The ʿĀshūrāʾ gatherings in the Ḥusaynī mourning assemblies

May his feet stand firm upon the bridge of Sirat on the day when feet shall slip.
How excellent are the words of Sheikh Abdul-Husayn Shukr, may mercy be upon him, when he says in lamenting Imam Hassan (peace be upon him):
Who will convey to the Chosen One and to the pure Fatima
that Hussein weeps tears of blood over Hassan?
He calls to him: O my support in every calamity,
my helper when time strikes me with weakness.
You were to me, of the sons of glory, their last remnant,
and against the enemy my spear that did not soften through you.
But today, after you, it has grown soft
for anyone who pokes at it, and life's ease is no longer sweet.
My grief for Zainab, who calls to him while her eye
weeps and her tears pour like clouds streaming with rain.(1)
The completion of the hadith: He (peace be upon him and his family) said: As for Hussein, he is of me, and he is my son and my child, and the best of creation after his brother. He is the Imam of the Muslims, the master of the believers, the vicegerent of the Lord of the worlds, the refuge of those who seek help, the shelter of those who seek protection, and the proof of God over all His creation. He is the master of the youth of Paradise, and the gate of salvation for the nation. His command is my command, and obedience to him is obedience to me. Whoever follows him is of me, and whoever disobeys him is not of me. Indeed, when I saw him I remembered what would be done to him after me. It is as if I see him having sought refuge at my sanctuary and my grave, yet finding no protection. So I draw him to my breast in his sleep, and command him to depart from the land of my migration, and give him glad tidings of martyrdom. So he departs from it to the land of his slaying and the place of his fall — a land of grief and affliction, of killing and destruction. A band of Muslims supports him; they are among the chiefs of the martyrs of my nation on the Day of Resurrection. It is as if I behold him struck by an arrow, falling slain from his horse, then slaughtered as a ram is slaughtered, wronged.
Then the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) wept, and those around him wept, and their voices rose in clamor. Then he (peace be upon him and his family) stood, saying: O God, I complain to You of what my household will face after me. Then he entered his house.

How excellent are the words of the scholar Sheikh Hasan Ali al-Badr, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
Have you not seen how the people of God were heaped
with the calamities of fate, in what dreadful heaping?
Did not the daughter of the Prophet choke on her own saliva,
as the enemies made her swallow the taste of bitter colocynth?
Was not al-Karrar slain in transgression by the sword of one
who rebelled and tyrannized in the sins he committed —
the enemy of the God of the worlds, the son of Muljam,
the most wretched of all people since the days of Adam?
Did not the pure one's son return, forced
into a peace with war though he was no peacemaker?
Did they not storm his tent and plunder
his baggage there, as raiders plunder spoils?
Did the enemies not treacherously slip him poison,
so he cast into the basin the heart of all noble virtues?
Did they not shoot him with arrows while he was a corpse
upon the bier — nay, above the heads of the stars?
And if I forget, I shall never forget Hussein when he became,
in spite of the religion's nose, plunder for the swords.
He perished after the vastness of space grew narrow for him,
so the expanse of the worlds grew narrow with grief for him.
He perished, his heart burning with thirst,
amid sorrows in which every Hashimite perished.
Why then does Nizar not rise to avenge them,
and suckle war from the udders of sharp blades,
and fill it with horses racing in their advance
against the family of Harb beneath fierce lions,
so those hooves trample their heads
as they trampled the breast of the master of Hashim?(1)

Al-Rawandi, may mercy be upon him, narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was one day sitting with Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussein (peace be upon them) around him. He said to them: How will it be with you when you are slain and your graves are scattered apart? Hassan (peace be upon him) said: Will we die a natural death or be killed? He said: O my son, rather you will be killed by poison, wronged; your brother will be killed by thirst; your father will be killed unjustly; and your descendants will be driven and scattered across the earth.
Hussein (peace be upon him) said: And who will kill us? He said: The most wicked of people. He said: Will anyone visit us? He said: Yes, a group of my nation who seek by visiting you my favor and my bond. So when the Day of Resurrection comes,

