The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

And count Ali, lord of virtues and lofty heights,
and Fatima al-Zahra, the best of daughters,
and Hamza and al-Abbas, men of faith and piety,
and Ja'far the soaring, among the veiled ones of paradise.
Those are made wretched by Hind and her faction,
by Sumayya—of the foolish and the foul.
They are the ones who barred the fathers from taking their right,
and they are the ones who left the sons hostage to dispersion.
I shall weep for them as long as a rider makes pilgrimage to God,
and as long as a dove laments upon the branches.
O my eye, weep for them, and be generous with tears,
for the time has come for outpouring and flowing.
The house of Ziyad in fortresses impregnable,
and the family of God's Messenger in the open wastes.
The dwellings of God's Messenger have become desolate,
while the house of Ziyad dwells in the chambers.
The family of God's Messenger—their bodies wasted away,
while the house of Ziyad—coarse and thick of neck.
The family of God's Messenger—their throats run with blood,
while the house of Ziyad—lords of the bridal canopies.
The family of God's Messenger—their women taken captive,
while the house of Ziyad rest secure in their refuges.
When wronged, they extend toward those who wronged them
hands withheld from vengeance.
I shall weep for them as long as a rising sun scatters its light upon the earth,
and as long as the herald of good calls to the prayers,
and as long as a sun rises and its setting draws near—
by night I weep for them, and in the early mornings. (1)

The First Gathering, of the Second Day
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) in the Assembly of al-Walid
It is recounted in the Noble al-Nahiya Visitation, addressing the Master of Martyrs (peace be upon him): You were a son to the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), a rescuer for the Qur'an, a support for the nation, diligent in obedience, keeping faith with the covenant and the pledge, turning away from the paths of the corrupt, exerting your utmost effort, long in bowing and prostration,

ascetic in the world with the asceticism of one departing from it, looking upon it with the eye of those who shun it. Your hopes were turned away from it, your aspirations diverted from its adornment, your glances averted from its splendor, and your longing for the Hereafter was well known. So when injustice stretched out its arm, when oppression unveiled its face, when error called its followers—while you were dwelling in the sanctuary of your grandfather, set apart from the oppressors, a companion of the house and the prayer niche, withdrawn from pleasures and desires, condemning evil with your heart and your tongue, to the measure of your strength and ability.
Then knowledge demanded of you to condemn, and it became binding upon you to strive against the transgressors. So you set out among your children and your family, your followers and your loyal ones, and you proclaimed the truth and the clear proof, and you called to God with wisdom and beautiful exhortation, and you commanded the establishment of the divine limits and obedience to the One worshipped, and you forbade vileness and tyranny—yet they met you with oppression and aggression.

It is narrated from Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) that he said: Muharram is a month in which the people of the Age of Ignorance forbade fighting, yet in it our blood was made lawful, our sanctity was violated, our offspring and our women were taken captive, fires were set ablaze in our tents, what we possessed of our belongings was plundered, and the sanctity of God's Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) was not honored in our regard. Truly, the day of Hussein has wounded our eyelids, made our tears flow, and humiliated our dear one in the land of grief and affliction—a land that has bequeathed us grief and affliction until the Day of Reckoning. So for the like of Hussein let the weepers weep, for weeping over him casts away the grave sins.

Sheikh al-Mufid, may God's mercy be upon him, said in al-Irshad: al-Kalbi and al-Mada'ini and others among the chroniclers narrated, saying: When al-Hasan (peace be upon him) died, the Shia in Iraq stirred, and they wrote to Hussein (peace be upon him) about deposing Mu'awiya and pledging allegiance to him. But he declined them, mentioning that between him and Mu'awiya there was a covenant and a pact he could not break until its term had passed. So when Mu'awiya died, he would consider

