: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: "Indeed, Al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them) is with his Lord, Almighty and Glorious, watching over his camp and those martyrs who joined him. He looks at his visitors and knows them better than anyone else, recognizing their names, their fathers' names, their ranks, and positions with Allah, Almighty and Glorious, better than you know your own children. He sees those who weep for him and asks forgiveness for them. He also requests his fathers (peace be upon them) to ask forgiveness for them. He says: 'If my visitor knew what Allah has prepared for him, his joy would be greater than his sorrow, and any visitor will return without any sin upon them.'"
وعن محمد بن مسلم قال : سمعت أبا عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) يقول : إن الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) عند ربِّه عزَّ وجلَّ ، ينظر إلى معسكره ومن حلَّه من الشهداء معه ، وينظر إلى زوَّاره وهو أعرف بهم وبأسمائهم وأسماء آبائهم ، وبدرجاتهم ومنزلتهم عند الله عزَّ وجلَّ من أحدكم بولده ، وإنه ليرى من يبكيه فيستغفر له ، ويسأل آباءه ( عليهم السلام ) أن يستغفروا له ، ويقول : لو يعلم زائري ما أعدَّ الله له لكان فرحه أكثر من جزعه ، وإن زائره لينقلب وما عليه من ذنب.
Muhammad narrated from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) who said: Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them) used to say: Any believer whose eyes shed tears for the killing of Husayn ibn Ali such that the tears flow down his cheeks, Allah will set aside for him in Paradise rooms where he will reside for ages. And any believer whose eyes shed tears such that they flow down his cheeks due to any harm that befalls us from our enemy in this world, Allah will provide him with sincerity in Paradise. And any believer who suffers harm...
وعن محمد ، عن أبي جعفر ( عليه السلام ) قال : كان علي بن الحسين ( عليهما السلام ) يقول : أيما مؤمن دمعت عيناه لقتل الحسين بن علي دمعة حتى تسيل على خدِّه بوَّأه الله بها في الجنة غرفاً يسكنها أحقاباً ، وأيما مؤمن دمعت عيناه دمعاً حتى يسيل على خدّه لأذىً مسَّنا من عدوِّنا في الدنيا بوَّأه الله مبوَّأ صدق في الجنة ، وأيما مؤمن مسَّه أذىً

His eyes filled with tears until his tears streamed down his cheeks from the distress he was caused. May God avert harm from his face, and grant him safety from His wrath and the fire on the Day of Judgment.
فينا فدمعت عيناه حتى يسيل دمعه على خدّيه من مضاضة ما أوذي فينا صرف الله عن وجهه الأذى ، وآمنه يوم القيامة من سخطه والنار (1) .
Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: "Whoever recites a single verse of poetry about Hussain and cries, causing ten others to cry, will have Paradise for himself and for them. And whoever recites a verse about Hussain and cries, causing nine others to cry, both he and they will have Paradise." He continued to lower the number until he said: "And whoever recites a single verse about Hussain and cries—I think he said, or pretends to cry—will have Paradise."
وعن صالح بن عقبة ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : من أنشد في الحسين بيتاً من شعر فبكى وأبكى عشرة فله ولهم الجنة ، ومن أنشد في الحسين بيتاً فبكى وأبكى تسعة فله ولهم الجنة ، فلم يزل حتى قال : ومن أنشد في الحسين بيتاً فبكى ـ وأظنّه قال : أو تباكى ـ فله الجنة.
Misma' Kardin narrated: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said to me: "O Misma', you are from the people of Iraq. Do you not visit the grave of Hussein?" I replied: "No, I am a prominent man from the people of Basra, and among us are those who follow the whims of this caliph. Our enemies are many from the tribes, including the Nasibis and others, and I do not trust them not to report me to the sons of Sulayman, which would lead them to attack me." He said to me: "Do you not remember what was done to him?" I said: "Indeed I do." He said: "And you grieve?" I said: "By God, yes, and I become emotional about it to the point where my family sees its effects on me, and I abstain from food until it shows on my face." He said: "May God have mercy on your tears. Surely you are among those who are counted among the mourners for us, and those who rejoice for our joy, grieve for our sorrows, fear for our fears, and feel secure when we feel secure. Surely, you will see at your death and the presence of our forebears and their testament to the angel of death for you, and what they bring you in tidings that will delight your eyes before death. The angel of death will be more compassionate and merciful to you than a tender mother to her child."