It is related in the commentary of Imam al-Askari (peace be upon him) that he said regarding the words of the Almighty: "And when We took your covenant — up to His words — so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be helped"(2). The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) — when this verse was revealed concerning the Jews, those Jews who broke the covenant of God, denied the messengers of God, and killed the friends of God — said: Shall I not inform you of who among the Jews of this nation resembles them? They said: Yes, O Messenger of God. He said: A people of my nation who claim to be of my religion, who kill the most virtuous of my descendants and the purest of my lineage, who alter my law and my Sunnah, and who kill my two sons Hassan and Hussein as the predecessors of these Jews killed Zakariyya and Yahya. Indeed, God curses them as He cursed them, and He will send against the remnant of their descendants, before the Day of Resurrection, a guide rightly guided from the descendants of the wronged Hussein, who will drive them with the swords of his friends into the fire of Hell.(3)
How excellent are the words of al-Sayyid al-Radi, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
O Messenger of God, had you witnessed them,
they were caught between slaughter and captivity,
your eyes would have beheld of them a sight
that brings grief to the heart and a mote to the eye.

The scholar al-Majlisi, may mercy be upon him, said: I found in the handwriting of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jab'i, copied from the handwriting of al-Shahid — may God raise his rank — copied from the Misbah of Sheikh Abu Mansur — may his resting place be blessed — who said: It is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) entered upon Fatima (peace be upon her) one day, and she prepared for him food of dates, bread, and ghee. So they gathered to eat — he, Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussein (peace be upon them). When they had eaten, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) prostrated and prolonged his prostration. Then he wept, then he laughed, then he sat up. The boldest of them in speech was Ali (peace be upon him), who said: O Messenger of God, we have seen

from you today what we have never seen before. What is it?
He (peace be upon him and his family) said: When I ate with you, I was glad and happy at your safety and your being gathered together, so I prostrated to God Almighty in thanks. Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said: You prostrated in thanks for your joy in your family? I said: Yes. He said: Shall I not tell you what will befall them after you? I said: Yes, O my brother Gabriel. He said: As for your daughter, she will be the first of your family to join you after she is wronged, her right taken, her inheritance denied, her husband wronged, and her rib broken.
As for your cousin, he will be wronged, denied his right, and killed. As for Hassan, he will be wronged, denied his right, and killed by poison. As for Hussein, he will be wronged, denied his right, his kin will be killed, the horses will trample him, his baggage will be plundered, his women and children taken captive, and he will be buried rolled in his blood, buried by strangers. So I wept and said: Will anyone visit him? He said: Strangers will visit him. I said: What reward is there for one who visits him? He said: There shall be recorded for him the reward of a thousand pilgrimages and a thousand minor pilgrimages, all of them with you. So I laughed.

Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated concerning the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) that when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) fell unconscious, Hassan and Hussein (peace be upon them) came crying and weeping until they fell upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). Ali (peace be upon him) wanted to draw them away from him, but the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) regained consciousness and said: O Ali, let me smell them and let them smell me, and let me take provision from them and let them take provision from me. Indeed, they will be wronged after me and killed unjustly. So the curse of God be upon whoever wrongs them. He said this three times.

And in the narration of al-Irbili: from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, who said: Fatima (peace be upon her) entered upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) while he was in the throes of death. She bent over him weeping. He opened his eyes and regained consciousness, then said: O my little daughter, you are the wronged one after me, and you are the oppressed one after me. Whoever harms you has harmed me, whoever angers you has angered me, whoever pleases you has pleased me, whoever is kind to you has been kind to me,

whoever shuns you has shunned me, whoever maintains ties with you has maintained ties with me, whoever cuts off ties with you has cut off ties with me, whoever does you justice has done me justice, and whoever wrongs you has wronged me — for you are of me and I am of you. You are a part of me and the spirit that is within my sides. Then he (peace be upon him and his family) said: To God I complain of those of my nation who wrong you. How excellent are the words of Sheikh al-Azri, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
She is the handhold by which none is saved
save one who clings tightly to the rope of her devotion.
God saw no reward for the message
save the safeguarding of al-Zahra in her kinship.
She passed away, the greatest of people in sorrow,
a lump of her anguish in the mouth of time.
For what reason was she buried in secret —
the part of the Chosen One — and her grave concealed?
She was laid where people see no resting place for her;
what sanctity does her resting place enshrine!(1)
Then Hassan and Hussein (peace be upon them) entered and bent over the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), weeping and saying: May our souls be a ransom for your soul, O Messenger of God. Ali (peace be upon him) went to draw them away from him, but he raised his head toward him and said: Let them be, O my brother, let them smell me and let me smell them, and let them take provision from me and let me take provision from them, for they will both be killed after me, wronged and treated with enmity. So the curse of God be upon whoever kills them. Then he said: O Ali, you are the wronged one after me, and I will be the adversary on the Day of Resurrection of whoever is your adversary.