the matter.
When Mu'awiya died—and that was in the middle of the month of Rajab in the year sixty of the Hijra—Yazid wrote to al-Walid ibn Utba ibn Abi Sufyan, who was governor over Medina on Mu'awiya's behalf, ordering him to compel Hussein (peace be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him and not to permit him any delay in that. So al-Walid sent for Hussein at night and summoned him. Hussein (peace be upon him) recognized what he intended, so he called a group of his loyal men and ordered them to bear arms, and said to them: al-Walid has summoned me at this hour, and I am not safe from his charging me with some matter to which I will not consent—and he is not to be trusted. So be with me. When I enter upon him, sit at the door, and if you hear my voice raised, enter upon him to ward him off from me.
So Hussein (peace be upon him) went to al-Walid ibn Utba and found Marwan ibn al-Hakam with him. al-Walid announced to him the death of Mu'awiya, and Hussein said "To God we belong and to Him we return," then he read out to him Yazid's letter and what he had ordered concerning taking the pledge of allegiance from him. Hussein (peace be upon him) said: I do not think you would be content with my pledge to Yazid in secret, until I pledge to him openly so that the people may know of it. al-Walid said to him: Indeed. Hussein said: Then wait until morning and consider your view in this matter. al-Walid said to him: Depart in the name of God Most High, until you come to us with the body of the people.
Marwan said to him: By God, if Hussein parts from you now without pledging allegiance, you will never again have the power over such a chance—until the slain multiply between you and him. Hold the man and do not let him leave your presence until he pledges allegiance or you strike off his neck. At that, Hussein (peace be upon him) sprang up and said: You, O son of the blue-eyed woman, would you kill me, or would he? You have lied, by God, and sinned. Then he went out walking, with his loyal men, until he reached his house.
(1)
.
In the narration of Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may God's mercy be upon him, he said: Yazid wrote to al-Walid ordering him to take the pledge of allegiance from its people, and especially from Hussein (peace be upon him), saying: If he refuses you, strike off his neck, and send me his head. So al-Walid summoned Marwan and consulted him about the matter of Hussein (peace be upon him),

and he said: He will not accept, and were I in your place I would strike off his neck. al-Walid said: Would that I were nothing worth mentioning.
Then he sent for Hussein (peace be upon him), and he came with thirty of his household and loyal men—and the account continues until he said—Hussein (peace be upon him) grew angry, then said: Woe upon you, O son of the blue-eyed woman, you order that my neck be struck? You have lied, by God, and sinned.
Then he turned to al-Walid and said: O Commander! We are the household of prophethood, the source of the message, the place the angels frequent. Through us God began, and through us God will conclude. And Yazid is a corrupt man, a drinker of wine, a killer of the soul God has forbidden, one who flaunts his depravity openly—and one like me does not pledge allegiance to one like him. But we shall wait until morning and you shall wait, and we shall see and you shall see, which of us is more worthy of the allegiance and the caliphate. Then he (peace be upon him) went out, and Marwan said to al-Walid: You disobeyed me! He said: Woe to you—you counseled me toward the ruin of my religion and my world. By God, I would not wish to have all that the sun rises and sets upon of the world's wealth and dominion, and to have killed Hussein. Glory be to God! Shall I kill Hussein because he said "I will not pledge allegiance"? By God, I truly believe that a man who is held to account for the blood of Hussein will be of light scale before God on the Day of Resurrection—God will not look upon him nor purify him, and for him is a painful torment.

.
In the narration of Ibn Shahrashub, may God's mercy be upon him: when Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) refused the pledge of allegiance, he said: al-Walid grew harsh in his speech and voices were raised, so nineteen men rushed in, having drawn their daggers, and led Hussein (peace be upon him) out to his house by force.

.
How excellent are the words of the proof, Sheikh Ali al-Jishi, may God's mercy be upon him, when he said:
He came to al-Walid with young men, each of whom found
bitter death sweeter than his humiliation.
He stationed them at the door—but when there rose
the voice of the chief, they fell upon his enemy,
and surrounded him like lions, and ground down
the nose of the foe, so he returned to his authority.
Would that they had been at al-Taff, when he was struck down
before them, and lay upon the sand dunes,
and became alone, the enemy aiming for him
with archers shooting at him and lancers with their spears,
and he cried for help, with none to answer him save
a voice of grief from the weeping of his women,
who would have risen to aid him, each one saying:
"At your service, O caller of our Lord," with his tongue,

Ibn Shahrashub, may God's mercy be upon him, said: Yazid wrote to al-Walid ordering him to take the pledge of allegiance from Hussein (peace be upon him), Abdullah ibn Umar, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr—taking it with severity, allowing no concession. Whoever among them refuses you, strike off his neck and send me his head. So al-Walid consulted Marwan about that, and he said: The wise course is to summon them and take the pledge from them before they learn of it.
So he sent to seek them, and they were at the burial ground. Abd al-Rahman and Abdullah said: We shall enter our houses and bolt our doors. Ibn al-Zubayr said: By God, I shall never pledge allegiance to Yazid. And Hussein (peace be upon him) said: I have no choice but to go in to al-Walid—and he mentioned something close to what has already been related.

