the bonds! By my father, the one who is not absent that he might be hoped for, nor wounded that he might be treated! By my father, the one for whom my soul is ransom! By my father, the one who grieved until he passed away! By my father, the thirsty one until he died! By my father, the one whose grey hairs drip with blood! By my father, the one whose grandfather is the Messenger of the God of heaven! By my father, the one who is the grandson of the Prophet of guidance! By my father, Muhammad the Chosen! By my father, Khadija the Great! By my father, Ali the well-pleasing! By my father, Fatima al-Zahra! By my father, the one for whom the sun was turned back until he prayed! The narrator said: By God, she made every enemy and every friend weep.
Then Sukayna, daughter of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), embraced the body of her father, and a group of Bedouins gathered until they dragged her away from him (1). How excellent are the words of al-Sayyid Rida al-Hindi, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
She set out to fulfill from his farewell a longing,
but the whip of Shimr refused to let her bid him farewell.
So she parted from him — yet his head was with her,
and he vanished from her — yet her heart was with him (2).
Then she (peace be upon her) traveled this sorrowful journey with a grieving heart, a broken spirit, weeping eyes, a wasted body, and trembling limbs. She had parted from the dearest of people to her and the most beloved to her, surrounded by widowed women and bereaved mothers, and children crying out from hunger and thirst, encircled by the vile folk who had slain her household, oppressed her family, and plundered her caravan — such as Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan, Zajr ibn Qays, Sinan ibn Anas, Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi, Harmala ibn Kahil, Hajjar ibn Abjar, and their like — may God curse them — those in whose hearts God created no mercy. So whenever her eyes wept, the whips fell upon her, and when she cried for her brother, the harsh hands struck her. Thus was this journey of hers (3).
How excellent are the words of one of the poets concerning her farewell to al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and her departure from Karbala:
O my guardian veil, in God's protection —
how grievous is our departure while your body lies forsaken!

I bade you farewell, the Sufficient One, and there have been closed before me
all paths of counsel — what shall I do with you?
They marched off with her, while the eye watched over him, and though
veiled from sight, her heart remained, gazing back.

I shall never forget — no, by God — Zainab, when she walked,
she, the dignified, toward him with hurried steps,
calling out to him, her heart full of sorrows,
her eyes pouring forth flowing tears:
O my dear brother, why do you turn away from your daughters,
while all of them can be seen and heard by you?
O my dear brother, you never accustomed me to your coldness,
so why do you shun me and shun those with me?
Grant a kind reply, O Hussein — do you not see
Shimr the obscene with his whip has broken my ribs?
Then he answered her from atop the towering spear:
The decree is fulfilled by what has come to pass, so be patient.
Take charge of the orphans' state, and look —
what I would have done to protect them, so do you do.

The Second Gathering, of the eleventh day
Concerning those who saw the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family)
after the slaying of Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
The narrator said: Abd Allah ibn Rabah the judge asked a blind man about his blindness, and he said: I had been present at Karbala but did not fight, then I slept and saw a fearsome figure who said to me: Answer the Messenger of God! I said: I have no strength. So he dragged me to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and I found him grieving, with a spear in his hand, before him a leather mat spread out, and an angel standing before him holding a sword of fire, striking the necks of the people, and the fire fell upon them and burned them, then they were brought back to life and he slew them again, thus. I said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God; by God, I struck no one with a sword, nor stabbed with a spear, nor shot an arrow. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: Did you not swell the throng? Then he handed me over, and took from a basin containing blood and anointed my eyes
(438)
with that blood, and my eyes were burned. When I awoke, I was blind (1).
Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may mercy be upon him, narrated in the book al-Malhuf, as did Ibn Shahr Ashub and others, from Abd Allah ibn Rabah the judge, who said: I met a blind man who had witnessed the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him). He was asked about his sight, and he said: I was present at his slaying as the tenth of ten, except that I stabbed no one with a spear, struck no one with a sword, and shot no arrow. When he was killed I returned to my dwelling, prayed the late evening prayer, and slept. Then someone came to me in my sleep and said: Answer the Messenger of God! I said: What is there between him and me? So he seized me by my collar and dragged me to him, and there was the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) seated in an open plain, his arms bared, holding a spear, and an angel standing before him with a sword of fire in his hand, slaying my nine companions. Whenever he struck a blow, their souls blazed into fire. I drew near him and knelt before him, and said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God. But he did not return my greeting, and remained silent for a long while. Then he raised his head and said: O enemy of God, you violated my sanctity, slew my offspring, did not honor my right, and did this and did that. I said: O Messenger of God, I struck no one with a sword, nor stabbed with a spear, nor shot an arrow. He said: You speak truly, but you swelled the throng. Draw near to me! So I drew near, and there was a basin filled with blood. He said to me: This is the blood of my son al-Hussein. Then he anointed my eyes with that blood, and I awoke, and to this hour I see nothing (2).
It is narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib: When my master and lord al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was martyred, and the people performed the pilgrimage the following year, I went in to Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and said to him: O my master, the pilgrimage has drawn near; what do you command me? He said: Carry out your intention and make the pilgrimage. So I performed the pilgrimage, and while I was circling the Kaaba, there was a man with severed hands, his face like a patch of dark night, clinging to the coverings of the Kaaba, saying: O God, Lord of this Sacred House, forgive me — though I do not think You will do so,