How excellent are the words of one of the poets of Hussein (peace be upon him) who said:
Calamities surged upon his family — not one of them found ease
from the oppression of his enemies until he died subdued.
His brother passed away with head stained in blood, his daughter
filled with wrath, and his two grandsons — one poisoned, one slaughtered.(3)
How excellent are the words of the poet of the Household (peace be upon them), Ibn Hammad (may God have mercy upon him), the Almighty, when he says:
I have never ceased to weep blood, pouring down in streams,
for the two masters, the two slain, the two martyrs,

The two noble masters who were
the best of mankind — two fathers of glory and two grandsons.
The two who humbled themselves to God, returning to Him,
hastening to the truth, the two intercessors.
Two lights they were of old in the shades, as
the Prophet said — two earrings to the Throne of God,
the two apples of Ahmad the Guide, made
offspring for Fatima and the pure Ali.
May God send blessings upon their souls and water
their graves forever with the rain of the two stars.(1)

It is narrated that when the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was struck by Ibn Muljam — God curse him — with the sword upon his noble head, and he (peace be upon him) collapsed in his prayer niche, a dark black wind blew, and the angels mourned him in the heavens. Hassan, Hussein, Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, and the rest of his sons came and found his head split, paleness having overcome him from the flowing of blood and the severity of the poison. The people around him were wailing, lamenting, and weeping in a manner that scorched the hearts. Hassan took his head and placed it in his lap. He regained consciousness and said: This is what God and His Messenger promised, and there is no power and no strength save in God, the Most High, the Most Great. Then he looked at his sons and saw that their souls were nearly leaving them from wailing and weeping. His tears flowed down his cheeks, mingled with his blood. He (peace be upon him) said: Do you weep over me? Weep much and laugh little. As for you, O Abu Muhammad, you will be killed by poison, wronged and persecuted. And as for you, O Abu Abdullah, you are the martyr of this nation, and you will be slaughtered like a sheep from the back of your neck, your limbs crushed under the hooves of horses, your head paraded among the slaves of the Umayyads, and the womenfolk of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) taken captive. And indeed I, and they, have a standing-place on the Day of Resurrection.

It is also narrated that the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to Hassan and Hussein (peace be upon them) on the night of his death, after entrusting them with his noble counsel: O Abu Muhammad and O Abu Abdullah, it is as if I see the trials breaking out upon you from here and from there. So be patient until God judges, for He is the best of

The scholar Sheikh Ali al-Marhoon says, in seeking the rising of the Imam al-Hujja — may God hasten his noble relief:
When will you rise — may my soul be your ransom?
Every heart aches for what has come to pass.
Your grandfather, the Chosen One, passed away by poison;
your pure mother, her cheek was struck.
Your father, the executor, became slain,
and the heart of his son was seized by poisons.
In the land of al-Tuff, Hussein became
stained with dust, his heart full of wounds.
Around him his companions and his noble sons,
sacrificed — children and a nursing infant.
Upon the camels, women uncovered,
and an ailing one, sick from what afflicted him.(2)

