and suckled at the breast of faith, and weaned upon Islam. You were pure in life and pure in death; yet the hearts of the believers are not at ease with your departure, nor do they doubt your life. So upon you be the peace of God and His good pleasure. I bear witness that you passed away upon that which your brother Yahya ibn Zakariya passed away upon.
Then he cast his gaze around the grave and said: Peace be upon you, O souls that have alighted in the courtyard of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and settled at his side. I bear witness that you established prayer, gave the alms, enjoined what is right, forbade what is wrong, struggled against the deniers, and worshipped God until certainty came to you. By Him who sent Muhammad with the truth, we have shared with you in that which you entered into.
Atiyya said: I said to Jabir: But how, when we have not descended into any valley, nor climbed any mountain, nor struck with a sword, while the people had their heads severed from their bodies, their children orphaned, and their wives widowed? He said to me: O Atiyya! I heard my beloved, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), say: Whoever loves a people will be raised with them, and whoever loves the deeds of a people shares in their deeds. By Him who sent Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) with the truth, my intention and the intention of my companions is upon that which al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions passed away upon (1).
Atiyya said: While we were thus, a dark mass appeared from the direction of Syria. I said: O Jabir! This is a dark mass that has appeared from the direction of Syria. So Jabir said to his servant: Go off to that dark mass and bring us news of it. If they are of the companions of Umar ibn Sa'd, then return to us so that we may take refuge in some shelter; and if it is Zayn al-Abidin, then you are free for the sake of God Most High.
He said: So the servant set off, and it was not long before he returned saying: O Jabir! Arise and go to meet the household of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). This is Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him), who has come with his aunts and sisters. So Jabir rose, walking barefoot, bareheaded, until he drew near to Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him). The Imam said: Are you Jabir? He said: Yes, O son of the Messenger of God. He said: O Jabir!

Here, by God, our men were slain, our children slaughtered, our women taken captive, and our tents burned (1).
In some narrations, the narrator said: They met at one and the same time, and took to weeping, wailing, and beating their breasts. They held the mourning assembly, and the women of the countryside gathered around them. Then Zainab came out among the gathering, reached for her collar and tore it, and cried out in a sorrowful voice that wounded the hearts: O my brother! O Hussein! O beloved of the Messenger of God! O son of Mecca and Mina! O son of Fatima al-Zahra! O son of Ali al-Murtada! Alas, alas, then alas! And she fell unconscious. The women gathered around her and sprinkled water upon her until she revived. And it is as though I see her crying out in the language of her state:
O you who dwell in Karbala, do you hold
any tidings of our slain — and what are their tokens?
What is the state of a dead body in your land,
that lay three days while none visited its resting place?
By God, did you bury it in the dust,
and have its bones settled in the graves?
And it is as though I hear someone answering her (peace be upon her):
They did not wash him, nor shroud him in any shroud
on the day of al-Tuff, nor lay any cloak over him.
He lay bare, with the horses trampling over him,
while the wind wove for him a flowing robe and mantle.
So they remained there three days, keeping to the holding of mourning and the shedding of flowing tears. Then after that, Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) ordered the mounts to be readied, and they readied them. Then Sukayna called out to the women to bid farewell to her father's grave, and they circled around the grave. Sukayna embraced her father's grave, wept bitterly, and grieved, and began to recite:
O Karbala, we entrust to you a body
buried without shroud and without washing.
O Karbala, we entrust to you a soul
belonging to Ahmad and the Trustee and the Faithful one.
Likewise Fatima the daughter of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) threw herself upon her father's grave, and wept bitterly until she fell unconscious.

It is narrated: It was said to Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him): Let the women take provision from their kin? He (peace be upon him) said: O people, you do not see what I see. I fear for my aunt Zainab that she may die, for she rises from one grave to another.
And when it was said to Zainab (peace be upon her): Arise, she said: To where? They said: To Medina. She said: And who is left for me in Medina? (2)

The Second Gathering
On the Merit of Visiting the Grave of Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
Among the narrations reported concerning the merit of visiting the master of martyrs, al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), is what is related from the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him): That Moses ibn Imran asked his Lord, mighty and majestic, to visit the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali, and he visited it with seventy thousand angels (3). And it is narrated from Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (peace be upon them) who said: Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) was asked about visiting the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and he said: My father informed me that whoever visits the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) recognizing his right, God records him among

Di'bil al-Khuza'i said, urging the visitation of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him):
Visit the best grave in Iraq that is visited,
and disobey the donkey — for whoever forbids you is a donkey.
Why should I not visit you, O Hussein, may I be your ransom,
with my people and those whom Nizar has favored?

and upon your enemy is loathing and ruin.

