stations where they were present to support you. And God is my Guardian, conveying to you my greetings on my behalf.(1)
It is related from Thabit ibn Abi Safiyya, who said: Ali ibn al-Hussein, the Master of the Worshipers (peace be upon him), looked at Ubaydullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them) and wept. Then he said: There is no day more grievous to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) than the day of Uhud, on which his uncle Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Lion of God and the Lion of His Messenger, was killed; and after it the day of Mu'tah, on which his cousin Ja'far ibn Abi Talib was killed. Then he (peace be upon him) said: And there is no day like the day of Hussein (peace be upon him), upon whom thirty thousand men advanced, claiming to be of this nation, each one seeking nearness to God, Mighty and Majestic, through his blood, while he reminded them of God, yet they took no heed, until they killed him out of transgression, injustice, and aggression.
Then he (peace be upon him) said: May God have mercy on al-Abbas, for he gave preference and endured trial, and ransomed his brother with his own self until his hands were severed. So God, Mighty and Majestic, replaced them with two wings by which he flies with the angels in Paradise, just as He did for Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). And indeed al-Abbas has, with God, Mighty and Majestic, a station for which all the martyrs will envy him on the Day of Resurrection.(2)
And Abu al-Faraj said in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, from al-Qasim ibn Asbagh ibn Nubata, who said: I saw a man from Banu Aban ibn Darim whose face was black, though I had known him to be handsome and very fair-skinned. I said to him: I hardly recognized you. He said: I killed a young beardless man with Hussein (peace be upon him), between whose eyes was the mark of prostration. Since I killed him, I have not slept a single night without his coming to me, seizing me by my collar until he brings me to Hellfire and casts me into it, and I scream—so that no one remains in the neighborhood without hearing my screaming. He said: And the one killed was al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him).(3)
And Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, also related it from al-Qasim ibn al-Asbagh ibn Nubata,

who said: A man from Banu Darim came to us, one who had witnessed the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him), his face blackened, though he had been a handsome man, very fair-skinned. I said to him: I hardly recognized you because of the change in your color. He said: I killed a man from among the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him), between whose eyes the mark of prostration was visible, and I brought back his head. Al-Qasim said: I saw him on a frisky horse of his, having hung the head on its breast, where it struck against its knees.
He said: I said to my father: Were he to lift the head a little—do you not see what the horse is doing to it with its forelegs? He said to me: O my son, what is being done to me is far worse. He told me: I have not slept a single night since I killed him without his coming to me in my sleep, seizing me by my shoulder and leading me, saying: Come along—and he leads me to Hellfire and casts me in, and I scream. He said: A woman, his neighbor, heard of this and said: He does not let us sleep at all during the night because of his screaming. He said: So I rose up with some young men of the neighborhood, and we came to his wife and asked her, and she said: He has exposed himself; he has told you the truth.(1)
Sheikh Ja'far al-Naqdi, may mercy be upon him, said: As for al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him) and his brothers Ja'far, Uthman, and Abdullah—the sons of Umm al-Banin, the daughter of Hizam ibn Khalid al-Kilabiyya—Ahmad ibn Muhanna said in his book Umdat al-Talib: He is given the kunya Abu al-Fadl, and is titled al-Saqqa (the Water-Bearer), because he sought water for his brother Hussein (peace be upon him) on the day of al-Taff, and was killed before he could deliver it to him—that is, on the final attempt—though he had brought water several times before, as has been mentioned.(2)
And how excellent are the words of Sheikh Muhsin Abu al-Hubb, may mercy be upon him, when he says, speaking through the tongue of Hussein (peace be upon him):
Your father was to my grandfather as you are to me—
with his own soul he ransomed the soul of the one he called brother.
Your father is the giver of his Kawthar's drink to mankind at the Gathering,
and you, in al-Taff, were the water-bearer to our little ones.

And Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani said in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin: Al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him)

was given the kunya Abu al-Fadl, and his mother was Umm al-Banin as well, and he was her eldest son, and the last of his full brothers—by both father and mother—to be killed. And concerning al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him), the poet says:
Most worthy of all people to be wept over
is the youth who made Hussein weep at Karbala—
his brother, son of his father Ali,
Abu al-Fadl, drenched in blood,
who stood by him, nothing turning him away,
and gave him water generously despite his own thirst.
And concerning him al-Kumayt ibn Zayd says:
And Abu al-Fadl—truly the sweet remembrance of them
is a healing of souls from their ailments.
The impostors were slain when they killed him,
the noblest of those who drank the falling rain of the clouds.
Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) was a comely, handsome man, who would ride a fine, well-built horse while his feet trailed upon the ground. He was called the Moon of the Banu Hashim, and the banner of Hussein (peace be upon him) was with him.
He said: From Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) mustered his companions and gave his banner to his brother al-Abbas. Ahmad ibn Isa related to me, from Husayn ibn Nasr, from his father, from Amr ibn Shimr, from Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), that Zayd ibn Riqad and Hakim ibn al-Tufayl al-Ta'i killed al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him). And Umm al-Banin—the mother of these four slain brothers—would go out to al-Baqi' and lament her sons with the most sorrowful and burning lamentation, so that people would gather around her to listen to her. And Marwan would come among those who came for that, and he would not cease to hear her lamentation and weep. This was mentioned by Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hamza, from al-Nawfali, from Hammad ibn Isa al-Juhani, from Mu'awiya ibn Ammar, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them).(1)
They said: Al-Abbas (peace be upon him), the Water-Bearer, the Moon of the Banu Hashim, bearer of the banner of Hussein (peace be upon him), and the eldest of the brothers, went seeking water. They charged upon him and he charged upon them, and he began to say:
I fear not death when death cries out,
until I am laid low among the brave men, fallen.
(244)
My soul is a shield for the soul of the pure Chosen One.
I am al-Abbas, going forth with the water-skin.
And I fear not evil on the day of encounter.
So he scattered them, and Zayd ibn Warqa lay in wait for him behind a palm tree, and Hakim ibn al-Tufayl al-Sinbisi assisted him, and struck him on his right hand. He took the sword in his left hand and charged, reciting:
By God, though you have severed my right hand,
I shall ever defend my religion,
and defend an Imam of true certainty,
the son of the Prophet, the pure, the trustworthy.
So he fought until he weakened, and Hakim ibn al-Tufayl al-Ta'i lay in wait for him behind a palm tree and struck him on his left hand. He said:
O my soul, fear not the disbelievers,
and rejoice in the mercy of the Almighty,
with the Prophet, the master, the chosen.
In their transgression they have severed my left.
So scorch them, O Lord, with the heat of the Fire.
Then an accursed one struck him with an iron rod and killed him. When Hussein (peace be upon him) saw him fallen on the bank of the Euphrates, he wept and began to recite:
You transgressed, O worst of people, in your insolence,
and you opposed the religion of the Prophet Muhammad.
Did not the best of Messengers charge you concerning us?
Are we not of the lineage of the rightly-guided Prophet?
Was not al-Zahra my mother rather than yours?
Was he not of the best of creation, Ahmad?
You are cursed and disgraced for what you have committed,
and soon you shall meet the heat of a blazing fire.
The learned al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: And in some of the writings of our companions it is stated that when al-Abbas (peace be upon him) saw his brother's solitude, he came to him and said: O my brother, is there permission? Hussein (peace be upon him) wept bitterly, then said: O my brother, you are the bearer of my banner, and if you go, my army will scatter. Al-Abbas said: My breast has tightened and I am weary of life, and I wish to seek my vengeance from these hypocrites.
(245)
Hussein (peace be upon him) said: Then seek a little water for these children. So al-Abbas went and admonished them and warned them, but it did not benefit them, and he returned to his brother and informed him. He heard the children calling out: Thirst! Thirst! So he mounted his horse, took his spear and the water-skin, and headed toward the Euphrates. Four thousand of those appointed over the Euphrates surrounded him and pelted him with arrows. He scattered them and killed of them—according to what is related—eighty men, until he entered the water.
When he wished to drink a handful of the water, he remembered the thirst of Hussein (peace be upon him) and his household, so he cast the water away and filled the water-skin, and said—according to what is related:
O my soul, after Hussein be lowly,
and after him may you cease to exist.
This is Hussein, drinking from the cup of death,
while you would drink the cool, sweet water?
By God, this is not the way of my religion.
And he carried it upon his right shoulder and turned toward the tents. They cut off his path and surrounded him on every side, and he fought them until Nawfal al-Azraq struck him on his right hand and severed it. So he carried the water-skin upon his left shoulder, and Nawfal struck him and severed his left hand at the wrist. So he carried the water-skin with his teeth, and an arrow came and struck the water-skin and its water was spilled.
The severing of his two hands did not grieve him, for in his eyes
nothing is precious beside God.
Rather, what grieved him was the spilling of the water-skin's water,
for by it he had pledged to quench the pure ones' thirst.
By God, had his hands returned to him, he would have brought
water, and he was not one to be stingy with his hands.(1)
The narrator said: Then another arrow came and struck his chest, and he toppled from his horse and cried out to his brother Hussein: Reach me! When he came to him, he saw him fallen and wept (peace be upon him)... and cried out: Now my back is broken and my recourse is diminished.(2)