Sheikh al-Mufid, may God's mercy be upon him, said: Marwan said to al-Walid: You disobeyed me—no, by God, he will never give you the like of such a chance again. al-Walid said: Woe to anyone but you, O Marwan! You chose for me that which holds the ruin of my religion and my world. By God, I would not love to possess all the wealth and dominion of the world upon which the sun rises and sets, and to have killed Hussein. Glory be to God! Shall I kill Hussein because he said "I will not pledge allegiance"? By God, I truly believe that a man who is held to account for the blood of Hussein will be of light scale before God on the Day of Resurrection.
Marwan said to him: If this is your view, then you did right in what you did—saying this, though not in praise of his judgment.

.
Muhammad ibn Abi Talib al-Musawi, may God Most High have mercy upon him, said: When the letter ordering the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him) reached al-Walid, it weighed heavily upon him, and he said: By God, God shall not see me kill the son of His Prophet, even were Yazid to grant me the world and all that is in it.

The Sayyid, may God's mercy be upon him, said: When morning came, Hussein (peace be upon him) went out of his house to listen for news, and Marwan ibn al-Hakam met him and said: O Abu Abdullah, I am a sincere adviser to you, so obey me and you will be rightly guided. Hussein (peace be upon him) said: And what is that? Speak, that I may hear. Marwan said: I order you to pledge allegiance to Yazid, the Commander of the Faithful, for it is better for you in your religion and your world. Hussein (peace be upon him) said: To God we belong and to Him we return, and upon Islam be farewell, when the nation is afflicted with a shepherd like Yazid. I heard my grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), say: The caliphate is forbidden to the house of Abu Sufyan. And the conversation between him and Marwan grew long until Marwan departed in anger.
When morning came, Hussein (peace be upon him) set out for Mecca, three nights into Sha'ban of the year sixty, and he stayed there the remainder of Sha'ban, and the month of Ramadan, and Shawwal, and Dhul-Qa'da.

Sheikh al-Mufid, may God's mercy be upon him, said: Hussein (peace be upon him) stayed in his house that night, which was the night of Saturday, three nights before the end of Rajab in the year sixty of the Hijra, while al-Walid ibn Utba busied himself with corresponding with Ibn al-Zubayr regarding the pledge of allegiance to Yazid, and his refusal of them. Ibn al-Zubayr left Medina that very night, heading for Mecca. When morning came, al-Walid dispatched men in pursuit, sending a rider with eighty horsemen from the loyalists of the Umayyads to seek him, but they did not overtake him, so they returned.
At the end of the day on Saturday, he sent men to Hussein (peace be upon him) for him to come and pledge allegiance to al-Walid for Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Hussein (peace be upon him) said to them: Wait until morning, then you shall see and we shall see. So they held off from him that night and did not press him. Then he (peace be upon him) went out under cover of night—that being the night of Sunday, two nights before the end of Rajab—heading toward Mecca, accompanied by his sons, his brothers, his nephews, and most of his household, except for Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, may God's mercy be upon him. For when he learned of his resolve to leave Medina, not knowing where he would head, he said to him: O my brother, you are the most beloved of people to me and the dearest of them to me, and I would not withhold my counsel from any of creation save you, for you are the most deserving of it. Withdraw yourself from pledging allegiance to Yazid ibn

Mu'awiya, and from the great cities as much as you are able. Then send your messengers to the people and call them to yourself. If the people follow you and pledge allegiance to you, you praise God for that. And if the people unite upon someone other than you, God will not thereby diminish your religion nor your reason, nor will your manliness and your virtue depart by it. I fear for you that you may enter one of these cities, and the people will differ among themselves—some a faction with you and others against you—and they will fight, so that you become the target of the first spear-points. Then the best of this entire nation in soul, father, and mother would be the one whose blood is most wasted and whose family most humiliated.
Hussein (peace be upon him) said to him: Then where shall I settle, O my brother? He said: Settle in Mecca; if the abode there is peaceful for you, then so be it; and if it turns against you, take to the sands and the mountain peaks, and move from land to land until you see what the affair of the people comes to. For you are most sound in judgment when you face the matter head-on. He (peace be upon him) said: O my brother, you have advised and shown concern, and I hope your view is sound and divinely guided.

