While I was plastering the doors, suddenly cries rose up from the outskirts of Kufa. I turned to a servant who was with us and said: What is this? Why do I see Kufa in such an uproar? He said: Right now they have brought the head of a rebel who rose up against Yazid. I said: Who is this rebel? He said: Al-Hussein, son of Ali (peace be upon them). He said: I left the servant where he was and slapped my own face until I feared my eyes would be lost. I washed my hands of the plaster and went out from the back of the palace, coming to al-Kunas. While I stood there, the people awaiting the arrival of the captives and the heads, suddenly about forty litters came forward, carried upon forty camels, bearing the womenfolk and the women and the children of Fatima (peace be upon her). And there was Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them) on a camel without a saddle, the veins of his neck dripping blood, and despite this he was weeping and saying:
O wicked nation, may no rain fall upon your dwelling
O nation that did not honor our grandfather in us
If only we, with the Messenger of God gathering us
On the Day of Resurrection — what then would you say?
You drive us upon the saddles, stripped bare
As though we never established among you a faith
He said: The people of Kufa began handing the children upon the litters some dates, bread, and walnuts. Then Umm Kulthum cried out to them and said: O people of Kufa, charity is forbidden to us! And she began taking it from the children's hands and mouths and casting it to the ground. He said: All this while the people wept over what had befallen them.
The greatest of what grieves and is laid deep within the breast
is a burning anguish beside which the sting of embers is slight
That her enemies gave alms to her in gloating spite
for what had befallen her — with bread, with walnuts, and with dates
Then Umm Kulthum thrust her head out from the litter and said to them: Hush, O people of Kufa! Your men kill us, and your women weep over us? Then the Judge between us and you is God, on the Day when judgment is decided.
While she was addressing them, suddenly an uproar rose, and there they were, bringing the heads, foremost among them the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) — a radiant, moon-like head, the most resembling of all creation to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family).
(452)
His beard was like the blackness of jet, the dye having faded from it, his face the orb of a rising moon, and the spear
swayed it right and left. Zainab (peace be upon her) turned and saw the head of her brother, and she struck her forehead against the front of the litter until we saw the blood flowing from beneath her veil. She gestured toward it with a piece of cloth and began to say:
O crescent moon, when you had grown to fullness
your eclipse seized you, and you set away
Never did I imagine, O brother of my heart
that this was decreed and written down
O my brother, speak to little Fatima
for her heart has nearly melted away
O my brother, do you not see Ali a captive
with orphanhood, unable to ride?
Whenever they wound him with their blows, he calls to you
with tears pouring down in streams
How humiliating it is for the orphan when he calls
upon his father and does not see him answer (1)
Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may he be honored, said: Bashir ibn Khuzaym al-Asadi said: I looked at Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), that day, and by God I never saw a modest woman more eloquent than she, as though she spoke from the very tongue of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). She gestured to the people to be silent, and the breaths held still, and the bells fell quiet. Then she said: Praise be to God, and blessings upon my father Muhammad and his good and chosen family. Now then, O people of Kufa, O people of deceit and treachery, do you weep? Then may your tears never cease, and may your wailing never be stilled! Your likeness is but as that of her who unravels her yarn into shreds after its strength, taking your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves. Is there anything in you but arrogance and filth, breasts full of malice, the flattery of slave-girls, and the spite of enemies — or like greenery upon a dunghill, or silver upon a grave? Evil indeed is what your souls have sent ahead for you, for God is angry with you, and in the torment you shall abide.
Do you weep? Do you sob? Yes, by God, weep much and laugh little, for you have carried off

its disgrace and its shame, and you shall never wash it away with any cleansing thereafter. And how could you wash away the killing of the descendant of the seal of prophethood, the mine of the message, the master of the youth of Paradise, the refuge of your bewilderment, the shelter in your calamity, the beacon of your proof, the leader of your way? Evil indeed is the burden you bear! Away with you, and may you be cast far off! The endeavor has failed, the hands have perished, the bargain is lost, and you have incurred wrath from God, and humiliation and wretchedness have been stamped upon you.
Woe to you, O people of Kufa! Do you know what liver of the Messenger of God you have torn? What sacred kinswoman of his you have brought out into the open? What blood of his you have shed? What sanctity of his you have violated? You have committed an act monstrous, hideous, black, and foul (and in some versions: ragged and disfigured), filling the earth or filling the sky! Do you marvel that the sky has rained blood? Yet the torment of the Hereafter is more disgraceful, and you shall not be helped. Let not this respite make you reckless, for He is not hastened by haste, nor does He fear the loss of vengeance, and indeed your Lord is ever watchful.