And he fell upon him, saying there:
Today the sword has departed from the right hand.
Today the ram has gone from the battalions.
Today the guides have lost their Imam.
Today eyes that had not slept have slept because of you,
while others lay wakeful, their sleep made bitter.
And how excellent are the words of Sheikh Muhammad Ali al-Ya'qubi, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
When the Grandson saw him a dismembered corpse,
he fell upon him, his back bent and bowed:
In whose hand, after you, shall I now seek protection
from the assaults of the enemies, or repel the foes?
Hard upon me it is to see you stretched out,
your face in the dust, your body bloodied on the ground.
For you my back is bent, and the hand of doom has palsied
my right hand, and severed in its blades my left.
Would that the Fatimid women had not grieved you as they came
in a state that grieves even the enemies—
and the tents clamored, with all who were in them, over you,
one mourner answering another mourner within.
You were their water-bearer when thirst gripped them,
and now here they are, drinking only flowing tears.
Their nights once passed for them in radiance through you,
and now their days have become as nights.
The dwellings of glory were once around you,
and after you they have returned to barren ruins, empty.
Who now will protect the howdah if it travels
to Syria, with its camels folding up the wastelands?
O son of her who is reckoned among the purest of tribes,
who bore those pure and noble sons—
I have taken refuge in your resting place as a guest,
and you would never turn away a guest seeking shelter and refuge.(1)

Some of the narrators said: When the affair became dire for Hussein (peace be upon him) and he remained alone, isolated, he turned toward the tents of his father's family and found them empty of them. Then he turned toward the tents of the Banu Aqil and found them empty of them. Then he turned toward the tents of his companions and saw none of them. So he began repeating: There is no power and no strength except in God, the Most High, the Most Great. Then he went to the tents of the women and came to the tent of his son Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him), and found him laid out on a stretch of leather. He entered upon him while Zainab was nursing him, and when

Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them) looked at him, he tried to rise but could not, owing to the severity of his illness. He said to his aunt: Prop me up against your breast, for this is the son of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) who has come. So Zainab sat behind him and propped him against her breast, and Hussein (peace be upon him) began asking his son about his illness, while he gave praise to God Almighty. Then he said: O father, what did you do today with these hypocrites? Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him: O my son, Satan has gained mastery over them and made them forget the remembrance of God, and war has flared between us and them—may God curse them—until the earth has overflowed with blood, ours and theirs.
Ali (peace be upon him) said: O father, where is my uncle al-Abbas? When he asked about his uncle, Zainab choked on her tears and began watching her brother to see how he would answer him, for he had not told him of the martyrdom of his uncle al-Abbas, fearing that his illness would worsen. He (peace be upon him) said: O my son, your uncle has been killed, and they severed his hands on the bank of the Euphrates. So Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) wept bitterly until he fainted.(1)
And how excellent are the words of Sheikh Hasan al-Hilli, may mercy be upon him, when he says, speaking through the tongue of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) as he laments his brother al-Abbas:
And he bent over him saying: The enemies have torn away
the veil of nobility, and made lawful its sanctity.
My brother, against whom shall I now strike, when you are my arm
and my sword whenever its standing place grows narrow one day?
My brother, who now will give noble deeds their due,
and who will raise their crests high in honor?
My brother, who now will defend the chaste women when they go forth
upon a barren plain, the circling vultures kindled over their dust?
My brother, to whom shall the banner be given, and through whom
shall the depths of war be cleaved when its tide surges?
Alas! For time betrays with its turns
against you, and freely have its arrows pierced me.
To God I complain of an anguish, which were I to spread it
over the loftiest mountains, their peaks would sink away.(2)