The Second Assembly, of the First Day
Fatima's Standing in the Gathering Place with the Shirt of Hussein (peace be upon him)
Know, O believers — may God grant you good consolation in the affliction of the master of the youth of Paradise — that sharing the grief of al-Zahra, the chaste virgin (peace be upon her), over her slain son, the delight of her eye, the grandson of the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family), is a right she holds over us, demanded by the obligation of loyalty and love that God commanded in the clear text of His Book, when He, the Almighty, says: "Say: I ask of you no reward for it except love for kinship." But this nation did not honor the sanctity of the Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) in his pure progeny. So by the killing of Hussein (peace be upon him), the religion was afflicted, and

in him the testament of the master of the messengers was lost. Truly we belong to God, and to Him we shall return, and there is no power and no strength save in God, the Most High, the Most Great.
It is narrated from the master of the worshippers, Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them), that he said: There has been no day like the day of Hussein (peace be upon him). What ails the earth, that its regions have quaked,
and the sun has been eclipsed within its lights?
The clamor has risen from all the worlds,
and likewise the assemblies' veils have been blackened.
They have been turned, after joy, into mourning-houses,
and the people, in grief, have inflamed their eyes.
Has a destroying calamity befallen the creation,
so that its stability has been removed by ruin?
They said: Do you not behold the crescent of Muharram?
It has appeared, and eyes have poured for it.
So don the garments of grief and sit for mourning,
for grief for the pure ones is its emblem within it,
reflecting on what came to pass therein upon
the family of the Messenger, and what the wicked committed.
The brutes of Umayya thought, in their ignorance,
that the free among them would be obeyed as slaves.
They failed, and their sinful hope failed; indeed
they faltered, and their shame became plain to all creation.

Al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Aban ibn Uthman, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, God will gather the first and the last on one ground, and a caller will cry out: Lower your eyes and bow your heads until Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), crosses the bridge of Sirat. He said: So the creation will lower their eyes, and Fatima (peace be upon her) will come upon one of the noble mounts of Paradise, escorted by seventy thousand angels. She will stand at a noble standing-place among the standing-places of the Resurrection. Then she will dismount from her mount and take in her hand the shirt of Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), soaked in his blood, and say: O Lord, this is the shirt of my son, and You know what was done to him. Then the call will come to her from God Almighty: O Fatima, you have with Me My satisfaction. She will say: O Lord, take vengeance for me upon his killer. So God Almighty will command a column of fire to emerge from Hell, and it will pick up the killers of Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) as a bird picks up grains. Then the column will return them to the Fire, and they will be punished therein with various torments. Then Fatima (peace be upon her) will ride her mount until she enters Paradise, with the angels escorting her, her descendants before her, and their followers among the people to her right and left.

It is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, God will erect a canopy of light before the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and all the creation will be present. Then a caller will cry out: O assembly of people, lower your eyes, for Fatima al-Zahra, the daughter of Muhammad the Chosen, wishes to pass through the canopy. It is narrated from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) that he said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, Fatima will come forward upon a she-camel of the camels of Paradise, holding in her hand the shirt of Hussein, soaked in his blood. She will cry out and throw herself down from the camel, falling prostrate to God Almighty, and saying: O my God, my Master, and my Lord, judge between me and whoever killed my son Hussein. Then the call will come to her from God Almighty: O My beloved and daughter of My beloved, raise your head. By My might and My majesty, this day I shall take vengeance upon whoever wronged you and wronged your son. Then He will command that all who were present at the killing of Hussein and all who took part in killing him be sent to the Fire.

It is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) that he said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, Fatima (peace be upon her) will come amid a company of her women, and it will be said to her: Enter Paradise. She will say: I will not enter until I know what was done to my son Hussein. It will be said to her: Look to your right. She will turn, and there will be Hussein standing without a head. She will cry out a cry, and the women will cry out at her cry, and the angels too. Then she will call out: Oh, my son! Oh, fruit of my heart! At that moment God will become angry and command a fire that has been kindled for a thousand years until it has blackened — no breeze enters it, and no one ever leaves it. It will be said to her: Pick up those who were present at the killing of Hussein. So she will pick them up, and when they are in its belly, it will neigh at them and they will neigh at it, and it will shriek at them and they will shriek at it, and it will roar at them and they will roar at it. Then they will speak with sharp, articulate tongues: O our Lord, why have You made the Fire obligatory for us before the idol-worshippers? The answer will come to them from God: that the one who knew is not like the one who did not know.