وعن مسمع كردين قال : قال لي أبو عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) : يا مسمع ، أنت من أهل العراق ، أما تأتي قبر الحسين ؟ قلت : لا ، أنا رجل مشهور من أهل البصرة ، وعندنا من يتبع هوى هذا الخليفة ، وأعداؤنا كثيرة من أهل القبائل من النُصَّاب وغيرهم ، ولست آمنهم أن يرفعوا عليَّ عند ولد سليمان ، فيمثلون عليَّ ، قال لي : أفما تذكر ما صنع به ؟ قلت : بلى ، قال : فتجزع ؟ قلت : إي والله ، وأستعبر لذلك ، حتى يرى أهلي أثر ذلك عليَّ ، فأمتنع من الطعام حتى يستبين ذلك في وجهي ، قال : رحم الله دمعتك ، أما إنك من الذين يُعدّون في أهل الجزع لنا والذين يفرحون لفرحنا ، ويحزنون لحزننا ، ويخافون لخوفنا ، ويأمنون إذا أمنّا ، أما إنك سترى عند موتك وحضور آبائي لك ووصيّتهم ملك الموت بك ، وما يلقونك به من البشارة : ما تقرُّ به عينك قبل الموت ، فملك الموت أرقُّ عليك ، وأشدُّ رحمة لك من الأم الشفيقة على ولدها.
He said, "Then he began to weep and wept with him, and said: Praise be to Allah who preferred us over His creation with mercy, and singled us, the family of the house, with mercy. O Masma', indeed the earth and the heavens have wept since the killing of the Commander of the Faithful out of mercy for us, and what the angels have wept for us is even more, and the tears of the angels have not ceased since we were killed. And no one has wept out of mercy for us without Allah having mercy on them before the tear is shed."
قال : ثمَّ استعبر واستعبرت معه ، فقال : الحمد لله الذي فضَّلنا على خلقه بالرحمة ، وخصَّنا أهل البيت بالرحمة ، يا مسمع ، إن الأرض والسماء لتبكي منذ قتل أمير المؤمنين رحمة لنا ، وما بكى لنا من الملائكة أكثر ، وما رقأت دموع الملائكة منذ قتلنا ، وما بكى أحدٌ رحمة لنا ، ولما لقينا إلاَّ رحمه الله قبل أن تخرج الدمعة من

If his tears flow down his cheek, and a single drop of them falls into Hell, it would extinguish its heat, so that there would be no heat left. And the one whose heart is sore will find such joy at the time of his death that it will never leave his heart until he reaches us at the pond. Indeed, the Kawthar is delighted with our beloved ones when they come to it, to the extent that it gives them a taste of delights and food, which even they could not have longed for more.
عينه ، فإذا سال دموعه على خدِّه فلو أن قطرة من دموعه سقطت في جهنم لأطفأت حرَّها حتى لا يوجد لها حرّ ، وإن الموجع قلبه لنا ليفرح يوم يرانا عند موته فرحة لا تزال تلك الفرحة في قلبه حتى يرد علينا الحوض ، وإن الكوثر ليفرح بمحبِّنا إذا ورد عليه ، حتى إنه ليذيقه من ضروب الطعام ما لا يشتهي أن يصدر عنه.
O listener, one drink from it will quench your thirst forever, and you will never suffer afterwards. It is as refreshing as camphor, fragrant as musk, tastes like ginger, sweeter than honey, softer than butter, clearer than tears, and more aromatic than ambergris. It flows from Tasnim, and it passes through the rivers of paradise, flowing over beds of pearl and ruby. The cups there outnumber the stars in the sky, with a fragrance detectable from a thousand-year journey away. Their cups are made of gold, silver, and various precious stones. A scent emanates from the face of anyone who drinks from it, making them say: "I wish I could remain here, for I would never desire anything else instead, nor would I want to leave it."