The narrator said: By God, I saw the people that day bewildered and weeping, having put their hands to their mouths. And I saw an old man standing beside me weeping until his beard was drenched, saying: By my father and mother — your elders are the best of elders, your youth the best of youth, your women the best of women, and your lineage the best of lineage; it is never humiliated nor overcome.
Zayd ibn Musa narrated: My father told me, from my grandfather (peace be upon him), who said: Fatima the Younger gave a sermon after she returned from Karbala, saying: Praise be to God as numberless as the grains of sand and pebbles, as weighty as the Throne down to the earth. I praise Him, believe in Him, and rely upon Him. I bear witness that there is no god but God alone, without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger (peace be upon him and his family), and that his children were slaughtered on the bank of the Euphrates, without any blood-debt or wrong on their part. O God, I seek refuge in You from fabricating lies against You, or from saying about You contrary to what You revealed concerning the taking of pledges for His successor Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), whose right was usurped, who was killed without sin, just as his son was killed yesterday — in a house among the houses of God, in which were people Muslim by their tongues. Ruin to their heads! They did not defend him from any injustice in his life, nor

at his death, until You took him to You, of praiseworthy character, gentle of nature, known for his virtues, renowned in his ways, whom — O God — no blame of a blamer and no reproach of a reproacher could turn aside in Your cause. You guided him — O God — to Islam while young, and his virtues were praised when grown. He never ceased to be sincere to You and to Your Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) until You took him to You, abstinent in the world, not coveting it, desiring the Hereafter, striving for You in Your path. You were pleased with him, chose him, and guided him to a straight path.
Now then, O people of Kufa, O people of cunning, treachery, and arrogance: we are a household whom God has tested through you and has tested you through us, and He made our trial good, and placed His knowledge with us, and His understanding with us. We are the vessel of His knowledge, the container of His understanding and wisdom, and His proof upon the earth, in His lands, for His servants. God has honored us with His honor and favored us through His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) above many of those He created, with a clear preference. Yet you called us liars and disbelievers, and you deemed fighting us lawful and our property fair plunder, as though we were the children of Turks and Kabul — just as you killed our grandfather yesterday, while your swords drip with our blood, we the People of the House, out of an ancient grudge. For that your eyes were gladdened and your hearts rejoiced — a slander against God on your part, and a plot you have plotted; but God is the best of planners. So let not your souls draw you to rejoicing over the blood of ours you have spilled and the wealth of ours your hands have seized. For the grievous misfortunes and the great calamities that have befallen us were in a Book before We brought them into being; that, for God, is easy — so that you may not grieve over what has escaped you nor rejoice over what He has given you. And God loves not any arrogant boaster.
Ruin to you! Await the curse and the torment, for it is as though it has already descended upon you, and punishments have rained down upon you from the sky in succession, so that He will destroy you with torment and make some of you taste the violence of others. Then you shall abide forever in painful torment on the Day of Resurrection, for the wrong you have done us. Surely the curse of God be upon the wrongdoers.
Woe to you! Do you know which hand of yours stabbed us? Which soul went forth to fight us? On which feet did you march toward us, seeking to make war upon us? By God, your hearts have hardened, your livers have grown coarse, your hearts have been sealed, your hearing and sight have been stamped shut. Satan has enticed you and given you false hope,

and placed over your sight a veil, so that you are not guided. So ruin to you, O people of Kufa! What heritage of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) lies upon you, what claim against you, for the treachery you committed against his brother Ali ibn Abi Talib, my grandfather, and against his sons and his good and chosen progeny (peace be upon them)? Yet a boaster boasted of that and said:
We have slain Ali and the sons of Ali
with Indian swords and with spears
We took their women captive as Turks are taken captive
and we clashed against them — and what a clashing!
May dust and gravel fill your mouth, O you who speak! You boast of killing a people whom God purified, whom God cleansed, and from whom He removed all impurity. So choke down your words and crouch — as your father crouched — for each man has only what he has earned and what his hands have sent forth. Do you envy us — woe to you — for the favor God has granted us?
What is our fault if our seas surge in their season
while your sea lies still, scarcely covering the swallowed plea?
That is the bounty of God; He gives it to whom He wills. And God is the possessor of great bounty. And he for whom God has made no light, for him there is no light.
