Be consoled, for how many a comfort you have
that eases away from you the anguish of grief:
the death of the Prophet, the slaying of the Successor,
the slaying of al-Hussein, and the poisoning of al-Hassan (1)

And some added:
And the dragging of the Successor, the seizure of the inheritance,
the taking of the rights, and the unveiling of grudges,
and the demolishing of the beacon and the House of God,

And Di'bil al-Khuza'i also said:
The trials of time are clouds piled upon one another,
weighted down with calamities, then with disasters.
So when sorrows heap themselves upon you, console yourself
with the affliction of the children of the chaste one, Fatima (2)

And one of them said:
When the heart remembers the family of the Prophet,
the captivity of the women, and the tearing of veils,
the slaughter of the infant, the slaying of the Successor,
the killing of Shabbir, and the poison of Shabbar,
the water of the heart wells up in the eye,
and its pearls flow down upon the cheek.
So, O heart, be patient over their grief,
for in afflictions lie the lessons.

And Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Tahir says:

and reflection and wasting away have worn him thin,
in the family of the Messenger he finds consolation,
and in what Fatima the chaste one endured (3)

And one of them said:

that went before, and has lightened the calamities to come.
The disasters of the days remain for a while
and pass away—but yours endures until the Day of Resurrection.

The Fourth Gathering
The Condemnation by the People of the Faiths against the Killers of Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
So for the pure ones from the household of Muhammad and Ali—may God's blessings be upon them both and upon their families—let the weepers weep, and for them let the mourners lament, and for the like of them let the tears flow, and let the criers cry out, and let the wailers wail, and let the lamenters lament. Where is al-Hassan, and where is al-Hussein? Where are the sons of al-Hussein—righteous after righteous, truthful after truthful? Where is the path after the path? Where is the chosen one after the chosen one? Where are the rising suns? Where are the shining moons? Where are the radiant stars? Where are the banners of religion and the foundations of knowledge (2)?

This nation did not heed the right of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) in preserving his progeny and his household (peace be upon them). What this nation did regarding the sons and descendants of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) no nation among the bygone nations had ever done. For the children of the prophets and their descendants were, among the bygone nations, honored and revered; but as for the progeny of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), this nation left them slain, poisoned, and subdued, driven away

from their land.
Al-Qanduzi al-Hanafi narrated from the Maqtal of Abu Mikhnaf that when Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) arrived in Medina from captivity, he addressed the people of Medina, saying in his sermon: O people, we have become displaced, driven away, expelled, far from our homelands, without any crime we had committed, nor any wrong we had perpetrated, nor any breach in Islam we had caused, nor any indecency we had done. By God, had the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) commanded them to make war upon us, they could not have done more than what they did to us. Surely we belong to God, and to Him we shall return (1).
They destroyed them by killing, by poison, and by mutilation,
as though the Messenger of God were no father to them.

And how excellent is what one of the poets said:
Who will inform the Chosen One that his two grandsons have perished—
this one by poison, and that one slaughtered by the sword?
He enjoined and emphasized his bequest in the world,
yet they treated his covenant with breaking and alteration.
Had their grandfather enjoined the wronging of them,
they could not have added more to what they brought upon them (2)

And al-Sayyid al-Himyari, may mercy be upon him, says:
Is it not strange that the family of Muhammad—

Some of the People of the Book—among the Christians and others—condemned the deeds of this nation against the progeny of their Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and marveled at the evil of their conduct and what they had done to the descendants of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). Al-Khwarizmi said in the Maqtal of al-Hussein (peace be upon him): Some of the scholars said: The Jews forbade beating with the tree from which Moses' staff came, and forbade kindling fire from it, in reverence for the staff of

