The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

(466)
al-Sajjad (peace be upon him) found Banu Asad gathered around the slain, bewildered, not knowing what to do. They had not been able to recognize them, for the people had separated their heads from their bodies. They would ask, perhaps, about their own kin and clansmen?
So he (peace be upon him) informed them of what he had come to do — to lay these pure bodies to rest — and told them their names, just as he made known to them the Hashimites among the companions. Then weeping and wailing rose up, and tears flowed from them in every direction. The women of Asad let down their hair and struck their cheeks.
Then the Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) walked to his father's body, embraced it, and wept aloud. He came to the place of the grave, lifted a little of the earth, and there appeared a dug grave and a cleft tomb. He spread his palms beneath the back, saying: "In the name of God, in the path of God, upon the creed of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). God and His Messenger have spoken truly. As God wills. There is no power and no strength save in God the Almighty." He lowered him alone and let no one of Banu Asad share in it with him, and he said to them: "With me is one who helps me." When he had settled him in his resting place, he laid his cheek upon his noble throat, saying: "Blessed is the earth that holds your pure body, for after you the world is darkened, while the Hereafter is illumined by your light. As for the night, it is sleepless, and grief is everlasting — until God chooses for your family the abode in which you now dwell. Upon you be peace from me, O son of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and the mercy of God and His blessings." And he wrote upon the grave: "This is the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, whom they killed thirsty and a stranger."
How fine are the words of the scholar Sheikh Ali al-Jishi, may mercy be upon him, when he said:
I shall not forget when he returned from the captivity of the foes,
in secret, to bury the body of the best of the slain,
and he saw him cast down, with people gathered round about,
who had drawn back in fear of punishment.
When they saw his grief, they said: "We have indeed
come to bury the grandson of the best of messengers,
but for lifting the body and moving it we found
for all of us no power and no way."
So he called for a reed mat there and wrapped him
in it, without shroud and without washing.
(467)
He raised the bier, and the angels, out of sorrow,
attended it with declarations of God's greatness and oneness.
To carry it came the Prophet and Haydar,
and the Chosen One, amid tears and lamentation.
And, may mercy be upon him, he also said, in the voice of the Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) when he laid his father al-Hussein (peace be upon him) in his noble grave:
O traveler who, by his departure, left the world
dark as the night, while the next world became light —
you are like the sun: a horizon in which it has risen,
shining; but wherever it is absent, gloom returns.
Sleepless, my night over you shall never cease,
nor shall I be seen, for grief, joyful so long as I live. (1)
The narrator said: Then he (peace be upon him) walked to his uncle al-Abbas (peace be upon him) and saw him in that state which astonished the angels among the layers of heaven, and made the houris weep in the chambers of Paradise. He fell upon him, kissing his sacred throat, saying: "After you, may the world be laid waste, O moon of Banu Hashim. Upon you from me be peace, as a martyr who sought God's reward, and the mercy of God and His blessings." He cleft a tomb for him and lowered him alone, as he had done with his martyred father, and he said to Banu Asad: "With me is one who helps me." Yes, he left a place for Banu Asad to share with him in burying the martyrs. He designated two spots for them and ordered them to dig two pits, and he placed Banu Hashim in the first and the companions in the second. (2)
As for al-Hurr al-Riyahi, his clan carried him off to where his shrine now stands. It is said that his mother was present, and when she saw what was being done to the bodies, she carried al-Hurr to this place.
The closest of the martyrs to al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was his son Ali al-Akbar (peace be upon him). Concerning this the Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to Abdullah ibn Hammad al-Basri: For he is a stranger in a strange land; the one who visits him weeps for him, and the one who does not visit him grieves for him, and the one who did not witness him burns for him, and the one who looks at the grave of his son at his feet has mercy upon him — in a barren land, with no kinsman near him nor any relative. Then his right was denied, and there gathered against him