He said: Then the voices rose in weeping and wailing, and they said: Enough, O daughter of the pure ones! You have set our hearts ablaze and kindled our breasts. So she fell silent.
He said: And Umm Kulthum, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), gave a sermon that day from behind her veil, raising her voice in weeping, and said: O people of Kufa, disgrace be upon you! What is wrong with you, that you abandoned Hussein and killed him, plundered his wealth and inherited it, took his women captive and afflicted them? Ruin to you, and may you be cast far off! Woe to you! Do you know what calamity has stricken you? What burden you have loaded upon your backs? What blood you have shed? What noble woman you have assaulted? What children you have stripped bare? What wealth you have plundered? You killed the best of men after the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and mercy has been torn from your hearts. Indeed, the party of God are the victorious, and the party of Satan are the losers. Then she said:
You killed my brother defenseless — so woe to your mother
You shall be requited with a fire whose heat blazes high
You shed blood whose shedding God had forbidden
and which the Quran forbade, and then Muhammad
(456)
Then receive the tidings of the Fire, for tomorrow you
shall surely be in Saqar, in truth, abiding forever
And I shall weep throughout my life for my brother
for the best of all who shall be born after the Prophet
with abundant tears, ever-flowing, wiped away
upon my cheek, never to dry
The narrator said: The people clamored in weeping and lamentation, and the women loosed their hair, placed dust upon their heads, scratched their faces, struck their cheeks, and called out woe and ruin. The men wept. No greater number of weeping women and men had ever been seen than on that day.
Then Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) gestured to the people to be silent, and they fell silent. He rose to his feet, praised God and extolled Him, made mention of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and invoked blessings upon him. Then he said: O people, whoever knows me knows me, and whoever does not know me, I shall make myself known to him. I am Ali, son of al-Hussein, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them). I am the son of him whose sanctity was violated, whose blessings were stripped away, whose wealth was plundered, and whose family was taken captive. I am the son of the one slaughtered on the bank of the Euphrates, without blood-debt or wrong. I am the son of the one killed defenseless — and that suffices as honor.
O people, I adjure you by God: do you know that you wrote to my father and deceived him, that you gave him your covenant, your pledge, and your oath of allegiance, and then fought him? Ruin to what you have sent ahead for your souls, and disgrace to your judgment! With what eye will you look upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) when he says to you: You killed my progeny, you violated my sanctity, so you are not of my nation?
The narrator said: The voices rose from every direction, and they said to one another: You are destroyed, and you do not know it! He (peace be upon him) said: May God have mercy on the man who accepts my counsel and keeps my admonition concerning God, His Messenger, and his household, for in the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) we have a goodly example. They all said: We — every one of us, O son of the Messenger of God — are listening, obedient, keeping faith with your trust, neither forsaking you nor turning away from you. So command us your command, may God have mercy on you, for we are at war with whoever wars against you and at peace with whoever is at peace with you. We shall seize Yazid — may God curse him — and disavow whoever wronged you. He (peace be upon him) said: Far, far from it, O treacherous,
(457)
deceitful ones! A barrier has been set between you and the desires of your souls. Do you wish to come to me as you came to my forefathers before? No, by the Lord of the swift-moving stars! For the wound has not yet healed. My father, God's blessings be upon him, was killed yesterday, and his household with him, and I have not forgotten the bereavement of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), nor the bereavement of my father and the sons of my father. Its grief is between my jaws, its bitterness between my throat and gullet, its choking flows through the bedding of my breast. My request is that you be neither for us nor against us. Then he said:
No wonder that Hussein was slain — his elder
was better than Hussein and nobler still
So rejoice not, O people of Kufa, in that
which befell Hussein — that was the greater
A slain man on the river bank — my soul be his ransom
the reward of him who slew him is the fire of Hell
Then he said: We are content with you, head for head — neither a day for us nor a day against us.
The narrator said: Then Ibn Ziyad sat in the palace to receive the people and gave general permission to enter. The head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was brought and set before him, and the women and children of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) were brought in to him. Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), sat disguised, so he asked about her and was told: This is Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him). He turned to her and said: Praise be to God who has disgraced you and proven your tale false. She said: Only the corrupt is disgraced, and only the wicked is proven false — and that is someone other than us. Ibn Ziyad said: How did you find what God did with your brother and your household? She said: I saw nothing but beauty. These were a people for whom death was decreed, so they went forth to their resting places. And God will gather you and them together, and you shall dispute and contend; then see who prevails on that day. May your mother be bereft of you, O son of Marjana!