and even were the dwellers of Your heavens and Your earth and all that You have created to intercede for me, my crime is too great.
Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib said: I and the people were diverted from the circling, until the people gathered around him and we crowded upon him. We said: Woe to you! Even were you Iblis, it would not befit you to despair of God's mercy. Who are you? And what is your sin? He wept and said: O people, I know best my own self and my sin and what I have committed. We said to him: Tell us of it. He said: I was a camel-driver for Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him) when he set out from Medina to Iraq. I used to see that when he wished to perform ablution for prayer, he would place his trousers beside me, and I would see a drawstring that dazzled the eyes with the beauty of its radiance, and I wished it could be mine. Until we reached Karbala, and al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed while it was still with him. So I buried myself in a place in the earth, and when night fell, I came out from my place and saw from that battlefield a light, not darkness, a day, not night, and the slain cast upon the face of the earth. Then, in my wickedness and wretchedness, I remembered the drawstring, and said: By God, I shall seek out al-Hussein, hoping the drawstring is in his trousers, that I may take it. I kept looking at the faces of the slain until I came to al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and found him fallen upon his face, a body without a head, his light shining, soaked in his blood, the winds blowing dust over him. I said: This, by God, is al-Hussein. I looked at his trousers as I used to see them, and drew near him, and stretched out my hand toward the drawstring to take it — but he had tied it in many knots. I kept undoing them until I had loosened one knot, then he stretched out his right hand and grasped the drawstring, and I could not pull his hand away from it nor reach it. The accursed soul tempted me to seek something with which to cut off his hands, and I found a piece of a broken sword lying about. I took it, leaned upon his hand, and kept sawing until I severed it from his wrist. Then I moved it away from the drawstring, and stretched out my hand to undo it, but he stretched out his left hand and grasped it, and I could not take it. So I took the piece of sword and kept sawing until I severed it from the drawstring, and stretched out my hand toward the drawstring to take it — when the earth quaked and the sky shook, and there was a great upheaval, weeping and crying out, and a voice saying: O my son! O slain one! O slaughtered one!