The Third Gathering, of the Seventh Day
The Stations of al-Abbas (peace be upon him) and His Noble Stands
The sanctified authority, Sheikh Abdullah ibn Ma'tuq, may mercy be upon him, says concerning the bravery of al-Abbas, son of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and his self-sacrifice:
I shall not forget when, on the day of combat, he assailed the
champions—he who is a snatcher-away of fated lives.
He is the youth, the cub of that lion, Haydara,
the only youth who plunges into the terror of battle.
He is the favored one, who to excellence was a father,
and noble deeds, when counted, are his very traits.
Valiant, a lion, daring in the fray, a lion,
and in the darkness a moon by which the shadows are dispelled.
He has seats of truth in the presence of his Master,
and in the stations never did his foot slip.
When the champions assault, you would think him a thunderbolt;
from his voice, deafness settled in their ears.

Sayyid Muhsin al-Amin, may mercy be upon him, said in al-Majalis al-Saniyya: Al-Abbas, son of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), was born in the year twenty-six of the Hijra, and lived with his father, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), for fourteen years. He attended some of the wars, but his father did not permit him to fight. He was killed with his brother Hussein (peace be upon him) at Karbala at the age of thirty-four. He is given the kunya Abu al-Fadl, and is titled al-Saqqa (the Water-Bearer) and the Moon of the Banu Hashim. Three full brothers—by his mother and father—were killed with him at Karbala. On the day of Karbala he had renowned stations and great stands, and he possessed lofty qualities and noble deeds by which he was distinguished.
Among them: that he (peace be upon him) was the bearer of the banner of Hussein (peace be upon him)—and the banner is the greatest standard, borne only by the brave and noble in the army.
Among them: that he was strong and brave, a comely and well-built horseman, riding a fine, sturdy horse
(249)
while his feet trailed upon the ground.
Among them: that when Hussein (peace be upon him) gathered his household and companions on the night of the tenth of Muharram and addressed them, saying in his sermon: As for what follows, I know of no companions more faithful or better than my companions, and no household more righteous or more bound by ties than my household. This night has come over you, so take it as a mount, and let each one of you take the hand of one of my household, and disperse in the darkness of this night, and leave me to these people, for they desire none but me—al-Abbas (peace be upon him) rose to him and said: And why should we do that? To live on after you? May God never show us that! Then his household and companions spoke with words like these and similar.
Among them: that when Shimr called out: Where are the sons of our sister? Where is al-Abbas and his brothers?—no one answered him. Hussein (peace be upon him) said to them: Answer him, even though he is a transgressor, for he is one of your maternal uncles. Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) said to him: What do you want? He said: You, O sons of my sister, are granted safety. Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) said to him: May God curse you and curse your safety! Do you grant us safety while the son of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) has no safety? And his brothers spoke with words like his, then they returned.
Among them: that when Abdullah ibn Hizam, the maternal uncle's son of al-Abbas (peace be upon him), obtained from Ibn Ziyad safe conduct for al-Abbas and his brothers by his mother, they said: We have no need of safe conduct. The safety of God is better than the safety of the son of Sumayya.
Among them: that when thirst grew severe upon Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions, he commanded his brother al-Abbas (peace be upon him), who set out with twenty footmen carrying water-skins and thirty horsemen. They came by night until they drew near the water, with Nafi' ibn Hilal al-Jamali ahead of them bearing the banner. Amr ibn al-Hajjaj said: Who is the man? He said: Nafi'. He said: What has brought you? He said: We have come to drink from this water from which you have barred us. He said: Then drink, and may it bring you ease. He said: No, by God, I will not drink a single drop of it while Hussein (peace be upon him) is thirsty, he and his companions. They said: There is no way to give these people drink; we have only been stationed in this place
(250)
to deny them the water.
So Nafi' said to his men: Fill your water-skins—and they filled them. Amr ibn al-Hajjaj and his companions sprang at them, and al-Abbas (peace be upon him) and Nafi' ibn Hilal charged upon them and scattered them, and came back with the water. Then Amr ibn al-Hajjaj and his companions returned and sought to cut off their path, but al-Abbas (peace be upon him) and his companions fought them until they repelled them, and they brought the water to Hussein (peace be upon him).
Among them: that when the war broke out, four of the companions of Hussein (peace be upon him) advanced—they were those who had come from Kufa, having with them the horse of Nafi' ibn Hilal—and they fell upon the people with their swords. When they plunged deep among them, the people turned upon them and cut them off from their companions. So Hussein (peace be upon him) dispatched his brother al-Abbas (peace be upon him) to them, and he charged upon the people alone, striking among them with his sword until he scattered them from his companions, and reached them. They greeted him, and he brought them, but they were wounded and refused to let him rescue them unharmed, so they returned to the fighting while he defended them, until they were killed in one place. So al-Abbas (peace be upon him) returned to his brother and informed him of their fate.
Among them: that he resembled his uncle Ja'far the Flier (peace be upon him), whose right and left hands were severed in the war of Mu'tah while striving in the way of God. Likewise al-Abbas (peace be upon him) had his right and left hands severed while striving in the way of God in support of his brother Hussein (peace be upon him) on the day of Ashura:
Do not forget al-Abbas's excellent stand
in the terror, amid the savage onslaught.
He stood by his brother and gave his own life freely
in bringing water to his children and women.
He drove back thousands upon thousands, opposing
the edges of the swords with a radiant brow.(1)