يا مسمع ، من شرب منه شربة لم يظمأ بعدها أبداً ، ولم يشقَ بعدها أبداً ، وهو في برد الكافور ، وريح المسك ، وطعم الزنجبيل ، أحلى من العسل ، وألين من الزبد ، وأصفى من الدمع ، وأَذكى من العنبر ، يخرج من تسنيم ، ويمرُّ بأنهار الجنان ، تجري على رضراض الدرّ والياقوت ، فيه من القدحان أكثر من عدد نجوم السماء ، يوجد ريحه من مسيرة ألف عام ، قدحانه من الذهب والفضة وألوان الجوهر ، يفوح في وجه الشارب منه كل فائحة ، يقول الشارب منه : ليتني تُرِكْتُ ههنا لا أبغي بهذا بدلا ، ولا عنه تحويلا.
You shall drink from it, and our eyes weep only because we are blessed with looking at al-Kawthar, and I give to drink from it to those who love us. The one who drinks from it is given more pleasure, taste, and desire than what is given to them who is beneath us in love. On al-Kawthar stands the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) with a staff of firewood in his hand, with which he smashes our enemies. A man among them says, "I bear witness to the two testimonies!" He says, "Go to your Imam, so-and-so, and ask him to intercede for you." The man retorts, "The Imam you mention disowns me." He replies, "Go back and speak to the one whom you followed and put above creation, ask him, if he is the best of creation for you, to intercede for you, for the best of creation is worthy of not being rejected if interceded." The man pleads, "I perish from thirst," and he is met with, "May God increase your thirst and increase your drought."
أما إنك يا كردين ممن تُروى منه ، وما من عين بكت لنا إلاَّ نعمت بالنظر إلى الكوثر ، وسقيت منه من أحبَّنا ، فإن الشارب منه ليعطى من اللذّة والطعم والشهوة له أكثر مما يعطاه من هو دونه في حبِّنا ، وإن على الكوثر أمير المؤمنين ( عليه السلام ) وفي يده عصا من عوسج ، يحطم بها أعداءنا ، فيقول الرجل منهم : إني أشهد الشهادتين! فيقول : انطلق إلى إمامك فلان فاسأله أن يشفع لك ، فيقول : يتبَّرأ مني إمامي الذي تذكره ، فيقول : ارجع وراءك فقل للذي كنت تتولاَّه وتقدِّمه على الخلق ، فاسأله إذ كان عندك خير الخلق أن يشفع لك ، فإن خير الخلق حقيق أن لا يُرَدَّ إذا شُفِّع ، فيقول : إني أهلك عطشاً ، فيقول : زادك الله ظمأ ، وزادك الله عطشاً.
I said: "May my life be sacrificed for you. How is he able to reach the Fountain while others are not?" He replied: "He refrained from committing vile acts, abstained from cursing us when we are mentioned, and avoided the things that others dared to do."
قلت : جُعلت فداك ، وكيف يقدر على الدنو من الحوض ولم يقدر عليه غيره ؟ قال : وَرِعَ عن أشياء قبيحة ، وكفَّ عن شتمنا إذا ذُكرنا ، وترك أشياء اجترأ

...not out of love for her, nor out of passion towards her, but rather due to his intense dedication in worship and piety, and because he had preoccupied himself with matters other than people's talk. However, his heart is hypocritical, and his religion is deceitful, as he follows the path of deceit by aligning himself with those who mislead and giving precedence to past leaders above everyone else.
عليها غيره ، وليس ذلك لحبِّنا ، ولا لهوى منه ، ولكن ذلك لشدّة اجتهاده في عبادته وتديُّنه ، ولما قد شغل به نفسه عن ذكر الناس ، فأمَّا قلبه فمنافق ، ودينه النصب باتباع أهل النصب وولاية الماضين ، وتقدمة لهما على كل أحد (1) .