Moses; and the Christians prostrate to the cross, believing it to be of the kind of wood upon which Jesus was crucified; and the Magians revere fire, believing that it became coolness and peace upon Abraham of its own accord. Yet this nation has killed the sons of its Prophet—though God Most High had enjoined love for them and devotion to them, saying, mighty is He who said: "Say: I ask of you no reward for it, save love for kinsfolk" (1) (2).
Ibn Hibban mentioned in his book al-Thiqat that when they passed by the captives of the household (peace be upon them), on their road to Syria, by the Christian monk in his monastery, and he saw the noble head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and saw the captives in their captivity, he asked them: Whose head is this? They said: The head of al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him). He said to them: What an evil people you are! Had Jesus had a child, we would have placed him within the pupils of our eyes (3).
Ibn Hajar said: When Yazid did to the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) what was mentioned, the envoy of Caesar was present, and he said in astonishment: We have, on one of the islands, in a monastery at Hafir, the donkey of Jesus (upon our Prophet and his family and upon him be blessings and peace), and we make pilgrimage to it every year from all regions, and we make vows and revere it as you revere your Ka'ba. I bear witness that you are upon falsehood (4).
And al-Shafhini, may mercy be upon him, said concerning this:
O nation that broke the covenants of its Prophet,
what then called you to the breaking of covenants?
O Taym, may no happiness ever be fulfilled for you,
but rather your misery called you to wretchedness.
O nation that incurred the killing of its guides,
what then guided you to the killing of the guides?
Or which Satan cast you with his error,
until he overcame you and undid the knots of your bond?
What evil recompense to Ahmad in his family
and his sons on the day of al-Taff was your reward to him.

Ibn A'tham al-Kufi narrated, saying: A rabbi among the rabbis of the Jews turned—he was present, that is, in the gathering of Yazid, having seen the head of al-Hussein (peace be upon him) before him—and said: Who is this youth, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: This is the head; his father is its owner. He said: And who is the owner of the head, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them). He said: And who is his mother? He said: Fatima, daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). The rabbi said: Glory be to God! This is the son of the daughter of your Prophet, whom you killed with such haste? What an evil successor you have been to him in his progeny! By God, had Moses ibn Imran left among us a grandson of his loins, we would have worshiped him besides God. Yet your Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) parted from you only yesterday, and you fell upon the son of your Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and killed him—shame upon you for a nation! Then Yazid ordered, and the rabbi was struck in his throat. The rabbi rose, saying: If you wish, strike me, or kill me, or imprison me, for I find in the Torah that whoever kills the progeny of a prophet shall remain conquered forever as long as he lives, and when he dies God shall cast him into the fire of Hell (2).

He came to them with ten thousand dirhams, took the head, and brought it into his hermitage. Then he heard a voice but saw no person, saying: Blessed are you, and blessed is he who knows his sanctity. The monk raised his head and said: O Lord, by the right of Jesus, command this head to speak with me. So the head spoke and said: O monk, what do you wish? He said: Who are you? The monk placed his face upon its face and said: I will not lift my face from your face until you say, "I am your intercessor on the Day of Resurrection." So the head spoke and said: Return to the religion of my grandfather Muhammad. The monk said: I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. So intercession was accepted for him. The Weeping of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)

Al-Qaddah narrated, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father (peace be upon them), who said: Ali passed by Karbala with two of his companions. When he passed by it, his eyes welled up with weeping, then he said: This is the resting-place of their riding-beasts, and this is where their saddles were cast down, and here their blood shall be spilled. his voice: O Ibn Abbas, do you know this place? I said to him: I do not know it, O Commander of the Faithful. He (peace be upon him) said: Had you known it as I know it, you would not have passed by it without weeping as I weep. He wept long, until his beard was drenched and the tears flowed down upon his chest, and we wept along with him, and he was saying: Ah, ah! What have I to do with the family of Abu Sufyan? What have I to do with the family of Harb, the party of Satan and the patrons of unbelief? Patience, O Abu Abd Allah, for your father has met the like of what you shall meet from them (1).
The eminent al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: It is narrated in some of the reliable books, from Abd Allah ibn Qays, who said: I was among those who fought alongside the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) at Siffin. Abu Ayyub al-A'war al-Sulami had seized the water and guarded it against the people, and the Muslims complained of thirst. He sent horsemen to drive him off, but they turned back disappointed, and his heart was distressed. His son al-Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him: Shall I go to him, O father? He said: Go, my son. So he went with horsemen, and routed Abu Ayyub from the water, pitched his tent, posted his horsemen, came to his father, and informed him. Then Ali (peace be upon him) wept. It was said to him: What makes you weep, O Commander of the Faithful, when this is the first victory by the blessing of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)? He said: I remembered that he shall be slain thirsting at the plain of Karbala, until his horse bolts and neighs, saying: Injustice, injustice, upon a nation that killed the son of the daughter of its Prophet! How excellent is what al-Shafhini, may mercy be upon him, said:
They denied them the water of the Euphrates, and beside it
their blood was spilled by their swords, deemed lawful.
Their heads parted from their bodies, and so they met
the blue spear-points and the withered lances.
Their captive weeps for the loss of their slain one
in sorrow—yet in truth, each one is afflicted.
This one falls upon his right, dust-covered
with the blood of his jugular; and that one is driven away, fettered.
And among the wonders is that their lions are led
in captivity, while the dogs devour the cubs.
Alas for Zayn al-Abidin, led away
in the weight of iron, shackled and chained,