The narrator said: Ibn Ziyad grew angry, as if he meant to harm her. Amr ibn Hurayth said to him: She is a woman, and a woman is not held to account for anything she says. Ibn Ziyad said to her: God has healed my heart of your tyrant Hussein and the rebellious mutineers of your household. She said: By my life, you have killed my elder, cut down my branch, and uprooted my root. If this is what heals you, then you have been healed. Ibn Ziyad said: This one speaks in rhymed prose! By my life, her father was a poet and a master of rhymed prose. She said: O son of Ziyad, what has a woman to do with rhymed prose?

Then Ibn Ziyad turned to Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them) and said: Who is this? It was said: Ali ibn al-Hussein. He said: Did not God kill Ali ibn al-Hussein? Ali (peace be upon him) said: I had a brother called Ali ibn al-Hussein whom the people killed. He said: Rather, God killed him.
Ali (peace be upon him) said: God takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die in their sleep. Ibn Ziyad said: You have the audacity to answer me back? Take him away and strike off his neck! His aunt Zainab heard this and said: O son of Ziyad, you have left none of us. If you are resolved to kill him, then kill me with him. Ali (peace be upon him) said to his aunt: Be silent, O aunt, that I may speak to him. Then he turned and said: Do you threaten me with death, O son of Ziyad? Do you not know that killing is our custom and martyrdom our honor?
Then Ibn Ziyad ordered Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and his family taken to a house beside the Grand Mosque. Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), said: Let no Arab woman enter upon us except a slave-woman's daughter or a bondmaid, for they were taken captive as we were taken captive. Then Ibn Ziyad ordered the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) to be paraded through the streets of Kufa. How excellent is the poet who said:
The head of the daughter's son of Muhammad and his successor

and the Muslims looking on and listening
none among them denying, none grieving
The eyes were blinded by the sight of you
and your loss has deafened every ear that hears
You have awakened eyelids — and you were their sleep
and put to sleep an eye that never slept for you
No meadow but wished it were
a grave for you, and the line of your tomb a resting place (1)

The Second Gathering, of the Twelfth Day
On the Virtues of Zainab (peace be upon her), Her Patience and Her Struggle
It is stated in the book The Passing of the Lady Zainab the Elder (peace be upon her) by the eminent scholar Sheikh Faraj Al Imran, may mercy be upon him — and it is excerpted from the book The Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) by Sheikh Jafar al-Naqdi, may mercy be upon him — he said: She (peace be upon her) grew up with a goodly upbringing, complete, virtuous, and learned, from a tree whose root is firm and whose branch is in the heavens. She was of immense forbearance and noble character, possessed of eloquence and lucidity, the springs of generosity and bounty flowing from her hand. It suffices her as honor that she was a branch of the tree of the household of prophethood, whom God Most High praised in His mighty Book.
From al-Naysaburi in his Alawite treatise: Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon her), was in her eloquence, her lucidity, her asceticism, and her devotion like her father al-Murtada (peace be upon him) and her mother al-Zahra (peace be upon her). How excellent is Sheikh al-Naqdi when he says:
She resembled the best of mankind in loftiness and glory
and Haydar in eloquent speech
and Fatima in chastity, piety, and majesty
and in character, and in the nobility of qualities
Nurtured in infallibility, pure and good
surpassing in attributes and in deeds
She was like the Imams in her guidance
and in delivering mankind from error
She was in the place of prayer when she whispered
and called upon God with flowing tears
She related from her mother al-Zahra knowledge
by which she reached the limit of perfection
For were it not for her mother al-Zahra, she would have surpassed
the women of the worlds, beyond all dispute

the city of prophetic knowledge, devoted afterward at its Alawite gate, nourished on its milk from her mother the truthful, the pure, peace of God be upon her. She passed a span of her lifetime with the two Imams, the two grandsons, who fed her knowledge mouthful by mouthful. So she drew from the depths of the knowledge of the family of Muhammad and the depths of their virtues — virtues acknowledged even by their bitterest enemy, the tyrant Yazid, in his saying about Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him): He is of a household who were fed knowledge mouthful by mouthful. And her nephew Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) testified to her with these words: You, by the grace of God, are learned without being taught, and understanding without being instructed — meaning (peace be upon him) that the source of her knowledge was of the same kind granted to the men of her exalted household, poured upon her by inspiration. In the tradition it is said: No servant has been sincere to God Most High for forty mornings but that the springs of wisdom flow from his heart upon his tongue. There is no doubt that the pure Zainab was sincere to God all her life — so what do you suppose flowed from her heart upon her tongue of the springs of wisdom?