May God have mercy on Sayyid al-Humayri, as he says:
ولله درّ السيد الحميري عليه الرحمة إذ يقول :
A basin for them spans from Sana'a to
Ayla, its breadth even wider.
In it a sign is raised for guidance,
and the basin is filled with their water.
It overflows with his mercy like Kawthar,
white as silver or more pure.
Its pebbles are rubies and coral,
and pearls not touched by a finger.
Its plains are musk and its edges
shake with vibrant blossoms.
Green before the eyes, fresh
and brilliant yellow or brighter.
In it are pitchers and cups,
protected by the steadfast man.
Protected by the son of Abu Talib,
driven away like troublesome camels.
Its fragrance and flowers, their varieties
fragrant as a breeze stirs them.
A scent from paradise commanded,
departing with no return.
When they approach it to drink,
they are told: “Away with you, return!”
“At your exclusion seek a source
that quenches you or food that satisfies.”
This is for those who allied with the sons of Ahmed,
and followed no others.
Thus victory for those who drink from their basin,
and woe and disgrace to those denied.
حَوْضٌ له ما بَيْنَ صنعاءَ إلى
أَيلةَ (2) والعُرْضُ به أَوْسَعُ
يُنْصَبُ فيه عَلَمٌ للهدى
والحَوْضُ من مَاء له مُتْرَعُ
يفيضُ من رَحْمَتِهِ كَوْثَرٌ
أبيضُ كالفضَّةِ أو أنصعُ
حَصَاهُ ياقوتٌ وَمُرْجَانَةٌ
ولؤلؤٌ لم تَجْنِهِ إِصْبَعُ
بَطْحَاؤُه مِسْكٌ وَحَافَاتُهُ
يهتزُّ منها مُوْنِقٌ مُرْبِعُ
أَخْضَرُ ما دون الوَرَى نَاضِرٌ
وَفَاقِعٌ أَصْفَرُ أو أَنْصَعُ
فيه أباريقُ وَقِدْ حَانُهُ
يَذُبُّ عنها الرَّجُلُ الأَصْلَعُ
يَذُبُّ عنها ابنُ أبي طالب
ذَبَّاً كَجَرْبَا إِبل شرَّعُ
والعِطْرُ والريحانُ أنواعُهُ
زَاك وقد هبَّتْ به زَعْزَعُ
ريحٌ من الجنَّةِ مأمورةٌ
ذاهبةٌ ليس لها مَرْجِعُ
إذا دنوا منه لكي يشربوا
قيل لهم : تبّاً لكم فَارْجِعوا
دُونَكُمُ فالتمسوا مَنْهلا
يُرْويكُمُ أو مَطْعَماً يُشْبِعُ
هَذا لِمَنْ والى بني أحمد
ولم يَكُنْ غيرَهُمُ يَتْبَعُ
فالفوزُ للشاربِ من حَوْضِهِ
والويلُ والذُّلُّ لمن يُمْنَعُ (3)
Abu Harun al-Makfuf narrated from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) in a lengthy hadith:
وعن أبي هارون المكفوف قال : قال أبو عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) في حديث طويل :

For someone who remembers Al-Hussein and tears flow from their eyes the size of a fly's wing, their reward is with Allah the Almighty, and He will not be pleased for them with anything less than Paradise.
ومن ذكر الحسين عنده فخرج من عينيه من الدموع مقدار جناح ذباب كان ثوابه على الله عزَّ وجلَّ ، ولم يرض له بدون الجنة.
Abdullah ibn Bukair narrated in a long hadith: I performed Hajj with Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), and I asked, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, if we were to open the grave of Al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them), would there be anything left in his grave?" He replied, "O son of Bukair, what a significant question you ask! Indeed, Al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him) is with his father, mother, and brother in the abode of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and with them, they are provided for and delight in blessings. He is by the right side of the Throne, clinging to it, saying, 'O Lord, fulfill for me what You have promised me.' He indeed looks at his visitors, knowing them and their names, and the names of their fathers, and what is in their luggage better than one knows his own children."