Husam al-Dawla Abu al-Shawk, Faris ibn Muhammad, may mercy be upon him, said concerning the visitation of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him):
O you who journey, rightly guided, to the land of Iraq,
give greetings — may you be kept safe — to the lordly Imam.
Convey to the Commander of the Faithful my salutation,
and mention to him my love and the sincerity of my affection.
And visit al-Hussein at Karbala and say to him:
O son of the Trustee, O scion of Ahmad,
they wronged you and violated your sanctuary by force,
and cast upon you the dreadful, calamitous deed.
Had I witnessed your aid at the first,
I would have quenched from them my lance and my Indian sword.
From me be peace upon you, O son of the Chosen one,
forever, going at evening and coming at morning,
and upon your father and your grandfather the Chosen one,
and those of them who dwell in the Baqi of al-Gharqad. (3)

Our master al-Baha'i, may mercy be upon him, said in the Kashkul: It is narrated that al-Hussein (peace be upon him) bought the lands in which his grave lies from the people of Nineveh and al-Ghadiriyya for sixty thousand dirhams, and gave it as charity

Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Dawud al-Qummi narrated from our master al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: The sanctuary of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) which he purchased is four miles by four miles. It is lawful for his children and his clients, forbidden to others among those who oppose them, and within it is blessing. The noble sayyid, al-Sayyid Radi al-Din ibn Tawus, mentioned that it became lawful only after the charity because they did not fulfill the condition. He said: Muhammad ibn Dawud narrated their failure to fulfill the condition in the chapter on rare narrations of visitations (1).
Harun ibn Kharija narrated, saying: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: God has appointed over the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) four thousand angels, disheveled and dust-covered, weeping for him until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever visits it recognizing his right, they escort him until they bring him to his place of safety; if he falls ill, they visit him morning and evening; and if he dies, they attend his funeral and ask forgiveness for him until the Day of Resurrection (2).
Also among what has come concerning the merit of visiting al-Hussein (peace be upon him) is what Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from al-Hussein ibn Thuwayr ibn Abi Fakhita, who said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: O Hussein! Whoever leaves his home intending to visit the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), if he is walking, a good deed is recorded for him with every step, and a sin is erased from him, until, when he reaches the precinct, God records him among the successful and the triumphant; until, when he completes his rites, God records him among the victorious; until, when he wishes to depart, an angel comes to him and says: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) sends you his greetings and says to you: Begin your deeds anew, for what is past has been forgiven you.
And it is narrated from Abdullah ibn al-Tamahan, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: There is no one on the Day of Resurrection but that he wishes he were among the visitors of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), because of

what he sees of the honor bestowed by God upon the visitors of al-Hussein (1).

How well the poet spoke when he said:
If you desire salvation, then visit Hussein,
that you may meet God with delighted eyes.
For the Fire does not touch a body
upon which is the dust of the visitors of al-Hussein.
Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) who said: One day al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) was in the lap of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), who was playing with him and making him laugh. Aisha said: O Messenger of God, how greatly you delight in this child! He said to her: Woe to you! How could I not love him and delight in him, when he is the fruit of my heart and the coolness of my eye? Indeed, my community will kill him, and whoever visits him after his death, God will record for him one of my pilgrimages. She said: O Messenger of God, one of your pilgrimages? He said: Yes, and two of my pilgrimages. She said: O Messenger of God, two of your pilgrimages? He said: Yes, and four. He said: And it kept increasing, and he kept adding and multiplying, until it reached ninety pilgrimages of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), with their full reward (2).
And from Zayd al-Shahham who said: I said to Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him): What is there for one who visits al-Hussein (peace be upon him)? He said: He is like one who has visited God upon His throne. I said: What is there for one who visits any of you? He said: He is like one who has visited the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) (3). And from Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) who said: Command our Shia to visit the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), for coming to it increases provision, prolongs life, and wards off evils, and coming to it is an obligation upon every believer who acknowledges al-Hussein's Imamate from God.
And from Mansur ibn Hazim who said: We heard him say: Whoever lets a whole year pass without coming to the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), God shall diminish a year from his life; and were I to say that one of you dies before his appointed time