It is apparent from the eminent al-Darbandi and others that she (peace be upon her) possessed the knowledge of fates and afflictions, like a number of the companions of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), among them Maytham al-Tammar and Rushayd al-Hajari and others.
In al-Tiraz al-Mudhahhab it is said that the inner states of Zainab and her spiritual stations were such that it was said of her: her virtues, her excellences, her qualities, and her splendor follow upon those of her mother, second only to her. Ibn Inaba said in Ansab al-Talibiyyin: Zainab the Elder, daughter of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), her kunya was Umm al-Hasan; she narrates from her mother Fatima al-Zahra, daughter of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family).
The eminent scholar Sayyid Nur al-Din al-Jaza'iri said in his Persian book titled al-Khasa'is al-Zaynabiyya, as translated from certain books: Zainab had a gathering in her house during the days of her father's residence (peace be upon him) in Kufa, and she would expound the Quran to the women.
In the book Balaghat al-Nisa by Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur, he said: Ahmad ibn Jafar ibn Sulayman al-Hashimi told me, saying: Zainab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him), used to say:
(461)
Whoever desires that creation not be his intercessors before God, let him praise Him. Have you not heard their saying? God hears the one who praises Him. So be God's deputy by His power over you, and be ashamed before Him for His nearness to you.
Sheikh al-Tabarsi, may mercy be upon him, said: Zainab (peace be upon her) narrated many reports from her mother al-Zahra (peace be upon her). And from the pillar of the traditionists: Zainab the Elder used to narrate from her mother, her father, and her two brothers. Among those who narrated from her were Ibn Abbas, Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), Abdullah ibn Jafar, Fatima the Younger daughter of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and others.
In Maqatil al-Talibiyyin by Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani: Zainab al-Aqila, daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), and her mother was Fatima, daughter of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). Al-Aqila is the one from whom Ibn Abbas narrated the speech of Fatima (peace be upon her) concerning Fadak, for he said: Our aqila, Zainab daughter of Ali (peace be upon her), told me.
The eminent, most august scholar Mulla Muhammad Hasan al-Qazwini said in his book titled Riyad al-Ahzan wa Hada'iq al-Ashjan: From the traditions of the People of the House, the grandeur of the standing of Zainab the Elder, daughter of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), her dignity, and her steadfastness are evident beyond any addition — so much so that her brother entrusted to her what he entrusted before his martyrdom. And out of the perfection of her knowledge, the abundance of her learning, the goodness of her roots, and the purity of her character, she resembled her mother, the mistress of women, Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her), in all of that, and in modesty and bashfulness, and her father (peace be upon him) in strength of heart in adversity, firmness in calamities, patience in afflictions, the courage inherited from her qualities, and the awe transmitted from her traits.
From al-Saduq Muhammad ibn Babawayh, may his resting place be blessed: Zainab (peace be upon her) held a special deputyship on behalf of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and the people would refer to her in matters of the lawful and the unlawful until Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) recovered from his illness.
As for her asceticism (peace be upon her), it suffices in proof of it what is narrated from Imam al-Sajjad: that she (peace be upon her) never stored away anything from her day for her tomorrow, ever. And in the book Jannat al-Khulud, what means: she was

Zainab the Elder, in eloquence, asceticism, governance, and courage, the equal of her father and her mother. For the ordering of the affairs of the People of the House (peace be upon them) — indeed of the Hashimites — after the martyrdom of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was by her judgment and her management.
As for her devotion (peace be upon her): she follows upon her mother al-Zahra (peace be upon her). She would spend most of her nights in night-prayer and the recitation of the Quran. In Muthir al-Ahzan by the eminent Sheikh Sharif al-Jawahiri (may his secret be sanctified): Fatima daughter of al-Hussein (peace be upon her) said: As for my aunt Zainab, she remained standing throughout that night — that is, the tenth of Muharram — in her prayer niche, imploring her Lord. No eye of ours rested, nor any wailing of ours fell silent.
From the eminent al-Na'ini al-Burujirdi: that al-Hussein (peace be upon him), when he bade his sister Zainab his final farewell, said to her: O my sister, do not forget me in the night supererogatory prayer. And one of the people of virtue said: that she (peace be upon her) never abandoned her night vigil to God Most High throughout her lifetime, even on the night of the eleventh of Muharram.