the people of apostasy, until they killed him and left him forsaken, exposing him to wild beasts, and forbidding him to drink the water of the Euphrates that the dogs drink, and they wasted the right of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) and his charge concerning him and his family. So he passed the night abandoned in his grave, slain among his kin and his followers, between layers of earth. His grave has been made desolate in its solitude and its distance from his grandfather — a dwelling that none comes to save one whose heart God has tested for faith and to whom He has made known our right. Until he (peace be upon him) said: My father told me that, since he was killed, his place has never been without one who prays over him among the angels, or among the jinn, or among mankind, or among the wild beasts. There is nothing but that it envies the one who visits him, and seeks blessing through him, and hopes, by looking upon him, for good, because of his gazing upon his grave.
Then he (peace be upon him) said: It has reached me that a people come to him from the regions of Kufa, and folk from elsewhere, and women who lament him — and that is in the middle of Sha'ban. Some recite, some narrate, some lament, and some recite elegies. I said to him: Yes, may I be made your ransom, I have witnessed some of what you describe. He said: Praise be to God, who has placed among the people some who come to us, and praise us, and lament for us, and who has made our enemy one who reviles them, even among our kin and others, belittling them and reckoning vile what they do. (1)
How fine are the words of Sheikh Muhammad Husayn Kashif al-Ghita (may his secret be sanctified) when he said:
Your afflictions, O family of Muhammad,
at their remembrance I choke upon the sweetest draught.
Blindness to the eyes that do not pour their tears
for you, when your blood poured upon the dust;
and misery to the heart that grief does not rend
for a war by which Banu Harb tore you apart.

Shall I forget your heads upon the tips of the spears,
rising like moons among the gleaming stars?
Shall I forget the trampling of the horses over your bodies,
and the places of stabbing and striking that were trodden?
Shall I forget the blood that was shed, and the tears
that were poured, and the free women unveiled from their coverings?
Shall I forget the houses that were plundered, and the women
stripped, and the hearts melted with terror?
Shall I forget the tyrants storming your houses,
terrifying the family of God with striking and pillage?
Shall I forget the blaze of fire within them, when there was
nothing in them but children fleeing, scattered in fright? (1)

The Second Gathering, of the Thirteenth Day
The Discourse of the Pure Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) to the Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him),
and Her Words on the Exaltation of the Grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) Through the Passing of the Days
Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Qudama ibn Za'ida, from his father, who said: Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said: It has reached me, O Za'ida, that you sometimes visit the grave of Abu Abdullah. I said: It is indeed as it has reached you. So he (peace be upon him) said to me: Why do you do that, when you have a position with your ruler, who does not tolerate anyone for loving us, preferring us, mentioning our virtues, and what is incumbent upon this nation of

our right?
I said: By God, I intend by it nothing but God and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), and I do not care for the wrath of any who is wrathful, nor does any harm that befalls me on its account loom large in my breast.
He said: By God, is that truly so? I said: By God, it is truly so — he said it three times and I said it three times. Then he said: Rejoice, then rejoice, then rejoice. For I shall surely tell you a tale that lay with me among the hidden treasures. When there befell us at al-Taff what befell us, and my father (peace be upon him) was killed, along with those of his children, his brothers, and the rest of his family who were with him, and his sanctuary and his women were carried upon the bare backs of camels, being driven toward Kufa, I began to look at them lying slain and unburied. That weighed heavily upon my breast, and my anxiety grew intense at what I saw of them, until my soul nearly departed. My aunt Zainab the Elder, daughter of Ali, perceived this in me and said: What is it I see in you — you give up your soul, O remnant of my grandfather and my father and my brothers? I said: How should I not grieve and despair, when I see my master, my brothers, my uncles, my cousins, and my family soaked in their own blood, cast out upon the open ground, stripped, neither shrouded nor buried, with no one turning to them and no human being coming near them, as though they were a household of the Daylam and the Khazar?
She said: Let not what you see distress you. For by God, that is a covenant from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) to your grandfather, your father, and your uncle. God has taken the pledge of certain people of this nation, whom the tyrants of this nation do not know but who are well-known among the people of the heavens, that they shall gather these scattered limbs and bury them, and these blood-soaked bodies, and they shall set up at this Taff a marker for the grave of your father, the master of martyrs — its trace shall not be effaced, nor its mark wiped away, through the passing of the nights and days. The leaders of disbelief and the partisans of misguidance shall strive to erase and obliterate it, yet its trace shall only increase in prominence, and its standing only in exaltation.
I said: What is this covenant, and what is this tale? She said: Umm Ayman told me that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) visited the house of Fatima (peace be upon her) one day, and she prepared for him a porridge (peace be