It is narrated from the People of the Household (peace be upon them), from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), that he said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her) will come upon a she-camel of the camels of Paradise — its bridle of moist pearls, its legs of green emerald, its tail of pungent musk, its eyes of red ruby — and upon her a dome of light whose inside is seen from its outside; within it is God's pardon, and outside it is God's mercy. Upon her head will be a crown of light with seventy corners, each corner studded with pearls and rubies, shining as a star shines on the horizon of the sky. To her right will be seventy thousand angels, and to her left the like of them, and Gabriel holding the bridle of the camel, calling out at the top of his voice: Lower your eyes until Fatima passes. So they will lower their eyes until she passes the Throne of her Lord and throws herself down from her camel, saying: O my God, my Master, and my Lord, judge between me and whoever wronged me and killed my son. Then the call will come from God Almighty: O My beloved and daughter of My beloved, ask and you shall be given, intercede and your intercession shall be granted. By My might and My majesty, no wrongdoer's wrong shall pass Me by. She will say: O my God, my Master, and my Lord — my descendants, my followers, and the followers of my descendants. Then the call will come from God Almighty: Where are the descendants of Fatima, her followers, the followers of her descendants, her lovers, and the lovers of her descendants?
They will say — while the angels of the Most Merciful surround them — Here we are, O our Lord. Then Fatima will lead them until she brings them into Paradise, while she is holding the shirt of Hussein, soaked in blood, clinging to the pillars of the Throne and saying: O Lord, judge between me and the killer of my son Hussein. So she will be granted her right, as the poet said:
Woe to one whose intercessors are his adversaries,
while the trumpet is blown for the resurrection of creation!
Fatima must come forth on the Day of Resurrection
with her shirt stained by the blood of Hussein.
She will say: My Lord, to You I complain
of the killing of my son Hussein, and here I cry out!
And God will command them all into His Fire —
woe to those who killed Hussein, recorded for all time.(1)

Sibt ibn al-Jawzi was asked, on the day of Ashura during the reign of King al-Nasir, lord of Aleppo, to recount for the people something of the slaying of Hussein (peace be upon him). He ascended the pulpit and sat for a long time without speaking. Then he placed the handkerchief over his face and wept intensely. Then he began to recite while weeping:
Woe to one whose intercessors are his adversaries,
while the trumpet is blown for the raising of creation!
Fatima must come forth on the Day of Resurrection
with her shirt stained by the blood of Hussein.
Then he descended from the pulpit weeping, and ascended to al-Salihiyya in the same state.

So woe to Yazid from the torment of Hell
when Fatima the pure comes forward at the gathering,
her garments a robe of black poison,
and another, deep red, crimson with the grandson's blood.
She calls out while the eyes of mankind are fixed in dread,
and in every heart there is terror at her majesty.
She complains to God the Most High, her voice —
Ali, and our master Ali, is her support.
The tyrant Yazid cannot speak of what he committed —
and how could he have an excuse when treachery is his nature?
So retribution will be exacted from him, and he will be denied
bliss, and a palace in Hell will be set aside for him.
The singer will sing for him and the song will delight him,
and pure wine will be poured into the cup for him —
but that "song" (al-ghina), at the resurrection, transformed, is "torment" (al-'ana),
and that "wine" (al-khamr), transformed, in his heart is "embers" (al-jamr).
Does he strike, in his ignorance, the lips of the grandson of Muhammad,
when the owner of those lips was the one by whom the frontiers are guarded?(2)

So my grief for them — no noble one of them died
a natural death, but only by poison and by sword.
The family of Harb transgressed against them in crime,
and assailed them, clothed in iniquities.
How many noble ones they slaughtered at al-Tuff,
in thirst, with their blades, slaughtering them like grazing cattle.(2)
Sheikh al-Saduq, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Imam al-Rida, from his forefathers, from Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them), who said: Asma bint Umays al-Khath'amiyya related to me, saying: I served as midwife to your grandmother Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), at the birth of Hassan and Hussein. She said: When she gave birth to Hassan, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) came and said: O Asma, bring me my son. She said: So I handed him to him in a yellow cloth, but he cast it aside and said: Did I not charge you not to wrap the newborn in a yellow cloth? And he called for a white cloth and wrapped him in it. Then he made the call to prayer (adhan) in his right ear and the iqama in his left ear, and said to Ali (peace be upon him): What have you named this son of mine? He said: I would not precede you in naming him, O Messenger of God. He said: And I would not precede my Lord, the Almighty. He said: So Gabriel descended and said: God conveys His peace to you and says to you: O Muhammad, Ali is to you in the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after you. So name your son with the name of the son of