shaking in his fetters, weighed down,
aching from his affliction, trembling.
I would ransom the captive—would that my cheek had been a resting-place
that could have served him as a litter among the litters.
I have sworn by the Merciful, the oath of a truthful man:
were it not for the Pharaohs, the tyrants of old,
the heart of Muhammad would not have spent the night for his grandson
restless, nor the heart of the Successor in turmoil.
They betrayed the covenants of the Prophet and kindled
the fires of a war whose heat shall never be quenched (1)

Sheikh Nasr Allah ibn Majli, the overseer of the Salahiyya treasury, said: One night, having retired to my bed, I reflected upon how the family of Abu Sufyan dealt with the household of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and upon the matter of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)—his killing and the killing of his household, and the captivity of the daughters of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and their carrying them upon the bare backs of camels as captives, and their standing them upon the steps of Damascus as captives, exposed!! So I wept bitterly and lay sleepless, then I slept and saw the Commander of the Faithful Ali (peace be upon him). When I saw him, I hastened to him, kissed his hands, and wept. He said: What makes you weep? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, you conquered Mecca and said, "Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, and whoever shuts his door upon himself is safe, and whoever enters the mosque is safe"—then was done to your son al-Hussein and your household at al-Taff what was done? The Commander of the Faithful smiled and said: Have you not heard the verses of Ibn al-Sayfi (Sa'd ibn Muhammad)? I said: No. He said: Hear them from him, for they are the answer.
He said: My night grew long until the dawn broke, then I came to the door of Ibn al-Sayfi and knocked. He came out to me bareheaded and barefoot, and said: What has brought you at this hour? So I recounted my story to him, and he burst into tears and said: By God, I composed them only this very night, and no human being has heard them from me. Then he recited to me:
We held power, and pardon was our nature,
but when you held power, the valley flowed with blood.
You made lawful the killing of captives, while we so long
would refrain from the captives, sparing and forgiving.

Let this distinction between us suffice you—
for every vessel pours forth what is within it (1)
And how excellent is what al-Shafhini, may mercy be upon him, said:
O Taym, may no happiness ever be fulfilled for you,
but rather your misery called you to wretchedness.
Were it not for you, the brutes of Umayya would never have
triumphed one day over the progeny of Ahmad—were it not for you.
By God, you have not attained happiness; rather
your desire has cast you into the fire of Hell.
How can you claim release when you have settled
a rule for another? So how can you be truthful in your claim?
You, O Adiyy, are the greater in enmity—
by God, none but you propped up hypocrisy.
Would that there had never been a day in which you were, nor an hour,
in which Nufayl broke the seal of Suhak's marriage.
Upon you, O Umayya, be disgrace forever,
remaining as your remaining in the fire endures.
Would that you had pardoned al-Hussein and his band,
as the Successor, his father, pardoned your fathers,
and had shown mercy on the day of al-Taff, the mercy of his two grandfathers—
the one sent on the day of the Conquest—toward your freed captives.
Was there a hand that stripped your bondmaids as
your hands stripped the noblewomen of al-Hussein?
Or did your women come forth at the conquest of Mecca, unveiled,
as his women on the day of al-Tuff?
O nation that incurred the killing of its guides,
what then guided you to the killing of the guides?
Or which Satan cast you with his error,
until he overcame you and undid the knots of your bond?
What evil recompense to Ahmad in his family
and his sons on the day of al-Taff was your reward.
If you rejoiced over a deception you concealed in
the killing of al-Hussein, then calamity upon calamity has befallen you.
What there was in stripping the son of Fatima of his rule
was not such that, had it spared you one day, it would have sufficed.
Alas for the body left bare upon the open ground,
a corpse kissed by the edges of your blades.
Alas for the dust-stained cheek that your foolish ones
furiously furrowed with the points of their spears (2)