upon her), and Ali (peace be upon him) brought him a tray of dates. Then Umm Ayman said: I brought them a large cup containing milk and butter. So the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan, and al-Hussein (peace be upon them) ate of that porridge, and the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) drank, and they drank, of that milk. Then he ate, and they ate, of those dates with butter. Then the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) washed his hand, while Ali poured the water over him. When he had finished washing his hand, he wiped his face. Then he looked at Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan, and al-Hussein with a look in which we recognized joy upon his face. Then he gazed toward the sky for a long while, then turned his face toward the qibla, and spread out his hands in supplication. Then he fell down in prostration, sobbing. He prolonged the sobbing, and his wailing rose loud, and his tears flowed. Then he raised his head, bowed toward the ground, and his tears dripped like falling rain.
So Fatima, Ali, al-Hasan, and al-Hussein (peace be upon them) grieved, and I grieved with them at what we saw of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), but we held him in too much awe to ask him, until, when that had gone on long, Ali said to him and Fatima said to him: What makes you weep, O Messenger of God? May God never make your eyes weep, for what we see of your state has wounded our hearts. He said: O my brother, I was made glad by you.
Muzahim ibn Abd al-Warith said in his narration at this point: He said: O my beloved, I was made glad by you with a gladness the like of which I was never made glad before, and indeed I look upon you and praise God for His blessing upon me through you. Then Gabriel descended upon me and said: O Muhammad, God, blessed and exalted, has looked upon what is in your soul, and known your joy in your brother, your daughter, and your two grandsons, and so He has perfected for you the blessing and made the gift sweet to you — by placing them, their offspring, those who love them, and their followers with you in Paradise. He shall not separate you from them; they shall be honored as you are honored, and given as you are given, until you are pleased and beyond pleased — despite much affliction that shall befall them in the world, and trials that shall reach them at the hands of people who lay claim to your creed and allege that they are of your nation, though disowned by God and by you, blow upon blow and killing upon killing. Their places of falling shall be scattered, their graves far apart — a choice from God for them and for you concerning them. So praise God, Mighty and Majestic, for His choosing, and be content with His decree. So I praised God and was content with His decree in what He chose for you.
(472)
Then Gabriel said to me: O Muhammad, your brother shall be oppressed after you, overcome regarding your nation, wearied by your enemies, and then killed after you. He shall be killed by the worst of creatures and of creation, the most wretched of mankind, the like of the hamstringer of the she-camel, in a city to which his migration shall be — and it is the planting-ground of his followers and the followers of his children, and there, in any case, their affliction shall be great and their calamity grievous.
And this grandson of yours — and he gestured with his hand toward al-Hussein (peace be upon him) — shall be killed amid a band of your offspring, your family, and the best of your nation, on the bank of the Euphrates, in a land called Karbala. Because of it, grief and affliction shall multiply upon your enemies and the enemies of your offspring, on the day whose anguish does not pass and whose sorrow does not fade. It is the purest spot of the earth and the most sacred of them, and indeed it is from the plain of Paradise. When that day comes, on which your grandson and his family are killed, and the battalions of the people of disbelief and damnation surround them, the earth shall quake from its corners, the mountains shall sway and their trembling grow violent, the seas shall clash with their waves, and the heavens with their inhabitants shall heave — in anger for you, O Muhammad, and for your offspring, and in outrage at the violation of your sanctity, and at the evil with which you are repaid concerning your offspring and your kin. Nothing of that shall remain but it seeks God's permission, Mighty and Majestic, to aid your oppressed and downtrodden family, who are God's proof over His creation after you. So God shall reveal to the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the seas, and whoever is in them: I am God, the Sovereign, the All-Powerful — He whom no fugitive escapes, nor any who refuses overcomes — and I am able to take retribution and exact vengeance. By My might and My majesty, I shall surely punish whoever wronged My Messenger and My chosen one, and violated his sanctity, and killed his kin, and cast aside his covenant, and wronged his family, with a punishment with which I have never punished any of the worlds.
At that, everything in the heavens and the earths shall cry out, cursing whoever wronged your kin and made lawful the violation of your sanctity. And when that band passes on to its resting places, God, Mighty and Majestic, shall take charge of seizing their souls with His own hand, and angels shall descend to the earth from the seventh heaven, bearing with them vessels of ruby and emerald, filled with the water of life, and robes from the robes of Paradise, and fragrance from the fragrance of Paradise.
(473)
So they shall wash their bodies with that water, clothe them in the robes, embalm them with that fragrance, and the angels shall pray over them rank upon rank. Then God shall raise up a people of your nation whom the disbelievers do not know, who took no part in that bloodshed by word, deed, or intention, and they shall bury their bodies and set up a marker for the grave of the master of martyrs in that plain — a beacon for the people of truth, and a means for the believers to attain salvation. Angels shall surround it — from every heaven a hundred thousand angels — every day and night, praying over him, glorifying God beside him, asking God's forgiveness for those who visit him, and recording the names of those of your nation who come to him as visitors, drawing near to God and to you thereby, and the names of their fathers, their clans, and their lands. They shall be marked upon their faces with the brand of the light of the Throne of God: "This is a visitor to the grave of the best of martyrs and the son of the best of prophets." When the Day of Resurrection comes, there shall shine upon their faces, from the effect of that brand, a light by which the eyes shall be dazzled — by which they shall be pointed out and recognized.
It is as though I see you, O Muhammad, between me and Michael, with Ali before us, and with us angels of God beyond counting, while we single out by that brand upon their faces those of all creation, until God delivers them from the terror of that day and its hardships. That is the judgment of God and His gift to whoever visits your grave, O Muhammad, or the grave of your brother, or the grave of your two grandsons, intending thereby nothing but God, Mighty and Majestic. People upon whom God's curse and wrath are due shall strive to efface the mark of that grave and wipe away its trace, but God, blessed and exalted, shall grant them no way to that. Then the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: This is what made me weep and grieve.
Zainab (peace be upon her) said: So when Ibn Muljam, may God curse him, struck my father (peace be upon him), and I saw the mark of death upon him, I said to him: O father, Umm Ayman told me such and such, and I would love to hear it from you. He said: O my daughter, the tale is as Umm Ayman told you. It is as though I see you and the daughters of your house as captives in this land, humiliated and abased, fearing that the people may snatch you away. So patience, patience — for by the One who split the seed and created the soul, on that day God shall have no friend upon the face of the earth other than you and other than those who love you and your followers.
(474)
The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said to us, when he informed us of this tale: Satan, on that day, shall fly with joy, roaming the whole earth among his devils and demons, saying: O company of devils, we have attained our demand from the offspring of Adam, and reached our utmost aim in their destruction, and made the Fire their inheritance — except for whoever clings to this band. So make your occupation the casting of doubt in people concerning them, and inciting them to enmity against them, and stirring them up against them and their friends, until the misguidance and disbelief of the creatures be firmly fixed, and not one of them be saved. And Satan spoke truly of them, though he is a liar — for, with enmity toward you, no righteous deed avails, and, with love and devotion to you, no sin harms, save the major ones.
Za'ida said: Then Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), after he had related this tale to me, said: Take it for yourself. Even were you to beat the flanks of the camels for a whole year in pursuit of it, it would be but little. (1)
How fine are the words of Sayyid Ja'far al-Hilli, may mercy be upon him, when he said:
O dead one who left minds bewildered,
and whose body was left three days upon the open ground;
the beasts come to him by night, saluting him,
while the people, by day, run their horses over him.
Woe to them! They took no guidance from his counsel —
like pearls strung in order and gold refined.
Never once did the flow of his oration break off
until his head, atop the spear, recited it. (2)

Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), and I looked at the ra'ibi pigeon cooing at length. Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) looked at me for a long time, then said: O Dawud, do you know what this bird is saying? I said: No, by God, may I be made your ransom. He said: It is invoking against the killers of al-Hussein, God's blessings be upon him. So keep them in your homes.
And from al-Hussein ibn Abi Ghundar, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), he said: I heard him say concerning the owl: Has any of you ever seen it by day? It was said to him: It scarcely appears by day, and appears only by night. He said: Truly, it never ceased to dwell in inhabited places, ever; but when al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, it vowed upon itself never again to dwell in inhabited places, and to dwell only in ruins. So it remains fasting and grieving throughout its day until the night shrouds it, and when the night shrouds it, it never ceases to wail over al-Hussein, God's blessings be upon him, until morning.
And from al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Sa'id al-Barbari — caretaker of the grave of al-Rida (peace be upon him) — he said: My father told me, saying: I came in upon al-Rida (peace be upon him), and he said to me: What do the people say? He said: I said: May I be made your ransom, we have come to ask you. He said: He said to me: Do you see this owl? In the time of my grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), it used to dwell in the houses, the palaces, and the homes, and when people ate their food it would fly and alight before them, and food would be tossed to it and it would be given drink, and then it would return to its place. But when al-Hussein ibn Ali was killed, it went out from inhabited places to ruins, mountains, and wildernesses, and said: Wretched a nation are you! You killed the son of your prophet, and I do not trust you with my safety.
And from al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Maythami, he said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: O Ya'qub, have you ever seen an owl breathe by day? He said: No. He said: Do you know why that is? He said: No. He said: Because it remains throughout its day fasting, and when the night shrouds it, it breaks its fast on what it is provided, then it never ceases to chant over al-Hussein until morning. (1)