From Hamza ibn Humran, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), he said: We mentioned the departure of Hussein (peace be upon him) and the staying behind of Ibn al-Hanafiyya, and Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: O Hamza, I shall tell you a tradition about which you will ask no questions after this gathering of yours. When Hussein (peace be upon him) departed, setting out, he called for a sheet of parchment and wrote in it: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. From Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib to the Banu Hashim. To proceed: whoever among you joins me will attain martyrdom, and whoever stays behind will not attain the triumph. And peace.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus, may God's mercy be upon him, narrated from the book al-Shafi fi al-Nasab, with his chain to his grandfather Muhammad ibn Umar, who said: I heard my father, Umar ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), relate to my maternal uncles, the family of Aqil, saying: When my brother Hussein (peace be upon him) refused the pledge of allegiance to Yazid in Medina, I entered upon him and found him alone, and I said to him: May I be made your ransom, O Abu Abdullah, your brother

Abu Muhammad al-Hasan related to me, from his father (peace be upon them)—then tears overtook me and my sobbing rose. He drew me to himself and said: He told you that I am to be killed? I said: God forbid, O son of the Messenger of God. He said: I ask you by the right of your father, did he inform you of my killing? I said: Yes—so why do you not seek an interpretation and pledge allegiance? He said: My father told me that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) informed him of his own killing and of mine, and that my burial place would be near his burial place. Do you suppose you know what I do not know? Truly, I shall never yield to baseness for myself. And Fatima will surely meet her father complaining of what her offspring met from his nation, and no one who harmed her in her offspring shall enter Paradise.

Ibn Quluwayh, may God's mercy be upon him, narrated from Jabir, from Muhammad ibn Ali (peace be upon them), who said: When Hussein (peace be upon him) resolved to depart from Medina, the women of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib came and gathered to wail, until Hussein (peace be upon him) walked among them and said: I beseech you by God not to display this matter in disobedience to God and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his family). The women of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib said to him: Then for whom shall we keep the wailing and the weeping? For it is to us like the day on which the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) died, and Ali, and Fatima, and Ruqayya, and Zainab, and Umm Kulthum. We beseech you by God—may God make us your ransom from death, O beloved of the righteous among the people of the graves. And one of his aunts turned away weeping, saying: I bear witness, O Hussein, that I heard the jinn wail at your wailing, saying:

And they also said:

In Ma'ali al-Sibtayn by al-Ha'iri, may God's mercy be upon him, he said: Then the women of the Banu Hashim came to Umm Hani, the aunt of Hussein (peace be upon him), and said to her: O Umm Hani, you sit while Hussein (peace be upon him), with his dependents, is resolved upon departure? So Umm Hani came, and when Hussein (peace be upon him) saw her, he said: Is this not my aunt Umm Hani? It was said: Yes. He said: O aunt, what has brought you in this state? She said: And how should I not come, when it has reached me that the protector of the widows is departing from me? Then she broke into weeping, reciting the verses of her father Abu Talib (peace be upon him):
The fair-faced one through whose countenance rain is sought,
sustenance of orphans, protection for widows.
The perishing ones of the family of Hashim circle round him,
and at his side they are in bounty and abundant favors.
Then she said: My master, I am filled with foreboding for you over this journey, for a caller I heard last night, saying:
Truly the slain one of al-Taff, from the family of Hashim,
has humbled necks of Quraysh, and they were humbled.
The beloved of God's Messenger was never given to vileness;
his calamity has laid bare the noses and grown vast.
Hussein (peace be upon him) said to her: O aunt, do not say "of Quraysh," but say: "has humbled the necks of the Muslims, and they were humbled." Then he said: O aunt, all that is decreed shall surely come to pass, beyond all avoidance. And he (peace be upon him) said:
They are no people who can overcome the son of Ghalib,
but by the knowledge of the unseen the matter has been decreed.
So Umm Hani went out from his presence weeping, saying:
Not only Umm Hani—her state was grieved
by Hussein's departure from the city of his grandfather,
but rather the noble grave and the one within it,
and his pulpit, weep on account of his loss.