It is narrated from Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) that he said: I saw her that night praying while seated. And one of the early scholars narrated from Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) that he said: My aunt Zainab used to perform her prayers, the obligatory and the supererogatory, standing, while the people drove us from Kufa to Syria; but at some of the stopping-places she prayed seated. I asked her the reason for that, and she said: I pray seated from the severity of hunger and weakness over these three nights, for she would divide whatever food fell to her among the children — since the people gave each one of us a single loaf of bread in the day and night.
From the eminent al-Na'ini al-Burujirdi, from one of the reliable maqtal accounts, from our master al-Sajjad (peace be upon him), that he said: My aunt Zainab, despite those calamities and trials descending upon her on our way

Isma'il ibn Sahl said: One of our companions told me — and he asked me to keep his name secret — he said: I was with al-Rida (peace be upon him) when Ali ibn Abi Hamza, Ibn al-Sarraj, and Ibn al-Makari came in to him. Ibn Abi Hamza said to him: What has your father done? He said: He has passed on. He said: Passed on in death? He said: Yes. He said: To whom did he entrust the covenant? He said: To me. He said: So you are an Imam, obedience to whom is obligatory by God? He said: Yes. Ibn al-Sarraj and Ibn al-Makari said: By God, he has given you control over himself! He said: Woe to you! And how have I given control? Do you want me to come to Baghdad and say to Harun: I am an Imam whose obedience is obligatory? By God, that is not incumbent upon me. I only said that to you because of what has reached me of your disagreement and the dispersal of your affair, so that your secret would not fall into the hands of your enemy. Ibn Abi Hamza said to him: You have made manifest something that none of your forefathers ever made manifest or spoke of. He said: Indeed, the best of my forefathers, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), spoke of it. When God Most High commanded him to warn his nearest kinsfolk, he gathered forty men of his household and said to them: I am the Messenger of God to you. The most vehement of them in denying him and inciting against him was his uncle Abu Lahab. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to them: If a scratch wounds me, then I am no prophet. This was the first sign of prophethood He devised for you. And I say: If Harun wounds me with a single scratch, then I am no Imam. This is the first sign of the Imamate I devise for you. Ali said to him: We have narrated from your forefathers that the affair of an Imam is tended only by an Imam like him. Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said to him: Then tell me about al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) — was he an Imam or not an Imam? He said: He was an Imam. He said: Then who tended his affair? He said: Ali ibn al-Hussein. He (peace be upon him) said: And where was Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him)? He said: He was imprisoned in the hands of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad in Kufa.

He said: He went out without their knowing, until he tended his father's affair, then he returned. Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said to him: The one who enabled Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) to come to Karbala and tend his father's affair is the same who enables the master of this affair to come to Baghdad and tend his father's affair and then return — being neither in prison nor in captivity. Ali said to him: We have narrated that the Imam does not pass on until he sees his offspring. He said: Then Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: Have you not narrated in this tradition anything other than this? He said: No. He said: Indeed, by God, you have narrated it — except for al-Qa'im — yet you do not know what it means or why it was said. Ali said to him: Indeed, by God, that is in the tradition. Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said to him: Woe to you! How have you dared to take a thing and abandon part of it? Then he said: O Sheikh, fear God and be not among those who turn people away from the religion of God Most High. (1)
Ibn Nama al-Hilli, may mercy be upon him, narrated in Muthir al-Ahzan, from Ibn Aisha, who said: Sulayman ibn Qutayba al-Adawi, a client of Banu Tamim, passed through Karbala three days after the killing of al-Hussein (peace be upon him). He looked at the places where they fell, leaned upon an Arabian horse of his, and composed:
I passed by the dwellings of the family of Muhammad
and I did not see them as they had been when they were inhabited
Do you not see that the sun has become sickly
for the loss of Hussein, and the lands shudder?
They were a hope, then they became a calamity
great indeed grew those calamities, and grievous
Qays asks of us, and we give to its poor
yet Qays kills us when the sandal slips
And with Ghani lies a drop of our blood
we shall demand it of them one day, wherever it lies
May God not set far the dwellings and their people
even though they came to be emptied of them against their will
For the slain one of al-Taff, of the family of Hashim
humbled the necks of the Muslims, and they were humbled
The sky has wailed, weeping for his loss
and our stars lamented over him and prayed (2)
It is stated in Maqtal al-Hussein (peace be upon him) by Sayyid Abd al-Razzaq al-Muqarram, may mercy be upon him: And when there came