al-Mufaddal ibn Umar al-Ju'fi, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq, from his father, from Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them), who said: When al-Hussein ibn Ali was killed, a crow came and dipped into his blood, then rolled in it, then flew off and alighted in Medina upon the wall of Fatima bint al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) — and she was the younger. She raised her head and looked at it, and wept bitterly, and began to recite:
The crow croaked, and I said: For whom
do you lament — woe to you, O crow?
It said: The Imam. I said: Who?
It said: The one guided to what is right.
Indeed al-Hussein, at Karbala,
amid the spears and the striking.
So weep for al-Hussein with tears,
hoping for God along with reward.
I said: al-Hussein? It said to me:
Truly, he has come to rest in the dust.
Then the wing bore it away,
and it could not return an answer.
So I wept at what had befallen me,
after the supplication was answered.

Muhammad ibn Ali said: So she announced his death to the people of Medina, and they said: She has come to us with the magic of Abd al-Muttalib. But it was no sooner than the news came to them of the killing of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them). (1)
The scholar al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: It is narrated by way of the Family of the House (peace be upon them) that when al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was martyred, he remained at Karbala cast down, his blood spilled upon the ground, when behold, a white bird came and rubbed itself in his blood, then came along with the blood dripping from it, and saw birds beneath the shade upon the boughs and trees, each of them speaking of grain, fodder, and water. So that bird, smeared with blood, said to them: Woe to you! Do you busy yourselves with amusements and the mention of the world and forbidden things, while al-Hussein is in the land of Karbala, in this heat, cast upon the burning sand, thirsty and slaughtered, his blood spilled? So the birds returned, each of them making for Karbala, and they saw our master al-Hussein (peace be upon him) cast upon the ground, his body without head, without washing, and without shroud, the swirling winds blowing over him, his body crushed,

the horses having shattered it with their hooves — his visitors the beasts of the wastes, lamented by the jinn of the plains and the rugged lands; the dust shining from his lights, and the air glowing from his blossoms.