O Hussein! O stranger! O my son, they have killed you while not knowing you, and they who drank water denied it to you.
When I saw this, I fell unconscious and threw myself among the slain. Then there appeared three men and a woman, with throngs standing around them, and the earth was filled with the forms of people and the wings of angels. One of them was saying: O my son, O Hussein, may your grandfather and your father and your brother and your mother be your ransom. And there was al-Hussein (peace be upon him), seated with his head upon his body, saying: At your service, O my grandfather, O Messenger of God; O my father, O Commander of the Faithful; O my mother, O Fatima al-Zahra; O my brother, slain by poison — upon you all be peace from me. Then he wept and said: O grandfather, they have killed — by God — our men; O grandfather, they have stripped — by God — our women; O grandfather, they have plundered — by God — our caravan; O grandfather, they have slaughtered — by God — our children; O grandfather, it grieves you — by God — to see our condition and what the unbelievers have done to us. And there they were, seated weeping around him over what had befallen him, and Fatima saying: O father, O Messenger of God, do you not see what your community has done to my son? Will you permit me to take from the blood of his grey hair and dye my forelock with it, that I may meet God Almighty stained with the blood of my son al-Hussein? He said to her: Take, and we shall take, O Fatima. And I saw them taking from the blood of his grey hair, and Fatima wiping it on her forelock, while the Prophet and Ali and al-Hasan (peace be upon them) wiped it upon their throats, their chests, and their arms up to the elbows. And I heard the Messenger of God saying: I would ransom you, O Hussein! It grieves me — by God — to see you with your head severed, your brow soiled, your throat bleeding, fallen upon your back, the Creator having clothed you with dust, while you lie thrown down, slain, your two hands cut off. O my son! Who cut off your right hand and then the left? He said: O grandfather, there was with me a camel-driver from Medina who, when he saw me lay aside my trousers for ablution, would wish that my drawstring were his. Nothing kept me from giving it to him except my knowledge that he would be the doer of this deed. When I was killed, he came out seeking me among the slain, and found me a body without a head. He examined my trousers and saw the drawstring, which I had tied in many knots. He set his hand to the drawstring and undid one knot, so I stretched out my right hand

and grasped the drawstring. He searched the battlefield and found a piece of broken sword, with which he cut off my right hand. Then he undid another knot, so I grasped the drawstring with my left hand lest he undo it and my private parts be exposed, so he sawed off my left hand. When he wished to undo the drawstring, he sensed your presence and threw himself among the slain. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) heard al-Hussein's words, he wept bitterly, and came to me among the slain until he stood near me, and said: What is between me and you, O camel-driver? You cut off two hands that Gabriel and all the angels of God so long kissed, and by which the dwellers of the heavens and the earths were blessed? Was it not enough for you what the accursed ones did to him of humiliation and disgrace, exposing his women after the seclusion of their chambers and the drawing of curtains? May God blacken your face, O camel-driver, in this world and the Hereafter, and may God cut off your hands and your feet, and place you among the party of those who shed our blood and dared against God! He had scarcely completed his supplication when my hands withered, and I felt my face as though it had been clothed with patches of dark night. I have remained in this state, so I came to this House to seek intercession, though I know I shall not be forgiven. There remained no one in Mecca who did not hear his tale and draw near to God by cursing him, and each one said: Enough for you what you committed, O accursed one — and those who have wronged shall come to know what end they shall turn to.
Some of the narrators said: It is related of a Kufan blacksmith, who said: When the army set out from Kufa to fight al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both), I gathered iron in my possession, took my tools, and went with them. When they arrived and pitched their tents, I built a tent and set to making tent pegs, nails, and tethers for the horses, and spearheads, and whatever was bent of a lance-point or dagger or sword — I was skilled in all of that. So my earnings became plentiful, and my reputation spread among them, until al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came with his army, and we set out to Karbala and pitched camp on the bank of the Alqami. The fighting broke out between them, they denied him water, and they killed him, his supporters, and his sons. The period of our stay and our departure was nineteen days, and I returned wealthy to my dwelling, with the captives along with us. They were presented to Ubayd Allah, who ordered that they be paraded to Yazid in Syria. I remained in my dwelling for a few days, and then