Aaron. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: And what is the name of the son of Aaron? Gabriel said: Shubbar. He said: And what is Shubbar? He said: al-Hasan. Asma said: So he named him al-Hasan.
Asma said: When Fatima gave birth to Hussein (peace be upon him), I served as midwife to her at his birth. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) came to me and said: Bring me my son, O Asma. So I handed him to him in a white cloth, and he did with him as he had done with Hassan. She said: And the Messenger of God wept, then said: Indeed, there will be a tale concerning you! O God, curse his killer — do not let Fatima know of this.
Asma said: When it was the seventh day, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) came to me and said: Bring me my son. So I brought him to him, and he did with him as he had done with Hassan, and he sacrificed for him as he had sacrificed for Hassan — a pied ram — and gave the midwife a haunch and a leg, and shaved his head, and gave in charity the weight of the hair in silver, and anointed his head with khaluq perfume, and said: Blood is among the practices of the Age of Ignorance. She said: Then he placed him in his lap and said: O Abu Abdullah, it is grievous to me. Then he wept.
I said: May my father and mother be your ransom — you did this on this day and on the first day, so what is it? He said: I weep over this son of mine, who will be killed by a transgressing, disbelieving faction from the Umayyads — God curse them — may God not grant them my intercession on the Day of Resurrection. He will be killed by a man who breaches the religion and disbelieves in God the Almighty. Then he said: O God, I ask of You concerning these two what Abraham asked of You concerning his descendants. O God, love them and love whoever loves them, and curse whoever hates them, with a curse filling the heaven and the earth.

How excellent are the words of the great scholar Sheikh Muhammad Jawad al-Balaghi, may mercy be upon him, when he says:
The heart of the Chosen One was gladdened with joy by the grandson,
had not the one announcing the news of al-Tuff alarmed him.
He saw him the best of children, by whom refuge is sought,
and the best of martyrs in the faith, defending it.
Though Fatima rejoiced on the day of his birth,
on the night of al-Tuff she became one who weeps for him.
Or though her heart revived from the light of his countenance,
the flow of crimson tears was given in turn over him.

For her heart's joy in him did not endure long
until the torment of grief contended within it.
O sun at the zenith of glory, I never imagined that soon
you would become with body dusty, lying slain,
with a body upon the breast of the Prophet that grew —
the sharp blades of his enemies divided it among themselves;
and O for a head that the majesty of God had crowned,
which the bearer raised high upon the swaying spear;
and a holy breast that held the secrets of its Creator,
which for the filthy Shimr became a thing to mount upon;
and a throat that was the Guide's place to kiss,
which Shimr came to kiss with his blade.
O you who rose avenging for guidance and the faith,
Umayya came to take its vengeance upon you —
how, when your forefather is the cupbearer at the Pool, Haydar?
You passed away while you, with anguished heart, were parched.(1)

Ibn Qulawayh, may mercy be upon him, narrated from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), who said: When Hussein (peace be upon him) entered, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) would draw him to himself, then say to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): Hold him. Then he would bend over him, kiss him, and weep. So he would say: O father, why do you weep? He would say: O my son, I kiss the place of the swords on you and weep. He said: O father, will I be killed? He said: Yes, by God, and your father and your brother and you. He said: O father, will our resting places be scattered apart? He said: Yes, O my son. He said: Who among your nation will visit us? He said: None will visit me and visit your father and your brother and you except the truthful ones of my nation.

Ibn Nama, may mercy be upon him, narrated in Mathir al-Ahzan, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the illness from which he died grew severe upon the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), he drew Hussein (peace be upon him) to his breast, his sweat flowing upon him as he gave up his soul, and he was saying: What is between me and Yazid — may God not bless him! O God, curse Yazid. Then he fainted for a long while and revived, and began to kiss Hussein while his eyes overflowed, saying: Indeed, I and your killer have a standing-place before God Almighty.