The Fourth Gathering, of the Seventh Day
The Lamentation of the Banu Hashim and the People of Medina and Their Weeping over
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), and the Weeping of Umm al-Banin over al-Abbas (peace be upon him)
It is related that when Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) came from captivity and entered Medina, he addressed the people and said (peace be upon him): O people, God—to whom be praise—has tried us with a great calamity and an immense breach in Islam. Abu Abdullah and his kindred have been killed, his women and his children taken captive, and they paraded his head through the lands atop lofty spears. O people, which of your men, then, can rejoice after his killing? Or which eye can hold back its tears and withhold its flowing? For the seven mighty heavens wept at his killing, and the seas, the heavens, the earth, the trees, the fish, the angels brought near, and all the inhabitants of the heavens wept. O people, what heart does not break at his killing? Or what soul does not yearn toward him? Or what ear hears of this breach that has been made in Islam? O people, we awoke driven out, banished, repelled, sent far away, as though we were the children of the Turks or of Kabul, without any crime we had committed, nor any wrong we had perpetrated. We never heard of this among our forefathers of old—this is nothing but a fabrication. By God, had the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) charged them to fight us as he charged them with care for us, they could not have done more than what they did. So truly to God we belong, and truly to Him we return.(2)
(2) .
They destroyed them by killing, by poison, and by mutilation,
as though the Messenger of God were not their father.
As though the Messenger of God, by the ruling of his law,
had ordained for his family that they be killed or crucified.

Awana ibn al-Hakam said: When Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad summoned Abd al-Malik ibn Abi al-Harth al-Sulami and sent him to Medina to bring the news to Amr ibn Sa'id. Al-Sulami entered upon Amr, who said: What is behind you? He said: That which gladdens the governor—Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) has been killed. He said: Announce his killing. So I announced his killing, and by God, I never heard a wailing like the wailing of the women of the Banu Hashim in their dwellings over Hussein (peace be upon him). And Amr said, laughing:
The women of the Banu Ziyad raised a clamor
like the clamor of our women on the morning of al-Arnab.
Then Amr said: This is a wailing for the wailing of Uthman ibn Affan. Then he ascended the pulpit and informed the people of his killing.(1)
And in the Kitab al-Mathalib by Abu Ubayda, he said: Then he gestured toward the noble grave and said: O Muhammad! A day for the day of Badr! And a group of the Ansar denounced him for it.(2)
And how excellent are the words of Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Qazwini, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
A calamity—grievous it struck the Chosen One through it—
for whose disaster the pure Fatima wept in grief,
on the morn when the sons of Harb attacked, and there clamored
for it hordes that could not be numbered,
and their grudges rose up in them, so they sought
from the Chosen One the vengeance that Badr had wrought.
And she came in ignorance, seeking authority
over one who held command and prohibition over her,
and she demanded that he submit humbly to the ruling
before her—but honor refuses that a free man should grovel.
So he said: Go down, O soul, into the path of doom,
for when injustice descends, the bitter is found sweet.(3)