one night, as I lay sleeping on my bed, I saw a vision as though the Resurrection had come, and the people surging upon the earth like locusts when they have lost their guide, all of them with tongues lolling out upon their chests from the severity of thirst. I believed there was none among them more severely thirsty than I, for it had dulled my hearing and sight from its intensity — besides the heat of the sun, from which my brain boiled, and the earth boiled as though it were tar with fire kindled beneath it, and I imagined the soles of my feet had been torn off. By God the Almighty, had I been given the choice between my thirst and the cutting of my flesh so that my blood flowed for me to drink it, I would have seen drinking it as better than my thirst. While I was in this painful torment and this overwhelming affliction, there was a man whose light filled the gathering place, and the universe rejoiced in his gladness, riding upon a horse, a man of grey hair, surrounded by thousands of every prophet, successor, truthful one, martyr, and righteous one. He passed by like a wind or the coursing of a celestial sphere. An hour passed, and there was a horseman upon a noble steed with a white blaze, his face like the full moon, beneath his stirrup thousands — if he commanded, they obeyed, and if he forbade, they desisted. The bodies shuddered at his glances, and the limbs trembled at his bearing. I grieved over the first one, whom I had not asked about, out of fear of this one. And there he was, standing up in his stirrups, pointing to his companions, and I heard his words: Seize him! And one of them gripped my upper arm with iron tongs coming out of the fire, and carried me toward him, and I imagined my right shoulder had been torn off. I asked him to ease his grip, but he only increased the weight upon me. I said to him: I ask you, by the One who set you over me, who are you?
He said: An angel from the angels of the Almighty. I said: And who is this? He said: Ali the repeated charger. I said: And the one before him? He said: Muhammad the Chosen. I said: And those around him? He said: The prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, the righteous, and the believers. I said: What have I done that he should set you over me? He said: To him the matter returns, and your state is the state of these. So I looked closely, and there was Umar ibn Sa'd, the commander of the army, and people I did not recognize, and on his neck a chain of iron, with fire coming out of his eyes and ears. I became certain of perdition. The rest of the people — some shackled, some bound, some subdued by the upper arm like me. While we were marching, there was the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), whom the angel had described, seated upon a high throne

that shone — I think it was of pearl — and two men of radiant grey hair at his right. I asked the angel about them, and he said: Noah and Abraham. And there was the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) saying: What have you done, O Ali? He said: I have left no one of the killers of al-Hussein but that I have brought him.
So I praised God Almighty that I was not among them, and my reason was restored to me. And there was the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) saying: Bring them forward. So they brought them forward to him, and he began to question them and weep, and all who were in the gathering wept at his weeping, for he would say to the man: What did you do at the plain of Karbala to my son al-Hussein? And one would answer: O Messenger of God, I denied him the water; and this one would say: I killed him; and this one would say: I trampled his chest with my horse; and among them one would say: I struck his ailing son. Then the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) cried out: O my son! O the scarcity of his helpers! O Hussein! O Ali! Thus did my household befall after me. Look, O my father Adam; look, O my brother Noah — how they treated me regarding my offspring? They wept until the gathering-place shook, then he commanded the guardians of Hell to drag them one after another into the Fire.
Then they brought a man, and he questioned him, and the man said: I did nothing. He said: Were you not a carpenter? He said: You speak truly, my master, but I did nothing except the tent pole for Husayn ibn Numayr; for it broke from a violent wind, and I joined it. So he wept and said: You swelled the throng against my son. Take him to the Fire! And they cried out: There is no judgment except for God, and His Messenger, and his successor.
The blacksmith said: I became certain of perdition. Then he commanded that I be brought forward, and they brought me forward. He questioned me and I informed him, and he ordered me to the Fire. As soon as they dragged me, I awoke, and I recounted it to everyone I met, while my tongue had dried up, half of me had died, and everyone who loved him disowned him, and he died poor — may God not have mercy on him. And those who have wronged shall come to know what end they shall turn to (1).
It is narrated from Dawud al-Bakri, from Ali ibn Di'bil ibn Ali al-Khuza'i, who related that he saw his father Di'bil al-Khuza'i in a dream and asked him about his state, and he informed him, saying among what he said: I met

the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), wearing white garments and a white cap, and he said to me: Are you Di'bil? I said: Yes, O Messenger of God. He said: Recite to me your verses concerning my children. So I recited to him my words:

He said: Then he said to me: You have done well, and he interceded for me, and gave me his garments — and here they are — and he pointed to the garments on his body (1).
The Third Gathering, of the eleventh day
The signs that appeared after the slaying of Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
Ibn Sirin said: We were informed that the redness which accompanies the twilight did not exist before the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) (2). And in another narration he said: There was no redness in the sky until al-Hussein was killed (3) — indeed the sky wept, and its weeping was its redness. Another said: The horizons of the sky turned red for six months after the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and the redness continued to be seen thereafter (4).
(4) .
Abu Nu'aym and Ibn Asakir narrated, from Hisham, from Muhammad, who said: This redness in the horizons of the sky was not seen until al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) was killed (5).
Ibn al-Jawzi said: The wisdom of it is that our anger causes a redness of the face, while the Truth is exalted above corporeality, so He manifested the effect of His wrath upon those who killed al-Hussein (peace be upon him) by the redness of the horizon, to make plain the magnitude of