I say: Would that I knew the state of Umm Hani and the daughters of Abd al-Muttalib on the day the bearer of news arrived with the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him). And Asma'—and in another narration, Umm Luqman bint Aqil ibn Abi Talib—went out among a group of the women of the Banu Hashim, her head uncovered, dragging her garment, until she came to the grave of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). She clung to it and sobbed beside it, then turned to the Emigrants and the Helpers, saying:
What will you say, if the Prophet should say to you:
What have you done, you who are the last of the nations,
with my progeny and my family after my passing?
Some of them captives, and some drenched in blood. (2)
Some of the narrators said: Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) prepared himself and resolved to leave Medina, and in the dead of night he went to his mother's grave, prayed beside it and bade her farewell. Then he rose from her grave and went to the grave of his brother al-Hasan and did likewise. Then he returned to his house.

He bade farewell to the pure ones, the people of the Cloak,
at their graves, when he was resolved to depart.
And at his departure she bade him farewell, and sought
in place of the visitation a place for visiting—

and found him with his noble head severed, his limbs

with which Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them) was elegized was the saying of Uqba ibn Amr al-Sahmi, of the Banu Sahm ibn Awf ibn Ghalib:
When the eye was gladdened in life, while you
lived in fear in this world, its light grew dark.
I passed by the grave of Hussein at Karbala,
and upon it my abundant tears poured down.
I ceased not to mourn him and weep for his sorrow,
while my eye aided me with its tears and its sobbing.
And I wept, after Hussein, for bands of men
whose graves surrounded him on both his sides.
Peace be upon the people of the graves at Karbala—
and little it is from me, a peace that visits them.
A peace, in the evenings and in the forenoon,
borne by the gusting winds and their stirrings.
May the visitors never cease, the pilgrims to his grave,
upon whom its musk and its perfume waft. (1)

It is recounted in the visitations of the Imams of the Household (peace be upon them): O my masters, were the Chosen One to behold you, with the arrows of the tyrants sunk deep in your livers, their lances aimed at your throats, their swords drenched in your blood, the sons of harlots slaking the thirst of their depravity upon your piety, and the rage of disbelief upon your faith,

O for the heads upon the lances, and the ribs

It is narrated from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) in a tradition of his concerning the trials and afflictions that would befall his household (peace be upon them)—when he was asked about the cause of his weeping when he saw Hussein (peace be upon him), he said: When I saw him, I remembered what would be done to him after me. It is as though I see him having sought refuge in my sanctuary and at my grave, yet finding no refuge granted. So I draw him in my sleep to my breast, and command him to depart from the abode of my migration, and give him glad tidings of martyrdom. So he departs from it to the land of his slaying, the site of his fall—the land of grief and affliction, of killing and annihilation. A band of the Muslims will aid him; those are among the foremost of the martyrs of my nation on the Day of Resurrection.

the sanctuary of God, and your dispatching of men against him to assassinate him. So you drove him out from the sanctuary of God to Kufa, and he left it fearful and watchful. He had been the most honored of the people of al-Batha in al-Batha of old, and the most honored of its people in it of late, and the most obeyed of the people of the two Sanctuaries in the two Sanctuaries, had he taken up a stand there and made fighting lawful there. But he disliked to be the one who would violate the sanctity of the House and the sanctity of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and so he held that greater than you held it, when you dispatched men against him there to fight within the sanctuary. He held it greater than Ibn al-Zubayr held it, when the latter committed sacrilege at the Sacred House, exposing it to the marauder and the wandering. And you? You, I think, are the one who makes the sacred lawful—nay, there is no doubt that you are the deviant, the well-known. For you are the offspring of women, a man of frivolous amusements. So when he saw the evil of your view, he departed to Iraq, and did not seek to fight you. And the command of God was a decree ordained.