"He looks at whoever weeps for him and seeks forgiveness for that person, and asks his father for forgiveness for them. He says: ‘O weeper, if you knew what Allah has prepared for you, you would rejoice more than you grieve.’ Indeed, he seeks forgiveness for them from all sins and wrongdoings."
وعن عبدالله بن بكير في حديث طويل قال : حججت مع أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) فقلت : يا ابن رسول الله ، لو نبش قبر الحسين بن علي ( عليهما السلام ) هل كان يصاب في قبره شيء ؟ فقال : يا ابن بكير ، ما أعظم مسائلك! إن الحسين بن علي ( عليه السلام ) مع أبيه وأمه وأخيه في منزل رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ومعه ، يُرزقون ويُحبرون ، وإنه لعن يمين العرش متعلِّق به ، يقول : يا ربِّ أنجز لي ما وعدتني ، وإنه لينظر إلى زوَّاره ، فهو أعرف بهم وبأسمائهم وأسماء آبائهم وما في رحالهم من أحدهم بولده ، وإنه لينظر إلى من يبكيه فيستغفر له ، ويسأل أباه الاستغفار له ، ويقول : أيُّها الباكي ، لو علمت ما أعدَّ الله لك لفرحت أكثر مما حزنت ، وإنه ليستغفر له من كل ذنب وخطيئة.
Al-Allamah Al-Majlisi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "I saw in some of the works of our scholars that it was narrated from Sayyid Ali Al-Husseini who said: I was residing near the shrine of my master Ali bin Musa Al-Ridha (peace be upon him) with a group of believers. On the tenth day of the month of Muharram, a man from among us began reciting the account of the martyrdom of Al-Hussein (peace be upon him). A narration was mentioned from Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) that stated: 'Whoever sheds tears over the tragedy of Al-Hussein, even if as tiny as the wing of a mosquito, Allah will forgive his sins, even if they are as numerous as the foam of the sea.'
Among us in the gathering was an ignorant person who pretended to possess knowledge but did not truly have it. He said, 'This is not true, and the intellect cannot accept it.' A heated debate ensued between us, and we dispersed from that gathering with him stubbornly insisting on the denial of the narration.
That night, the man slept and dreamed as if the Day of Judgment had arrived. People were gathered on a flat plain where you could see neither dip nor rise. The scales were set up, the bridge (sirat) was extended, the reckoning took place, the books were spread, the fires were ignited, and the gardens were adorned. He felt an intense heat and severe thirst and went searching for water but could not find it."
قال العلامة المجلسي عليه الرحمة : ورأيت في بعض مؤلَّفات أصحابنا أنه حكي عن السيِّد علي الحسيني قال : كنت مجاوراً في مشهد مولاي علي بن موسى الرضا ( عليه السلام ) مع جماعة من المؤمنين ، فلمَّا كان اليوم العاشر من شهر عاشور ابتدأ رجل من أصحابنا يقرأ مقتل الحسين ( عليه السلام ) ، فوردت رواية عن الباقر ( عليه السلام ) أنه قال : من ذرفت عيناه على مصاب الحسين ولو مثل جناح البعوضة غفر الله له ذنوبه ولو كانت مثل زبد البحر ، وكان في المجلس معنا جاهل مركَّب يدّعي العلم ولا يعرفه ، فقال : ليس هذا بصحيح ، والعقل لا يعتقده ، وكثر البحث بيننا وافترقنا عن ذلك المجلس ، وهو مصرٌّ على العناد في تكذيب الحديث ، فنام ذلك الرجل تلك الليلة ، فرأى في منامه كأن القيامة قد قامت ، وحشر الناس في صعيد صفصف ، لا ترى فيها عوجاً ولا أمتاً ، وقد نُصبت الموازين ، وامتدَّ الصراط ، ووضع الحساب ، ونشرت الكتب ، وأسعرت النيران ، وزخرفت الجنان ، واشتدَّ الحر عليه ، وإذا هو قد عطش عطشاً شديداً ، وبقي يطلب الماء فلا يجده.