It is related from Khallad, the owner of the sesame — who used to lodge among Banu Jahdar — who said: My mother told me, saying: We lived for a time after the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) while the sun would rise reddened upon the walls and houses, morning and evening (2).
Al-Tabarani narrated with his chain from Abu Qubayl, who said: When al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed, the sun was eclipsed with such an eclipse that the stars appeared at midday, until we thought it was the Resurrection itself (3).
It is narrated from Qurra ibn Khalid, who said: The sky did not weep over anyone except over Yahya ibn Zakariyya and al-Hussein ibn Ali, and its redness was its weeping (4).
It is narrated from Ibn Sirin, who said: The sky did not weep over anyone after Yahya ibn Zakariyya except over al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) (5).
Ibn Abi Hatim related, from Ubayd al-Maktab, from Ibrahim, who said: The sky has not wept since the world began except over two. I said to Ubayd: Does not the sky and the earth weep over the believer? He said: That is his station where his deeds ascend. He said: And do you know what the weeping of the sky is? I said: No. He said: It turns red and becomes rose-colored like oil-dregs. When Yahya ibn Zakariyya (peace be upon him) was killed, the sky turned red and rained blood, and when al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) was killed, the sky turned red (6). Concerning this, Sulayman ibn Qatta al-Khuza'i says:
Truly the slain one of al-Taff, of the house of Hashim,
humbled the necks of Quraysh, and they were humbled.

It is narrated from al-Rayyan ibn Shabib, in a hadith of his from Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him), that he said to him: O son of Shabib, my father related to me, from his father, from his grandfather, that when my grandfather al-Hussein was killed, the sky rained blood and red dust (2).
It is narrated from Umm Salama, may God Almighty be pleased with her, who said: When al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, we were rained upon with blood (3). And in the narration of Ibn Hamdun he said: Sulaym the storyteller said: When al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) was killed, the sky rained fresh blood (4).
It is narrated from Muslim ibn Ibrahim, who said: Umm Shawq al-Abdiyya related to us, saying: Nadra al-Azdiyya related to me, saying: When al-Hussein ibn Ali was killed, the sky rained blood, and in the morning our jars and everything we had were filled with blood (5).
It is narrated from Ja'far ibn Sulayman, who said: My maternal aunt Umm Salim related to me, saying: When al-Hussein was killed, we were rained upon with rain like blood upon the houses and walls. She said: And it reached me that it was so in Khurasan, Syria, and Kufa (6).
It is narrated from Qurt ibn Abd Allah, who said: It rained one day at midday, and it struck my garment, and behold it was blood. I went with the camels to the valley, and behold it was blood, so they would not drink — and it was the day al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed.

Among the signs that occurred after the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was the appearance of the stars in the daytime. Isa ibn al-Harith al-Kindi said: When al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, we remained seven days such that when we prayed the afternoon prayer we would look at the sun upon the edges of the walls as though they were saffron-dyed wraps, and we looked at the stars striking one against another (1). And from Khalaf ibn Khalifa, from his father, who said: When al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, the sky darkened, and the stars appeared in the daytime until I saw Orion at the afternoon, and red dust fell (2).
Abd al-Malik ibn Kardus related, from the chamberlain of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, who said: I entered the palace with him when al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed. He said: Then a fire — or a word like it — blazed in his face, so he did this with his sleeve over his face, and said: Do not relate this to anyone (3).
Among the signs that occurred was that no stone was lifted but that beneath it was fresh blood. Khallad the owner of the sesame related from his mother concerning the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), saying: They would lift no stone but found beneath it blood (4).
It is narrated from Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Ali, from his father, who said: Abd al-Malik sent for the son of the Exilarch and said: Was there in the slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) a sign? The son of the Exilarch said: No stone was uncovered on that day but that fresh blood was found beneath it (5).
It is narrated from al-Zuhri, who said: Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan said to me: What sort of man are you, if you can tell me