The Sixth Gathering
The Merit of Reciting Poetry about Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
and the Coming of Some Poets before the Imams (peace be upon them)
Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abu Ammar the reciter, from Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: He said to me: O Abu Ammara, recite to me about al-Hussein ibn Ali. So I recited to him, and he wept. Then I recited again, and he wept. By God, I kept reciting and he kept weeping until I heard weeping from the house.
He said: Then he said: O Abu Ammara! Whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein ibn Ali and makes fifty weep, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and makes thirty weep, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and makes twenty weep, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and makes ten weep, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and makes one weep, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and weeps, his is Paradise; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and feigns weeping, his is Paradise (1).
Al-Kashshi, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Zayd al-Shahham, who said: We were with Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him), and we were a group from Kufa, when Ja'far ibn Affan entered upon Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him). He brought him close and seated him near, then said: O Ja'far! He said: At your service—may God make me your ransom! He said: It has reached me that you compose poetry about al-Hussein, and that you do it well. He said to him: Yes, may God make me your ransom. He said: Recite. So he recited to him, and he (peace be upon him) wept, and those around him wept, until the tears were upon his face and his beard. Then he said: O Ja'far, by God, the angels of God brought near were present here, listening to your words about al-Hussein (peace be upon him), and they wept as we wept, and more. And God Most High has made obligatory for you—O Ja'far—in this hour the whole of Paradise,

(522)
and God has forgiven you. Then he said: O Ja'far, shall I tell you more? He said: Yes, my master. He said: There is no one who composes poetry about al-Hussein and weeps and makes others weep by it but that God has made Paradise obligatory for him and has forgiven him (1).
Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abd Allah ibn Ghalib, who said: I entered upon Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him) and recited to him an elegy for al-Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them). When I reached this passage:
What a calamity—that they gave al-Hussein to drink
from the cup of the dust, naught but the soil
a woman cried out weeping from behind the curtain: O father! (2)
And from Abu Harun the blind, who said: I entered upon Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him), and he said to me: Recite to me. So I recited to him, and he said: No—as you recite, and as you elegize him at his grave. So I recited to him:
Pass by the grave of al-Hussein,
and say to his pure bones
He said: When he wept, I fell silent, but he said: Continue. So I continued. He said: Then he said: Give me more, give me more. So I recited to him:
O Mary, arise and lament your master,
and over al-Hussein aid me with your weeping
He said: He wept, and the women were stirred. When they had grown quiet, he said to me: O Abu Harun, whoever recites about al-Hussein and makes ten weep, his is Paradise. Then he kept decreasing one by one until he reached one, and said: Whoever recites about al-Hussein and makes one weep, his is Paradise. Then he said: Whoever mentions him and weeps, his is Paradise. And it is narrated from Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him) that he said: For everything there is a reward, except the tear shed for us (3).
Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abu Harun the blind, who said: Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: O Abu Harun, recite to me about al-Hussein (peace be upon him). So I recited to him, and he said

