The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

(376)
Then your father, the generous one, Ali —
he whom we know as the appointed heir —
and al-Hasan, the good, the pleasing, the guardian,
and the one of two wings, the brave young man,
And the lion of God, the living martyr.
Then he charged and fought until he was killed, may God have mercy on him.
Then after him came forth Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn (may God be pleased with him), chanting and saying:
I am Zuhayr, and I am the son of al-Qayn,
I drive you away from Hussein with the sword.
Indeed Hussein is one of the two grandsons,
from the lineage of the righteous, the pure, the adorned.
That is the Messenger of God, no lie therein.
I strike you and see no disgrace in it.
Would that my soul were divided in two!
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib said: He fought until he killed a hundred and twenty men, then Kuthayr ibn Abdullah al-Sha'bi and Muhajir ibn Aws al-Tamimi charged upon him and killed him. When Zuhayr fell, al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: May God not keep you far, O Zuhayr! And may He curse your killer, as He cursed those who were transformed into apes and swine.
Then Sa'id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi came forth, chanting:
Advance, Hussein, today you shall meet Ahmad,
and your elder, the learned, Ali the generous,
and al-Hasan, like the full moon, who reached the most fortunate,
and your uncle, the noble chief, the rightly guided,
Hamza, the lion of God, called the lion,
and the one of two wings, who has taken his seat
in the Garden of Paradise, ascending higher.
He said: He kept fighting until he was killed.
Then Habib ibn Mazahir al-Asadi came forward, saying:
I am Habib, and my father is Muzahhar,
a horseman of battle and blazing war.
Though you are greater in number,
we are higher in proof and more manifest.
And you are more treacherous in keeping faith,
while we are more faithful than you and more patient,
in truth, more flourishing than you and more excusable.
(377)
And he fought fiercely. Then a man from Banu Tamim charged upon him and stabbed him. As he went to rise, al-Husayn ibn Numayr — may God curse him — struck him on the head with his sword, and he fell. The Tamimi dismounted and severed his head. His killing devastated al-Husayn (peace be upon him), who said: With God I count my own self and the loss of my companions. Muhammad ibn Abi Talib said: He killed sixty-two men, then al-Husayn ibn Numayr killed him and hung his head upon his horse's neck.
The narrator said: Then Hilal ibn Nafi' al-Bajali came forward, saying:
I shoot them, marked, their notches fletched,
for the soul — its pity profits it not.
Poisoned, sped by its feathers,
they shall surely fill its ground with the slain.
He kept shooting at them until his arrows were spent. Then he reached for his sword, drew it, and began to say:
I am the young Yemeni, the Bajali,
my religion is the religion of Hussein and Ali.
If I am killed today, this is my hope,
that is my conviction, and I shall meet my deeds.
He killed thirteen men, then they broke both his arms and he was taken captive. Shimr rose to him and struck off his neck.
He said: Then a youth came forth whose father had been killed in the battle, and his mother was with him. His mother said to him: Go forth, my son, and fight before the son of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). So he went out, and al-Husayn said: This is a youth whose father has been killed, and perhaps his mother dislikes his going forth. The youth said: My mother ordered me to do so. Then he advanced, saying:
My commander is Hussein, and what a fine commander!
The joy of the heart of the bearer of glad tidings and the warner.
Ali and Fatima are his parents,
so do you know any equal to him?
He has a countenance like the morning sun,
he has a brow like the shining full moon.
He fought until he was killed, and his head was severed and thrown to the army of al-Husayn (peace be upon him). His mother took up his head and said:
(378)
Well done, my son! O joy of my heart, O light of my eyes! Then she hurled her son's head at a man and killed him. She took up the tent pole and charged at them, saying:
I am an old woman, my master, frail,
withered, worn, and thin.
I strike you a fierce blow
in defense of the noble sons of Fatima.
She struck two men and killed them, then al-Husayn (peace be upon him) ordered her brought back and prayed for her.
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib said: 'Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri came along with Shawdhab, the freedman of Shakir, and said: O Shawdhab, what is in your heart to do? He said: What should I do? I will fight until I am killed. He said: That is what I thought of you. So go forward before Abu Abdullah, that he may count you among his losses as he has counted others. For this is a day on which we ought to seek reward by every means we can, for there is no deed after this day — there is only the reckoning.