what sign there was on the day al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed? He said: I said: No pebble was lifted in Jerusalem but that fresh blood was found beneath it. Abd al-Malik said: Indeed, you and I in this hadith are two companions (1).
Among what came and appeared of the miracles of the noble head, when the people carried it to Kufa, is what Abu Mikhnaf narrated, saying: He dispatched his head (peace be upon him) on that very day with Khawli ibn Yazid and Humayd ibn Muslim al-Azdi to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. Khawli set out with it and made for the palace, but found the palace gate locked, so he went to his dwelling and placed it beneath a tub in his house. He had two wives: a woman from Banu Asad, and the other from the Hadramis, called al-Nawar, daughter of Malik ibn Aqrab, and that night was the night of the Hadrami woman.
Hisham said: My father related to me from al-Nawar bint Malik, who said: Khawli came with the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and placed it beneath a tub in the house, then entered the room and went to his bed. I said to him: What is the news? What is with you? He said: I have brought you the wealth of all time — this is the head of al-Hussein with you in the house. She said: I said: Woe to you! The people came with gold and silver, and you came with the head of the son of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family)? No, by God, never shall my head and your head be gathered together in one house.
She said: So I rose from my bed and went out into the courtyard, and he called the Asadi woman and brought her in to him, while I sat watching. She said: By God, I kept looking at a light that shone like a pillar from the sky to the tub, and I saw white birds fluttering around it. He said: When morning came, he went off with the head to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, may God's curse be upon him (2).
It is narrated from al-Minhal ibn Amr, who said: I — by God — saw the head of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) when it was carried, while I was in Damascus, and before the head a man was reciting Surat al-Kahf, until he reached the words of

It is narrated from Salama ibn Kuhayl, who said: I saw the head of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) upon the spear, and it was saying: "God will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" (3) (4).

Mu'adh ibn Asad said: I said to al-Fadl: By God, did you hear it from al-A'mash? He said: By God, I heard it from him. Al-A'mash said: I said to Salama ibn Kuhayl: By God, did you hear it from him? He said: By God, I heard it from him at the Gate of al-Faradis in Damascus — it was made plain to me, not merely likened to me — and it was saying: "God will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" (5).
How excellent are the words of one of them when he says:
They brought your head, O son of the daughter of Muhammad,
soiled with his blood, utterly drenched.
It is as though, by you, O son of the daughter of Muhammad,
they openly and deliberately slew a messenger.
They killed you thirsting and did not heed,
in your killing, the Revelation and its interpretation.
And they magnify God for your having been killed — yet they
have killed by you the very magnifying and the testimony of faith.

The First Gathering, of the twelfth day
Their arrival at Kufa and what befell them there
Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may mercy be upon him, said in al-Luhuf: Ibn Sa'd marched with the captives referred to, and when they drew near Kufa, its people gathered to look at them.
The narrator said: A woman of Kufa looked out and said: From which captives are you? They said: We are the captives of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). So the woman came down from her rooftop and gathered for them wraps, cloths, and veils, and gave them, so they covered themselves.
The narrator said: With the women was Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), worn down by illness, and al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna, who had stood by his uncle and Imam in patient endurance of the strokes of swords and the thrusts of spears, having been left for dead, overwhelmed by wounds.
The author of the book al-Masabih narrated that al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna killed seventeen men before his uncle al-Hussein (peace be upon him) on that day, and was struck with eighteen wounds. He fell, and his maternal uncle Asma ibn Kharija took him, carried him to Kufa, treated him until he recovered, and carried him to Medina.
Also with them were Zayd and Umar, the two sons of al-Hasan the grandson (peace be upon them). The people of Kufa began to wail and weep, and Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said: You wail and weep on our account, yet who is it that killed us? (1)
The learned al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: I saw in one of the reliable books, narrated in a disconnected chain from Muslim al-Jassas, who said: Ibn Ziyad summoned me to repair the governor's house in Kufa,