to me: Recite to me as you recite—meaning with tenderness. So I recited to him:
Pass by the grave of al-Hussein,
and say to his pure bones
He said: He wept. Then he said: Give me more. So I recited to him the other ode. He said: He wept, and I heard weeping from behind the curtain. When I had finished, he said: O Abu Harun, whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and weeps and makes ten weep, Paradise is written for them; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and weeps and makes five weep, Paradise is written for them; and whoever recites poetry about al-Hussein and weeps and makes one weep, Paradise is written for them both; and whoever mentions al-Hussein in his presence, and from his eyes comes forth tears the measure of a fly's wing, his reward is upon God, mighty and majestic, who will accept nothing less for him than Paradise (1).
And how excellent is what Di'bil al-Khuza'i, may mercy be upon him, says:
I shall weep for them as long as a rider makes pilgrimage to God,
and as long as a dove coos upon the trees.
O eye, weep for them, and be generous with tears,
for the time has come for pouring and outpouring.
The daughters of Ziyad are sheltered in palaces,
while the family of the Messenger of God are in the wastelands.
The dwellings of the Messenger of God have become desolate,
while the family of Ziyad dwell in chambers.
The family of the Messenger of God—their bodies are emaciated,
while the family of Ziyad are stout-necked.
The family of the Messenger of God—their throats are made to bleed,
while the family of Ziyad are mistresses of the bridal canopies.
The family of the Messenger of God—their women are taken captive,
while the family of Ziyad are safe in their dwellings.
When they are wronged, they stretch toward their wrongers
hands held back from vengeance.
I shall weep for them as long as a sunrise scatters light upon the earth
and the caller to goodness calls to the prayers,
and as long as a sun rises and its setting draws near—
by night I weep for them, and by the morns (2)

The Seventh Gathering
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) Informing Umm Salama of the Slaying of al-Hussein (peace be upon him)
and His Giving Her Soil from Karbala
O my masters, O family of the Messenger of God, through you I seek nearness to God, mighty and exalted, by opposing those who betrayed you, broke their allegiance to you, denied your authority, rejected your station, cast off the bond of obedience to you, abandoned the means of your love, sought nearness to their Pharaohs by disavowing you and turning away from you, prevented you from establishing the legal punishments and from rooting out denial, from mending the breach, gathering the scattered, sealing the rift, straightening the crookedness, executing the rulings, refining Islam, and suppressing sins, and who stirred up against you the dust of wars and discord, and turned upon you the swords of grudges, tore your veils, purchased wine with your fifth, and diverted the alms of the poor to the jesters and the mockers (1).

And how excellent is what al-Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Qazwini, may mercy be upon him, says:
Where is the protection, when in the plains your blood
was shed by the sword of Umayya and its spear?
Where is the protection, when these your dismembered bodies
remained three days in the scorching heat of its wastes?
Where is the protection, when these your sons
lie slain, their necks plundered by the swords?
Where is the protection, when these your children
were slaughtered thirsting in the soil of its courtyards?
Where is the protection, when these your maidens
were carried upon the camels' bare backs among its enemies—
carried, against the will of religion, while bereaved,
tearful, repeating their groaning sighs?

So who shall console Fatima, after Ahmad,
for the killing of her sons and the captivity of her daughters? (1)
Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was in the house of Umm Salama, and he said to her: Let no one enter upon me. Then al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came, and he was a child, and she could not restrain him until he entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). Umm Salama entered after him, and there was al-Hussein upon his chest, and there was the Prophet weeping, and in his hand was something he was turning over.
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: O Umm Salama, this is Gabriel, informing me that this one shall be slain, and this is the soil upon which he shall be killed. So keep it with you; when it turns to blood, then my beloved has been slain. Umm Salama said: O Messenger of God, ask God to ward that off from him. He said: I have done so, but God, mighty and majestic, revealed to me that for him there is a rank that none of the created beings shall attain, and that he has followers who will intercede and whose intercession will be accepted, and that the Mahdi shall be from his offspring. So blessed is he who is among the friends of al-Hussein and his followers—they, by God, are the triumphant on the Day of Resurrection (2).
And from Anas: the angel of rain sought permission to come to the Messenger of God, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to Umm Salama: Hold the door for us; let no one enter upon us. Then al-Hussein (peace be upon him) came to enter, and she prevented him, but he leapt until he entered, and he began leaping upon the shoulders of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) and sitting upon them. The angel said to him: Do you love him? He said: Yes. He said: Then your nation shall kill him, and if you wish I will show you the place where he shall be slain. So he stretched out his hand, and there was red clay. Umm Salama took it and tucked it into the corner of her veil. Thabit said: It reached us that it was the place where he was slain at Karbala (3).
And it is narrated that Umm Salama said: I saw the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) in a dream, and upon his head