When the birds saw him, they cried out and proclaimed their weeping and lamentation, and fell upon his blood, rolling in it. Each of them flew to a region to inform its people of the killing of Abu Abdullah al-Hussein (peace be upon him). And it was by fate and decree that a bird among these birds made for the city of the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), and came fluttering, the blood dripping from its wings, and circled the grave of our master the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), proclaiming the call: "Behold, al-Hussein has been killed at Karbala! Behold, al-Hussein has been slaughtered at Karbala!" So the birds gathered upon it, weeping and wailing over him. When the people of Medina saw that wailing of the birds, and witnessed the blood dripping from the bird, they did not know what the news was, until a span of time passed and the news of the killing of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came, and they knew that that bird had been informing the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) of the killing of the son of Fatima the Chaste, and the delight of the eye of the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family).
And from the book al-Awalim of Sayyid al-Bahrani, may mercy be upon him, from one of the books of the companions, may God be pleased with them, he said: It was related of a man of Asad who said: I was a farmer on the river of al-Alqami after the army had departed — the army of Banu Umayya. I saw wonders, of which I can recount only a few. Among them was that when the winds blew, breaths would pass over me like the breaths of musk and amber, and when they grew still, I would see stars descending from the sky to the earth, and the like of them rising from the earth to the sky. I was alone with my family and saw no one whom I could ask about that. And at sunset a lion would come from the direction of the qibla, so I would turn away from it to my dwelling. And when morning came and the sun rose and I went out from my dwelling, I would see it facing the qibla, departing. So I said to myself: These are Kharijites who have rebelled against Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, and he ordered them killed, and I see in them what I have not seen in any other slain. So, by God, this very night I must keep watch to see whether this lion eats of these bodies or not.

When it was sunset, behold, it came, and I made it out, and it was of dreadful aspect, so I trembled at it, and it crossed my mind: If its aim is human flesh, then it is making for me. While I was conversing thus with myself, I pictured it stepping over the slain until it fell upon a body that was as the sun when it rises, and it crouched over it. I said: It will eat of it. But behold, it was rubbing its face upon it, murmuring and growling. I said: God is greatest! This is nothing but a marvel. So I began to watch it until the darkness thickened, and behold, candles were hung, filling the ground, and behold, there was weeping and wailing and grievous striking of cheeks. So I made for those voices, and lo, they were beneath the earth. I understood from a lamenter among them who was saying: "Alas, Hussein! Alas, my Imam!" My skin shuddered. I drew near to the weeper and adjured her by God and by His Messenger: Who are you? She said: We are women of the jinn. I said: And what is your affair? They said: Every day and night this is our mourning over al-Hussein, the slaughtered and thirsty one. (1)
What then was the state of the Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) when they passed by her with the women, and she saw her beloved cast down upon the ground, and it grieved her sorely to leave him without burial, the east wind blowing dust over him? How fine are the words of the scholar Sheikh Ali al-Jishi, may mercy be upon him, when he said, in her voice addressing al-Hussein (peace be upon him):
My brother, the driver of the camels has hastened the night journey,
and my heart has not been healed by bidding you farewell.
My brother, this is the last covenant of meeting,
and I shall see no reunion after the parting.
I have come, in my affair, to the greatest bewilderment —
and who has ever been tried, in all time, with a trial like mine?
Shall I walk away when I have not buried your body, or do you see
that I should stay, while your head has gone on before me?
Were I given the choice of staying or of the journey,
I would stay, fearing not the ravening beasts.
So I commend you to the Merciful, O son of Muhammad —
upon you be the peace of God, and then my peace.
I have departed, and the daytime has blackened in my eyes,
and after you the days have become nights.
No life is sweet to me, nor any food a pleasure;
longing for you is my drink and my food.