And al-Barqi, may mercy be upon him, related, from Umar ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon them), who said: When Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) was killed, the women of the Banu Hashim wore black and coarse garments,(1) and they would not complain of heat or cold, and Ali ibn al-Hussein (peace be upon him) would prepare food for them for the mourning.(2)
And al-Kulayni, may mercy be upon him, related, from Misqala al-Tahhan, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: When Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed, his wife al-Kalbiyya(3) held a mourning over him, and she wept, and the women and the servants wept, until their tears dried up and ceased. While she was thus, she saw a maidservant of hers weeping, her tears flowing. She summoned her and said to her: What is it with you, among us all, that your tears flow? She said: When exhaustion overcame me, I drank a drink of sawiq. He said: So she ordered food and sawiq, and ate and drank and gave to eat and drink, and said: We intend by this only to strengthen ourselves for weeping over Hussein (peace be upon him).
He said: And there were presented to al-Kalbiyya certain perfume-boxes(4) so that she might use them to aid in the mourning of Hussein (peace be upon him). When she saw the boxes, she said: What are these? They said: A gift that so-and-so has presented so that you may use them to aid in the mourning of Hussein. She said: We are not at a wedding—what shall we do with them? Then she commanded that they be taken out of the house. When they were taken out of the house, no trace of them was felt, as though they had flown off between heaven and earth, and no sign of them was seen after they were taken out of the house.(5)
And it is related from Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he said: Hussein ibn

Ali (peace be upon them) was lamented for a full year, every day and night, and for three years from the day on which he was slain. And al-Miswar ibn Makhrama and a group of the companions of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) used to come concealed and veiled, and would listen and weep.(1)
And al-Ya'qubi said: The first to cry out in Medina was Umm Salama, wife of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). He had handed to her a flask containing soil, and said to her: Gabriel has informed me that my nation will kill Hussein, and he gave me this soil, and said to me: When it turns into fresh blood, know that Hussein has been killed. So it was with her, and when that hour came, she began to look at the flask every moment. When she saw that it had turned to blood, she cried out: O Hussein! O son of the Messenger of God! And the women cried out from every direction, until Medina rose up with an uproar the like of which had never been heard.(2)
And Ibn Abi al-Dunya mentioned that when the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him) reached Umm Salama, she said: Did they do it? May God fill their graves and their houses with fire! Then she fell unconscious.(3)
And how excellent are the words of Sheikh Salih al-Kawwaz, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
O rider upon a sturdy-jawed camel, in whose legs
is the folding-up of the wilderness's face with every stride,
turn aside to Medina and cry out in its streets
a cry that fills the world with anguish.
Call those who, when the crier calls to them,
respond before even the echo of his voice returns,
whose action almost outstrips the intent
in aiding one who calls to them, seeking help in terror.
Say: O sons of Shayba of the praise, by whom
the pillars of God's religion stood firm and rose high,
rise up, for a storm has raged at al-Taff,
tilting the slopes of the mountain of glory until it split apart.(4)

Some of the narrators said: And she was wept for by al-Rabab, daughter of Imru' al-Qays al-Kalbiyya, may God's pleasure be upon her, wife of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), and she is the one of whom Hussein (peace be upon him) says:
By your life, truly I love a dwelling
in which Sukayna and al-Rabab reside.
I love them both and freely spend my wealth,
and my reprover has no rebuke in that.
I shall not obey them, though they reproach me,
as long as I live—until the dust hides me away.
And she is the one who stayed at the grave of Hussein (peace be upon him) for a year, then said:
Until the year's end—then the word of peace be upon you both;
whoever weeps a full year has surely given his excuse.
He said: And she lived a year after him, with no roof of a house sheltering her, until she wasted away and died of grief.(1)
And she eulogized Hussein (peace be upon him) and lamented him with anguish and intense pain and a burning grief that would not be quenched. She said, may God's pleasure be upon her:
Indeed, the one who was a light by which guidance was sought
lies at Karbala, slain and unburied.
Grandson of the Prophet, may God reward you well
on our behalf, and may you be spared the loss of the scales.
You were to me a steep mountain in which I took refuge,
and you used to keep our company with kinship and faith.
Who now is for the orphans, and who is for the beggars, and who
will protect and shelter every destitute one?(2)
By God, I will seek no in-law to replace your kinship
until I am hidden away between the sand and the clay.(3)
And it is related that she, may God be pleased with her, eulogized Hussein (peace be upon him) in Syria after she had taken his head, kissed it, and placed it in her lap, saying:
O Hussein—never shall I forget Hussein,
whom the spearheads of the enemies struck down.