So he went forward, greeted al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and said: O Abu Abdullah, by God, there is none upon the face of the earth, near or far, dearer or more beloved to me than you. Were I able to ward off injustice or death from you with anything dearer to me than my own self and blood, I would do it. Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah! I bear witness that I am upon your guidance and the guidance of your father. Then he advanced with his sword toward them.
Rabi' ibn Tamim said: When I saw him advancing, I recognized him, for I had witnessed him in the campaigns, and he was the bravest of people. So I said: O people, this is the lion of lions, this is the son of Abi Shabib! Let none of you go out to him! And he began to call out: Is there a man? Is there a man?
Then Umar ibn Sa'd said: Pelt him with stones from every side. When he saw this, he cast off his armor and helmet, then charged upon the people. By God, I saw him drive off more than two hundred men. Then they closed in upon him from every direction and killed him. I saw his head in the hands of several men, this one saying: I killed him, and the other saying likewise. So Umar ibn Sa'd said: Do not quarrel — no single man killed this one — until he separated them with these words.
(379)
Then Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman, the two al-Ghifari brothers, came to him and said: O Abu Abdullah, peace be upon you. We have come to be killed before you and to defend you. He said: Welcome to you both, draw near to me. They drew near to him weeping. He said: O sons of my brother, what makes you weep? By God, I hope that within an hour you will both be comforted. They said: May God make us your ransom! By God, it is not for ourselves that we weep, but we weep for you. We see that you have been surrounded and we are unable to help you. He said: May God reward you, O sons of my brother, for your sorrow over this and your comforting me with your own lives, with the best reward of the God-fearing. Then they went forward and said: Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God. He said: And upon you both be peace and the mercy of God and His blessings. So they fought until they were killed.
He said: Then a Turkish servant of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) came forth, and he was a reciter of the Quran. He began to fight and killed a group, then he fell stricken. Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) came to him and wept, and placed his cheek upon his cheek. The servant opened his eye, saw al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and smiled. Then he went to his Lord, may God be pleased with him.
He said: Then Yazid ibn Ziyad ibn al-Shathaa shot eight arrows at them, missing with only three of them. Each time he shot, al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: O God, make his aim true and make his reward Paradise. Then they charged upon him and killed him.
The narrator said: A man came and said: Where is Hussein? He answered: Here I am. The man said: Rejoice in the Fire, which you shall enter this very hour. He said: Rather, I rejoice in a merciful Lord and an intercessor whose word is heeded. Who are you? He said: I am Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath. He said: O God, if Your servant is lying, take him to the Fire, and make him this day a sign to his companions. No sooner had the man turned his horse's reins than it threw him off, while his foot was caught in the stirrup, and it dragged him until it tore him apart, and his private parts fell to the ground. By God, I marveled at the swiftness of his prayer's answer.
Then another came and said: Where is Hussein? He answered: Here I am. The man said: Rejoice in the Fire. He said: Rejoice in a merciful Lord and an intercessor whose word is heeded. Who are you? He said: I am Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan. Al-Husayn said:
(380)
Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: God is greatest! The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: I saw as if a spotted dog were lapping at the blood of my household. And al-Husayn said: I saw as if dogs were tearing at me, and among them was a spotted dog that was the fiercest against me — and that is you — and he was a leper.
And from al-Tirmidhi: It was said to al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): How long can a dream be delayed? And he mentioned the dream of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), whose fulfillment came sixty years later.
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and others said: One man after another would come to al-Husayn (peace be upon him) and say: Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God. And al-Husayn would answer him and say: And upon you be peace, and we are right behind you. Then he would recite: "Among them are those who have fulfilled their vow, and among them are those who still wait." — until they were all killed to the last of them, may God's pleasure be upon them, and none remained with al-Husayn (peace be upon him) except his household (1).
And how excellent are the words of Sayyid Rida al-Hindi, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
They charged and clashed and fulfilled their master's right
in a stand where the son outdid even his own father.
The fragrant flower of the Chosen One was left alone
among the foe, with no protector and no support.
He wheels among them with his keen blade and routs them,
they thirty thousand and he a single man.
Had You willed, O Cause of all creation, to wipe them out,
not one of them would have stood firm in the fray. (2)
The Fifth Gathering, of the Day of Ashura
The Slaying of the Sons of Hashim (peace be upon them)
Some of the narrators said, as in Bihar al-Anwar: When the companions of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) had been killed and none remained but his household — they being the children of Ali, the children of Ja'far, the children of Aqil, the children of al-Hasan, and his own children (peace be upon them) —

(381)
they gathered, each bidding the other farewell, and resolved upon battle (1).
Abu al-Faraj narrated in al-Maqatil from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father (peace be upon them both), that the first to be killed of the children of Abi Talib alongside al-Husayn was his son Ali (peace be upon them both) (2).
They said: Then Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) advanced. Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) raised his gray beard toward the sky and said: O God, bear witness against these people, for there has gone out to them a youth who most resembles Your Messenger in form, character, and speech. Whenever we longed for Your Prophet, we would look upon his face. O God, withhold from them the blessings of the earth, scatter them utterly, tear them to pieces, make them divided factions, and never let the rulers be pleased with them. For they invited us claiming they would aid us, then turned upon us and fought us.
Then al-Husayn (peace be upon him) cried out to Umar ibn Sa'd: What is wrong with you? May God sever your kinship and bless you not in your affair, and set over you one to slaughter you upon your bed after me, just as you have severed my kinship and failed to honor my closeness to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). Then al-Husayn (peace be upon him) raised his voice and recited: "Indeed, God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above all the worlds — descendants, some from others; and God is Hearing, Knowing" (3). Then Ali ibn al-Husayn charged upon the people, saying:
I am Ali son of al-Husayn son of Ali,
from a band whose forefather's grandfather is the Prophet.
By God, no son of the bastard shall rule over us!
I thrust at you with the spear until it bends,
I strike you with the sword, defending my father,
the blow of a young man of Hashim, of the line of Ali.
He kept fighting until the people groaned at how many of them he had slain. It is narrated that, despite his thirst, he killed a hundred and twenty men. Then he returned to his father, having sustained many wounds, and said: O father, thirst has killed me, and the weight of the iron has exhausted me. Is there any way to a drink of water,

by which I may gain strength against the enemies? Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) wept and said: O my son, it grieves Muhammad, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and me that you should call upon them and they not answer you, and cry to them for aid and they not aid you. O my son, give me your tongue. He took his tongue and sucked it, and gave him his ring, saying: Hold it in your mouth and return to fight your enemy, for I hope you will not see evening before your grandfather gives you to drink from his brimming cup, a drink after which you will never thirst again. So he returned to the battle, saying:
The war has laid bare its truths,
and thereafter its proofs have appeared.
By God, the Lord of the Throne, we shall not part
from your hosts, until the swords are sheathed.
He kept fighting until he completed the killing of two hundred. Then Munqidh ibn Murra al-Abdi struck him a blow upon the crown of his head that felled him, and the people struck him with their swords. Then he clung to his horse, and the horse carried him into the army of the enemies, and they cut him to pieces with their swords, limb from limb.
When his soul reached his throat, he called out, raising his voice: O father, this is my grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), who has given me to drink from his brimming cup a drink after which I shall never thirst again. And he is saying: Hurry, hurry! For there is a cup reserved for you, that you may drink it this very hour. Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) cried out and said: May God slay a people who slew you — how bold they are against the Most Merciful and against His Messenger, and against the violation of the sanctity of the Messenger! After you, let the dust be upon this world.
Humayd ibn Muslim said: It is as if I am still looking at a woman who came out in haste, like the rising sun, crying out woe and ruin, saying: O my beloved! O fruit of my heart! O light of my eyes! I asked about her, and it was said: She is Zaynab, daughter of Ali (peace be upon him). She came and threw herself upon him. Al-Husayn came, took her hand, and returned her to the tent. Then he (peace be upon him) turned to his young men and said: Carry your brother. So they carried him from where he had fallen and brought him until they laid him by the tent before which they had been fighting.

Talib and killed him (1).
And there came forth from his household Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib. Muhammad ibn Abi Talib said: He fought until he killed ninety-eight men in three charges, then Amr ibn Sabih al-Saydawi and Asad ibn Malik killed him.
Abu al-Faraj said: Abdullah ibn Muslim — his mother was Ruqayya, daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). He was killed by Amr ibn Sabih, as we have related from al-Mada'ini and from Humayd ibn Muslim. It is mentioned that an arrow struck him while his hand was upon his forehead, pinning it to his palm and forehead. And Muhammad ibn Muslim ibn Aqil — his mother was an umm walad — was killed, as we have related from Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali (peace be upon them both), by Abu Jarham al-Azdi and Laqit ibn Iyas al-Juhani (2).
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib and others said: Then after him came forth Ja'far ibn Aqil, and he killed fifteen horsemen. Ibn Shahr Ashub said: And it is said he killed two men, then Bishr ibn Sawt al-Hamdani killed him.
They said: Then after him came forth his brother Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil, and he killed seventeen horsemen, then Uthman ibn Khalid al-Juhani killed him.
Abu al-Faraj said: And Abdullah ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib — his mother was an umm walad — was killed by Uthman ibn Khalid ibn Ashyam al-Juhani and Bishr ibn Hawt al-Qabidi. And Abdullah the Elder, son of Aqil — his mother was an umm walad — was killed, as al-Mada'ini mentioned, by Uthman ibn Khalid al-Juhani and a man from Hamdan.
Then he said: And Muhammad al-Ahwal, son of Abi Sa'id ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib — his mother was an umm walad — was killed by Laqit ibn Yasir al-Juhani, who shot him with an arrow. Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hamza mentioned that Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil was killed alongside him.

Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hamza also mentioned that Ali ibn Aqil — his mother was an umm walad — was killed that day (1).
Then they said: After him came forth Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. He fought until he killed ten men, then Amir ibn Nahshal al-Tamimi killed him.
Then after him came forth Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far, saying:
If you do not know me, I am the son of Ja'far,
the martyr of truth, radiant in the Gardens,
who flies therein on a green wing.
This suffices as honor on the Day of Gathering.
Then he fought until he killed three horsemen and eighteen footmen of the people, then Abdullah ibn Batta al-Ta'i killed him.
Abu al-Faraj said — after mentioning the killing of Muhammad and Awn —: Awn was killed by Abdullah ibn Qatna al-Tayhani. And Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib — Yahya ibn al-Hasan mentioned, as Ahmad ibn Sa'id informed me on his authority, that he was killed alongside al-Husayn (peace be upon him) at Karbala (2).
They said: Then the brothers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) came forward, resolved to die in his defense. The first of them to go out was Abu Bakr ibn Ali (peace be upon him), whose name was Ubaydullah, and his mother was Layla, daughter of Mas'ud ibn Khalid ibn Rib'i al-Tamimiyya. He advanced, chanting:
My elder is Ali, of the tallest pride,
from Hashim of truth, the noble, the most favored.
This is Hussein, son of the sent Prophet —
for him we defend with the polished blade.
I ransom him with my soul, a brother held in honor.
He kept fighting until Zahr ibn Badr al-Nakha'i killed him. It is said: Abdullah ibn Uqba al-Ghanawi. And Abu Ja'far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) mentioned that a man from Hamdan killed him.

They said: Then after him came forth his brother Umar ibn Ali (peace be upon him), and he charged upon Zahr, his brother's killer, and killed him. Then he faced the people and began striking with his sword a fearsome striking, saying:
Away, you enemies of God, away from Umar!
Away from the scowling, grim-faced lion,
who strikes you with his sword and does not flee,
and is no coward cowering in his hole.
He kept fighting until he was killed.
Then after him came forth his brother Uthman ibn Ali (peace be upon him), and his mother was Umm al-Banin, daughter of Hizam ibn Khalid of Banu Kilab, and he was saying:
I am Uthman, the one of glories,
my elder is Ali, of manifest deeds,
and the cousin of the pure Prophet.
My brother is Hussein, the choicest of the choice,
and the master of the great and the small,
after the Messenger and the helping heir.
Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi shot him in his forehead, and he fell from his horse, and a man from Banu Aban ibn Hazim severed his head.
Abu al-Faraj narrated from Ubaydullah ibn al-Hasan and Abdullah ibn al-Abbas, who said: Uthman ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of twenty-one. Al-Dahhak, with his chain of narration, said: Khawli ibn Yazid shot Uthman ibn Ali (peace be upon him) with an arrow and felled him, then a man from Banu Aban Darim charged upon him and took his head. And it is narrated from Ali (peace be upon him) that he said: I named him after my brother Uthman ibn Maz'un (1).
They said: Then after him came forth his brother Ja'far ibn Ali (peace be upon him), and his mother was Umm al-Banin as well, and he was saying:
I am Ja'far, the one of high deeds,
son of Ali the good, the bountiful.
My uncle and my maternal uncle suffice me as honor.
I defend Hussein, the generous, the most excellent.
Then he fought, and Khawli al-Asbahi shot him and struck his temple, or his eye.

Then his brother Abdullah ibn Ali (peace be upon him) came forward, saying:
I am the son of the one of courage and bounty,
that is Ali the good, of mighty deeds,
the sword of the Messenger of God, the one of vengeance,
in every people, manifest in his terrors.
Hani' ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami killed him.
Abu al-Faraj narrated from Ubaydullah ibn al-Hasan and Abdullah ibn al-Abbas, who said: Abdullah ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of twenty-five, and he left no offspring. And Ja'far ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed at the age of nineteen.
And from Dahhak al-Mashriqi, who said: Al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him) said to his full brother, Abdullah ibn Ali (peace be upon him): Go forward before me, that I may behold you and count you among my losses, for you have no children. So he went forward before him, and Hani' ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami charged upon him and killed him.
And it is narrated that al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him) sent his brother Ja'far forward before him, and Hani' ibn Thubayt — the one who killed his brother — charged upon him and killed him.
And Nasr ibn Muzahim narrated from Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them both) that Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi killed Ja'far ibn Ali (peace be upon him).
Then he said: And Muhammad al-Asghar, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) — his mother was an umm walad — was killed, according to Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), by a man from Tamim of Banu Aban ibn Darim (1).
The learned al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: In some of the works of our companions, it is recorded that when al-Abbas (peace be upon him) saw al-Husayn's solitude, he came to his brother and said: O my brother, is there any permission? Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) wept bitterly, then said: O my brother, you are the bearer of my banner, and if you go, my army will scatter! Al-Abbas said: My breast has grown narrow and I have wearied of this life, and I wish to seek my vengeance from these hypocrites.

(387)
Al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: Then seek for these children a little water. So al-Abbas went and admonished them and warned them, but it availed nothing. He returned to his brother and informed him, and he heard the children crying out: Thirst! Thirst! So he mounted his horse, took his spear and the waterskin, and headed toward the Euphrates. Four thousand of those appointed to guard the Euphrates surrounded him and shot at him with arrows, but he scattered them and killed eighty men of them, as is narrated, until he entered the water.
When he wished to drink a handful of the water, he remembered the thirst of al-Husayn and his household, so he cast away the water, filled the waterskin, and carried it upon his right shoulder, heading toward the tent. They blocked his way and surrounded him from every side. He fought them until Nawfal al-Azraq struck his right hand and cut it off. So he carried the waterskin upon his left shoulder, and Nawfal struck him and cut off his left hand at the wrist. So he carried the waterskin with his teeth, and an arrow came and struck the waterskin, spilling its water. Then another arrow came and struck his chest. He toppled from his horse and cried out to his brother al-Husayn: Reach me! When he came to him, he found him slain, and he wept and carried him to the tent.
They said: When al-Abbas was killed, al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: Now my back is broken and my means are few (1).
Abu al-Faraj, Muhammad ibn Abi Talib, and others said: Then al-Qasim ibn al-Hasan (peace be upon him) came forth — and he was a small boy who had not yet reached puberty. When al-Husayn looked at him having come out, he embraced him, and the two began to weep until they both fainted. Then al-Qasim asked al-Husayn's permission to fight, but al-Husayn refused to grant it. The boy kept kissing his hands and his feet until he permitted him. So he went out, his tears flowing down his cheeks, saying:
If you do not know me, I am the son of al-Hasan,
the grandson of the chosen, trusted Prophet.
This is Hussein, like a hostage held captive,
among people — may they never be given the rain of the clouds.
(388)
And his face was like a sliver of the moon. He fought fiercely until, despite his youth, he killed thirty-five men.
Humayd said: I was in the army of Ibn Sa'd, and I would look at this boy, upon him a shirt and a waist-wrapper, and two sandals, the thong of one of which had snapped — I do not forget that it was the left. Then Amr ibn Sa'd al-Azdi said: By God, I shall charge upon him. I said: Glory be to God! And what do you intend by that? By God, were he to strike me, I would not stretch out my hand against him. These whom you see, who have surrounded him, suffice. He said: By God, I shall do it. So he charged upon him, and no sooner had he turned than he struck the boy's head with the sword. The boy fell upon his face and cried out: O my uncle!
He said: Then al-Husayn came like a swooping falcon. He plunged through the ranks and charged the charge of a battle-lion, and struck Amr, his killer, with the sword. He shielded himself with his hand, and al-Husayn severed it from the elbow, and he screamed. Then al-Husayn drew aside from him, and the cavalry of the people of Kufa charged to rescue Amr from al-Husayn. They met them with their breasts, and they trampled Amr and wounded him with their hooves and crushed him until he died. When the dust cleared, there was al-Husayn standing over the boy's head as the boy kicked his foot, and al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: By God, it grieves your uncle that you should call upon him and he not answer you, or answer you but not aid you, or aid you but be of no avail to you. Away with a people who killed you.
Then he carried him, and it is as if I am still looking at the boy's feet, dragging upon the ground, with his chest laid against his chest. I said to myself: What is he doing? Then he came until he laid him among the slain of his household. Then he said: O God, number them precisely, slay them utterly, leave not one of them, and never forgive them. Be patient, O sons of my uncles; be patient, O my household; may you never see humiliation after this day.
He said: Then Abdullah ibn al-Hasan (peace be upon him), whom we mentioned first — and the more correct account is that he came out after al-Qasim — came forth, saying:
(389)
If you do not know me, I am the son of Haydar,
a lion of the thickets and a fierce, mighty lion,
upon the enemies like a roaring, icy wind.
He killed fourteen men, then Hani' ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami killed him, and his face turned black.
Abu al-Faraj said: Abu Ja'far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) used to mention that Harmala ibn Kahil al-Asadi killed him.
Then he said: And Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) — his mother was an umm walad — and in the report of Amr ibn Shimr, from Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), Uqba al-Ghanawi killed him (1).
They said: A boy came out with a pole from those tents in his hand, and in his ears were two pearls, and he was terrified, looking right and left, his earrings swaying. Hani' ibn Thubayt charged upon him and killed him. Then Shahrbanu began to look at him, unable to speak, like one stunned.
Then al-Husayn (peace be upon him) turned to his right and saw none of the men, and turned to his left and saw none. So Ali ibn al-Husayn, Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him), came out — and he was ill, unable even to lift his sword. Umm Kulthum called out behind him: O my son, come back! He said: O my aunt, let me fight before the son of the Messenger of God. Al-Husayn said: O Umm Kulthum, hold him, lest the earth be left empty of the offspring of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) (2).

the women and the children, he called out: Is there any defender to defend the sanctuaries of the Messenger of God? Is there any monotheist who fears God concerning us? Is there any rescuer who hopes in God by rescuing us? And the voices of the women rose in wailing. Then he (peace be upon him) went forward to the door of the tent and said: Hand me my infant son Ali, that I may bid him farewell. So they handed him the child.
Sheikh al-Mufid, may mercy be upon him, said: He called for his son Abdullah. They said: He began to kiss him, saying: Woe to these people when your grandfather Muhammad al-Mustafa is their adversary — the child in his lap — when Harmala ibn Kahil al-Asadi shot him with an arrow and slaughtered him in al-Husayn's lap. Al-Husayn caught his blood until his palm was filled, then cast it toward the sky.

An arrow came and struck his throat.
And in some of the noble narrations he (peace be upon him) said: O God, You are the witness against a people who have killed the one who most resembles Your Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). And he (peace be upon him) heard a voice saying: Leave him, O Hussein, for he has a wet nurse in Paradise. Then he (peace be upon him) dismounted from his horse and dug for him with the scabbard of his sword, and buried him soaked in his blood.