The narrator said: Hussein (peace be upon him) went out from his house one night and came to the grave of his grandfather (peace be upon him and his family) and said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God. I am Hussein, the son of Fatima, your fledgling and the son of your fledgling, your grandson whom you left behind among your nation. So bear witness against them, O Prophet of God, that they have abandoned me, and neglected me, and failed to protect me. And this is my complaint to you until I meet you. Then he rose and set his feet together and remained bowing and prostrating.
He said: al-Walid sent to the house of Hussein (peace be upon him) to see whether he had left Medina or not, and did not find him in his house, and said: Praise be to God who made him leave and did not afflict me with his blood. He said: Hussein (peace be upon him) returned to his house near dawn. When the second night came, he went out to the grave again and prayed several units of prayer. When he finished his prayer, he began to say: O God, this is the grave of Your Prophet Muhammad, and I am the son of the daughter of Your Prophet, and there has befallen me of the matter what You know. O God, I love what is right and condemn what is wrong, and I ask You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, by the right of the grave and the one within it, that You choose for me what is pleasing to You and pleasing to Your Messenger.

He said: Then he began to weep beside the grave until, when it was near dawn, he laid his head upon the grave and dozed off. And behold, there was the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), coming amid a host of angels at his right and his left and before him, until he drew Hussein to his breast and kissed him between the eyes and said: My beloved, O Hussein, it is as though I see you soon, weltering in your blood, slaughtered in the land of grief and affliction, amid a band of my nation—and you, with that, thirsty, given no drink, parched, never quenched—while they, with that, hope for my intercession. May God grant them no portion of my intercession on the Day of Resurrection. My beloved, O Hussein, your father and your mother and your brother have come to me, and they long for you, and there are for you in the gardens degrees you will not attain except through martyrdom.
He said: So Hussein (peace be upon him) in his sleep began to look at his grandfather and say: O grandfather, I have no need to return to the world. Take me to you and admit me with you into your grave. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: You must return to the world until you are granted martyrdom, and what God has decreed for you in it of the great reward. For you and your father and your brother and your uncle and the uncle of your father will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in a single company, until you enter Paradise.
How excellent are the words of the late Sheikh Abd al-Mun'im al-Furtusi, may God's mercy be upon him, when he said:
I would ransom Hussein when, departing in haste,
he bade farewell to a grave wherein the weight of prophethood was laid.
He came to bid it farewell, while his heart
with the blades of parting was nearly torn apart.
He poured out to it the sighs of his sorrows,
in his complaint, while his eyes scattered the tears:
O grandfather, enough for me is what I endure of suffering
in this world that robs me of sleep.
And he answered him: Be patient, my son, against the harm,
until you attain by this the highest station.
God has bestowed upon you a matter that could not be
attained save by martyrdom—its path made smooth for you.
It is as though I see you, O my son, at Karbala,
become slaughtered by the swords, cut to pieces.
And he was seen, in the presence of Zainab,
he and the Legatee and his mother al-Zahra together,

at a place of slaughter where his blood was shed.
I ransom with my own soul that place of his slaying. (1)

The narrator said: So Hussein (peace be upon him) awoke from his sleep, alarmed and terrified, and recounted his vision to his household and the Banu Abd al-Muttalib. On that day, there was no people in the east or the west more intense in grief than the household of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), nor more in weeping—men and women—than they.
He said: Hussein (peace be upon him) prepared to leave Medina, and in the dead of night he went to his mother's grave and bade her farewell. Then he went to the grave of his brother al-Hasan and did likewise. Then he returned to his house at the time of dawn, and his brother Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya came to him and said: O my brother, you are the most beloved of creation to me, and the dearest of them to me, and by God I would not withhold my counsel from any of creation—and no one is more deserving of it than you, for you are the mingling of my water and my soul and my spirit and my sight, and the eldest of my household, and one whose obedience is binding upon my neck, because God has honored you above me and made you among the masters of the people of Paradise. And the account continues until he said: Go out to Mecca; if the abode there is peaceful for you, then that is well; and if it is otherwise, go out to the lands of Yemen, for they are the supporters of your grandfather and your father, and they are the most compassionate of people and the gentlest of them in heart, and the broadest of people in lands. If the abode is peaceful for you, then so; and if not, take to the sands and the mountain heights, and pass from land to land until you see what the affair of the people comes to, and God judges between us and the corrupt people.
He said: Hussein (peace be upon him) said: O my brother, by God, even were there no refuge nor shelter, I would not pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Then Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya broke off his words and wept, and Hussein (peace be upon him) wept with him for a while, then said: O my brother, may God reward you well, for you have advised and pointed to what is right. I am resolved upon departure to Mecca, and I have prepared for that—I and my brothers and my nephews and my followers—and their command is my command and their view is my view. As for you, my brother, there is no harm in your staying in Medina, that you may be