by thirty years, I would be speaking truthfully, and that is because you forsake visiting al-Hussein (peace be upon him). So do not abandon visiting him — God will prolong your lives and increase your provisions; and if you forsake visiting him, God will diminish your lives and your provisions. So compete with one another in visiting him, and do not abandon it, for al-Hussein will be a witness for you in that before God, before His Messenger, before the Commander of the Faithful, and before Fatima (peace be upon them) (1).
Also among what has come concerning the merit of visiting Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) is what Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Mu'awiya ibn Wahb, who said: I sought permission to enter upon Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), and I was told: Enter. So I entered and found him at his place of prayer in his house. I sat until he finished his prayer, and I heard him conversing intimately with his Lord, saying: O God, O You who has favored us with honor, promised us intercession, singled us out with the trusteeship, granted us the knowledge of what has passed and the knowledge of what remains, and made the hearts of people incline toward us — forgive me and my brethren, and the visitors of the grave of Abu Abdullah al-Hussein, those who spent their wealth and exerted their bodies, desiring our kindness, hoping for what is with You in our connection, bringing joy to Your Prophet, in response to our command, and to enrage our enemy. By that they sought Your good pleasure, so reward them on our behalf with Your good pleasure, guard them by night and by day, and be the best successor to their families and children whom they left behind. Accompany them, suffice them against the evil of every obstinate tyrant, against every weak and strong one of Your creation, and against the evil of the devils among humans and jinn. Grant them the best of what they hoped from You in their estrangement from their homelands, and in what they preferred us over their sons, families, and kindred.
O God, our enemies reproached them for their setting out, yet that did not deter them from journeying to us, in defiance of those who oppose us. So have mercy on those faces that the sun has altered, and have mercy on those cheeks that turn upon the grave of Abu Abdullah al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and have mercy on those eyes whose tears flowed in compassion for us, and have mercy on those hearts that grieved and burned for us, and have mercy on that cry that was raised for us. O God, I entrust to You those bodies and those

The first to visit the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (may God be pleased with him). He met, at one and the same time, with Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) together with his aunts and sisters. They took to weeping, wailing, and beating their breasts, and held the mourning assembly. The women of the countryside gathered around them, and Zainab came out among the gathering, reached for her collar and tore it, and cried out in a sorrowful voice that wounded the hearts: O my brother! O Hussein! How well did the proof-bearer, Sheikh Ali al-Jishi, may mercy be upon him, speak when he said:

I shall not forget when they returned, bereaved and grieving,
and her heart yearned toward al-Tuff.
Nothing drew her longing to al-Tuff but the resting places
of her youths who alighted there, and the graves.
She turned aside, heading for the slaying-grounds of her people,
to renew a covenant there and to visit.
And when the markers of Karbala's expanse appeared,
a wail rose from her, and her sighing went on.
She circled those graves with a cry,
as pilgrims circle, while the hearts seethed.
She could not utter the greeting from weeping,
so she went, pointing with the greeting toward them.
She asked the dwellers nothing but in anguish, for indeed
the fragrance had guided her visitors to the visited one.
She collapsed upon those graves as though
they were birds collapsing, struck by the midday heat.

She went on smelling the dust out of longing, while there poured
for her eyes from which an overflowing stream gushed.
O our beloved, the dust has come between us,
yet no thought nor mind has been emptied of you.
O our beloved, how do the graves enclose you?
When did full moons ever vanish in the belly of graves?
O our beloved, if weeping could bring back the dead,
seas would have flowed from the molten heart. (74)

The Third Gathering
On That With Which God Most High Compensated Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
It is stated in the Ziyarat al-Nahiya (peace be upon him) from Imam al-Hujja (peace be upon him): Peace be upon al-Hussein who gave his soul generously with his lifeblood. Peace be upon him who obeyed God in his secret and his open conduct. Peace be upon him in whose dust healing has been placed. Peace be upon him beneath whose dome supplications are answered. Peace be upon him whose progeny are the Imams (1).
(1) .
It is stated in the Amali of Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, from Muhammad ibn Muslim who said: I heard Abu Ja'far and Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) say: God Most High compensated al-Hussein (peace be upon him) for his slaying by placing the Imamate in his progeny, healing in his dust, the answering of supplication at his grave, and the days of his visitors — going and returning — are not counted [against their lifespan].
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: So I said to Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him): These bounties are attained through al-Hussein (peace be upon him); but what is there for him in himself? He said: God Most High joined him to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), so he was with him in his rank and his station. Then Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) recited: "And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith — We will join

It is narrated from Abu Bakkar who said: I took some red clay from the dust at the head of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), and I entered upon al-Rida (peace be upon him) and presented it to him. He took it in his palm, then smelled it, then wept until his tears flowed, and then said: This is the dust of my grandfather.
And it is narrated from Jabir al-Ju'fi who said: I heard Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) say: The clay of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) is a healing from every ailment and a safety from every fear, and it is [effective] for that for which it is taken (2).
The author of al-Mazar al-Kabir narrated by his chain, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Thaqafi, from his father, from al-Sadiq Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) who said: Fatima the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) had a prayer-bead string made of twisted wool thread, knotted with the number of the takbirs, and she (peace be upon her) would turn it with her hand, declaring God's greatness and glorifying Him, until Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib was killed, whereupon she used his dust and made prayer-beads, and the people used them. Then when al-Hussein, the blessings of God be upon him, was killed, the matter was transferred to him, and they used his dust for the merit and distinction in it.
He also said in al-Mazar al-Kabir: It is narrated that the houris of Paradise, when they behold one of the angels descending to the earth for some matter, ask of him as a gift the prayer-beads and dust made from the clay of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) (3).
Mu'awiya ibn Ammar narrated, saying: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) had a pouch of yellow brocade containing the dust of Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), and when the time of prayer came, he would pour it upon his prayer-mat and prostrate upon it. Then he (peace be upon him) said: Prostration upon the dust of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) pierces the seven veils (4).

The Fourth Gathering
Al-Mutawakkil's Plowing of the Grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
and What Befell the Grave of Oppression and Aggression
It is narrated from Imam al-Rida, from his forefathers (peace be upon them), who said: Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them) said: It is as though I see the palaces built around the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and as though I see the markets surrounding his grave; then the days and nights shall not pass before people journey to it from the distant lands. And that will be at the ending of the rule of the Banu Marwan (2).

A dome that was the adornment of the Throne within it —
nay, it is the Throne, not the one in its heavens.
Within it was al-Hussein, lord of the lofty stations,
heir of knowledge from the time of its prophets.
He is the one from whom the Imams descended,
and they are the masters of mankind, its intercessors.
So upon him the Lord of the heavens has blessed,
a blessing without end to its extent. (1).

Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Qudama ibn Za'ida, from his father, from Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), in a tradition of his concerning the visitation of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), he said: Rejoice, then rejoice, then rejoice, for I shall surely tell you of a tiding I held among the treasured stores. When there befell us at al-Tuff what befell us, and my father (peace be upon him) was killed, and those with him of his children, brothers, and the rest of his family were killed, and his womenfolk and women were carried upon the camel-saddles, intending to bring us to Kufa — I kept looking at them fallen, and not yet buried, and that grew great in my breast, and my anxiety intensified at what I saw of them, until my soul nearly departed. My aunt Zainab, the eldest daughter of Ali (peace be upon her), perceived that from me and said: Why do I see you giving up your soul, O remnant of my grandfather, my father, and my brothers? I said: How should I not be distressed and anxious, when I see my master, my brothers, my uncles, and the sons of my uncle, and my family, soaked in their blood, cast out in the open, stripped, neither shrouded nor buried, none turning to them, no human drawing near them, as though they were a household of the Daylam and the Khazar.
She said: Let not what you see distress you, for by God, that is a covenant from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) to your grandfather, your father, and your uncle. And God has taken a covenant from certain people of this community whom the tyrants of this earth do not recognize, but who are known among the people of the heavens, that they shall gather these scattered limbs and bury them, and these blood-soaked bodies, and shall raise at this al-Tuff a marker for the grave of your father, the master of martyrs — its trace shall not be effaced, nor its sign worn away through the passing of nights and days. And the leaders of unbelief and the partisans of misguidance shall strive earnestly to erase it and obliterate it, yet its trace shall only increase in prominence, and its affair only in

Among the established historical facts that cannot be denied is the assault of al-Mutawakkil the Abbasid, the Nasibi (2), the denier of the right of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), upon the grave of the master of martyrs, Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him). He first set about forbidding the people from visiting his noble grave, punishing with death anyone who visited it; yet despite this, he found them insistent upon maintaining his visitation and kissing his pure dust. But he found them devoting themselves utterly to coming to his noble grave, even if it cost them their lives. And when he saw that the people would not desist at his prohibition, nor heed it, he set about demolishing the noble grave. He was not content with that, but proceeded to plow it up and lay it waste, uprooting the chest that was around it and burning it, and channeling water over it, so that the place of the bricks caved in and became like a trench. He did all of this in order to obliterate its landmarks for its visitors and lovers, and to erase his memory. But how could that be possible for him? And even if he managed to lay waste the noble grave and demolish it, how could he ever remove al-Hussein's love from the hearts of his Shia and the souls of his lovers?
Al-Mas'udi said: Before the caliphate of al-Muntasir, the family of Abu Talib were in a great trial and in fear for their lives. They had been forbidden from visiting the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and al-Ghari in the land of Kufa. Likewise others of their Shia were forbidden from attending these shrines. The order for this came from al-Mutawakkil in the year 236. In that year, he commanded the one known as al-Dizaj to proceed to the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) and demolish it, efface its ground, and remove its trace, and to punish anyone found there. He offered great rewards to whoever would advance upon this grave, but each one feared the punishment and held back. So al-Dizaj took up a hoe and demolished the upper part of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), whereupon the workmen advanced upon it. They reached the pit and the place of the burial niche but found in it no trace of remains or anything else. Matters continued

as we have mentioned until al-Muntasir succeeded to the caliphate (1).
Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani narrated, in his account of the days of al-Mutawakkil and those of the family of Abu Talib (peace be upon him) who came forth in them and were killed or imprisoned, saying: Al-Mutawakkil was severe in his oppression of the family of Abu Talib, harsh toward their community, preoccupied with their affairs, intense in his rage and rancor against them, and full of ill suspicion and accusation toward them. It happened that his vizier Ubaydullah ibn Yahya ibn Khaqan held an evil opinion of them, and made vile conduct toward them seem fair to him, so that he reached, in his treatment of them, what none of the Abbasid caliphs before him had reached. Among that was that he plowed up the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and effaced its traces, and placed guard-posts upon all the roads, so that they would find no one who had visited it but they brought him to al-Mutawakkil, who would kill him or punish him severely.
He said: And he sent a man among his companions called al-Dizaj — who was a Jew, then embraced Islam — to the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and ordered him to plow up his grave, efface it, and ruin all that was around it. So he proceeded to that, ruined what was around it, demolished the building, and plowed up an area around it of about two hundred jaribs. But when he reached the grave itself, no one would advance upon it. So he brought a group of Jews who plowed it up, channeled water around it, and stationed guard-posts at it, between every two guard-posts a mile, so that no visitor would visit it but they seized him and dispatched him to al-Mutawakkil.
He said: Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Ishnani related to me, saying: My contact with the visitation had grown distant in those days out of fear. Then I resolved to risk my life in it, and a man of the perfumers aided me in that. So we set out as visitors, hiding by day and traveling by night, until we came to the outskirts of al-Ghadiriyya. We left it at midnight and traveled between two guard-posts while [the guards] were asleep, until we came to the grave, but it was hidden from us. So we began to smell it out and seek its direction until we came to it. The chest that had been around it had been uprooted and burned, and water had been channeled over it, so that the place of the bricks had caved in and become like a trench. We visited it and threw ourselves upon it, and smelled from it a fragrance the like of which I had never smelled,

even of any perfume. I said to the perfumer who was with me: What fragrance is this? He said: No, by God, I have never smelled the like of it from any perfume. So we bade it farewell, and set markers around the grave in several places. Then when al-Mutawakkil was killed, we gathered with a group of the Talibis and the Shia until we came to the grave, brought out those markers, and restored it to what it had been.
He appointed over Medina and Mecca Umar ibn al-Faraj al-Rukhaji, who forbade the family of Abu Talib from exposing themselves to ask of the people, and forbade the people from showing kindness to them. It would not reach him that anyone had shown any kindness to any of them, however small, but he would punish him severely and burden him with heavy fines, until a single shirt would be shared among a group of Alawi women, each one praying in it in turn, then they would patch it and sit at their spinning, bare and uncovered — until al-Mutawakkil was killed. Then al-Muntasir showed kindness to them and treated them well, and dispatched wealth that he distributed among them. He used to prefer opposing his father in all his affairs, and contradicting his way as a reproach against him and in support of his [own] conduct (1).
Al-Tabari said, concerning the events of the year 236: In it, al-Mutawakkil ordered the demolition of the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them), the demolition of the dwellings and houses around it, and that the site of his grave be plowed, sown, and watered, and that the people be prevented from coming to it. It is mentioned that the agent of the chief of police proclaimed in the region: Whoever we find at his grave after three days, we will dispatch him to the dungeon. So the people fled and refrained from going to it, and that place was plowed and what was around it was sown (2).
Ibn Kathir said: Then began the year 236, in which al-Mutawakkil ordered the demolition of the grave of al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them) and the dwellings and houses around it, and it was proclaimed among the people: Whoever is found here after three days will be taken to the dungeon. So no human remained there, and that place was made into a farm to be plowed and cultivated (3). Hisham ibn al-Kalbi mentioned that when the water