You have remained upon the face of the earth, lying still,
and had the spears not shaded you, you would have lain in the sun. (1)

The Fourth Gathering, of the Thirteenth Day
The Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) Attending the Burial of Khadija bint Khuwaylid and Fatima
bint Asad (peace be upon them), and the Imams' (peace be upon them) Attending the Funerals of Their Followers
It is narrated that when Khadija died, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) undertook her preparation, washing, and embalming. When he wished to shroud her, the trustworthy Gabriel descended and said: O Messenger of God, God conveys His peace to you and singles you out with greeting and honor, and says to you: O Muhammad, the shroud of Khadija — and it is from Paradise — God has gifted to her. So the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) shrouded her, first with his own noble cloak, and second with what Gabriel had brought. Thus she had two shrouds: a shroud from God, and a shroud from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family).
I say: Did al-Hussein (peace be upon him) not give all his wealth, his family, and his children in the path of God? His body remained three days without washing and without shroud.
They washed him not, nor wrapped him in a shroud
on the day of al-Taff, nor spread a cloak over him.
Naked, the horses charged and wheeled over him,
while the wind wove for him a flowing wrap and mantle.
The narrator said: Khadija (peace be upon her) was buried at al-Hajun, and the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) went down into her grave, for the practice of the funeral and prayer over it had not yet been established in those days.
And when Khadija (peace be upon her) died, Fatima began clinging to her father, saying: Where is my mother? So Gabriel descended and said: God conveys His peace to Fatima and says to her: Your mother is in a house of reeds, its joints of gold and its pillars of red ruby, between Asiya the wife of Pharaoh and Maryam bint Imran.

So Fatima (peace be upon her) said: God is the Peace, and from Him is peace, and to Him is peace.
And God had consoled her, and Gabriel had consoled her, concerning her mother. But when her father died, did anyone console her? Indeed — they stormed the door of her house and burned the door.
And when Khadija (peace be upon her) died, the affliction upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) grew severe, and worries and griefs piled upon him to such a degree that he secluded himself from the people for a long while. He called that year the Year of Sorrow, because in that year he lost his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadija in a single year — indeed, in a single month. Then he migrated to al-Ta'if for a month, and returned to Mecca to settle there, but he could not, for the polytheists of Quraysh schemed to kill him, and gathered in the House of Assembly, and took counsel among themselves about driving him out and shedding his blood. (1)
And it is narrated that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) also attended the funeral of Fatima bint Asad and escorted it (peace be upon her). It is said: when Fatima bint Asad, the mother of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), died, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) came weeping, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: What makes you weep? May God never make your eye weep. He said: My mother has died, O Messenger of God. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: Rather, my mother too, O Ali. For she used to let her own children go hungry and feed me, and leave her own children unkempt and anoint my hair. By God, in the house of Abu Talib there was a date palm, and she would race to it in the morning to gather its fruit, then pick it — may God be pleased with her — and when my cousins came out, she would give that to me. Then he (peace be upon him and his family) rose and undertook her preparation, and shrouded her in his own shirt (peace be upon him and his family). During the escorting of her funeral he would raise one foot and pause before raising the other, barefoot. When he prayed over her, he pronounced "God is greatest" seventy times, then laid her in her grave with his own noble hand, after lying down in her grave and instructing her in the testimony of faith. When the dust was poured over her and the people wished to depart, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) began saying to her: Your son, your son, your son — not Ja'far, nor Aqil — your son, your son: Ali ibn Abi Talib. They said: O Messenger of God, you have done something the like of which we have never seen:
