The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

in her hand, magnifying God and glorifying Him, until Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib was killed. Then she made use of his soil and fashioned rosaries from it, and the people used them. And when al-Hussein, the blessings of God be upon him, was killed, the practice was transferred to him, so they used his soil for the merit and excellence within it.
And he also said in al-Mazar al-Kabir: It is related that when the maidens of Paradise behold one of the angels descending to the earth for some matter, they ask him to bring them as a gift rosaries and soil from the clay of the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him).
And Mu'awiya ibn Ammar related, saying: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) had a yellow brocade pouch in which was the soil of Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him). And whenever the time of prayer came, he would pour it upon his prayer-mat and prostrate upon it. Then he (peace be upon him) said: Prostration upon the soil of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) pierces the seven veils.
And Ja'far ibn Isa related that he heard Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: There is no harm upon any of you, when the deceased has been buried and packed in with the soil, in placing facing his face a tablet of the clay of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), but he should not place it beneath his head(1).
And how excellent is the verse of Ibn al-Arandas, may God's mercy be upon him, when he says:
My Master was favored with three things, the like of which has never encompassed
any guardian—so who is Zayd there, and who is Amr?
He has a soil in which lies healing, and a dome
at which the supplicant is answered when harm befalls him,
and a radiant progeny from him—nine of them,
rightful Imams, neither eight nor ten.
Is Hussein to be slain thirsting at Karbala,
while in every joint of his fingertips there is a sea?
And his father is the one who pours the drink at the Pool tomorrow,
and Fatima, for whom the water of the Euphrates was a dowry?(2)
And another, may God's mercy be upon him, said:
A Master in whose soil lies healing, and beneath his
dome the supplication of every caller is heard;

Within it is the Imam, the father of the Imams, and he
is the meeting-place of prophethood and the Imamate.
The Thirteenth Gathering
The Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and Yahya ibn Zakariya (peace be upon him)
It is related in the visitation of Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (may God be pleased with him), on the day he visited al-Hussein (peace be upon him), that he said in his visitation: I bear witness that you are the son of the Seal of the Prophets, the son of the master of the believers, the son of the ally of piety, the descendant of guidance, the fifth of the People of the Cloak, the son of the master of the chiefs, and the son of Fatima, mistress of the women. And why should you not be so, when the hand of the master of the Messengers nourished you, and you were raised in the lap of the God-fearing, and suckled at the breast of faith, and weaned upon Islam? You were good in life and good in death—yet the hearts of the believers are not at peace over your parting, nor do they doubt the goodness of what was chosen for you. So upon you be the peace of God and His pleasure. And I bear witness that you passed away upon the same path as your brother Yahya ibn Zakariya(1).
It is related on the authority of Dawud ibn Farqad, who said: The sky turned red when al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed, for a year. Then he said: The heavens and the earth wept for al-Hussein ibn Ali and Yahya ibn Zakariya (peace be upon them both), and its redness was its weeping(2).
And on the authority of Abd al-Khaliq ibn Abd Rabbih, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say, concerning the words of God, mighty and majestic: "We have not made for him before any namesake"(3): He said: That is Yahya ibn Zakariya—there had been before him none with that name; and likewise al-Hussein (peace be upon him), there had been before him none with that name. And the sky wept only for the two of them, for forty mornings. I said: And what was its weeping? He said: The sun would rise red (and set red)(4).

(558)
And on the authority of Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: Truly, in the Fire there is a place that no one among mankind deserved except by the killing of al-Hussein ibn Ali and Yahya ibn Zakariya (peace be upon them both)(1).
And it is related on the authority of Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), who said: We set out with al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and he never made camp anywhere nor departed from it without mentioning Yahya ibn Zakariya. And one day he said: Among the signs of the world's worthlessness before God is that the head of Yahya was presented as a gift to a harlot among the harlots of the Children of Israel(2).
And on the authority of Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: Truly, when al-Hussein, the blessings of God be upon him, was killed, the heaven and the earth wept for him and turned red, and they never wept for anyone at all except for Yahya ibn Zakariya and al-Hussein ibn Ali, the blessings of God be upon them.
And on the authority of Abdullah ibn Hilal, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: Truly the sky wept for al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) and Yahya ibn Zakariya, and it wept for no one besides them. I said: And what was its weeping? He said: They remained for forty days during which the sun rose with redness and set with redness. I said: Is that its weeping? He said: Yes.
And on the authority of Muhammad al-Halabi, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), concerning the words of the Most High: "So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they given respite," he said: The sky wept for no one from the time Yahya ibn Zakariya was killed until al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, and then it wept for him.
And on the authority of Dawud ibn Farqad, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: The sky turned red when al-Hussein ibn Ali was killed, for a year. Then he said: The heaven and the earth wept for al-Hussein ibn Ali for a year, and for Yahya ibn Zakariya, and its redness was its weeping.
And on the authority of Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), who said: The sky wept for no one after Yahya ibn Zakariya except for al-Hussein ibn Ali, the blessings of God be upon them both, for it wept for him for forty days.

(559)
And on the authority of Amr ibn Thubayt, from his father, from Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him), who said: Truly the sky has not wept since it was set in place except for Yahya ibn Zakariya and al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both). I said: What sort of thing was its weeping? He said: Whenever it was faced with a garment, there would fall upon the garment something resembling the marks of fleas, of blood.
And on the authority of Hannan, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), in a tradition of his concerning the visitation of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), who said: But visit him and do not shun him, for he is the master of the youths of the martyrs, and the master of the youths of the people of Paradise, and the likeness of Yahya ibn Zakariya, and for the two of them the heaven and the earth wept.
And on the authority of al-Hasan ibn Ziyad, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: The killer of Yahya ibn Zakariya was a child of adultery, and the killer of al-Hussein was a child of adultery, and the sky wept for no one except the two of them. He said: I said: And how did it weep? He said: The sun rose with redness and set with redness.
And on the authority of Kathir ibn Shihab al-Harithi, who said: While we were sitting with the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) in the open courtyard, al-Hussein appeared, and Ali laughed until his back teeth showed. Then he said: God mentioned a people and said: "So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they given respite." By the One who split the seed and brought forth living souls, this one shall be killed, and the heaven and the earth shall weep for him(1).
And how excellent is the verse of Sheikh Kazim al-Azri, may God's mercy be upon him, when he says:
A calamity which, when you reflect upon it, eclipses its sun—
so the like of it is the greatest lesson for one who would learn.
And if the highest moon weeps for his slaughter,
then no moon ever wept save for a moon.
What eyes do not weep blood for you?
By God, you made even the eye-socket of the stone to weep.
O time, what is it with you, that you strike down every man of worth
and send the highest moon down into the pits?
You dragged the family of Ali in chains—do
these people have, in your sight, any unforgivable sin?
You left every proud lion among them
as prey between the fangs of the dog and the claw.

I have not forgotten, of the family of the Guide, the noble chieftains,
clad in dust, given turbid water to drink.
The spear-thrusts altered in them every limb
except their noble virtues, secure from change.
If time mourns their loss, it is no wonder—
it is fitting for the meadow to weep over the rain.(1)
The Fourteenth Gathering
God's Vengeance upon the Killers of the Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and Their Followers
at the Hands of the Imam, the Awaited Proof—may God hasten his noble relief
It is related in the Supplication of Lamentation (Du'a al-Nudba): Where is the reviver of the landmarks of the religion and its people? Where is the one who breaks the might of the transgressors? Where is the demolisher of the edifices of polytheism and hypocrisy? Where is the destroyer of the people of corruption and disobedience? Where is the reaper of the branches of error and discord? Where is the eraser of the traces of deviation and base desires? Where is the severer of the cords of lying and slander? Where is the destroyer of the people of obstinacy and rebellion? Where is the one who gives honor to the friends of God and humiliation to the enemies? Where is the gatherer of the word upon piety? Where is the Gate of God through which He is approached? Where is the Face of God toward which the friends of God turn? Where is the connecting link between earth and heaven? Where is the master of the Day of Victory and the unfurler of the banner of guidance? Where is the uniter of the scattered ranks of righteousness and contentment? Where is the one who will seek vengeance for the blood of the prophets and the sons of the prophets? Where is the one who will seek vengeance for the blood of the one slain at Karbala?(2)
And it is related in the Visitation of the Region (al-Ziyara al-Nahiya), narrated from the Imam, the Awaited Proof—may God Almighty hasten his noble relief—he (peace be upon him) said: So even if the ages delay me, and the decree prevents me from coming to your aid, and I was not one to wage war against those who warred against you, nor to set myself in enmity against those who set themselves in enmity against you, then I shall surely lament you morning and evening, and I shall surely weep for you—in place of tears—blood, out of anguish over you, and grief and sorrow over what befell you,

until I die from the agony of the affliction and the choking of despair(1).
O Master of the Age, save us, for we have
no pleasant drink, nor any life of ease.
The nights of waiting have grown long upon us—so will there be,
O son of the Pure One, a morning for the night of waiting?
So anoint with your radiant countenance, for us, eyes
upon whose pupils blindness almost comes.
Here we are, a target for the arrows of calamities—and does
patience avail when the rings of its armor have worn thin?
How long shall the gathering of the oppressors against you be united,
while your gathering is scattered by the hands of your enemies?
So arise—may the remnants of souls be ransom for you—
souls that misfortunes have seized when their endurance failed them.
Suppose your host is small in number—yet your grandfather
met with seventy against an army beyond counting.
It is related from the Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said—in a tradition of his with al-Mufaddal ibn Umar concerning the rising of the Imam, the Proof (peace be upon him): So they shall remain in this state until the Qa'im (peace be upon him) arises. And when the Qa'im arises, they shall meet together at the grave of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), until he comes to Karbala. Then there shall remain no one, of the heavens or of the earth, among the believers, but he shall surround him, visiting him, shaking his hand, and sitting with him upon the throne. O Mufaddal! This, by God, is the elevation above which there is nothing, beneath which there is nothing, and beyond which there is no object of seeking for any seeker(2).
And Sheikh al-Saduq, may God's mercy be upon him, related, on the authority of Abu Hamza Thabit ibn Dinar al-Thumali, who said: I asked Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir (peace be upon him): O son of the Messenger of God! Why was Ali (peace be upon him) named Commander of the Faithful—a name by which no one before him was named, and which is permitted to no one after him? He said: Because he is the provision-store of knowledge; from him is provision drawn, and he draws provision from no one else. He said: So I said: O son of the Messenger of God! Why was his sword named Dhu al-Fiqar? He (peace be upon him) said: Because he never struck with it anyone of God's creation but that he impoverished him in this world of his family and his children, and impoverished him in the Hereafter of Paradise.
He said: So I said: O son of the Messenger of God! Are you not all of you those who uphold the truth? He said: Indeed. I said:

(562)
Then why was the Qa'im named the Qa'im (the One who Rises)? He said: When my grandfather al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, the angels cried out to God Most High with weeping and wailing, and said: Our God and our Master! Will You neglect those who killed Your chosen one and the son of Your chosen one, the choicest of Your creation? So God, mighty and majestic, revealed to them: Be at peace, My angels. For by My might and My majesty, I shall surely take vengeance upon them, even if after a while. Then God, mighty and majestic, unveiled to the angels the Imams from the descendants of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and the angels rejoiced at that. And behold, one of them was standing in prayer, and God, mighty and majestic, said: Through that one who stands (al-Qa'im) I shall take vengeance upon them(1).
And it is related on the authority of al-Harawi, who said: I said to Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (peace be upon him): O son of the Messenger of God! What do you say concerning a tradition narrated from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: When the Qa'im rises, he will kill the offspring of the killers of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) for the deeds of their forefathers? He (peace be upon him) said: It is so. So I said: But the words of God, mighty and majestic: "And no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another"(2)—what is their meaning? He said: God speaks truly in all His words. But the offspring of the killers of al-Hussein are pleased with the deeds of their forefathers and boast of them, and whoever is pleased with a thing is as one who did it. And if a man were killed in the East and a man in the West were pleased with his killing, then the one pleased would, in the sight of God, mighty and majestic, be a partner of the killer. And the Qa'im (peace be upon him) will kill them when he rises only for their being pleased with the deeds of their forefathers. He said: I said to him: With what will the Qa'im among you begin when he rises? He said: He will begin with the Banu Shayba and cut off their hands, for they are the thieves of the House of God, mighty and majestic(3).
And it is related on the authority of Sama'a ibn Mihran, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), concerning the words of Him, blessed and most high: "So there shall be no hostility except against the wrongdoers"(4)—he said: The children of the killers of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)(5).
And how excellent is the verse of Ibn al-Arandas, may God's mercy be upon him, when he says:

For the taking of vengeance there is none but a Caliph
in whose justice there is mending for the breaking of the religion.
The angels surround him from every side,
and before him march good fortune, glory, and victory.
His spears are lances thrust into the armored foe,
his chamberlain is Jesus, and his watchman al-Khidr.
The turban of his grandfather truly shades him
when the proud kings are shaded by tyranny.
His breast encompasses the knowledge of prophethood—
so blessed is the knowledge that breast contains!
He is the son of the Imam al-Askari, Muhammad the
pious, the pure, the immaculate, the banner, the great scholar.
Descendant of Ali al-Hadi, and scion of Muhammad
al-Jawad, and one whose grave lies in the land of Tus—
Ali al-Rida, who is the son of Musa, who passed away,
so from his fragrance there wafted perfume over Baghdad.
And the keeper of true promise—for he is the scion of al-Sadiq,
an Imam through whom pride itself takes pride in knowledge.
And the splendor of our master, the Imam Muhammad,
an Imam who has deep penetration into the knowledge of the prophets.
A descendant of Zayn al-Abidin, who wept
so that from his tears the dried herbs grew green.
Scion of Hussein the Fatimid, and of Haydar the
Legatee—so from purity that purity grew.
He has al-Hasan the poisoned as an uncle—how excellent the
Imam whose overflowing bounty embraced all creation!
Namesake of the Messenger of God, inheritor of his knowledge,
an Imam upon whose forefathers the Remembrance came down.(1)

And Sheikh al-Saduq, may God's mercy be upon him, related, on the authority of al-Rayyan ibn Shabib—in a tradition of his from our master the Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him)—that he said to him: O son of Shabib! If you would weep for anything, then weep for al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), for he was slaughtered as the ram is slaughtered, and eighteen men of his household were killed along with him, who had no equals on the earth. And the seven heavens and the earths wept for his killing. And there descended to the earth four thousand of the angels to aid him, but they were not permitted, and they remain at his grave, disheveled and dust-covered, until the Qa'im (peace be upon him) rises, when they will be among his helpers,

and their slogan is: O avengers of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)!.. (1)
And it is related in the Book of Visitation by Muhammad ibn al-Mashhadi—may God make sweet his resting place—in the visitation of the Imam, the Proof (peace be upon him): Peace be upon the Imam, the Knowing One, absent from sight yet present in the lands, hidden from the eyes yet present in the thoughts; the remnant of the chosen ones, the inheritor of Dhu al-Fiqar; who will appear at the veiled House of God and call out with the slogan: O avengers of al-Hussein! I am the seeker of retribution; I am the breaker of every tyrant; I am the Proof of God against every ungrateful traitor—the Qa'im, the Awaited One, the son of al-Hasan—upon him and his family be the most excellent peace. O God, hasten his relief, ease his coming forth, broaden his path, and make us among his helpers and his supporters who defend him, who strive in his way, and who attain martyrdom before him(2).
And how excellent is the verse of Sayyid Ja'far al-Hilli, may God's mercy be upon him, when he says:

for separation from one near in dwelling is hard.
When shall we see your white blades sharpened,
their color clear as water, yet they are fire?
When shall we see your steeds marked
with victory, racing and raising the dust?
When shall we see the banners unfurled
over champions whom the wastelands cannot contain?
When shall we see your face among us
like the sun, shining after long concealment?
When shall we see the mighty of Banu Ghalib
calling for battle, "Haste! Haste!"(3)

And on the authority of al-Fudayl ibn Yasar, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said in a tradition of his concerning the Master of the Age (peace be upon him): He has a treasure at Talaqan—not of gold, nor of silver—and a banner that has not been unfurled since it was folded, and men whose hearts are as if of forged iron, untainted by doubt concerning the essence of God, harder than stone. they were sent against the mountains, they would level them. They aim their banners at no city but that they destroy it. It is as if upon their steeds are eagles. They wipe themselves with the Imam's saddle (peace be upon him), seeking thereby blessing, and they surround him, shielding him with their own selves in the wars and sparing him whatever he wishes among them. Men who do not sleep at night, who have a murmur in their prayer like the murmur of bees. They spend the night standing on their feet, and rise in the morning upon their steeds—monks by night, lions by day. They are more obedient to him than the bondmaid to her master; like lamps, as if their hearts were lanterns; and out of fear of God they are anxious. They call out for martyrdom and yearn to be killed in the way of God. Their slogan is: O avengers of al-Hussein! When they march, terror travels before them the distance of a month's journey. They march to their Master in throngs. Through them God gives victory to the Imam of truth (peace be upon him)(1).

So sharpen the edge of your keen sword and uproot
unbelief with it, slaying both the small and the great.
Hasten—may my soul be your ransom—and heal with it,
from your enemies' rage, hearts that are burning.
Justice has departed, and the pillar of guidance
has been demolished, while tyranny tramples upon the faith.
Come to the aid—may God protect you, O Helper—
of a flock to whom the wastelands have grown narrow.
So here are the hearts of mankind—turn them over,
hearts that longing has melted from waiting.
When will you draw the white blades from their sheaths,
level the brown spears, and protect what must be guarded,
among young men for whom piety is a nature,
and "O avengers of al-Hussein!" the slogan,
as if death, to them, were a beautiful maiden,
life a dowry, and the severed heads the scattered coins.(2)

The Fifteenth Gathering
On God Almighty's Vengeance upon the Killers of the Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
It is related on the authority of Ata ibn Muslim, who said: al-Suddi said: I came to Karbala to sell wheat there, and an old man of the tribe of Tayyi prepared a meal for us, and we ate supper at his place. We then mentioned the killing of al-Hussein (peace be upon him). I said: No one took part in his killing but that he died the worst of deaths. He said: How great liars you are, O people of Iraq! For I am among those who took part in that. And we had scarcely moved before he drew near the lamp to mend it while it was burning, and he went to pull out the wick with his finger, but the fire caught it. He began to extinguish it with his saliva, and the fire seized his beard, so he ran and threw himself into the water—and I saw him as if he were a piece of charcoal(1).
And al-Mada'ini related, on the authority of al-Qasim ibn al-Asbagh ibn Nubata, who said: I saw a man of the Banu Aban ibn Darim with a blackened face, and I had known him to be handsome, intensely white of complexion. So I said to him: I scarcely recognized you. He said: I killed a beardless youth along with al-Hussein, between whose eyes was the mark of prostration. And I have not slept a single night since I killed him but that he comes to me, seizes me by the collar, and brings me to Hellfire and casts me into it, and I scream—and no one remains in the quarter but he hears my screaming. He said: And the one slain was al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him)(2).
And Musa ibn Amir said: He (that is, al-Mukhtar) dispatched Mu'adh ibn Hani' ibn Adi al-Kindi, the nephew of Hujr, and dispatched Abu Amra, the commander of his guard. They proceeded until they had surrounded the house of Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi—he being the one who held the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), the one who brought it. He hid himself in his privy. So Mu'adh ordered Abu Amra to search for him in the house. His wife came out to them, and they said to her: Where is your husband? She said: I do not know where he is—and she pointed with her hand toward the privy. So they entered

and found that he had placed a basket over his head. So they brought him out. And al-Mukhtar had been riding through Kufa, and then he came following his companions. Abu Amra had sent a messenger to him, and al-Mukhtar met the messenger at the house of Abu Bilal, with Ibn Kamil accompanying him, and the messenger informed him of the news.
So al-Mukhtar came toward them, and he confronted him and turned him back until he killed him beside his family. Then he called for fire and burned him with it, and did not leave until he had become ash. Then he departed from him. And his wife was from Hadramawt; she was called al-Ayuf bint Malik ibn Nahar ibn Aqrab, and she had set herself in enmity against him from the time he brought the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)(1).
And among what is related concerning the evil end of Bahr ibn Ka'b, may God Almighty curse him—he who stripped the garment of al-Hussein (peace be upon him): Some of the narrators said concerning that: When al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was left with three or four men, he called for fine trousers that gleamed to the eye, of refined Yemeni cloth, and he tore them and frayed them so that no one would strip them from him. One of his companions said to him: Were you to wear beneath them an undergarment? He (peace be upon him) said: That is a garment of humiliation, and it is not fitting for me to wear it. He said: So when he was killed, Bahr ibn Ka'b came and stripped him of them and left him bare. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman said: Truly the hands of Bahr ibn Ka'b would, in winter, drip with water, and in summer would be as if they were dry wood(2).
And Umara ibn Umayr said: When the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad and those of his companions were brought and set up in the mosque in the open courtyard, I came up to them while they were saying: It has come! And behold, a serpent had come, weaving its way through the heads until it entered the nostril of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. It stayed a little while, then came out, and went off until it vanished. Then they said: It has come, it has come! And it did that two or three times(3).

And it is related on the authority of Zurara, who said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said—in a tradition of his: O Zurara! No woman among us applied henna, nor anointed herself, nor applied kohl, nor combed her hair, until the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad—may God curse him—was brought to us. And we remained in tears after him. And my grandfather, whenever he mentioned him, would weep until his eyes filled his beard, and until whoever saw him would weep at his weeping, out of mercy for him(1).
And al-Ya'qubi related, saying: al-Mukhtar dispatched the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad to Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them both) in Medina with a man of his people, and said to him: Stand at the door of Ali ibn al-Hussein, and when you see his doors opened and the people entering, that is the time of his meal—so enter to him. The messenger came to the door of Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them both), and when his doors were opened and the people entered for the meal, he entered and called out at the top of his voice: O People of the House of Prophethood, mine of the Message, descending-place of the angels, abode of revelation! I am the messenger of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd; with me is the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. Then there remained not a single woman in any of the houses of the Banu Hashim but that she shrieked. And the messenger entered and brought out the head, and when Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) saw it, he said: May God cast him away into the Fire.
And some of them related, saying: Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was never seen laughing at all from the time his father was killed except on that day. And he had camels that carried fruit from Syria, and when the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was brought, he ordered that fruit to be distributed among the people of Medina. And the women of the family of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) combed their hair and applied henna—and no woman had combed her hair or applied henna from the time al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) was killed(2).
And among what is related concerning God Almighty's vengeance upon Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan, may God curse him: Abu Mikhnaf said: Muslim ibn Abdullah related to me, saying: And I, by God, was with Shimr that night, and we said: If only you would move us from this place, for we are fearful of it. He said: Is all this dread of this liar?

By God, I will not move from it for three days. May God fill your hearts with terror. He said: And at that place where we were there were many young locusts. By God, I was between waking and sleeping when I heard the fall of horses' hooves, and I said to myself: This is the sound of the locusts. Then I heard it more intensely, so I roused myself and rubbed my eyes and said: No, by God, this is not the locusts. He said: I went to rise, and behold, they had appeared above us from the hill and cried "God is greatest!" Then they surrounded our tents, and we went rushing out on our feet, leaving our horses behind.
He said: So I passed by Shimr while he was wrapped in a refined cloak, and he was a leper, and it is as though I am looking at the whiteness of his flanks above the cloak. He was thrusting at them with the spear—they had hastened him so that he had no time to put on his weapons and his clothes. So we went on and left him. He said: It was only a short while after I had pressed on for an hour when I heard: God is greatest! The vile one has been killed!(1)
And al-Qunduzi al-Hanafi said, concerning the story of al-Mukhtar and his vengeance upon the killers of al-Hussein (peace be upon him): So they followed al-Mukhtar and took possession of Kufa, and they killed the six thousand who had fought al-Hussein (peace be upon him). And their chief Umar ibn Sa'd was killed, and Shimr was singled out for additional torment, and the horses were made to trample his chest and his back, because he had done that to al-Hussein (peace be upon him)(2).
And on the authority of Ibn Ayyash, from al-Kalbi, who said: I saw Sinan ibn Anas, who killed al-Hussein (peace be upon him), babbling in the mosque—an aged old man whose mind had gone(3). And concerning Sinan, may God curse him, the poet says:
And what calamity has ever equaled Hussein,
on the morning the hands of Sinan destroyed him?(4)
Abu Mikhnaf said: And a man of Kinda—called Malik ibn al-Nusayr of the Banu Bidda'—came to al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and struck him on the head with the sword, while he was wearing a hooded cloak. So he cut through the cloak

and the sword reached his head, and his head bled, and the cloak filled with blood. So al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him: May you neither eat nor drink with it, and may God gather you with the wrongdoers. He said: So he cast aside that cloak, then called for a cap and put it on, and wound a turban about it, for he had become exhausted and worn out. And the man of Kinda came and took the cloak—it was of silk. When he later returned with it to his wife, Umm Abdullah—the daughter of al-Hurr, the sister of Hussein ibn al-Hurr al-Bidi—he set about washing the blood from the cloak, and his wife said to him: You plundered the son of the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) and bring it into my house? Take it away from me! And his companions related that he never ceased to be poor, in the worst of states, until he died(1).
Abu Mikhnaf said: When the man of Kinda took the turban of al-Hussein (peace be upon him), the wife of the man of Kinda said: Woe to you! You killed al-Hussein and plundered his garments? By God, I will never share with you a single house. He meant to slap her, but a nail struck his hand, and his hand was cut off at the elbow, and he never ceased to be poor(2).
And Ahmad ibn Hanbal related in al-Ilal, on the authority of Uthman ibn Abi Sulayman, who said: When al-Mukhtar sent the head of Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas to Medina, it was cast before Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them both), and he fell down in prostration(3).
And Ibn Asakir related, on the authority of Sulayman ibn Muslim, the dealer in stillborn offspring, from his father, who said: The first to thrust into the pavilion of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was Umar ibn Sa'd. He said: I saw him and his two sons, their necks struck, then hung upon wood, and fire set ablaze against them.
And on the authority of Abu al-Mu'alla al-Ijli, who said: I heard my father say that when al-Hussein (peace be upon him) descended at Karbala, the first to thrust into his pavilion was Umar ibn Sa'd. So I saw Umar ibn Sa'd and his two sons, their necks struck, then hung upon wood, then fire set ablaze against them. And another said: al-Mukhtar ibn
